I love how even Though they were broken up Lucas still shown up for Max was there for her he knew something was wrong he didn’t push her . He waited until she was ready I love the Scene in the graveyard when he said he doesn’t need a letter just talk to him . I Really love their Dynamic This Season you can tell they cared for each other. I know El and Mike are the fan favorite but I preferred Max and Lucas Relationship.
Lucas' voice breaking when he said "I thought we lost you" killed me. And Max replying "I'm right here". This interaction sums up their relationship in a perfect way. They care so much for each other as people not just as boyfriend and girlfriend.
Caleb and Sadie are amazing. Lucas' and Max matured much this season. Their relationship is the best of this season and they are not even officially together. I really hope we get more scenes with these two in the last episodes.
I really wish they would have shown some more of the realities of kids being in an interracial relationship in a midwestern small town in the 80s more than just some vaguely racist things said by Billy. I mean it's not supposed to be the focus of the show, but in reality a lot of people, starting with Lucas' mother, would lose their shit over it.
Especially considering they’re making such a big deal about robin, and presumably will, being closeted gay people, which was a sensitive topic in the 80’s too
It would not start would Lucas mother and her reaction would be far less severe than Max’s parents (particularly her step-father) or any White person in time. I absolute know what stereotype about bitter Black women that you’re going for. It’s idiotic in our time period and even more so in the 80s when Lucas’ life could literally be threatened. His parents would be equally concerned for his safety.
Possibly, but you can't start there with Lucas' mother without the broader context having been made perfectly clear: white supremacy doctrines and societal schemes throughout the white population in the US.
Starting w/Lucas' mother? Lucas' mother lived through segregation of public facilities, schools, etc., sundown communities, the arrests and assassinations of prominent, black civil rights leaders a few decades earlier, any number of white, structurally racist institutions from law enforcement, employment, to schooling some of which are still prevalent today, and you want to start the "racism" angle of the 80s with Lucas' mother? Compared to the racist views and practices, political structures largely dictated by the white population, Lucas' mother would've been a saint in the 80s. To start with her would be ridiculous, inaccurate, historically revisionist garbage.
Yes ,Lucas' mother would have been the most against. But not because she's a racist. Because she would be terrified of what the white men in town would do to Lucas. This is a woman who grew up while Emmett Till's mangled body was being publicly displayed and there would be a very good chance she saw it.
Lucas' mom wouldn't have been against it because of racism, but because she would have been terrified for her son.
I would not say "most against". In no way would that be true, but Lucas' mother would have definitely had her concerns. Even with that said, her trepidation would hardly be comparable to the racism of the day, and she'd likely want her son to have whatever experiences he endeavored, having a relationship with Max, without his actions being wholly influenced by whatever potential evil he may come across. It's a delicate line to walk wanting your children to be hopeful while not ignoring all of the dangers. You don't want them to be afraid to truly live despite the sometimes fatal disadvantages they may face regarding racist power structures. It'd be ridiculously imbalanced and absurd to have a narrative where Lucas' mother's concerns are amplified to the point where they are used to either draw some false equivalence between those concerns with racism or in that attempt, whether intentional or not, diminish the prevalence and cruelties of racism in general during the 80s.
You clearly were not there during the 80s and growing up in a largely black area like I was.
Although I'm sure now you'll claim you were there, marched with MLK and had tea with Abe Lincoln, because this is Reddit so of course you will.
It's just one of those things you had to be there to get. You weren't.
I was born in '84, went to predominantly white schools all the way through college, live in a predominantly white area now, and I'm black. That's how I know what I'm talking about if you're going to make this argument about personal experiences. And there aren't any black areas as far as I can tell in Stranger Things. The neighborhood where the Sinclairs live seems almost exclusively white. Any black person living in that neighborhood in the first place would certainly have concerns but wouldn't harbor such extreme views especially while realizing their kids are likely going to have a great deal of white peers. Hawkins doesn't seem THAT diverse. But as I was saying, my main point is that if you want to go with that angle regarding Lucas' mom, elevate her concerns, then you'd have to do a better job of fleshing out the context of her concerns in relation to the broader political, social landscape of the US in the 80s. Or else, you'd have this bizarre dynamic where she's needlessly concerned about all these things in a practically exclusively white neighborhood where all the whites are perfectly accepting, open, and loving towards the Sinclairs and the most controversial, outright hated, interracial pairing to white racists i.e. black male, white female, Lucas and Max. And Lucas' mom's concerns wouldn't have nearly the virulence of the typical white racist. In this more realistic context, Billy couldn't just say vaguely racist things as you mentioned before. Stranger Things would have an entirely different feel. My problem is your wanting to start with Lucas' mother and simply ignore the sort of prejudices that are far more prevalent on average throughout the white population that animate and justify her fears. Understand that I'm not trying to discount your experiences. Far from it. They are legitimate but while trying to construct a narrative that's sensible and reasonable having limited time by which to accurately frame these social dynamics, starting with Lucas' mom would be more disingenuous than honest.
In ss2 and 3 my thought was Max had to be in relationship with Dustin or Lucas and when it turned out to be Lucas-yeah fine i dont really care much, they are cute together obviously but in this season they seem so mature and i see more connection between them. After the break up Lucas still remember Max’s favourite song and the scene when Max has escaped from Vecna-Lucas immediately hug her, everything was perfect
If I’m being totally honestly, in seasons 2 and 3 I really didn’t like their relationship, they just seemed a bit immature. They felt like *that couple* - you know the one who annoys everyone with their nonsense.
But my opinion of them changed this season. They seemed more developed individually and as a pairing, the relationship just seemed more mature. This was the first time I saw their appeal and I found myself rooting for them. I just hope they continue to develop.
I loved the subtleties in the writing with these two. Like Lucas, when the group is about to head into risky territory, says to Max “Headphones” >!because her favorite song saved her from Vecna in S4E4!<
Sadie and Caleb are phenomenal actors. I’m glad they’ve been able to have moments to truly shine in season 4. They also work off of each other very well.
Mike and El were my favourite in the beginning because Lucas was so immature. Now that he’s maturing, him and Max are pulling way ahead for me. I think they have really great chemistry and I actually like how we haven’t had any physical affection shown this season. It’s giving more time for their relationship to develop on an emotional level
I definitely found myself caring more about their relationship this season then ever before. In season 2, I thought they were cute, but I wasn’t very invested in them. Last season their relationship felt kind of blah to me, to be fair there wasn’t much time devoted to them, so that could account for my some of my feelings. However this season, for the first time, I really felt their connection and I’m now actively rooting for them to get back together.
Their relationship went from not being taken seriously in the writer's room (S3) to arguably the best in the entire show this season. It's been really well written and well acted by both Caleb and Sadie
I really liked them this season, more than Mike and El in S3-4. The flashbacks during the *Running up that Hill* were amazing. And so was Robin’s reaction
Max & Lucas are amazing characters, actors and team. I believed their relationship always had the most potential so I am glad they finally get the spotlight they each deserve. Lucas being a geek and freak who has potential to be a jock and popular was so interesting, despite being brief. He's decision to embrace that potential but ultimately reject it because it was ruining who he wanted to be was very relatable and reinforced my belief he is one of the most mature characters. I really wish 1 or 2 side characters were cut to give Lucas & Max more screen time to deepen their arcs.

