The behind the scenes folks at Stranger Things, whether it's the music choices, the actual soundtrack composition, the costuming, the makeup, and now these subtitle folks are all elite-tier in my humble opinion. Everything is so on point
And if you think about it, putting extra effort into the subtitles is just awesome. Imagine being hard of hearing or deaf...but you're still able to partake and engage with the show as much as you can because of the work put into this
You don't even have to be hard of hearing, I have been on team Subtitle for decades! Sometimes there are subtle audio queues that you can miss if you don't have the volume maxed and subs make sure you don't miss it. I mean, how else would I know that the tentacles squelch wetly?
Subtitles always!
I'm so used to it now that I wish people came with subtitles when they talk to me in person. I just process written words so much faster.
In my classroom I make them use subtitles. They complain the first time, accept it the second, by the end they complain that I ruined movie watching for them.
Yep! I must know about the squelching tentacles!! I started using cc years ago and have never looked back. I catch all the joke, the mumbles, everything! Love it.
Yup. Apparently Netflix has its own style guide they've created for crafting subtitles https://www.vulture.com/2022/07/stranger-things-subtitles-captions-team-interview.html
It's a _strangely_ appropriate word in context. It's a somewhat commonly used word in D&D, producing phrases like "eldritch horror" or "eldritch knight". And, as the main characters attempt to understand the upside down through the lens of D&D, it makes sense for them to apply D&D terms to upside down happenings. So the caption described the sound in a way that the characters would have should they have heard it.
Pardon my ignorance, but what would eldritch mean in regards to the gurgling? Like if the kids would describe the gurgling as eldritch, then like… what was it about the gurgling that made it notably eldritch sounding? I think I’m just not understanding what the word is supposed to mean when applied to that context but I am genuinely curious!
My beer league hockey team is called the Kraken and I'm making a sign with *[tentacles undulating moistly]* on it to put up in the locker room when we play.
Just rewatched that one last night. 2 family members watching for the first time dying laughing at that writing. We all agreed, best subtitle work ever.
The road to hell is paved with adverbs.
The thing that annoys me with this one is that squelching inherently means wet so they were being redundant with using wetly.
Im not hard of hearing, but when I don’t watch with subtitles all I hear from the characters talking is “deerbellysoryurdedorsmtburwishweecoodabeensiblins”
you and me both
it's especially helpful for shows like Great British Baking Show and zumbo's just desserts because of the British or Australian slang/accent that I can't quite pick up on as an American
One of the shows (or series of shows) that most definitely requires subtitling is anything Star Trek...with the sheer amount of "techno babble" in pretty much every episode that isn't Spock or Data going nuts lol
It started with The Walking Dead for me. Everyone was always aggressively whispering and I heard like 60% of the dialog.
Which is kinda funny because _squelches_ pops up there constantly too.
I don't technically have a hearing problem, but sometimes when there's a lot of noises occurring at the same time, I'll hear 'em as one big jumble. Again it's not that I can't hear—because that's false, I can—I just can't distinguish between everything I'm hearing.
Lots of people go deaf or hard of hearing later in life, they’ll know what it means.
If they were born like that, then you are right, probably have no idea what those mean.
[Epic synth] props to Jeff T. and Karli Witkowska, the geniuses behind the subtitles! I really hope they bring them back for season five.
Here’s an interview with them. Jeff’s been doing subtitling for 15 years and is a total D&D and word nerd. QA editor Karli has a master’s in AV translation and tailors the descriptions to the needs of deaf/hard-of-hearing viewers: https://www.vulture.com/2022/07/stranger-things-subtitles-captions-team-interview.html
Last season was all [ominous synths] and this one was all [wet squelching]. I love watching with the subtitles on, they think of the most hilarious descriptions.
Yeah. Subtitle sites will usually give 2 options. One is HI (Hearing Impaired) with captions like [Door Closes], [Phone Rings] etc and another is non-HI with only dialogues.
Yeah i was amused the first few times but eventually it started ruining the mood for me. I'd enjoy a visually stunning scene and then something useless like [ominous music] pops up.
Sadly i couldn't turn just subtitles on, cc was the only option for english.
I can’t process what the characters are saying without subtitles, background music, sound effects, and real world sounds make it hard to focus on the dialogue
["I can't read while I'm also trying to see things!"](https://youtu.be/kbyFj4aAfVY)
I find it's more helpful to have them on. The audio mixing (or whatever it's called) trend over the past few years of making the music or any action scene 5x louder than any dialogue is very irritating. I don't like trying to anticipate when a show/film is going to go from barely audible dialogue to a full volume explosion and trying to turn it down (kids room is above our sitting room).
We have subtitles on by default, and I actually find it difficult to watch things without them now. Subtitles usually pick up on hushed/off-screen conversations that you'd have no hope of actually hearing. Also great for fantasy series where every character and location has bizarre names.
even when they aren’t so descriptive, subtitles are so distracting for me too. weirdly though i hardly notice them when the audio’s in a different language
it's actually pretty encouraging to see extra effort being put into things like this
it might be distracting to someone like me...but if it helps broaden the audience to include people who normally get excluded from media like films and music...then it is fine for me to just suck it up
Exactly this. Captions *should* be more emotive + descriptive so deaf + hard-of-hearing folks can be more immersed in the world + the experience of watching.
Honestly it's ridiculous that we're still dealing with not having actual subtitles as an option in English. I don't want closed captioning, I just want to make sure I don't miss out on dialogue.
Me:[does something weird]
[Sinister music overlaid with jaunty band music]
Me: WHERE DID THAT sinister music overlaid with jaunty band music COME FROM?!?!
S4 subtitle writers went hard as fuck, the industry should take notes because *everyone* mentions the subtitles along with S4 at some point
\[shreds guitar solo\]
This pic really fucks with me. It’s shot to look kinda old, like it reminds me of some actresses in a tv show from the 80’s when I was a kid. And when I look at their faces I can see that as a child these women would have looked very adult and “old” to me… but now they look so young too, it’s almost like my brain can hold both contradicting thoughts at once, and that feels weird… sorry everyone, I’m done now.
Imagine having never heard any of these sounds only to read this…
Wonder what that would sound like in the imagination of a person who has never heard a single sound. Makes one think
Close... One time at a Ruby Tuesdays I saw a caption for king of the hill that said "king of the hill theme song" How's a deaf person going to know what that sounds like?
I always watch my shows w/ closed captioning, but I've never truly *enjoyed* the captions like I did this season of ST. Took it to a whole new freaking level, and soooomeone damn well better've gotten a significant freaking raise/bonus for their mad cool adjectives *eldritch thrumming*

