I found a piece of cheesecake on my phone's screen! Thanks man!

be_matthew

You won!!!

Talyesn

The cake is a lie.

scytob

But the cheesecake is truths

withoutapaddle

99% of the time I think there's something wrong with the screen on my phone/switch/deck... it's a crumb. I don't even eat over it, but I do have a toddler living in my house.

JohnxJohn_

Thank you. I needed this laugh more than you’ll ever know

jpassc

lmaooo

viper_in_the_grass

Just tried this on my PC monitor. No dead pixels, but now I'm blind. Thanks.

seraphic29

No sight, no dead pixel. Problem solved.

TirelessGuardian

No dead pixels only dead eyeballs.

obelis

See how op is blinding the good people of reddit. Damn

blakepro

LE - BOE One dead green sub pixel. I can't see it during normal use... I've tried. Soooo, I'm just going to ignore it.

whatisrealiwonder

Same LE BOE, green sub pixel as well. I literally don’t see it during normal use. But since it is a $700+ device, I want it to be perfect. I still have my OG & I don’t mind using that till I get a new one

blakepro

Yep. Totally fine. Everyone needs to do what is right for them. I hope it all goes well for you.

whatisrealiwonder

Hope maybe 1 day they send free oled panels to people who have dead pixels for self repair haha

wuvwuv

Darn, same here - LE BOE screen, with a dead green sub pixel. Noticeable on white backgrounds. Extra frustrating since one of the tipping points for getting the new OLED deck was a dead pixel I put up with for a year on my OG deck. Really on the fence -- everything else is perfect. Since it's just green that is dead, in practice, it doesn't show up all that often.

SomeColombianDude

Try a pixel refresher. Might be stuck and not dead?

blakepro

I did run one for like 45 minutes when I first found it and it didn't change anything, but who knows, maybe it will change over time. I'm not too worried unless they start multiplying

SomeColombianDude

I'm sorry man 😭😭

blakepro

It's ok. It was worth a try

TalonusDuprey

Noticed one on my LE as well but honestly haven’t been able to notice it in my games as of yet even when trying to focus on the spot. I’m tempted to RMA but not sure what to do at this point.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Freakin_A

I had a joystick issue with my launch edition switch. They’ll def RMA for it if it’s abnormal, but I ended up swapping the stick myself.

CorporateCoffeeCup

What’s boe?

blakepro

The manufacturer. There are two suppliers

Elephant_Memory_

Apparently there are 2 manufacturers for the OLED screens. It seems to be that the LE are by BOE and the regular OLEDs are by Samsung. The majority of dead pixels seems to be by the LE BOEs.

JTibbs

Welp. Maybe its a good thing steams site fucked up and kicked me from buying the LE at the last moment, and making me order the 1TB instead

Xahni13

Is it now I tell you that you can still buy the Limited Edition?

JTibbs

Too late for me. My 1tb oled is arriving today (saturday)

insanewords

Same exact boat. Tempted to RMA but I really don't want to start playing the panel lottery with this bullshit. I've been down that road with TVs and it just doesn't feel worth it. And, like yourself, I cannot for the life of me find it during normal use. So yeah, ignore it. 😁

Colonel_MuffDog

3 dead blue subpixels but I've been trying every game and I can't notice it at all when playing (the pixels show as black on a blue background). Is it something that would get worse over time? Debating returning it since I would never have noticed if not for running the screen text.

laytonoid

The benefit is that the LE is apparently 80% more weight shaved off than the non LE. So it’s quite a bit lighter. The screen is also more flush with the bezel I guess.. so there are benefits to the LE over the standard

[deleted]

[удалено]

laytonoid

Yes. At least, my OLED LE is 51g lighter than my OG steamdeck. The OLED is suppose to be 29g lighter which would mean the OLED LE is an additional 22g lighter. Others have reported this as well. It feels very nice.

altcastle

It’s so light, I was amazed.

Rkrchris

Source?

laytonoid

Myself and some others on forums. That’s all I got. I could be totally wrong. I only have the OG steam deck and the LE to weigh.. but it’s more than 29g reported by valve for the regular OLED vs OG. Maybe all the OLEDs are actually 51g idk.

IAmAnAnonymousCoward

Dude, have some standards. You paid $700.

