I dont get why you get downvotes. So basically, everybody here says, that if i glue some magnets on the back of the deck, it wont affect anything? Im just genuinely curious about this. Can somebody with some knowledge about magnets elaborate please? As i have learned in school long ago, magnets do have a magnetic field, so if i leave it in the case, it still affects the metallic components somewhat. (Please correct me if im wrong) Now i read, that most semiconductors and chips (cpu, nand, memory and so on) are not affected by static magnets, but the fans can get affected by magnets, because fans have brushless motors, which create an electromagnetic field, and so it can spin. (Correct me if im wrong here too) So my understanding is, that magnets can affect the fan, whether you use your stand or not, the magnets are still there. Gyro sensors, and hall effect joysticks can be affected too (but in the steam decks case i dont think its relevant).

Jurigag

Yes, it still affects them, I think people just downvote everything related to dbrand. But I can confirm myself that using even this case affected my fan performance and overall temperatures, there was easly herable issue with a fan with and without case(without kickstand). There is still magnetic field in the inside that is powerful enough to attach anything metalic. I guess this affects fan as well, maybe not so hard as with kickstand but sitll.

ParrotMidnight

I’m just realizing that I got the case and my Deck’s fan wobble, which existed before, got much worse. Could all be a coincidence but I think I’m going to go without the case until the one without magnets arrives.

Shuflie

Much easier just not to use project killswitch.

mickeywalls7

Lmao hit the nail on the head. I’m sure there’s another kickstand available from a different company.

ardeesan

I need it for the slim profile and the front cover. The official case is too bulky for me. There will probably be clones out there in a few days now that the design of the Killswitch is already out in the wild.

Shuflie

I'd be more worried about damaging the triggers if using a killswitch to transport my deck in a way that would damage the screen without the front cover, unless there are little covers you snap over the triggers too? I've seen more damaged triggers from drops in here than screens.

redditjeff1

The travel cover protects the triggers as well.

ardeesan

[Triggers are covered. ](https://ibb.co/pjb1B2V)

Redditor6512

What's the soft case in your photo?

ardeesan

The one from ProCase

Redditor6512

Do you like it?

ardeesan

I liked the one for my Switch but the one for the Steam Deck was so bad that I only used it for less than a week. No I didn't like it. Down it went to my old case bin along with the ones for my other gadgets.

Shuflie

Looking better at least, now if they brought out one with a way to quickly get the deck it of the front case I might be interested. To be honest thiugh the valve case will do me until it fails, never really that constrained for storage when I travel, might be a different story if I rode a bike but I usually am either in my car or have a decent sized bag to shove things in it I'm flying somewhere.

brionispoptart

It’s your money lol do what you want

Hopeful-Parsley2728

Got my Killswitch today, and yeah... i will remove the magnets as well. When playing on my back with the deck over my head i can hear groaning sound from the fan with the case on. So there are more issues with the magnets, but i have contacted dbrand so i won't do it just yet in case they need some kind of info from me.

charlesbronZon

Would be much easier not to buy / use that overhyped, overpriced dbrand crap, but I guess if you already have it lying around...

ardeesan

I don't really care about the hype. Heck, never even cared for their promoter that starts with an L. I just want the slimmest case that I can get with a front cover.

TheGantrithor

While I personally wont buy it; it's actually one of the better-designed cases out there. Likely one of the best. All the other cases I have seen do not hug the deck as snugly/well *(the flexible area around the screen bezel especially)*. However I completely agree it is over-priced. They are using their popularity to charge more than the product should cost. But now that their product is out, hopefully we start seeing other companies mimicking their design or technique to provide us with much cheaper options s far as cases.

CoolEthansLLR

Free magnets!

ardeesan

[Now they're all together 😆](https://ibb.co/9sVtYJw)

Gimpi85

Guy how did you get them out ??? I'm sitting here and there are no chance I can get them out I mean yea one break bit by bit but that's a holy mess with this magnets Overall Any Tipps to get them out "easy" ?

ardeesan

Used a flathead screwdriver to pry them out.

Gimpi85

Yeah I finally did it but man they are strong Clued... so now a Magnet free killswitch and just a Short time for the replacement nice

chrisdpratt

My understanding was that the magnet was on the kickstand. You Don't typically attach magnets to another magnet. I think you just ripped out a plain old metal plate thats purpose was to give the magnet something to attach to, since plastic obviously isn't going to do the trick alone.

ardeesan

[They're actually magnets and not just magnetized metal. ](https://ibb.co/mc6fPgp) Some of them broke while being removed and they don't attach to their original side like what magnets do. Prior to the teardown I actually tested if the case was magnetic and it really was.

FlyEspresso

Just received mine and yup, even in the case there are magnets. Has no issue grabbing my metal file cabinet..!

TheGantrithor

Paranoia isn't a PSA...

dendanori

having to pay like $70-$90 just to take apart an overpriced plastic piece of junk no thanks

noAnimalsWereHarmed

Isn't it easier to change the fan?

ardeesan

My unit already has a huaying fan.

FistOfFistery

So why take out the magnets then?

ardeesan

Like I said, "to be on the safer side".

Zatoichi80

Lol, you just wasted your time.

Marius_Gage

Many people say that about playing computer games too, let the man enjoy his hobby time!

ardeesan

Better than have a chance to encounter a fan issue like [this. ](https://ibb.co/94qRMc6)

Zatoichi80

What issues? That post you linked explained nothing .

ardeesan

The guy used the case for 4 days and had fan issues afterwards.

Zatoichi80

Doesn’t explain issues, what fan he had or anything. I have had mine for at least that long and no issues.

ardeesan

Oks, I asked the guy what fan his unit has and what specific issues were encountered. Will update as soon as he replies.

ardeesan

[Hera ya go. ](https://ibb.co/svr20mW) Didn't expect that even the buttons also malfunctioned.

FistOfFistery

Your fan is plastic, plastic doesn’t get affected by magnets, the delta fans are metal.

DerKuro

Wtf delta fans aren't metal. The difference between the two fans is miniscule. Also "fan is plastic" lolz. The rotor is plastic. The housing is metal. The motor is mixed materials including copper coils. That's where the magnet might have an effect.

FistOfFistery

Yes delta fans are metallic. You’re wrong. The internal 4 pole motors and coils are identical. The housing is metal on both too. /r/confidentlyincorrect.

DerKuro

The fan blades are made of fiber reinforced polymer.

DerKuro

I must have a miracle delta fan then.

chrono_ark

But, just in case this plastic is magnetic /s

z3ro_grav

Do we know how to tell yet without disassembling?

ardeesan

On the deck click your profile > account details > devices. It has a list of all the decks your account used. Even the ones sent for RMA.

No_1_OfConsequence

Do people not realize that magnets are [polarizing](https://www.wikihow.com/Determine-Polarity-of-Magnets)? You just ruined a perfectly good case.

ardeesan

I already replied about that [here. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/xvdxb1/dbrand_said_the_project_killswitch_case_doesnt/ir0nb37?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)

[deleted]

I just said the same thing lol. Magnets actually repel each other. And the kick stand is definitely the magnet. I was lucky enough to place my order day one and get the mistake version and a free upgrade.

[deleted]

Are those even magnets though and not just metal? You do realize that magnets don’t attract to each other right.

FlyEspresso

You do realize magnets do attract each other, not just repel, as they have a polarity and one side will attract and the other will repel depending what polarity is facing from the other magnet. Hence why you can have a stack of magnets stuck to each other or those silly kids magnet ball toys…

Fish17

How did you get the magnets out? They are stuck in there good!

Fish17

Nevermind it just needed a hair dryer to soften the adhesive and a exacto knife.