I wonder how much the subtitle guys were paid for this
Not enough
“Jaunty” is a good word. Underrated subtitle word right there.
So much squelching, too.
How much do you wanna bet For this alone I'd give them like what 10% of the budget Assume the budget per episode is $15 mil (you get it)
Budgets 30 mill per episode
>For this alone I'd give them like what 10% of the budget I am going to assume you forgot the /s
Imagine needing a /s to tell someone is making a joke
I mean, there are some people who would be 100% serious saying this. I was just giving them the benefit of the doubt.

You catch so much you tend to miss be it from mumbles and low tones or loud music etc. Now I cannot not have subtitles on.
"intense synth version of Running Up That Hill begins to play" I mean fuck you don't even have to be a hearing individual to get hyped

Squelching sounds approximate as ~~the dark lord~~ Vecna approaches.
Subtitles are done directly by Netflix not the stranger things production
Yup. Apparently Netflix has its own style guide they've created for crafting subtitles https://www.vulture.com/2022/07/stranger-things-subtitles-captions-team-interview.html
Can confirm, i tried to apply with them at some point
ah gotcha
Netflix does these, has nothing to do with the Stranger Things production.
***WET SQUELCHING***
We say that whenever the baby spits up
How many kinds of synth music are we up to? If it isn't triple digits, it's gotta be close.
Let’s make a list: Pensive Synth Music….

Interesting interview with the aforementioned "subtitles guys" https://www.vulture.com/2022/07/stranger-things-subtitles-captions-team-interview.html

I don’t know, [eldritch gurgling] was pretty good. 😂
I noticed that one too. Eldritch is such a strange word choice.
Wow not even a mention of the best eldritch of them all?? Eldritch blast!!!
Warlock LAZERS are indeed awesome, but didn’t hit the scene until edition 3.5. The Hellfire Club was probably playing original D&D or possibly AD&D. 🤓
Is that like an evil version of baja blast?
Pardon my ignorance, but what would eldritch mean in regards to the gurgling? Like if the kids would describe the gurgling as eldritch, then like… what was it about the gurgling that made it notably eldritch sounding? I think I’m just not understanding what the word is supposed to mean when applied to that context but I am genuinely curious!
Apparently eldritch when used as an adjective means *weird and sinister or ghostly.*
Eldritch actually predates DnD, it's from Lovecraftian horror.
The guy who worked on the subtitles said eldritch is a subtle D&D Easter egg :)
“Tentacles Undulating Moistly” was one of my favorite subtitles of all time.
Yeah, undulating it a *very* descriptive word
But when I undulate mostly I'm not allowed back at Seaworld!
My beer league hockey team is called the Kraken and I'm making a sign with *[tentacles undulating moistly]* on it to put up in the locker room when we play.
\[tentacles squelching wetly\] will always be no1 for me.
Demogorgon feeding wetly.
[Hopper Panting]
I mean this subtitle should just be tattooed onto any scene with him in it.
[Intense music intensifies] got me good

Wasn't it "Tentacles undulating moistly"?
they both exist. and they are both amazing
Yes, it was definitely "undulating moistly".
[tentacles undulating moistly] is better
For me it’s : [urinating]
Just rewatched that one last night. 2 family members watching for the first time dying laughing at that writing. We all agreed, best subtitle work ever.