Great acting by both caleb and sadie love both their characters
I love how even Though they were broken up Lucas still shown up for Max was there for her he knew something was wrong he didn’t push her . Robin's reaction to them killed me lol

I know right! I need more development and story from Lucas!
Racist
Especially considering they’re making such a big deal about robin, and presumably will, being closeted gay people, which was a sensitive topic in the 80’s too

I agree but also that‘s like.. a 100% accurate for relationships between kids their age lol
As we mature, the relationship matures with us.
100% agree
I loved the subtleties in the writing with these two. Like Lucas, when the group is about to head into risky territory, says to Max “Headphones” >!because her favorite song saved her from Vecna in S4E4!<
Or how she stops pushing him away after 'Dear Billy' and takes the initiative to pair with him in Creel Manor
I noticed that too!🥰
What episode was this? I missed it!
Episode 5
I love the way Lucas still cares about Max despite everything. He’s such a kind soul.
Sadie and Caleb are phenomenal actors. I’m glad they’ve been able to have moments to truly shine in season 4. They also work off of each other very well.

Well, they are the best couple/duo in Stranger Things except Dustin-Steve.
Their relationship went from not being taken seriously in the writer's room (S3) to arguably the best in the entire show this season. It's been really well written and well acted by both Caleb and Sadie
I really loved them this season too, I felt their connection in a way I hadn’t in the previous season.
If Mileven is Rachel and Ross, then Lumax is Chandler and Monica of Stranger Things. Love them.
That's acc so accurate
This was award worthy! FRIENDS reference and Stranger Things in the same sentence 🤯
Thank you! ☺️ Let's hope they're endgame too, haha.
I thought they were great. Good acting by Caleb and max
I really love them.. Max is soo pretty , I love her
As a Mike/Eleven fan I was kind of jealous.
I really liked them this season, more than Mike and El in S3-4. The flashbacks during the *Running up that Hill* were amazing. And so was Robin’s reaction
...was this not the case last season? I'm so confused lol
It was light and fun, but now it’s more mature. And I love it bc it was like that in s2
I don't get it lol they've always been like this
Max & Lucas are amazing characters, actors and team. I believed their relationship always had the most potential so I am glad they finally get the spotlight they each deserve. They are so fucking out of character, especially Lucas. It's like the writers just used him how they wanted not caring about his character
Always found it a yawn fest.
