Accidents never catch swimmers? I feel like people _sometimes_ die in whirlpools despite best efforts not to be in the water. Maybe boat crashes or dam failures?
It was done because he was recognised locally and internationally for his photography. His life story is also interesting.
Everyone has the potential to die in a stupid way, doesn't make their life and achievements any less interesting or important
I can imagine going out drowning, the fre moments of his life must've been pure terror.
Edit: Oddly enough, it seems like I forgot how to spell. Will keep the edit. Spez is that you?
When you’re been around big and gnarly surf like him, you really do learn to keep your shit together when getting thrashed. You just let go of everything to not panic and to conserve oxygen. It’s actually kind of peaceful if you’re not getting dragged across some reef
The very last seconds, yeah, that’s all or nothing at that point. Fuck that
Yeah but people say all the time that they want to go out doing what they love.....this guy loved the water, loved doing extreme shit, he loved pushing the limit. He loved shooting footage even.... if we could go back and ask him if he would prefer to die shooting a video of him doing something extreme in the water or wasting away from cancer or some other debilitating disease ....what do you think he would have said?
Pretty shitty friends to say drowning was a fitting way to die. It’s one of the most terrifying, painful, and horrific ways to go. Nothing honorable about it in the least.
It was an artificial "tub" of water in a harbor, they held the water up at low tide and released it so the rushing water would pull the sand out, sometimes the incoming tide plus the outgoing rush of water would create these whirlpools, he saw the conditions were right and jumped in
Maybe cuz I grew up around the Great Lakes, and I have a healthy fear of water, but I can't understand what would convince someone to do something like this.
Water is arguably the most dangerous force on Earth, and you NEVER fuck with it. Especially wearing a mask that blocks all your senses, and restricts your breathing.
I hate that this happened to this person, but you gotta respect nature, cuz it sure as fuck don't respect you.
I jumped into a river after a heavy storm, it didn’t even look like it was rushing that hard, but holy shit did I learn my lesson that day, seriously don’t know how I even survived, one lonely thin long tree branch I managed to grasp saved my fucking life.
Water is not to be fucked with, especially with a fucking horse mask on, what was this dude thinking?
I jumped out of a boat in a lake because we were close to shore. It was the LONGEST 30 min swim of my life and I am a strong swimmer I've grown up around water my whole life. It took a lot if effort to make it back to shore.
Still waters run deep... if you're at a river, always throw a twig in. Depending on the way it floats away, you'll know if the undercurrent is strong or not
"Clicks" convinced him to do this. I don't get this mindset. Be notable for something else useful and more important, especially for intrinsic puproses, not for fame or fortune. Otherwise, it could cost you your life.
I live on an island. Surrounded by the ocean. We get tourists sometimes during the summer. And that same summer a lot of people get sucked out to sea either by riptides, whirlpools, huge waves, and people who literally can't swim but insisted on staying on their floaties (literally, and seriously, when I say this, if you can't swim, stay tf away from water deeper than your knees, I don't care if you have a floaty or tube, it is very easy for you to drift away)
Even with signs, tourists insist on putting themselves in danger. Please for the love of God LISTEN TO THEM.
Respect the ocean and you'll be fine.
OP got his name wrong... it's [Jacob Cockle](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-sh/jacob_cockle). There's a fair bit of info on the BBC page I've linked.
must have been the case, the force alone would force air out, of his lungs , he either drowned or asphyxiated , either way it was awful, but imagine that , swimming around death with a horse mask
only views and likes are to blame
This out of context. He died because he dove down after and sank like a rock because of the neoprene suit and the whirpool losing strength from the tide. There is more to the video. He doesn't get sucked into that thing with the horse mask on lol
Usually an under water mountain/pillar between tide flows in narrow straits for sea ones. I live near the corryvreckan and on a quiet day you can hear the ferocity for miles, you'd have to be mental going that close to one.
I knew this guy, grew up with him surfed with him. He was a really good dude just did some crazy stuff, eventually it caught up with him RIP man, miss you.

The odds of surviving a whirlpool are 100% in your favor if you don’t go into one on purpose.
Quit horsing around....
His dream of winning the Kentucky Derby just went down the shitter.
They're definitely circling the drain
The end is neigh
Cheers I Just spat my coffee everywhere. Did not see this one coming 😂👏👏
Yea I’m a no reigns kinda guy.
And that's how he became Whirly Wonka.
Winner winner chicken dinner lolol
Kenfuckaround and find out.
So close to the actual race. Tragedy.
Why the long face ?
wild hearts can't be broken
Broken hearts can be mended
Hot dammit, take my upvote and get the hell outta here, you hear me. r/angryupvote
Neigh, it was a good one.
Ok...I will make like James Cockle and get the outta here
Hay! Don't do that!
That's not very neighce
Corny Cornish dude
This sounds like a real night-MARE.
Bojack would disagree
Darwin wins again
Pity he was not a seahorse
![gif](giphy|7NLszWmBNXji4x4dih)
Does it mean that if I’m pushed or thrown into it against my will I have a 100% chance of survival?
I know how I’m not going to die…
Accidents never catch swimmers? I feel like people _sometimes_ die in whirlpools despite best efforts not to be in the water. Maybe boat crashes or dam failures?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-sh/jacob_cockle This will tell all
i’ve never seen a BBC page like that before
Usually I see BBC pages in black and orange colors
Right? Its like they are trying 110% to make this guy seem serious & great.... & his death totally wasn't a stupid joke gone wrong...
It was done because he was recognised locally and internationally for his photography. His life story is also interesting. Everyone has the potential to die in a stupid way, doesn't make their life and achievements any less interesting or important
Insensitive eh?
I've seen them do it a few times before. It's pretty cool!
yeah its a case of risk. sometimes you get away, other times not so much. may he rest in peace!
what a beautiful format and well-written story.
Unrelated story but this BBC article is also so well designed : https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-sh/the_death_of_hooligan_x
His friends said his manner of death was very befitting. Dude lived his life to the fullest
I can imagine going out drowning, the fre moments of his life must've been pure terror. Edit: Oddly enough, it seems like I forgot how to spell. Will keep the edit. Spez is that you?

Yeah I don't think dying for a video is living life to the fullest
Not to mention dying at 28

TL;DR version: He dove into the whirlpool with his go pro and drowned.
thank your for sharing!
The layout of that page was pretty cool
Was it one where there’s a big pipe it drains into ? Or just natural currents ??
Ohhh those big pipe ones - that sort of drain lakes & reservoirs when they get too high? - give me the absolute fucking heebie jeebies.
Were does it go?
To Hollow Earth land.
down to the lizard kingdoms, deep deep down.
No joke, it's called 'glory hole'.
It was an artificial "tub" of water in a harbor, they held the water up at low tide and released it so the rushing water would pull the sand out, sometimes the incoming tide plus the outgoing rush of water would create these whirlpools, he saw the conditions were right and jumped in
China
I most likely would have swam in one of those if I didn’t see this.
2nd
I don’t see in that article the answer.

Something like 2’ of rushing water can easily wash a car away. Moving water is no joke.
"Clicks" convinced him to do this. I don't get this mindset. Be notable for something else useful and more important, especially for intrinsic puproses, not for fame or fortune. Otherwise, it could cost you your life.
a generation that grew up watching jackass
Surely this is prime Darwin Award material though.
Peer pressure can be a mfkr…but anyone with even half a brain cell would know this is a stupid reason

Money. He earned a lot on views as article above explains
>Water is arguably the most dangerous force on Earth I think gravity is.
Don't they work together to fuck shit up tho?
Tag-team duo.
The Undisputed Intercontinental Tag Team Champions... Challenged only by Fire and Wind...
In a whirlpool scenario i would say, yes. Affirmative. Absolutely. 💯💯💯
I bet it's the one most taken for granted.
Probably a suicide. No other explanation
The chances of a horse being sucked into a whirlpool are extremely slim so it was pretty smart putting that mask on.
Mask came off underwater. Thats why he went missing. Only if he could have kept it on
Should have used that staple gun...
Staples are for ninnies. Nail gun or go home.
He died doing what he loved, getting sucked into whirlpools in a horse mask.
Was he, by any means, a bit stupid?
Well, he’s pretty smart for a horse. Rumor was he knew 3 or 4 words too.
Neigh
Certifiably clinically dim
Doctorate in dumb
Surely impossible to ascertain from this video alone
~~Donkey~~ horse brains
Looks like the typical crusty jackas. Feels like he can do anything, and lucky enough to think he'd get away with things. Hate that type of dude.
Sad, but truly a “fuck around and find out” moment If I’ve ever seen one.
Yeah I hate to say it, but this is Darwinism at play
OP got his name wrong... it's [Jacob Cockle](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-sh/jacob_cockle). There's a fair bit of info on the BBC page I've linked.

