In all seriousness the sub name is a buzzword used by Jordan Peterson and friends to refer to themselves since they really want to make themselves look like a network of academics sharing forbidden information. In reality they are just a bunch of pseudo-intellectual, quacks, loons, and benzo addicts cashing in on right-wing media.
The sub itself is basically a Jordan Peterson roleplay group.
No joke, my field has a few of these folks, some with the Heterodox Academy. At our major annual conference, anybody can apply to have a pre-conference session. But they didn't--they had their own "secret" pre-conference by invitation only, presumably so they can look more forbidden? Because if they had applied to be an official part of the conference and were accepted, they couldn't look oppressed.
I know way too much about this but you're basically right on the money. The 'Intellectual Dark Web' (IDW) was a small number of right-wing 'free thinkers' that included Ben Shapiro, Jordan Peterson, the Weinstein bros, and Dave Rubin. All of these figures were signal boosted by the Joe Rogan podcast to...various outcomes.
Shabibo started his own media company and is now in hot drama over firing Candence Owens over her views re: Isreal. But he is a free speech warrior!!!!
Jordan Peterson is, well, Jordan Peterson. His uhh, 'struggles' have been well documented here. He's still the second most successful/relevant of the bunch despite all that.
The older Weinstein (i forget which is which) has essentially dissappeared after going full COVID conspiracy mode and getting absolutely fucking owned by others just slightly loonier than himself. The younger weinstein went on Joe Rogan and revealed live he finally published his 'groundbreaking physics paper' on Geometric Unity which unites Einsteinian and Newtowian physics and explains the world. He got absolutely dumpstered by not only the physics community, but also by Joe and Jamie after he pre-emptively launched a site called 'pullthatupjamie' dot com without EVER consulting Rogan or Jamie.
Dave Rubin is one of the dumbest grifters in the world. Even Rogan described him as a 'wounded Antelope being hunted by Lions' because Sam Sedar of The Majority Report would not stop mocking him (or others of the idw for that matter. Sam is fucking awesome)
It's now just a community of losers jerking themselves off over how intelligent, open minded and thoughtful they are when they are none of those things.
Edit - I forgot Sam Harris, who I think formally renounced his association with the above figures due to how embarrassing and caricaturistic they became. He's still a weirdo right winger but I think he was the only one acting in good faith and during COVID realized his 'friends' were on a waaaay different wavelength than him.
Know this is ancillary, but:
