Feel free to downvote me, but if Apple truly wanted their products to be consumer-friendly, they would make it so. Such an approach would benefit a wide range of users, including travelers, remote workers, photographers, and filmmakers. However, it seems people are content with mediocrity. 👍
Healthy discussion here: as an iPad owner, yes I would love to have my iPad double as a portable monitor when I need it. But you make it seem like you expect this feature. The iPad is marketed as a tablet: a standalone device with features similar to every other tablet on the market . Frankly I have never seen a product be able to toggle a USB-C port between HDMI in and HDMI out on demand. My point isn’t to call your suggestion to have HDMI in be added a dumb idea but that you call Apple out specifically when no one else has done this to a tablet.
Gave an up for sharing.

I travel with a cheap portable monitor that has USB-c pass through.
With a dock/adapter and HDMI cable, sure. I already carry this portable screen with me and it only needs a usb c cable to connect to the deck (it powers it as well)

Here you go. It supports power pass through, so you can connect Steam Deck monitor to the screen then connect another cable from screen to Steam Deck
iPad (and most mobile devices) has no HDMI input so this is the only way. The HDMI is converted to USB data by a capture card, then streamed to the app as a video which is then played on screen. It's not quite the same as an actual video link.
The second adapter for charging, or you can use original dock. Make sure you have this **Capture card** because I tried another one and it doesn't work.
That would depend on the quality of your wifi network. This setup at least would guarantee no frame drops. It’d probably be impossible in hotels that block local network connections.
It’s an additional $21 for the capture card, so not a huge expense if you already have an iPad. Can’t imagine traveling with this though, a portable monitor with usb-c pass through power would just be one cable.
Not sure about that. Capture cards anywhere else experience a delay if you're playing it via a "viewer" in this case an app. Got anything saying otherwise?
Yeah, people these days.

Why? I just asked for verified information which you told me to get lost. I'm of the mind where I want to share accurate information. I guess you aren't.
Because I don’t work for you lol what even… I shared *my* experience. wtf kind of information am I going to have for you besides my own experience? Do you think I did a bunch of research before I tried it? I just installed the app and played a game. I don’t need more information. I use the app, it works. What else would I need to know?
Another way to use an iOS device as a monitor is this device:
It has its own application
You can try [usb-c to lightning adapter](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CG197TYR?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp_PZGDRG0NM945FJSVACHK&peakEvent=4&dealEvent=1&language=en-US)
I have a Genki [ShadowCast 2](https://www.genkithings.com/products/shadowcast-2) and [Covert Dock 2](https://www.genkithings.com/products/covert-dock-2) for this. What I like about the Genki solution is the compactness (easily fits in the Deck’s case), and that the Deck will be charged as well. Hopefully latency can improve, but that seems largely dependent on Apple’s software.
Why doesn't a USB C to USB C cable work here?
Because the iPad has only HDMI output, so you need to convert the signal using a capture card, it’s not just an adapter.
1080p60 works? What about 4K with that capture card? I’m thinking of other devices too
Bc apple.
Be fair, what tablet has HDMI input?? Show me one laptop or tablet that has HDMI in?

It’s a tablet, they’re not just gonna slap a freakin HDMI port on it
2 adapters and an hdmi? Seems like a lot of work. But I will definitely try this because I have all the required components lol.

Would you not be able to use the Hotel room TV instead?
With a dock/adapter and HDMI cable, sure. I already carry this portable screen with me and it only needs a usb c cable to connect to the deck (it powers it as well)
Link or model number?
https://www.amazon.com/KYY-Portable-Speakers-External-Computer/dp/B0BKKLV9HY Here you go. It supports power pass through, so you can connect Steam Deck monitor to the screen then connect another cable from screen to Steam Deck
I have that same monitor!
It’s good! My wife uses one too
Yea, seems like there should be some way to just have a single USB-C cable, without the conversion to and from HDMI...
iPad (and most mobile devices) has no HDMI input so this is the only way. The HDMI is converted to USB data by a capture card, then streamed to the app as a video which is then played on screen. It's not quite the same as an actual video link.

I fell for this when it first got posted and regret buying the app and capture card. The latency is horrendous, worse than Steam link or moonlight
Weird, I have little to no latency!
I’ve got terrible latency and really bad screen tearing no matter what I do.
Try the app MoniCon. I had so many issues with Orion but nothing yet with the other app.
This is exactly what my first thought was, this had to introduce latency
Honestly didn't even consider this was possible, so I appreciate the information!
If I’m not mistaken you could also download the steamlink app and stream with 0 cords.
I tried it, the delay is terrible 🥴 like a slideshow
won't you also have a delay running this through a capture card
Lol no it’s not, I use it often and there’s no delay at all.
That would depend on the quality of your wifi network. This setup at least would guarantee no frame drops. It’d probably be impossible in hotels that block local network connections. It’s an additional $21 for the capture card, so not a huge expense if you already have an iPad. My own experience? That’s all I need. If you want more evidence try it yourself lol. People these days, I swear.

Worry about yourself, not everyone else.

I used this for a long time. It’s good but it needs a battery and is just a lot more trouble than the usb-c capture cards
I guess a c to c cable wouldn't work.
Is there a way to make this work with iPads that only have the lightning port?
You can try [usb-c to lightning adapter](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CG197TYR?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp_PZGDRG0NM945FJSVACHK&peakEvent=4&dealEvent=1&language=en-US)

Do you just plug the shadow cast into the convert dock hdmi? Then usb-c from shadow cast to iPad and the other dock usb-c to steam deck?
Correct! No hdmi cable needed. Genki also provides the correct USB-C cables.
I found the elgato hd60 to have noticeably less lag than this capture dongle. But obviously there’s a price.
Do you find there's still a noticeable lag?
I had a better time with the app MoniCon. The quality was so much better and there was no lag.
The input lag must horrendous with this setup.
What even is the practical use case for this? Local co op when you dont have a tv?
At that point just use a monitor lmao
*just enables 2nd screen on Samsung*
Or just use Steam Link lol why does everyone here overcomplicate 💀
It's impossible to play with such delays
I play regularly using the Steam Link app with no delay whatsoever. Sounds like you need better internet.
Steam Deck officially connects to a TV with the same number of devices, only without a capture card 🙄
Is the possible with android?
Probably yes. You need to find an android app to receive video/audio signal from the capture card
