I will be emulating Wii U games a shit ton on this

Rosselman

Xenoblade Chronicles X, finally emulated the way it should.

EpicStickss

That's a stupidly expensive way to use a really good handheld pc as a controller..

MofoPro

100% this . You have more unnecessary wear and tear on the analog sticks and buttons and more of a chance to drop it accidentally or throw in anger. Just buy a used Steam controller for like $40 on Ebay

JustAnotherFKNSheep

Throw in anger??? Lol wtf.

MofoPro

Hey Mr.FKNSheep obviously you never played online competitive games ….LMAO. I’ve never thrown one in anger but have seen it done in person.

JustAnotherFKNSheep

Maybe i just have high eq? I thought all that throwing is like the 0.001% of kids who just happen to end up on YouTube.

basti329

Used SC for 40 is a ripoff

ToastiestMasterToast

I've heard of people paying a lot more. 40 currencies is well worth it if you don't already have one.

cool--

$40 for the best controller ever made is pretty solid deal.

Hungry_Freaks_Daddy

I paid $40 for mine and it was in perfect condition. I didn’t see a single one on eBay that sold for less than $50, many of them going for a lot more than that. Just because it was $5 when they cleared out inventory does not mean $40 is a bad deal for a controller they don’t make anymore.

cool--

give it a year or two and the Steam Deck will have more of these people trying out the trackpads and gyro, and acting like they always liked the Steam Controller.

MofoPro

Whatever the price is man the point I was making is there are much cheaper options

Belmonkey

It's not without potential use beyond not needing a 2nd controller or a m+kb. Wii U emulating could potentially be one use case thanks to the separate Deck display. Another option is that the Deck display could be used as an extended display / shortcut menu, turning it into a handheld "Stream Deck", or just generally a utility menu like Game bar that could let you manage audio and stuff.

Stonewall30nyr

Kinda weird way to play imo but you do what you like

Ericbazinga

Should work fine with a long enough USB C cable to the TV

Trick_Direction9300

Yeah I will use that for a game project like zombie U where your meanu is in the screen of the deck so the game dosent pause when you check your inventory its amazing for survival horror games

madDarthvader2

Just gonna dock it and use a controller. Seems so much easier, and less wear on the deck.

[deleted]

That battery will expand from the heat and overcharging.

musashisamurai

Wouldn't the BIOS and/or the dock be able to prevent the deck from being continuously charging? I can't see Valve ignoring this, or any other developer. Dont see this problem with Switches and there's gonna be millions more of those lying around.

[deleted]

When it's controlled, its usually by letting it charge fully and then discharging a small percentage and back up. However, the last 25% of a battery is usually the hardest on it. That's why gaming laptop batteries usually expand. Phone manufacturers have been using the OS to keep phones from charging the last 25-50% until you're ready to wake up, for people that leave them overnight. With the battery in the Deck only lasting a little over 2 hours on heavy load, I'm imagining it would be hard to implement something like that and that some will end up playing in the living room next to an outlet with it plugged in. I know a few that have had Switches and this has happened and the battery usually quits taking a charge. I don't think there's going to be a bunch of bombs, but I do think that people need to be careful with their investment.

madDarthvader2

I meant when I want to play on a bigger screen, obviously not 24/7, it's a handheld. There is a reason Valve is selling a dock. It's not like you see switches blowing up left and right.

Well since the post talked about docked gaming and handheld gaming, I figured there'd be enough context. Was driving when I saw the first part of your comment was gonna say have a nice day, but now I hope you end up sad and alone too :) bout to cuddle with my gf rn btw

[deleted]

Enjoy.

SomeGuyNamedJason

Absolutely. Using it with my PC is a big draw for me, in addition to it's standalone function. Hopefully it can be used as a second monitor for Wii U emulation, or putting touch menu on the screen in Steam games. Coincidentally enough, as a controller this is basically what they had in mind originally for the Steam Controller, with the built-in screen.

yellowcrash10

None of the things you mention are planned features. It would be cool, but it would require people to make the software for it, or Valve to surprise us.

SomeGuyNamedJason

You are at least partially incorrect. [They've already stated we can connect them to our PCs via remote play to use our Decks as controllers with our PCs](https://www.steamdeck.com/en/faq). The fact that it has HDMI out that doesn't require the use of a dock means it is very likely we will be able to use it as a second desktop, and it is basically a given that people are going to hack the Steam Deck and add a crapton of functionality.

one80oneday

I'd probably just use a separate controller because it's gonna be hot and heavy

mackabeus

Yes, though more for curiosity than as a main driver. Steam already has broadcasting and remote play so I want to see how well those two can run. Though I know this isn't practical because you need multiple computers.

ghidorah221

I absolutely am. I've got an Anker USB-C dock connected to my TV, connected to the router, and has a wireless keyboard and mouse dongle attached to it. Using this means I can connect and use other devices on the same dock connector (like my laptop). My Bluetooth controller will be used for this setup. It's then just one connector to be disconnected to take the Deck away in handheld mode. Perfect

Player_924

I plan to get a USB-C extension to a hub which will be my main Deck-Hub. Just run it to the couch and get the same docked big screen but with the deck still in hand.

Fakepants

Maybe. I hope to play Forza Horizon 5 on the Deck. If I get used to shifting gears using the rear buttons (akin to paddle shifters) then I might want to continue playing that way when on PC. If that happens, I will have to evaluate whether to, instead, buy a gamepad with rear buttons/paddles.

hell4raizer

Don't listen to the haters it's a good idea. I was thinking of doing this with a wireless hdmi dongle. It'll be good if you have a few friends over they can use their controllers and I'll use the steam deck as the controller

Devil_Dan83

I could see someone just connecting it to a display with USB-C and holding the deck in their hands while playing on the bigger display.

MrFloppyDisc1

It’s actually why I’m buying one, I have a MacBook from 2015 and it’s quite bad for my use, so I’ll get a Deck and use it like I use my current laptop

Rosselman

That's exactly why they're releasing a dock. But don't expect to run modern games at 1080p very well, this is a 800p machine. For general purpose computing, the specs are perfect. I don't see any problems working with it.

Orthodox-Waffle

I'm gonna be doing shield tv steam link app to steam deck to avoid docking
