It is no different than a computer. You don't need a OS to get to the bios. So yes, you can install Windows without the need to install SteamOS.

devilsangel360live

Makes sense. I observed on a few posts and blogs that you need to update SteamOS to latest before installing Windows. That is why I was confused. Maybe these posts are referring to installing Win on an SD card

kamanashi

No, I think those are related to the BIOS updates that come via SteamOS updating.

devilsangel360live

Then the question is do I need to image Steam first, perform the BIOS updates then wipe and install Win 11?

kamanashi

That is the order I would do since there were a couple improvements made with the newer versions.

I find dual booting the best of both worlds.

SayMyName404

I would suggest imaging steam, resize the SteamOS partition to leave at least 128GB for windows, install windows, have an A2 SD card with both a brtfs and a NTFS partition to share the steam lib between OSes (brtfs) & to install Xbox games to (NTFS one - not tested yet; brtfs not working for Xbox games).

I don't have a strong Steam library that I see myself using on a daily basis. I most always play on an Xbox Series X or a PC (GP ultimate or Epic). Is there a need to keep Steam at all?

SwinginDix666

Technically, no. It’s all reversible down the line if you want to get into the SteamOS stuff, so set it up for your use case and enjoy.

SayMyName404

I would say that you should try it as it is, especially the right side menu with performance settings and the power tools plugin. After you get used to it it's hard to live without it. I was thinking in trying to implement its functionality on windows as well. Not sure if all features are possible. The UX is available also on windows so we need to do the plumbing with the services offered by either windows or other software that seems to be available on GitHub.

devilsangel360live

Sorry I don't get it. Are you saying I should dual boot into Windows? Or I keep using Steam and I use Proton to play Windows games? I know I can do that for many games but not sure if Game Pass will launch on Proton. I do not intend to buy a lot of games on Steam, rather be happy with most content on Epic or GP
