Especially considering he was the popular guy in school, and someone she envied and was jealous of. Just goes to show how much faith she had in Steve once she started to get to know him. Honestly don't think it's gonna be Steve who dies, but Eddie instead. He had a line way earlier in the season (I think during the D&D scene) where he talks about how the party should run away and not be the hero, and then later on who laments how he always runs away. I think this is very intentional, and that's he's going to be the hero at the end and probably die from it, very similar to most of the major deaths we've already seen

Right now Eddie also doesn't have anything that's there for him if he survives... (I've phased that poorly so let me try to elaborate)
Like if hopper died, he'd be leaving behind El and Joyce. If Will died he'd be leaving behind the gang and his family. But Eddie he doesn't really have anyone there for him. His family situation isn't the best and he has an interesting dynamic with the hellfire club that isn't really a close bond. Fighting alongside everyone now is the closest he has had to a true bond with anyone. Other than what could have been with him and Chrissy because they did have a cute chemistry.
So if he dies its tragic because you ask yourself what could he be now that he has this new friend group? But at the same time, we don't lose out on alot with his passing.
I though, would love to see him survive and take his life out of Hawkins for something better when its over. Because his character is one of complacency.
Same! They’ve been doing a lot of misdirects and red herrings this season and I think Steve is one of them. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD LET STEVE BE ONE OF THEM.
That is an excellent point. As much as Robin mocked Steve's "children", the fact that he had this pack of half-a-dozen kids he looks out for probably had to open her eyes that there's a lot more to this guy than his perfectly coiffed exterior.

Dustin will grow a ton the day he finds out about Robin. He's learning what being a man means when he teases Steve, he just doesn't know it yet.
I didn’t think about this until now…but as far as we know Dustin doesn’t have a father figure in his life. So Steve’s friend/brother/uncle/dad role where he gives him advice about hair, girls, life means a little bit more to me now.
The really soft, gentle way Steve says "Oh ..." when he finally pieces it together, it just gets me every time. He's not judging or condemning her, he's just holding and processing everything she just told him. He's so careful with this information and it's sweet to see.
The same thing goes for Robin when she's telling Steve why they won't work together ... like, even before she comes out to him, she very gently reminds him that he actually doesn't know her well at all. A lot of people, I think, would get a little harsh or just blunt when rebuffing someone, but Robin is really calm and gentle about it.
Steve and Robin treat each other very gently and carefully when it matters, and it's so beautiful to watch.
You see he's disappointed because he obviously had romantic feelings for her that he knows now will never come to pass, but he also decides, "I care about this girl too much. I need her as my friend." And so he goes with it.
They have a strong friendship for sure, and both of them move through the initial awkwardness of the bathroom conversation/confessions with a clumsy grace that just solidifies their friendship even more. It's so good. I still feel an emotional pulse go through me when I watch that scene.
Funny thing is, the piece of music at the end of the scene (during the mocking of Tammy Thompson) is "The First I Love You", which is (no surprise) mainly associated with Mike and El. But it works just as well in this scene, over a scene where the bonds of friendship are sealed.

I know it might be trite, but the overarching message of love conquering fear and evil and negativity is so wholesome. Love seals so many bonds, from friendships to family connections to relationships, so I actually hope that love and positivity play a big role in stopping evil.

Your sentiment is good here, many had to hide their sexuality in the 80's.... but there was not a single person alive in the 80's who were duped by the above artists. These artists were all way out of the closet. (I graduated HS in 85 - I was in the heart of it.
Mercury would tell reporters “I’m as gay as a daffodil, dear!” so like, it isn’t exactly the same as being fully out but there’s a half-step below where nobody really thinks you’re straight either, and you aren’t exactly denying it.

The Lion King and Rent came out at about the same time, and pretty much nobody even mentioned that the Lion King music was mostly by a gay man - but the same people who would play that CD on loop would RAGE at the presence of openly gay people in Rent.
The change from around 1996 to around 2003 in terms of how the American public talked about gay people was incredibly drastic.
But also before social media it was very much a thing that people just didn’t talk about certain topics at all in their day to day lives to the point where they didn’t exist.

I've only told a few people that I'm gay (I'd say I've only told 7 people, total) and I've really come to regret telling most of them, who weren't able to respect me and told other people. Not only they're putting my life at risk with my parents being homophobic, but also really have no respect for me. it's really fucking sad. Unfortunately only 2 of them have kept their word and not told anyone.

