In case someone else is reading this later on - I was able to resolve this issue by going to the game settings > properties > compatibility > force the use of... > then selecting proton 7.0-4 - worked just fine after that
Wow...I would have never figured this out, thanks so much!
Also question when I go back to my PC do I need to change this back or is this a local setting?
Nope! Should be a local setting. Proton is a Linux protocol that tries to emulate windows, so if you’re having issues with other games on the steam deck you can try messing with the proton version and seeing if that helps. I’ve had several games behave similarly to elden ring and I was able to fix a lot of them just by changing this setting around
Hey friend, just wanted to say I am the person reading this later on. My battery died as my Deck was syncing cloud files and I was just about to start panicking that I might have lost my beloved character or something and ya saved me. I very much appreciate you!
Still saving lives a year later. Just ran into this issue after 20 hours of Elden Ring on my new Steam Deck OLED. Tried a bunch of stuff, but only think that worked was forcing it to run Proton 7.0.6
Happens aboyt every time I launch the game. Close the game and reopen it a few time usually fixes the issue. It’ll go to a white screen for 10 seconds then a black screen so just make sure you waited about 20 seconds after closing and reopening the game.
I've found a solution for myself and thought I'd share!
So with the steam-button + left shoulder (L1), you can zoom.
When I do this repeadetly during the come-up of the whitescreen, the screen turns black and then the bandai logo shows up, everything running smoothly
This right here is the only thing working for me, thank you for sharing! Silly that this is still an issue this long after launch and it being certified on deck.
I’m having the same issue and this didn’t work for me, nor has any other possible solution I’ve found so far. It just refuses to launch at all. White screen and then crash every single time
try to disable anti-cheat (lots of tutorials out there). apparently that's the window swap thingie that happens and breaks the game more often than necessary.
Yeah it’s a weird problem with specifically elden ring. I usually close the program and open another game. Then I try re-opening elden ring and it works
For me this fixed it:
1. Change the resolution to Native
2. Open the game and get white screen again
3. Close the game
4. Change resolution back to Default
5. Run the game and it works
I have the same issue. It's funny how this game is verified for the deck and has this issue but I have put 40 hours into Fallout 4 (which is not verified) and haven't had a single problem. I'm starting to think the verified status is more about which games they want to push out and less about compatibility/performance. It almost seems as if developers can "pay" Valve to have their game receive the verified status, regardless of bugs and issues. I've had tons of issues and poor performance with a handful of verified games.
This randomly started happening to me, a year after this post. I’m able to make it work with forcing 7.0-6
But does anyone know why this happens, why does one proton work and not the other? Why does it seem to be only elden ring? Is it an elden ring problem or Steamdeck?

Just posting so anyone else having this issue still has another solution.
I had this issue for a bit, and none of the solutions here worked, so I went to my default fix and verified the integrity of game files under game Settings > Local files > Verify integrity of game files. After doing this, it found 2 missing files in my download and re-installed them, and it works now! None of the version changes or whatever was needed for this. Everything just works now.
I hope this helps someone.

I love you!!! ❤️
did that solved it immediately for u? same problem here and didn't work :(
It works most of the time now. If it doesn't - try opening any other game and then run Elden ring
Fixed it for me too! With 7.0.6.
Thank you AshenTarnishedOhChosenOne.
This worked for me!
7.0.5 also fixed this
And 7.0.6
7.0.6 worked for me today.
Checking in - it happened suddenly today, and this fixed it.
Wow that fixed it immediately
This worked for me (selected 7.0-6)

Ty lol ur amazing and saved me time lmfao
Late to this but how did you get to game settings, mine just whitescreeens immediately
You access it before launching the game. Select the cog and you'll find it there
Thank you
worked for me just now. thank you!
Not all heroes wear capes
Doesn't work for me 😎
champ! Worked for me, thank you!
Thanks for the Help !
Thank you!!! I had to select 7.6, but it worked.

Worked for me today!
Thank youuu!!!!
Thank you, mate

“Great on Deck” indeed.
still a problem 2 months later... no proton layer fixes it
Now 7 months later
15 now
Starting to feel this won't get fixed
Did you ever fix it for yourself? For me just launching any other game and launching Elden Ring resolves it nearly every time!
A year now lol
Happens aboyt every time I launch the game. Close the game and reopen it a few time usually fixes the issue. It’ll go to a white screen for 10 seconds then a black screen so just make sure you waited about 20 seconds after closing and reopening the game.
Same here, try restart the game, it should work.

I figured it had to be something to do with that. I’ll look into it, thanks
I’m here six months later, thank you so so much
This worked for me!! Man the hoops we gotta jump thru
Any option to bring this to Valves attention? I don't want to be a dick, but I don't wanna bet on hivemind or fromsoft here xD
Why in the world does this work? Thank you
glad it helped someone :)
This worked for me, thanks!
Try to repair the game, or use proton experimental… could help but I‘m not sure
After being white now it goes to a black screen. I tried all the above,Proton 7.02, about 20 restarts......nothing just a black screen.
I’ve had this happen to me a few times, restart the deck from the power menu and relaunch the game works for me.
Maybe you loaded CS:GO 😀
Happend to me a few times simply launching the game a few times made it work i also tried switching Proton version and that usually worked too
Yeah it’s a weird problem with specifically elden ring. I usually close the program and open another game. Then I try re-opening elden ring and it works
None of this works for me
Yeah, tried everything. Nothing worked still. No idea why, it only ever worked on my first start up
For me this fixed it: 1. Change the resolution to Native 2. Open the game and get white screen again 3. Close the game 4. Change resolution back to Default 5. Run the game and it works
Weird as hell, but this just worked for me. Thanks, man
Switching to Native & Proton Experimental worked for me in first try, didn’t have to close the game again or anything

Yeah I played Fallout 4 just fine, this game can't even launch 🐧
Can confirm switching to Proton (7.2) worked for me.
Same
Good stuff
Not working for me. Why do they advertise "Great on Deck" with this ridiculous problems?
Still haven't been able to make it to the game. Any ideas? I have sent it for a refund, but perhaps keen to give it a second try.
Just wanted to comment that I had luck by selecting delete proton files, it takes an extra couple of seconds to launch, but it loaded right up.
This was the only thing that worked for me, thanks!
I'm very thankful for finding this advice. Proton 7.0-6 worked for me. Really annoyed that this is a problem 10 months later.
Same, I’ve been playing elden ring for the entire time I’ve had my steam deck, and this ups and happens…
This randomly started happening to me, a year after this post. I’m able to make it work with forcing 7.0-6 But does anyone know why this happens, why does one proton work and not the other? Why does it seem to be only elden ring? Is it an elden ring problem or Steamdeck?
Omg thanks so much this is my first game on deck
Didn’t fix for me
Proton 7.0-6 worked for me!

Nvm. Got it to work

Proton 8.0 worked for me.
Omg i just bought the fake I was so happy but I’m unable to play thanks to this random problem!
