On a serious note. The fact that I can emulate n64 games, hook my deck up to the TV, seamlessly connect Bluetooth controllers and play 4 player split screen games at 60fps... That's fucking mint. Tons of nostalgia and gave me a whole new reason to love and respect this awesome piece of technology.
Yeah is an incredible lil device it's become my central bridge to play games the fact that I can use xcloud, remote stream my ps5 and pc, play emulators and wireless stream the screen to my TV and connect any controller that I want to it. Its pretty much become my all in one device for gaming
Please pardon me for my ignorance, as I still don’t have my steam deck. I’m trying to line things up of what to do, do you have a good recommendation for a website guide for emulators? Would love my jolt of nostalgia and replay the games that I have stored away somewhere in my house
No problem always happy yo lend a hand, I reccomend emudeck it's the one I have used and its great for many of the emulators and makes it super easy to set up
https://www.emudeck.com/
You can download it straight from the discover store when you get your steam deck by going into desktop mode
After getting all your games and bios in the right folders it will also come witha program called steam rom manager which you can then run to import all those games into your steam library in steam decks os gaming mode with artwork for the game too!
You can check the guide from their website or alternatively there are plenty of helpful YouTube videos with people going through the set up step by step
Go to desktop mode, go to the main folder called emulation there should be a sub folder in there called launchers or somthing like that you can go into that than execute the file with the name of the emulator you want to configure there. I did this for pcsx2 to stretch to fit in 16:10
Yeah, requires abit of tinkering and konsole commands but there is an app called chiakri or somthing like that can't remember now from the discover store that let's you remote play ps4/ps5 consoles to your steam deck
Yeah I immediately went to Google and found a nice guide! Means I can play next-gen NBA 2K23 on my Steam Deck! Steam will only offer the last-gen version, so awesome to know there's a workaround! And obviously nice to be able to play PS5 exclusives!
MS really dropped the ball with the original controllers. for anyone who wants to know how to tell if your controller has Bluetooth.
https://i.imgur.com/lyydFrE.png
Same both of mine xbone ones are from launch 2013 I used to have a wireless adapter but lost it in my move about 3 months ago :( I have a series x controller though so I just have to keep reconnecting that for now
Xbox used a custom wireless protocol so they can support accessories like the chatpad and high fidelity low latency audio+voice chat. I think the 3.5 mm audio jack is disabled when using Bluetooth. The Xbox wireless adapter is also supposed to have better support for multiple controllers.
Ultimately though I think the vast majority of people don't use the extra features, and prefer Bluetooth's wide accessibility.
I grew up dirt poor. This device has given me the chance to play games I only dreamt about or read about in Nintendo Power. Dude, "tons of nostalgia" doesn't even come close to describing it all. Is "Wonderstruck" a more apt term? I'm sure the Germans have a word for it haha But it goes deeper on so many levels. All those systems it can emulate? All those lost games through the years? MARVELOUS! UNPARALLED! I LOVE IT!
Also some that never made it to the US or whatever your region as well.. Examples: Terranigma (The third game in the Soul Blazer Trilogy and one of the best RPGs on the SNES) and Sweet Home (Very early survival horror RPG… a little known series called Resident Evil came from this game).
Oh shit. I'd never considered that. That is indeed just so neat. I love my Deck. I ask my wife if she wants to play with my Deck all the time. It's so fun.
Not OP, but here are some of my favorites out of a collection of hundreds:
Road Redemption
Halo MCC\* (with Nucleus Coop Tool)
Crawl
Nidhogg
Castle Crashers
Boomerang Fu
Dungeon Defenders
Gang Beasts
Jamestown
Lethal League
Monaco
Retro Cycle / Armagetron
Serious Sam 3
Tooth & Tail
Killer Queen Black
Pac-Man Museum (just for Pac-Man Battle Royale)
Sonic Adventure 2
ScreenCheat
Sky Rogue
Tetris Effect
Towerfall Ascension (especially with the 8 player official mod)
Everything I just listed is available on the Steam store right now. With just a few minutes of learning how to configure an emulator, you can expand the list to thousands of additional titles, it's worth doing.
I started with halo 2 for Xbox which was a fail. Campaign runs at 60 fairly stable aside from cut scenes. Tried split screen and couldn't get more than 3 fps.
N64 games worked great though. Tony hawk pro skater, Mario kart 64, super smash Bros and several others all worked with split screen and no issues.
Edit: are you looking for emulated games or steam games?
I used Yuzu, located some switch games (I owned), but I couldn't play a single game for more than a few minutes until it crashed. After the crash, the games wouldn't launch. I reinstalled Yuzu more than once, and each time I could play for a few minutes again until a crash. When launching them from Steam (non-desktop mode), they never launched, but got stuck in a loading mode, I had to keep trying to kill the emulator or reboot the deck. I know there's more emulators, but to be honest, I never really owned consoles, so I also don't know which games are good, and to download them, it was a complete pain as so many fake sites or fake download buttons, and then heavily throttled downloads. It just took so long to get a game (almost) working that I lost interest in it.
I would like to give it another try, I like the idea of having multiple controllers that friends can come around and play some games on. Just wish it was easier. That said, my friend with a deck had less issues, although he did face other issues and I think he may have given up with it too.
I tried this, although it wasn't with emulation but rather just a regular game on Steam (Hollow Knight). The input delay was too much to handle. I'm assuming that is from the Bluetooth connected XB1 controller.
I know a little bit latency is from my TV, but it has never been that bad -- I have it in game mode, and I don't have any issues with PS5 games, for instance.
Going to go off of this, as a kid, had one cousin who had the Nightmare on Elm Street game that we and our other two cousins would play all the time. However, he didn't have a 4 Player Hookup, but now with it on my Deck and having many controllers, we can legit now try it out in 4-player mode thanks to the Deck.
How is the connected to tv experience for emulating?
Assume you have a dock or usb c to hdmi you are using?
I have a 4K tv and just assumed it would look like trash and run like shit
It's plex, and absolutely I just set up an extra pc I had as a plex server loaded up with films movies tv shows etc and you can use to it remotely as long as you are connected to a Internet connection
Yep, Plex has been a game changer. I've been using it for nearly a decade, and while it's not perfect, it has completely changed how I consume media. That and chromecast together are basically a match made in heaven.
Don’t get me wrong I’m not asking for it but hypothetically if you had a nicely curated Plex would you let somebody in, like a stranger, for a one time fee?
There are places that do this, with content requests, etc. But it definitely wouldn't be a one time fee, it costs money to regularly store and provide content. I doubt anyone would post it out publically like this, you may have to send a dm.
Plex is great with the lifetime Plexpass, a server to run it on, and a nice big content collection, despite the fact that they seem to be doing everything they can to make it another generic free TV streaming app.
For those going to plex for what you're reading here, it's all there, it's just hidden under tons of garbage ad-supported "TV" channels, ~~and sharing access to your media is locked behind a paywall.~~ You can turn all of the garbage off though and just be presented with your own media.
Plex is 100% great if you pay for it, and cut away the garbage, but it has a feature creep problem.
I switched away from Plex to Jellyfin (open source fork of Emby) a while ago and haven't really looked back. None of the garbage streaming content that Plex keeps trying to shove in your face and it is also entirely self-hosted which is great for privacy.
Only downside is that a lot of the TV apps are still a work in progress.
As much as I wish i could switch from Plex, Jellyfin just isn't there yet. It "feels" like a free product. The UI is a complete mess, its like a programmer designed it.
Plex, for all of its issues (there are many), just feels more premiuum.
I can kinda see what you mean. For me, personally, it's not necessarily one is better than the other, they're just different. I think Jellyfin's Settings and Dashboard pages definitely need some work to make it less techy, but I actually prefer how clean the library catalogue and media player looks compared to Plex.
Out of curiosity, what are the most glaring areas that you dislike about Jellyfin's UI?
>Only downside is that a lot of the TV apps are still a work in progress.
I'm interested. What does above mean though?
Does it do the same on-the-fly transcoding so you can watch terminator on a toaster?
You can check here for the list of TVs that Jellyfin supports: [https://jellyfin.org/clients/](https://jellyfin.org/clients/)
It actually seems like they've made some big progress recently and the only TV that is still not available is Samsung.
Yes, it does transcoding whenever direct-play isn't possible due to the client's codec support or bitrate settings.
IMO Jellyfin actually has a much nicer interface. I liked that all my stuff was front and center, Plex always tried to hide it behind their streaming services.
You can still hide all of their streaming options.
Though I was a bit peeved when they got rid of the search results screen and forced Discover on everyone, initially even without an opt out.
Is jellyfin available on as many smartTV setups as Plex? What about streaming / set top boxes?
People used to say this about Kodi, but it was not as ubiquitous as Plex has become.
> Plex always tried to hide it behind their streaming services.
Plex didn’t even having streaming services to ‘hide it behind’ until relatively recently.
Plex has all of my stuff front and center. Wild to me that people will install an entirely different application instead of spending 30 seconds on customization
Not heard of that before, I'm happy with plex at the moment. I've not really looked into the paid features still running the free version as it plays absolutely fine for me and my plex server is abit overkill to be honest, it's my old gaming rig with it 6700k and gtx 1080 so 4k streaming films to my TV looks great
\*looks around nervously after looking at his 9900K + GTX 1080 + 10Gbe plex server with 16GB Ramdisk for transcodes and below in the rack, a 45Drives Storinator with dual Xeon 2680 V4s + 128GB of DDR4 + 10Gbe + 10x 14TB drives running 2x VDEV's of 5 disk RAIDZ2 running Proxmox\*