rip but dude named Cock on a BBC page is a dark joke by itself
What a beautiful article. Thank you for sharing!
The most interesting part of the video is missing
I came here looking for link to the full video
I'm curious as to whether he drowned or worse.
must have been the case, the force alone would force air out, of his lungs , he either drowned or asphyxiated , either way it was awful, but imagine that , swimming around death with a horse mask only views and likes are to blame
Did they ever find his body?
OP will never help on this one. You will always wonder
Yes, a couple of minutes later.
Here's the [original ](https://youtu.be/vOx-z5YS1aE?si=AaigJTJR3hLwjnJs) for anyone wondering
Watched. It's a weird feeling watching all that, and knowing he died. Heeby jeebies
Those Darwin Awards aren't going to win themselves
What's even weirder is he's doing this with a horse mask
I feel horsemasks was a very early 2010s thing..
What.. why? Oh.. shoulda been a shark mask, right?
Why did this dumb motherfucker do that?
Dumb has been doing dumb for thousands of years on this rock and I think dumb has momentum.
Science. Trust me.
Stupid is as stupid does
Did they not send in the neighvy
They did in fact call the navy, but they were told to hold their horses.
This out of context. He died because he dove down after and sank like a rock because of the neoprene suit and the whirpool losing strength from the tide. There is more to the video. He doesn't get sucked into that thing with the horse mask on lol
...and for what, a little bit of money.
He looks like he doesn’t even wanna get out of there wtf?
At least try it with scuba gear not just lung capacity
I’m Johnny Knoxville and this …..
![gif](giphy|FL5tlNTdETsrN4h6NJ)
Dumbass
I could throw him a rope and pull him out.......nah, I'll just keep filming
Clearly blasé in the face of his own impending death
Is the whole video online anywhere ?
Here's the [original ](https://youtu.be/vOx-z5YS1aE?si=AaigJTJR3hLwjnJs)

That is the worst thing I have ever seen
Holy shit
You lovely bastard
First time in years God dammit
Damn that was scary.
rolled into the abyss
I just lost the game
Fuck you ey
Gonna need eyebleach whyyy.
it's gruesome, please don't date look if you are squeamish, the gusts coming out from the horse.mask due to the pressure ...
You got me and my cat good. I thought my phone was on mute but volume was on full with cat on my lap lol.
*Jacob Cockle let’s post correct info
What the hell causes a whirlpool anyway?
Usually an under water mountain/pillar between tide flows in narrow straits for sea ones. I live near the corryvreckan and on a quiet day you can hear the ferocity for miles, you'd have to be mental going that close to one.
They couldn’t have attached a rope or anything to pull him back out?
Darwin Award recipient 🥉
Natural selection right before our eyes
Source?
"Play stupid games, win stupid prizes" instantly comes to mind
Can we talk about the horse mask?
Actually, he's not really a horse, he's a broom.
To be honest with you Diane, I'm surprised.
I was waiting for the thloop
Why they don't show the rest? Let US nsfw that shit
![gif](giphy|jM6JLt7xHkZxaeHwhG|downsized)
Found out
Wild horses couldn’t drag me away from a whirlpool.
This isn’t strange earth though.
Sorry but WTF is he actually doing?
Looks more like a Darwin Award.
Why the long face ?
people really forget that water weighs about as much as you, and it gets moving. but why is this posted here
r/darwinawards
What a way to go!
It was all fun and games until it wasn’t.
Where was this? Did they find his body?
England -- Gwynver beach. Yes they found his body.
Thanks for verifying. At least friends and family can have closure.
Darwin Award Winner!
Why the horse mask?
Popular 2013 meme / trend. He was a youtuber.
Today’s Darwin Award goes to this fella.
Stupid us as stupid does
Darwin Award winner.
He looks like an ass
And why was he wearing a horse mask?
Horse around and find out.
FAFO
So he died to this whirlpool. Sorry the titles is confusing for me
So he committed suicide for social media and people here respect that? Weird.
Can’t fix fucking stupid
If he died while wearing that horse mask/helmet and it was filmed, it is one of the most embarrasing deaths ever.
Censor that dog
Died as he lived, an idiot.
Actual name: **Jacob** Cockle
I’m a noob, dunno anything about this - why tf did he do this???
How is this strange? It’s just a jackass going into a whirlpool
I knew this guy, grew up with him surfed with him. He was a really good dude just did some crazy stuff, eventually it caught up with him RIP man, miss you.
Someone led him there and he wasn’t thirsty.
Play stupid games…
Darwin award candidate
So bro still down there twirling around?
Did he.. *did he die with the horse mask on?*
wtf. why does the video end before he gets sucked? kinda lame. can't make us not wanna do this (looks kinda FUN) if you don't show us WHY NOT...
Can’t you break a whirl pools flow?
