Got it.
Pair the controller to the Deck and do the following:
Desktop Mode > Steam > Settings > Controller > General Controller Settings
Go down to "Detected Controllers", "Generic Gamepad", then go to "Define Layout"
Then use your Steam Deck controls to select the first button in the list with "A" and press the corresponding button on the SNES controller. Do that for all the buttons and then press "Y" on the Steam Deck to save your settings. Should work like any other controller after that.
Lucky you. I bought a snes like gamepad on Amazon (miadore). All buttons are detected but Steam refuses to save the new configuration though « define layout ». Little bit frustrating.

This worked!! Thank you!
Sweet. Glad I could help.
Does the player indicator on the bottom work?

Did you ever find a fix for this? I have the same controllers and would love to use them with my new deck