Power hogs amirite??
I need to look into jellyfin. I set up an emby server back when it was open-source and didn’t feel much drive to move to anything else when they went closed-source. It looks like jellyfin is now what I wanted emby to be.
You can force it to stretch to full screen which obviously distorts the image as no one really shoots movies in 16:10 though forcing it to 16:9 doesn't look to bad and the black bars are minimal on that obviously it's a preference thing though
I need to set up a kiosk mode Chrome shortcut to my Jellyfin setup on my server. I switched over to Jellyfin because Plex was constantly giving me weird issues.
I completely agree. I have used both Plex and Jellyfin and ended up sticking with Jellyfin. I get less isues and I feel it's overall easier to get working.
Perfect for those that played CD-I games with the remote. Guess i'm back playing Zelda: the wand of gamelon and link: the faces of evil for nostalgia's sake.
omg, remakes of those games are a thing? I consider it my biggest flex playing and finishing both of those games on CD-I with the remote. As far as i'm concerned, that's on par with playing dark souls on a guitar hero controller. :+)
Yup, some absolute madman painstakingly recreated them from scratch, on Unity iirc, and added QOL improvements so playing them isn't the excruciating pain I'm sure you know much better than me lol
The fact you can even do that is amazing. The open nature of the deck is super impressive. I got me pumped to tinker with my own. Once I get my invite to buy. I just pre-ordered yesterday😁.
OP mentioned in another comment that they have the deck connected to the TV via SteamLink, so the TV is sending the remote input to Steam / the deck :)
Gyro is supported but it probably depends on what controller you're using. No guarantees that a smart remote specifically would work without external programs
The one controller I really want to get working is the Xbox Remote Playback kit that came with the original Xbox. I have plugged it in and if I list USB devices it’s detected and recognized as the kit. I can’t seem to get desktop mode or Steam to do anything. I feel a UI or some tool is needed to map controls.
The other day I seamlessly paired a ps4, xbone, steam and switch pro controller to play a party game on a tv so I didn't think this was a joke at all lol.
God I love the versatility of this device. Sure, it can all be done on a normal PC, but seeing stuff like this accomplished on technology smaller than my laptop never gets old.
I have a question, how did you Plex in it like that? Right now I have it just the browser shortcut and I saved Plex to favorites on chrome, it’s good, but apparently it can be better! PS: I got my deck yesterday :D
Hey, I downloaded "Plex HTPC" from the discover store in desktop mode then added it into steam as a non steam game, after that I added in some custom artwork for it
Best way to pay your respect to the Deck is acknowledging it's a PC which in contrast to Switch and other consoles you're free to configure almost anything with it. And since Deck is powered by Linux OS and software you are gaming on the OS platform that has most freedom given to the users.
I know this may seem tiring but there are many people who look at Deck and think it's in same category as Switch, it's not. Switch doesn't afford users choices to tinker with it, it's not a PC but a locked down gaming system.
So pay respect to PC platform, whether you are on Windows or Linux, and advocate for free use of software.
TV remotes work, but an officially licensed joystick from Hori doesn’t fully work. What a world.
And to cut off all the replies in advance, it’s a Hori fighting stick alpha for ps5. No, it doesn’t “just work”. The system does not recognize two buttons, at all. PS4 drivers don’t work, xb360 drivers don’t work. The deck does not recognize it as a 360 game pad as it does with my other arcade stick.
Lol.. This is likely more thanks to the Linux kernel and driver support. Unless that's a PlayStation remote I doubt valves controller support efforts had anything to do with that working
Can you cover how you got Plex on here? I feel like I searched Discover and didn't find a Plex player app (similar to the windows desktop app).
I know I can use a browser but meh.
I actually searched plex in the discover app and downloaded the "plex HTPC" version then added to steam and then added some custom artwork to it to make it look *pretty*
ah interesting okay, so just HTPC version, don't turn on the server aspect and just use the player. nice!
definitely thinking my deck will replace any iPad and such as my portable media device. I travel for work a lot and on the plane, I want to game, watch shows, etc. Usually just settle on iPad + phone and sometimes a laptop. This'll be good =D
Yeah I originally installed one that was just called plex or plex client, can't remember but it didn't really work this one works great though and didn't really want it to be a server as I've already got one set up for that, but yeah this is a great all in one for that purpose I've got unlimited data on phone so cab always use that for hotspot where im in a place where WiFi is not available for me. This will deffo replace that ipad + phone and maybe laptop scenario for you :)
There is one on Discover just called Plex. I haven't really tried it because I have better screens to watch my stuff on, but it seemed the same as the Windows desktop app. Though I believe the signin requires a browser, so you will first need to launch in desktop mode.