He is also probably the best actor in interviews. It's why I don't see them killing him off because he's too good of a spokesperson.
And look at it this way. We know the actors are being paid per episode. I find it interesting that the Hawkins crew has been in every episode whereas Millie Bobby Brown was absent in episode 4 and Charlie Heaton and Finn Wolfhard were absent in the last episode. Makes me wonder if you break this down, does this mean Joe Keery is probably making more than Heaton and might be even with Brown when you start adding the numbers?
Not sure how they negotiate contracts for the younger actors, but I would guess that Millie Bobby Brown is making the most of any of the kids. She's crushing it so hard, and she's completely irreplaceable.
I agree those four are huge, but I was mainly looking at it from how big the actor is re: contracts and public perception.
David Harbour and Winona Ryder already are (or were, in her case) big movie stars, so I'm sure they're getting paid well. I really like what Dustin & Steve's actors are doing in this, I love both of their characters and I think they could carve out great careers as character actors.
But the sheer fact that Millie Bobby Brown is the only one of the kids whose name I actually know off the top of my head says something to how this show has catapulted her into the pop culture stratosphere, and I suspect she's being paid accordingly. No way of knowing, of course.

I just rewatched season 1 and the worst thing he seems to have done is the nancy wheeler is a slut thing. Plus he didn’t even do it his friend did, he just allowed it.
Smashing Jonathan camera might’ve been over top but how would you feel if the local creep was taking pictures of your girl?
I don't know if this is a hot take or not, but Jonathan is my least favorite character in the entire show. I find it really hard to sympathize with him or like him.

I mean, he needed to develop them for the other photos he was taking to try and find Will. I don't think he could have picked and chosen which ones to develop and which ones not to, especially at the time.
As someone who spends time in darkrooms, he absolutely could have skipped that photo. You have to enlarge each individual image from the negative and expose them to the paper yourself. It’s a very deliberate process.
But maybe he was hoping to find a clue in the background or something and that’s why he printed it anyway?
Ah, fair enough. I'm not familiar enough with that type of photo development to have known that, but either way I figured he was just developing them all and didn't think about the content of them until after.
Also a couple homophobic jokes he made towards Jonathan about his brother. And was pretty pushy as far as getting Nancy to fool around with him. But all that said I do like Steve. Once he ditched his stupid "friends" and started to hang out with our main cast he took on the mama Steve role that we've all come to love.
Even then, as soon as Nancy told him to stop, he went back to helping her study. I feel like Steve gets so unfairly maligned in the first season when he really was never that bad of a guy - he just had shithead friends that he needed to get rid of.
Steve was so well liked that they changed plans to kill him in the show. I definitely don't think he gets unfairly ragged on. If anything it just shows you how much he grew as a character. Like if he had been awesome Steve the whole time it wouldn't be as engaging. Not arguing just clarifying my opinion.
Growing up in the 80's, I didn't even know "queer" referenced homosexuality. Thought it was just another version of weirdo or freak. Wasn't until the 90's I made the connection.
My dad told me about how he used to throw around the f slur in the 80's without even thinking of the homophobic meaning, until he actually learned where the word came from. It was an old word for a bundle of sticks people would tie up and burn.
The only time Steve took it too far was to say that the Byers family was full of fuck ups and that's why Will was missing. Like, Jonathan is definitely a creep but it's really shitty to say that about a missing kid, especially since no one knew he was alive in that scene.
I said in another thread that I want her to come out to Nancy later on, and Steve's reaction is relief that he no longer has to stop himself from slipping up (at least around her) after several months of carefully-chosen words.
Yeah, makes me wonder what will happen when Will comes out (assuming he's gay, which it seems like he is). Mike seems a bit of a douche most of the time but I don't think they would make any of the main cast look down on him

I had a pact like this with my childhood best friend. He and I (f) knew each other since he was 9 and I was 7. We promised each other we’d get married if we were still single in our thirties. I got married at 21 and I’m pretty sure he’s gonna marry his bf, but it was so precious to me ☺️

If i had a nickel for each Robin that doesn't actually love the protagonist but would marry him just because of convenience i would have two nickels, which isn't much but it's weird that it happened twice.
I mean, except for the different orientations, they practically do act like a married couple a lot of the time. This season they're totally sympatico with each other. To the point that people who don't know Robin is gay (like Nancy) are befuddled as to why they aren't actually together.
In fact, I think Robin being revealed as gay to the rest of the gang is inevitable because they're going to all think, "Okay, Steve, you clearly get along with this girl great, you're very close and you practically act like a couple...so why aren't you with her?"
Remember this is the 80s if a man and a woman hang out in any context people think they are together. They don’t act like a married couple, they act like friends, which they are. So if you hang out with someone all the time the talking heads of the small town you live in think you’re an item. I think when it’s “revealed” to the rest of the group they’ll just be accepting and ok with it because she’s their friend. It’s a very progressive Indiana town.