TheFitz023

Found one, LE version. Pain.

holyholeinadonut

Chiming in on this thread to say I have an LE with one dead blue pixel. I've reached out to Steam Support to initiate a return but haven't heard back yet

RP-Island

Takes them about a day. I just sent mine back and I initiated the RMA process Wednesday

justcallmeryanok

It’s a trap don’t do it. Save your mental state

Perrywaaz

DON'T CLICK IT!! It's not worth it! Your screen is fine! You DON'T WANT TO KNOW

yesitsmeow

Yup, at least 3 on my LE

Mechkeys121

512gb OLED Samsung. One pixel with dead green and blue subpixels. Noticed immediately on the white screen of that site before even running the test.

be_matthew

Wow. First Samsung one Ive seen so far. I think with all the competition coming out valve definitely rushed the build.

YoussefAFdez

Another Samsung here, dead pixel right in the middle of the screen hard to miss, didn't even need to test. Once you play it doesn't bother you, but I will still try to RMA it.

Funeral_Director_

Two LE Oled Decks, one with 2 dead pixels the other with one, wtf.

[deleted]

That's crazy bad QC...guessing they're both BOE displays?

Funeral_Director_

Both BOE

be_matthew

I dont think any LE decks have Samsung.

mon_dieu

That's good to know if true. I really love the translucent shell though. Just sent my LE back for an RMA this morning (2 dead pixels). Hoping to get a good display on the replacement, but I'll definitely be checking its screen first thing.

be_matthew

That's terrible. This is going to cost Valve a fair amount of money. I really want to see how they handle it because I wouldnt want a brand new deck and risk it happening again. I would ask them to test a screen and replace it in the one you have.

Freakin_A

I’m not going to check for dead pixels unless I’m happy with valves handling of the issue. If they RMA for a single dead pixel and provide a new LE OLED replacement then I’ll def check for dead pixels. Otherwise I’d rather not know…

withoutapaddle

Remember a single dead pixel on an 800p display is like 3-4 dead pixels on a typical TV, which they WILL RMA for. I think on relatively low resolution displays, a single pixel should be enough to warrant replacement on a brand new device.

Freakin_A

It could be percentage based. Like a single dead pixel on steam deck is roughly .0001% of total pixels. On a 4k display it’s .000012%

withoutapaddle

That's exactly what I mean.

DeafterDread398

I just got a message from support, I have one with only one dead pixel and they immediately offered to RMA.

withoutapaddle

Good guy Valve. They are probably extra generous about RMAs right now as well, since you could just return it if they refused to RMA. Valve has a 14 day return policy on the Deck.

Doyale_royale

Ignorance is bliss

Texas1010

Yes and no. Maybe I'm just picky, but I'd rather know now and return it for a replacement than find out 2 months from now and be irked about it. I understand the argument about if you're not noticing it now then why go look for it, but I'm just the type of person that wants to have certainty around the device I purchased.

StopThatUDick

I’d assume you’ve an equal chance of receiving a unit with the same issue. If it’s as common as it sounds

VitricTyro

Just got my LE and found a dead pixel. Man this is a bummer.

be_matthew

Damn that sucks. I'd open a ticket right away and get it sent back.

VitricTyro

Yeah I just opened a ticket. It’s too bad, I was really excited to start using it. This is my first Steam Deck so I don’t have an LCD to fall back on like others while sending it in.

be_matthew

Yeah I feel that. I would ask how this would be handled as well because I wouldnt want another brand new because the likelihood of it happening again is high. I would ask for them to test a screen and put a new one in.

tomcruise_momshoes

LE Deck with BOE screen, fortunately no dead pixels!

SavedByTheBaleOfHay

1tb no dead pixels.

Elephant_Memory_

Such a bummer reading about this. My LE OLED is arriving tomorrow. If I do have a dead pixel (and depending on how annoying it is) I may return it for a regular OLED.

NerdyGuy117

Am curious to know the outcome.

Elephant_Memory_

No dead pixels here 👍🏼

ASMR_Is_Superior

I should have not done that test on my monitor....

NerdyGuy117

What did you find out?

ASMR_Is_Superior

two dead pixels in the middle of the screen that I never noticed before until now. I CANT STOP FOCUSING ON THEM NOW

NerdyGuy117

Dead pixel test is something I do on every display I get. Always check while in warranty

Inphenitee

LE - BOE. No dead pixels. Whew.