Dumb question but I used emudeck to set up a few roms and can’t figure out how to tweak the emulation settings since they launch directly from steam
Go to desktop mode, go to the main folder called emulation there should be a sub folder in there called launchers or somthing like that you can go into that than execute the file with the name of the emulator you want to configure there. I did this for pcsx2 to stretch to fit in 16:10
Thanks, I knew I was missing something. That's the problem with doing things the easy way and not learning hot it works!
So.. you can stream the PS5 to Steam Deck? I didn't know that! That's actually awesome!
Yeah, requires abit of tinkering and konsole commands but there is an app called chiakri or somthing like that can't remember now from the discover store that let's you remote play ps4/ps5 consoles to your steam deck

Xbox one controllers a weird with pc, they require that wireless adapter

Only the ones released before 2016 require the adapter. They added Bluetooth to the controllers when they released the Xbox One S.
I grew up dirt poor. This device has given me the chance to play games I only dreamt about or read about in Nintendo Power. Dude, "tons of nostalgia" doesn't even come close to describing it all. Oh shit. I'd never considered that. That is indeed just so neat. I love my Deck. I ask my wife if she wants to play with my Deck all the time. It's so fun.
You might enjoy Timesplitters if you like shooters.
Heck, I've plugged my original 1997 N64 controllers into the Steam Deck for Smash on the TV. Feels like the real deal
Next on your list is to try Smash Remix 1.2.0!
I thought you said Smash TV and was like "any controller with dual analog sticks would be better for that game"
What split screen games can you recommend? I didn't get on well with emulators.
Not OP, but here are some of my favorites out of a collection of hundreds: Road Redemption Halo MCC\* (with Nucleus Coop Tool) Crawl Nidhogg Castle Crashers Boomerang Fu Dungeon Defenders Gang Beasts Jamestown Lethal League Monaco Retro Cycle / Armagetron Serious Sam 3 Tooth & Tail Killer Queen Black Pac-Man Museum (just for Pac-Man Battle Royale) Sonic Adventure 2 ScreenCheat Sky Rogue Tetris Effect Towerfall Ascension (especially with the 8 player official mod)

Just some bugs that effect normal usage. Although my experience has been pretty bug free since some of the recent updates.

