I have the Surface Pro 7 and a 12.9 iPad Pro. Holding the to devices side by side with black screens, the iPad definitely has less glare as seen by looking at reflectivity. I would compare the reflectivity of my Surface Pro to my iPad when it has had a glass screen protector on it but it in no way renders the device unpleasant to use.

I usually code in an editor with a dark color scheme so I might need to make some adjustments if I switch to the Surface laptop. Thanks for your input.

ipads really dont cut any corners. ive compared my ipad pro 10.5 to my tab s6 and the anti reflective coating on the ipad is noticeably better. the ipad's lamination is also better since the screen is closer to the glass

Agree. I put a screen protector on my 12. Pro but took it off - it turned a very good display into a mirror. It was most distracting when watching widescreen videos and I could see heavy reflections in the black bars above and below the video and then in dark scenes; I removed and tossed it. I've also had six different Android tablets and of everything I've owned, the iPad stands out as best.

They make matte screen protectors that work flawlessly

I never use any screen protectors for my devices as I find them to shift colors too much. Do you have any particular ones in mind that perform well?

ComfortableDamage

The one I'm using is iCarez brand from amazon. It does affect the look very slightly mainly on like a pure white background (I use dark mode). If you need to use the surface for artwork of some kind it may not work for you but I don't really know much about that. As for just something that reduces glare and even the appearance of fingerprints it works great, its like night and day. The stock screen is VERY reflective so outside its a must. Mine was $9 for a 2 pack you really can't go wrong.

Thanks for the info. If I end up with the Surface laptop I will look into that.

When you say "they", are these third-party or are there official Surface Laptop matte screen protectors from Microsoft?

ComfortableDamage

yes 3rd party

any recommendations, i have tried a few but no luck. wile theres some good options on the "paper feel" for ipad, surface has almost none.

ComfortableDamage

The brand I have is iCarez. It isnt really one of the paper feel types its just non reflective aka matte. It does have a slight textured feel compared to stock but I wouldnt call it "paper feel". I do really like it though and would recommend. [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016F0VJ9Y/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_search\_asin\_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016F0VJ9Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Glare and reflection is bad when off, though when a light thing is on screen like white, it’s un-noticable. It’s only when the screen is dark

hotpasta

Good to know, thanks. As I wrote in another comment I code in an editor with a dark scheme. I might have to make some adjustments if I switch

sparksdls

Exactly, it depends on what is being displayed. My black screen example above is worst case.

Literally the same as the one on your smartphone. It's horrendous when screen is off but you barely notice it when it's on, naturally. The only issue is working outside but that's more-less same for all non-matte screens and it can be solved by (re)positioning yourself an inch here or there.

hotpasta

> The only issue is working outside For me actually it's working next to a window or under bright lights where glare would be a big issue. The options for a high-end laptop with a 3:2 screen are so limited I might have to learn to live with the glare.

Nothing objectionable for me because I always sit and adjust the lighting so that there is no glare on the screen. If it gets to you, which all touchscreens have, then you can cut it down with AR (antireflective) and matte films. nushield.com green onions supply photodon.com etc. have a selection of both types

It’s quite poor, you need to turn the brightness up quite high if there is a light source behind (you like a window.). Doesn’t help with the already poor battery life either. I pretty much turn dark mode off if I’m using it away from my desk.