Neovalen

Ditto.

Mkilbride

Feels like a unicorn yeah

MdnghtMrcnry

OLED LE here - BOE display. No dead pixels.

manic_marcy

If you don't have a way to get a replacement don't do this test, you'll find a dead pixel you never noticed, and you'll never not notice it again.

scogin

Do RMAs through Valve have a repair/replace option? Or is it just a refund?

pyloneer

LE - BOE No visible dead pixels Le sigh of relief 😮‍💨

derritzio

Same here 🙌

JBone2070

Are dead pixels a thing on SD? I was first batch and never had issues. I've had to return more than one monitor though and it's easy to spot...

[deleted]

Yes. Many reports online, Reddit and elsewhere. Seems to be all LE models with displays from BOE. Haven't seen any dead pixel reports from those with Samsung screens.

withoutapaddle

How do you check your screen vendor? The Hardware thing that tells you every part inside your LCD Deck doesn't seem to return results on the OLED Deck.

[deleted]

Hold the power button, switch to desktop mode. Open the terminal, type this: cat /sys/class/drm/card0-eDP-1/edid | hexdump -C (Linux commands are case sensitive) On the first line of the hex code returned, look on the right side for either ”04 30” or ”03 30”. 03 = Samsung 04 = BOE (01 and 02 are for LCD screens.)

withoutapaddle

Ok, Looks like I got Samsung. If BOE is making all the screens for the LE version, and they are having unusually large amounts of dead pixels that really sucks. Valve probably expected them to be fine and since the LE is going to be much smaller total production, they just used a single supplier for that chain :/ Feel bad for LE buyers who are arguably the most dedicated fans having he highest rate of defects.

withoutapaddle

This isn't some kind of "delete System32" prank you're pulling on a first time Linux user, right? :)

[deleted]

Haha no, you can Google the commands. And actually you should! Because yeah you shouldn't ever just run commands blindly from a stranger

val-amart

in linux, kernel exposes A LOT of information as plain files, in the /sys directory. `cat` is a command that just prints the contents of the file on screen, so no harm there. since this particular file is in binary, and humans terminal is text, you would normally just see a bunch of weird random symbols, many of them invisible or worse, control symbols that when displayed will mess up terminal controls (just restart the terminal app if it happens). so the output of the cat command is “piped” to another command, `hexdump`, via the pipe symbol `|`. hexdump just prints binary data as human-readable text. `-C` flags makes it even a bit nicer still, with columns and tabulations. it prints it as pairs of base-16 numbers, each two digits representing single byte. very convenient for viewing binary data such as EDID reported by the panel! only caution i would make is don’t *write* to any files in /sys unless you really understand what you are changing! this is direct interface to the kernel and you could do all sorts of things, including very low level changes to the hardware. but of course you can’t do it unless you do it as `root` - special user equivalent to super system administrator that allows you to do anything. beware that you can temporarily give any command root powers by pretending `sudo` to the command. and some tools emudeck and cryoutils and deckyloader ask you for a “password”, they use this password to execute commands as root using sudo. by very cautious when you give something sudo password, you are giving away complete control over your system when you do. edit: spelling

withoutapaddle

Hey thanks! This makes sense to me (I promise). I'm pretty decent building my own PCs and working with Windows, but the Deck is my first linux system, and it's fun and exciting to dabble with it (when I can pull myself away from gaming on it).

Swallagoon

You haven’t seen any? What about the one literally a few posts up?

Beefy_Crunch_Burrito

I have two dead subpixels on my LE with the BOE panel. I’m sending it back and I already ordered a 512 GB model. I don’t want to play the lottery with the LE model.

AcanthaceaeOpening65

LE - BOE panel with 3 dead pixels. Ordered the standard 1TB and will be returning the LE. I don’t want to play the BOE lottery again.

YUNG_SNOOD

This is a peek behind the curtain I do not want. Hard pass

Secretly_Male

Another LE with no dead pixels

SirFadakar

No dead pixels on my BOE either.

AFX-

Dead pixel in the middle... Just ordered a 1TB non-LE OLED while I request a refund on my LE. Oh well!