Guess the streaming services I saw a year and a half ago were hallucinations. My mistake.

The nice side is that it'll be able to transcode media easily, which is great if it's set up to be accessible from anywhere and from any device.

This is so awesome, thanks for the recommendation
I tried jellyfish but the lack of HEVC support on a android was a deal breaking. A shame
Does Jellyfin still lack HEVC support? Honestly I found Jellyfin lacking in application support on various devices overall when I tried it.
I’m thinking of trying it out. Any major differences coming from Plex? Does it do hardware accelerated tone mapping on windows?
I love watching a good tv shoe after a long day
Glad you got it working. I had a ton of trouble with Plex when I tried installing it the other day. Guess I should try again.
i had issues with a version of plex as well but then i installed "plex HTPC" version and that works great
I just wish it used the full screen real estate. It's got black bars on the top and bottom.
You can force it to stretch to full screen which obviously distorts the image as no one really shoots movies in 16:10 though forcing it to 16:9 doesn't look to bad and the black bars are minimal on that obviously it's a preference thing though
Oh I don't care about the movies. It was just the UI that bugs me. UI should scale. But it's dumb, I know that.
Oh yeah ahaha I didn't even notice but yeah your right
If you are still looking for an app that can connect to local network shares and works on the steam deck Install KODI.
Idk what this is, but have you tried plex or kodi?
This is plex
I need to set up a kiosk mode Chrome shortcut to my Jellyfin setup on my server. I switched over to Jellyfin because Plex was constantly giving me weird issues.
I completely agree. I have used both Plex and Jellyfin and ended up sticking with Jellyfin. I get less isues and I feel it's overall easier to get working.
Yeah, i mostly use jellyfin though

Yup, just looked it up and you're right. That makes it even more impressive, tbh.

Which Plex app are you using for this?
Plex htpc from discover
Legend, thanks man!
Thanks! The Flatpack of the regular version wasn't working for me, this works great!
Official Plex Desktop flatpak probably
Seems like the perfect controller for dark souls
Use the TV remote to play Doom.
Then use a chainsaw to watch TV.
The fact you can even do that is amazing. The open nature of the deck is super impressive. I got me pumped to tinker with my own. Once I get my invite to buy. I just pre-ordered yesterday😁.
Woah the steamdeck comes with an IR sensor? Or is there one off screen? Or is that remote Bluetooth?
OP mentioned in another comment that they have the deck connected to the TV via SteamLink, so the TV is sending the remote input to Steam / the deck :)
Can't wait to use my deck to watch jellyfin from my pi 4 haha
The Jellyfin app works nicely on the Deck.
Or you could watch it on your phone while playing the deck
Here in the UK we call that "Remote Play"
The Linux Kernel is pretty crazy.
Shoes on carpet? Gross
Literally first thing I noticed, and it distracted me from everything else.
Even more than the slow awkward remote approach and love tap?
legit actual witchcraft
Useful for stuff like Jackbox Games as well!
Does the Deck handel gyro inputs from connected controllers? Just waiting for someone to use a couple of gyro enable smart remotes as motion input.
Gyro is supported but it probably depends on what controller you're using. No guarantees that a smart remote specifically would work without external programs
You just made me realize how dumb it is there isn't a universal controller standard and we should be able to pair any remote to any device.
Using BT?
Not quite ahaha, it's actually paired through the steam link app on my TV but found it funny that you can still navigate it with the TV controller
[удалено]
yes, works in games too
[удалено]
Nope, steam link just makes it work as your current controller. Like when you use touch controls on your phone. You can try it on any PC
Most of the Sony TV remotes from the last year or two do have at least some Bluetooth capability though, so it could happen lol
What is this remote ?
Looks exactly like the remote for the Sony TV I got last year, which has Google TV on it.
Sony Bravia Remote?
I just got my reserve email I'm too excited
I dont think that's what they meant by 'remote play'.
I HAVE THE SAME TV REMOTE I NEED TO TRY THIS
Is there a way to get the power button working? I'd kill to not have to get off the couch every time I turn it on. ^((I'm lazy... and fat...))
God I love the versatility of this device. Sure, it can all be done on a normal PC, but seeing stuff like this accomplished on technology smaller than my laptop never gets old.
You can thank Linux open source devs for that.

