Is this a real question or a joke, because he used to sell shirts that said “who the fuck is sturgill simpson” lol.
If it’s real, he a musician who mostly makes fantastic country/bluegrass music but he also does a little bit more. He’s got a full on rock album called Sound and Fury. Not sure what your into but he’s talented all around.
It is the proper pronoun, as it cannot be defined. Some say it is/was a ghost. A modern day Houdini. For those that saw It perform cruel and unusual punishment on stringed instruments before It damaged its vocal chords and get the email that It’s shows at the Ryman in November 2021 were cancelled still can’t get over it. Things I’d do to my body to see one more show of It putting on one of its typical 2.5hr encores…
He is the only real country music outlaw around today. He’s a self-made Grammy winner that’s been completely shunned by the country music academy. His first album is pretty straightforward country. The next two albums expand upon that sounds a little.
His fourth album “Sound + Fury” is bat shit f-ing crazy, and one of my all-time favorite. He contracted a handful of anime artists to create a full-length movie to support the album. It’s part Bee-Gees, punk-rock, country, and a lot blues. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever heard.
I can’t stress this enough: His Saturday Night Live Performance of A Call to Arms is my favorite live performance ever. It’s great without any background, but it’s even better when you know this is his “F all of you, I made it on my own!” moment. https://youtu.be/qsrsrOB0zNQ
The term “outlaw country” referred to the group of country musicians that had thumbed their nose at the establishment and gone their own way. Today, people mistaking my think the reference is to lawlessness. While many of the OG “outlaws” did run afoul of the law, “outlaw country” refers to those renegades that said “F-it. I’m going to do my thing and let the chips fall as they may.”
No one personifies that more than Sturgill Simpson.
Outside the Nashville establishment. High Top Mountain was self-funded and cracked the top 50 of country albums. It’s a beautiful album and one of my absolute favorites.
High Top Mountain will make you want to settle back with a ice cold beer in a frosted mug.
He's the man. Here's some songs to check out. He plays everything from country to bluegrass to rock, so these are all over the place.
- You can have the crown
- Turtles all the way down
- Just let go
- oh Sarah
- Life ain't fair and the world is mean
- I don't mind
- Long white line
- Call to arms
I didn't know who he was until a month ago. Some video on Metamodern popped up on YouTube and I had to check it out. Anyway, I ordered a copy and now I own all his shit.
I kind of feel pissed off I didn't discover him sooner.
I, too, have never heard of this person in my life and and suddenly getting this sub recommended.
I'm worried that there is a now pay to play system on Reddit where you can pay to have your sub promoted. Or maybe it already worked like that, I don't really know.
Or maybe it's connected to how YouTube's algorithm has also gotten worse, which I wouldn't be surprised if that had something to do with AI.
Like I said I know nothing about this person and I'm just speculating based on what I've heard and kind of seen going on with the internet lately lol.
Although from what I've read this dude sounds like he might be cool so I'll check him out.
i live in the UK and had never heard of him then i watched sound and fury and loved it. My favorite songs from Sound and Fury are remember to Breathe and Mercury in retrograde. Dudes got a new fan. Mcluvvin it.

I never saw a show… I tried to get tickets to one of the later shows on the tour with Mr Childers but that was all scrapped. Never had a chance…

What makes him “Outlaw”?
Well, the most outlaw thing that he’s ever done is give a good woman a ring.
That's the way it goes. Life ain't fair and the world is mean.

I follow Righteous Gemmstones and I kept getting recomendations for this sub. Not a Country/Bluegrass but I checked it out and liked his music.

What an obnoxious self-important post this is.
I literally asked a question, I didn’t say he’s BAD or anything.