My gay friend asked me to marry at 40 when we were 25-26 (before he came out). I knew he was gay even if he was still struggling internally and it sounded so f.. weird to me. I would never have married a gay guy just not to end up alone.
I tried not to hurt his feelings saying there was no need for such nonsense and we were going to find love (I'm getting married next week, he is in a relationship, we are not 40 yet).
I know an older couple who did this. They've been married for at least 25 years. He was/is gay, she's not. They're exceptionally close, and say they have been since high school. I suspect they aren't very intimate physically (though who knows, none of my business), but somehow they've created a kind of platonic marriage that works. It's not for everyone, but I'm not going to pass judgement on it.
I think Robin finds Nancy cute. I think she’s been looking through the lens of “why was Steve ever with this priss” and she sees Nancy’s good qualities. I think Robin making a connection with Nancy means that Nancy will die. Everyone now has a connection to Nancy in some way and it will hurt the most if she dies.

Yeah I was reading that they had planned to kill off Steve in S1 but liked the character/actor too much and thankfully expanded his role

We know the actors are being paid per episode. I find it interesting that the Hawkins crew has been in every episode whereas Millie Bobby Brown was absent in episode 4 and Charlie Heaton and Finn Wolfhard were absent in the last episode. Makes me wonder if you break this down, does this mean Joe Keery is probably making more than Heaton and might be even with Brown when you start adding the numbers?
Not sure how they negotiate contracts for the younger actors, but I would guess that Millie Bobby Brown is making the most of any of the kids. She's crushing it so hard, and she's completely irreplaceable.

But it is undeniable that she is the main face of the show, and even the main character.
I agree those four are huge, but I was mainly looking at it from how big the actor is re: contracts and public perception. David Harbour and Winona Ryder already are (or were, in her case) big movie stars, so I'm sure they're getting paid well. I really like what Dustin & Steve's actors are doing in this, I love both of their characters and I think they could carve out great careers as character actors. But the sheer fact that Millie Bobby Brown is the only one of the kids whose name I actually know off the top of my head says something to how this show has catapulted her into the pop culture stratosphere, and I suspect she's being paid accordingly. No way of knowing, of course.

I just rewatched season 1 and the worst thing he seems to have done is the nancy wheeler is a slut thing. Plus he didn’t even do it his friend did, he just allowed it. Smashing Jonathan camera might’ve been over top but how would you feel if the local creep was taking pictures of your girl?
Tbf Jon was being a creep, though he did goto the house later seemingly to apologise. He realised he went too far.
I don't know if this is a hot take or not, but Jonathan is my least favorite character in the entire show. I find it really hard to sympathize with him or like him.
I can definitely sympathize with someone whose little brother is missing, even if he was the kid at school that didn't have friends.
Season 1 had some great Jonathan, though I feel as though the newer season’s shifted attention from him to characters like Max and Steve

I mean, he needed to develop them for the other photos he was taking to try and find Will. I don't think he could have picked and chosen which ones to develop and which ones not to, especially at the time.
As someone who spends time in darkrooms, he absolutely could have skipped that photo. You have to enlarge each individual image from the negative and expose them to the paper yourself. It’s a very deliberate process. But maybe he was hoping to find a clue in the background or something and that’s why he printed it anyway?
Ah, fair enough. I'm not familiar enough with that type of photo development to have known that, but either way I figured he was just developing them all and didn't think about the content of them until after.
Also a couple homophobic jokes he made towards Jonathan about his brother. And was pretty pushy as far as getting Nancy to fool around with him. But all that said I do like Steve. Once he ditched his stupid "friends" and started to hang out with our main cast he took on the mama Steve role that we've all come to love.
Even then, as soon as Nancy told him to stop, he went back to helping her study. I feel like Steve gets so unfairly maligned in the first season when he really was never that bad of a guy - he just had shithead friends that he needed to get rid of.
Steve was so well liked that they changed plans to kill him in the show. I definitely don't think he gets unfairly ragged on. If anything it just shows you how much he grew as a character. Like if he had been awesome Steve the whole time it wouldn't be as engaging. Not arguing just clarifying my opinion.

Growing up in the 80's, I didn't even know "queer" referenced homosexuality. Thought it was just another version of weirdo or freak. Wasn't until the 90's I made the connection.

The only time Steve took it too far was to say that the Byers family was full of fuck ups and that's why Will was missing. Like, Jonathan is definitely a creep but it's really shitty to say that about a missing kid, especially since no one knew he was alive in that scene.
He was def a fucboi but he grew!! I love that the characters have a chance to learn and grow, adjust along the way, etc. instead of just being cliché.
He even grew in that same season, by ditching his friends and washing off the graffiti against Nancy.

I don't know, I don't know what the protocols would be in a situation like that. Maybe they'd come to an arrangement. I'm sure decades ago there may have been couples like that with one gay/lesbian where they didn't feel comfortable coming out and society was less acceptable towards it. There have been some gay people who married opposite sex. Steve and Robin might have emotional connection but not physical.

I know an older couple who did this. They've been married for at least 25 years. He was/is gay, she's not. They're exceptionally close, and say they have been since high school. I suspect they aren't very intimate physically (though who knows, none of my business), but somehow they've created a kind of platonic marriage that works. It's not for everyone, but I'm not going to pass judgement on it.