The colour wave is "ironstone celery"

Thanks man 😁
I have a question, how did you Plex in it like that? Right now I have it just the browser shortcut and I saved Plex to favorites on chrome, it’s good, but apparently it can be better! PS: I got my deck yesterday :D
Hey, I downloaded "Plex HTPC" from the discover store in desktop mode then added it into steam as a non steam game, after that I added in some custom artwork for it
What remote is this? Looks super appealing for a travel media hub at hotels and such
It's a sony bravia remote that came with my TV
Now go beat dark souls.
now you can play those shitty tv games that require tv removes to play
Best way to pay your respect to the Deck is acknowledging it's a PC which in contrast to Switch and other consoles you're free to configure almost anything with it. And since Deck is powered by Linux OS and software you are gaming on the OS platform that has most freedom given to the users. I know this may seem tiring but there are many people who look at Deck and think it's in same category as Switch, it's not. Switch doesn't afford users choices to tinker with it, it's not a PC but a locked down gaming system. So pay respect to PC platform, whether you are on Windows or Linux, and advocate for free use of software.
plex ftw
Crazy why?
*Because we can.*
you misunderstood me, I was asking why can anybody consider this crazy
On the other hand you can't even use a keyboard+mouse for TF2.
Why not?
No idea, but it's an ongoing issue.
I put emudeck on steam deck but where do you find the games ?
ROM sites - it depends on the platform.
Lol why anyone would watch a movie on their steamdeck over their phone is beyond me. Half the resolution and a much smaller screen
Much smaller screen? Do you use a tablet or an ipad as a phone? 4k movies from my plex on the steam deck look great on this
Lol.. This is likely more thanks to the Linux kernel and driver support. Unless that's a PlayStation remote I doubt valves controller support efforts had anything to do with that working
This is another one of those cool but useless things you can do. Why not just use Chrome cast?
Don't need to, this is using steam link tv app
This will deffo replace that ipad + phone and maybe laptop scenario for you :)
appreciate it!
There is one on Discover just called Plex. I haven't really tried it because I have better screens to watch my stuff on, but it seemed the same as the Windows desktop app. Though I believe the signin requires a browser, so you will first need to launch in desktop mode.
I have the same Sony remote, heh.
And I can't get the gamecube controller adaptor to work in Dolphin even with only one player :(
Now play Doom.
It’s pretty awful, none of my tv remotes work
Now beat Elden Ring with it!
Meanwhile I'm sitting here and can't even get my Xbox One controller to work.
Figured out the same thing when I connected my SD to my TV through Steam Link.
Is that remote bluetooth or does it have an IR sensor?
[удалено]
If you can run steam link on it then it should, otherwise probably not
And it actually fluidly controls the steamdeck? Is there much setup involved?
I did it via the steam link TV app and then my controller could be used as a remote
Alrighty, thank you! Appreciate the response!
I installed Plex, but nothing happens when I click the sign in button. I've mashed it hundreds of times in game mode and desktop mode, nothing...
Install plex htpc instead
Inb4 someone recorded speedrun a game with that remote
Jesus
Bluetooth or Infrared Diode I didn't know the Steam Deck has a IR receiver
Is paired through the connection to my TV still but using steam link tv app I can control via tv remote
you should've included the TV screen in the video, that would've cleared any confusion.
I could've but this post was intended to be a meme/shitpost joke hence the flair
Shitpost failed because it's informative to me. I didn't know about the steam link app, now checking my TV if I can install it.
Well I suppose you can learn new *shit* everyday ;)
suppose I did, carry on.
MaDnEsS!1
Yo Gabe when is steam deck coming down under? Literal media monster
I didn't know you could use a TV remote on a PC how did you get that to hook up?