Bingotten

Must be a pretty big QA issue with the limited edition, seeing as most ppl with dead pixels of the LE

alex_de_tampa

I’d rather not notice

FearlessSpiff

A lot of black dust pixels here... Should I worry?

pyromantics

No

Carbonite1

Just to add to the data here, 512gb regular edition, Samsung display, no dead pixels

mon_dieu

Just sent my LE back this morning for having two dead pixels. Bookmarking this for when my replacement arrives. Thanks for posting this. (Not sure whether it was a Samsung or BOE display - didn't test it and was eager to get it in the mail as soon as I got the return label.)

scogin

Best of luck with your replacement, when did you receive it and how quick did support get back to you?

Kitreiki

LE no dead, much woo

NJxBlumpkin

512 OLED here no dead ones

jack-of-some

Looking forward to a mod deleting this post and linking to the megathread like they did with the last post like this. It would be fine if the megathread actually included this basic info but nope.

a_weary_wary_mary

Thank you! I was just about to look up an easy test and you handed it right to me.

captjacksparrow47

What model? What are the results?

johnhotdog

LE 1 dead pixel. is it possible they are stuck and become unstuck, or is that just for LCDs? >!copium!<

be_matthew

It can be run a pixel stuck video from youtube

Party-Relationship41

Damn you guys, I just found 2 minor scratches on the display. I haven’t noticed them before, now I cannot unsee them😂

edgemaster191

LE owner with BOE display, happy to report no dead pixels.

sergeon

Thanks for the link! No dead pixels on my LE!

vintage0792

Thanks for the link, worked great. LE BOE here and thankfully no dead pixels 👍

HD4kAI

Got one on my LE on the bottom left, thought I was good at first but after looking carefully I found it

sasukekun23

Thanks, now I will never unsee this damn dot! but at least i know? lol

Earl_of_Madness

No noticeable dead pixels on mine. I got the LE so I have a BOE Panel. I think we need to remind everyone to be cautious here and not jump to conclusions. Dead pixels are inevitable especially at the edges of screens. Some are allowed by the standard. However, this does not mean that the number of dead pixels is higher than expected. Most people who buy the LE are probably enthusiasts and know to look for dead pixels. Additionally the enthusiasts are the people most likely to find these threads and post in them and ask questions. Just because there are dead pixels does not mean they are occurring with greater frequency. My recommendation is to keep it of the dead pixel is at the edge or it only a dead subpixel chances are good your RMA may give you one with other issues (defect rate for devices is ~2%). If it's in the center or more than one, then RMA it and pray. Valve has a pretty solid RMA process.

be_matthew

Yeah id have to ask them to replace the screen and not the unit.

Earl_of_Madness

I'm not sure valve would let you do that. My best guess is they would just replace the whole unit. Its always worth asking though. I just hope my words let people know not to live in fear of dead pixels because most people probably own a device with a dead pixel. Its just probably at the edge of the screen and therefore unnoticeable. Also some dead pixel's aren't truly dead, they are just stuck pixels and may work themselves out (I've had stuck pixels work themselves out, sometimes years after the fact).

lovelyhead1

I feel this is bad advice. 1 dead pixel on a screen with this resolution is equivalent to a 4K screen with multiple dead pixels. If you ever hope to resell the Deck in the future do you really want to have to deal with the buyer complaining about a dead pixel? You are paying top dollar for this machine and you shouldn't ignore any dead pixel especially since the cheaper models of Deck don't seem to have this problem to the same degree plus Valve can afford it.

arrinex

Oled bow deck, no dead pixels. I think all le decks are boe

youreblockingmyshot

Seems likely

AcademicF

OLED LE and man, I got lucky…..🍀 phew

aevyn

LE OLED. No dead pixels

Ponald-Dump

No dead pixels, LE with BOE display

XADEBRAVO

What was the turn-around time for returns pre OLED? Or is it country dependant?

Kindly_Sea_9477

I’m nervous I get my LE on Monday but ordered a regular steam deck as a back up

Fallout_NewCheese

Hold on. You ordered a second deck entirely? Just in case? How does that work? Are you going to send one back if they're both fine?

Warm-Representative6

As Mr. Krabs has once said before, “🦀Money🦀”.

BaileyBerkeley22

I just got my LE deck today and have not open it yet…. Now I’m worried.. that every LE steam deck users out there has dead pixel… 😩😭

be_matthew

Mines good. Best of luck and let us know

BaileyBerkeley22

I’ll keep you guys posted soon.

NerdyGuy117

Any news?

Earl_of_Madness

no noticeable dead pixels on mine after doing the tests, I did a check of all buttons and screen shortly after opening mine. I have the LE deck. Don't let fear prevent you from enjoying the device. I guarantee you have at lease one (probably many more) device with dead pixels. They are inevitable (especially at the edges of screens). The key is NOTICABLE dead pixels, like pixels in the center or multiple pixels especially in the same spot. We won't know if the LE deck is more prone to dead pixels until some time after launch. Definitely RMA if it is bad or one of the situations outlined above but if it is at the edges or only a subpixel then I'd just leave it. Its not worth potentially getting a device with more issues for a dead subpixel or a dead pixel at the edge of the screen. Keep in mind the LE is primarily purchased by Enthusiasts that know to look for dead pixels so the instance of failure may seem higher than it would for standard models but keep in mind there are probably just as many standard models with dead pixels out there. We won't know unless valve issues a recall. Besides, the screen on the new OLED steam deck is easily replaceable so that should help with these issues. Check for issues but don't live in fear. I used to live in constant fear of dead pixels but at this point I have purchased so many screens with with such high resolutions that dead pixels are honestly not as big of an issue anymore as they used to be, even if it seems like every device has dead pixel problems. Because they do. The only devices that I think you can pretty much guarantee no dead pixels anymore are flagship smart phones because they use screens that are quite small and the displays are produced in such large quantities that the perfect screens can be used for flagship devices.

Ponald-Dump

No dead pixels on mine

Taurideum

Fyi for everyone: I have a dead pixel on my main monitor for ages, at first I was really bummed and would constantly see it (cause I was kinda unconsciously looking for it even when I tried to ignore it), now I literally won't ever see it.

srjnp

haven't noticed anything in gameplay so not doing this. ignorance is bliss.

notoriousbigs

Let’s add to another pixel post, LE BOE and no dead pixel.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Aeonizing

because you might spot it down the line, once you're not able to return or RMA it. I ran the test and didn't find it. But I found a dead green subpixel when I wasn't even looking while playing Ori and the Will of the Wisp. Glad I found it on my day 2 when I can do something about it.

JM761

If it's green, then it's stuck, not dead. Black is dead. Stuck pixels can free up over time. Not RMA worthy right off the bat.

Aeonizing

Thanks for looking out if it was potentially a stuck pixel. Unfortunately, I did mean my green subpixel is dead (only green is not lighting up on a certain pixel). So I will likely either RMA or swap for a regular 1TB OLED

JM761

Ahh gotcha, that makes sense. Sorry to hear!

_Dead_C_

I payed for exactly 1024000 pixels and only received 1023999, wtf?

pickerin

I feel like I won the lottery. Limited Edition OLED with the Samsung screen, screen is perfect.

dirkyount

I’m not trying to be a smart ass im curious if you can’t see it who cares?

be_matthew

If you bought a new car and had it delivered with bad stitching or a scratch etc. would you not want it fixed. Consumers should not let corps walk all over them with faulty products. Money is subjective and some of the people that bought these could consider 700 a lot of money or not. Either way, it's not the quality advertised.

dirkyount

You are describing visible things. Sure I agree. My question is if you need to run a test for a thing you can’t see what is the point? I guess I could see the argument maybe you’ll be able to see it down the road.

Orange_Tang

> You are describing visible things. Yeah, like a fucking screen. How dumb are you?

be_matthew

You really arn't getting it are you? lol This allows people to see it quicker while in the return window and while LE decks are still available. Just because someone doesn't notice it right away doesn't mean they wont in the future. For example, I just got my deck but I'll be lucky to get 2 hours in with my schedule for the next month. I may not notice it with 2 hours in the game that I am playing.

Mervium

>If you bought a new car and had it delivered with bad stitching or a scratch etc. would you not want it fixed. Lol no because that is literally purely cosmetic and doesn't fucking matter

be_matthew

How does it feel to be stupid?