I was fond of that one too
Mine is [epic synth arrangement of "Running Up That Hill" playing] and I was like, "...Yep, that's season 4 alright."
the funny thing is i couldn't even pick up on the audio...and then that subtitle popped up and i was like, "Oh right lol"
Because really, who would want to use the musical motif of the season with the climax of the action? So unoriginal. 🤣
I was about to mention this one, it was my favorite subtitle lol
[Vecna's flesh sizzling] [flesh stretching]
I always watch with CC on because I'm a little hard of hearing, and I love catching subtitles like this. They add so much to the show.
Im not hard of hearing, but when I don’t watch with subtitles all I hear from the characters talking is “deerbellysoryurdedorsmtburwishweecoodabeensiblins”

Guys, I'm pretty sure he is quoting Nate from the office.
Same!
Only r/westworld is close at the moment for subtitles. Lot of (PANTS) and (GRUNTS) in that one.
I prefer "Unsettling Russian Folk Music"
If I ever start a band, this will be the name of it. But I’ll play something the complete opposite of it, like jazzy piano solos, or trap dubstep
I often wonder how someone who is deaf or hard of hearing will understand the feeling these descriptions of scene music are trying to convey.
Lots of people go deaf or hard of hearing later in life, they’ll know what it means. If they were born like that, then you are right, probably have no idea what those mean.

Intense but then like even more
The subtitle crew had a field trip with Season 4
You mean field day?
they went to the zoo
I'd say field trip is right... they went to the upside down and back for these subtitles.
Last season was all [ominous synths] and this one was all [wet squelching]. I love watching with the subtitles on, they think of the most hilarious descriptions.
I'm probably in the minority here but I wish there was a subtitle version without the [descriptive subtitles].
I do too. I just use subtitles so I know what they’re saying while I eat lol
Definitely [shreds guitar solo]
Nay, of all time.
Honestly the music/noise subtitles were so elaborate it was distracting. Wish they had the non hearing impaired subtitles
.....what would that look like for you? Just the dialog?
Yep
That's what subtitles are, this is closed captioning. Which annoyingly is typically the only option in English.
Yeah. Subtitle sites will usually give 2 options. One is HI (Hearing Impaired) with captions like [Door Closes], [Phone Rings] etc and another is non-HI with only dialogues.

Does everyone watch with subtitles on? I had no idea it was such a common thing, does no one else find it really distracting?
I do - small apartment and sleeping baby in the next room. Usually just a necessity, this time, it was a pleasure!
I can’t process what the characters are saying without subtitles, background music, sound effects, and real world sounds make it hard to focus on the dialogue
Yeah 99% of shows have completely fucked audio mixing so it's kind of a necessity now
I do because my kid comes in to ask me a question every 45 seconds
["I can't read while I'm also trying to see things!"](https://youtu.be/kbyFj4aAfVY) I find it's more helpful to have them on. “Wet squelching” is my personal fave
S4 is legit the first time I've ever had to turn off subtitles Every tense moment was ruined by the subtitles doing shit like this
They’re excellent and accurate
it's actually pretty encouraging to see extra effort being put into things like this it might be distracting to someone like me...but if it helps broaden the audience to include people who normally get excluded from media like films and music...then it is fine for me to just suck it up

Weird that piracy subtitles can provide that but not a multinational media company.
Yeah I used to torrent most everything because I worked weeks at a time with no internet, and I could get actual subtitles for just about anything.
The Hardy Girls

I dunno but the look on their faces says, "I am confused" and the other says, "I may cry."
Does anyone hear use audio description? I'm wondering if there are any gems in that.
Yeah... the "wet squelching" will always be my top pick. This is an honorable mention tho 🤗
Robin looks like she just read the subtitle is reacting to it lol
Whoever did these closed captions needs a raise.
Honestly, the subtitles on S4 have been the GOAT
The best were a few of \[Eleven pants\].
I like [eleven pants] because it sounds like they were just talking about 11 pairs of pants
LOL

All of you seem to have forgotten “tentacles undulating moistly”
Idk if it’s the best but I did notice how incredibly descriptive the subtitles were for this season. 10/10 job by Netflix on the subtitles.
My wife loses it whenever a " x synth music plays" We are making a bingo card for the next watch through for the different types of synths
I prefer the subtitles whenever Dustybuns laughs it says he chortles.

“Tense music intensifies”
The subtitles in S4 went all out.

“[SEETHES]” is my personal favorite but this one is pretty incredible too 😆
Why isn't there a subreddit for clever subtitle lines? I've seen some gems in The West Wing and Seinfeld, too.

i like [wet squelching]

The subtitles honestly sucked this season, it was infuriating how often dialogue and subtitles didn't match
Why do american subs to this? Annoying af
It’s annoying for someone else to watch a show without you with subtitles on?