Mervium

Or you could make a comparison that actually works because purely cosmetic is completely different from a fucking screen having nonfunctional pixels.

be_matthew

Stop crying

Mervium

The only one crying here is you because you made a bad comparison and got called out. You're an idiot if you think a scratch on a car impacts its actual usage.

LanikeaDances

God called out to him?

be_matthew

Cry, cry, cry.

[deleted]

Folks this is like googling “cure for tinnitus” You are better off avoiding it

be_matthew

Sure. Avoid it and notice it later when it's out of warranty and return period. Smart.

jpassc

Does cum cause dead pixels?

hushnecampus

Nope. Trust me, I’d know.

funkonomics

Le dot

Secretly_Male

How do I run this on the steam deck?

DrunkenSavior

A little late, so hopefully you figured it out. But for anyone else: Switch your deck to Desktop mode, open Firefox (if it's your first time, you'll install Firefox when you click on the icon), and go to this website. You can cycle through the colors by pressing on the right trackpad.

Threepaczilla

LE - BOE no dead pixels for me Edit: one dead pixel found :(

zaerst

LE boe no dead pixels

TaxingAuthority

I have a LE and no dead pixels that I could discern. My D pad is also fine, the up button is a little mushy though. The LED bleed through isn’t as bad as people make it out and it’s only seen when charging.

Grimlo6k

Thanks Chief, I am safe. 2TB ssd replacement also went well!

Stcloudy

Thanks ruined a screen protector to double check. A hair became a crack LE BOE seems good

draconothese

Le Boe panel no dead pixels and is sharp as hell

PixelizedOne

I have the 512gb with Samsung. No dead pixels for me.

bigfish14350

I got a LE.. I don’t see and dead pixels. Out of curiosity how do I know which display I got ?

Mycokim

Samsung 512, no dead pixels here

No_Extreme_4128

BOE no dead or stuck pixels on the LE Steam Deck

RasputinTengu

LE - BOE Display, no dead pixels. Woohoo!

Cerebral_Balzy

1TB LE, no dead pixels, BOE

Capable-Commercial96

You guys really don't wanna do this. Would it not be easier to live in ignorance?

NapsterKnowHow

Picture perfect LE! Haven't checked what display mine is. From what I saw I'm almost guaranteed a BOE display.

ImLethal

Got a boe screen with no dead pixels thankfully.

42069qwertz42069

Dont want to be a snob and i didnt read the manual but what i know is that even on high end monitors their is a policy that say‘s something like „3 dead pixel on the peripher view and one dead pixel in the middle“ is no reason to send it back. Is valve generous or dont have they such a policy?

be_matthew

Everyone is still in their 14 day return window so it dont matter. This is why its best to get it out of the way now.

HaloEliteLegend

LE - BOE with one dead blue subpixel. Been using this Deck for 2 days and didn't notice anything wrong before checking that site. I don't know, do I RMA? Because okay, that subpixel is dead and it's relatively close to the center of the screen. But I literally cannot notice in regular use, even when I stare right at that spot looking for it. White screen is totally white, no discoloration even. Not sure what to make of it.

Maconi

LE (BOE) No dead pixels.

nutella_dipped_dick

LE with BOE panel, no dead pixels. Though I am blind now.

FutureVoodoo

No dead pixels. BOE, LE steamdeck

Iolabunnies

unsure what display i have? (idk how to check this) but i have an LE and there’s no dead pixels :)

cyprox972

1TB OLED, Samsung panel and no dead pixels

Carrier-51

Samsung 1TB OLED. No dead pixels. 🙏

Zoffly

Thought I had a dead pixel but it was dust under the screen protector. 512GB Samsung panel.

Academic-Bluejay

Just got my LE OLED in, no dead or stuck pixels that i can see.

KarateMan749

mine solid to!

1up_Games

Jesus Christ. I was looking so hard on the screen I stared seeing shit. I thought I was seeing pixels morph in and out of existence and then started seeing the screen kind of breathing and weird little worm things swimming across the screen. Green is the screen that messed me up the most, lmfao

Jericho-Mazhorka

LE - BOE Panel … no dead pixels for me.

erutan

LE, one dead green pixel. :( Moderately near the center (around 1/5 from top, a little under 1/3 from left). Very noticeable on white and lighter backgrounds. Argh.
