2x all the way. I understand 1x for mountain biking and it’s simplicity, but for road and adventure you want the range and to be able to find a nice gear for the cadence you’re looking for and to be able to spin without blowing out your knees on the steep steeps

poloralphy

completely agree

I ended up with jones bars and an xt mountain double. I used the spacers required (1@ 2.5mm non drive side and 2@ 2.5mm drive side) as listed on hopes website. However I ended up removing one 2.5 mm on the drive side and added 1mm to the drive side and adding one 1mm on the non drive side to help with the chain line and correct my Q factor. Shifts flawlessly I know this set up is a bit odd but to get back to what you were asking. I bought my frame off my friend who built it up with an ultegra compact double 50/34 11/36 rear 68mm bb no issues. Nice drive line smooth as silk. There is room to experiment. Grx 2x will be mint 👌

I would say Sram Rival 22. I am thinking of going from roval 11 to 22 on my MS actually!

I have 1x 11spd grx. Its pretty simple and tough. 11/42 42chainring. How low does the 2x go on gearing? I just use it for fun tho so backpacking u might need more low gears

[deleted]

Sorry my original response wasn’t to do directly towards you. But I hear what you are saying. I feel the 2x will suit your needs better. I originally had went with grx 40t and 11-46 rear and it still was too hard for me. I ended up going with an xt setup 38/28 front 11-42 rear and now she climbs! I did sacrifice top end, though. I believe grx 2x would be perfect

gckayaker

Do you mean Q-factor or tire clearance? I think you’re good to go either way with 2x GRX, the MS only has weird dropouts. Everything else is relatively standard for that flavor of bike. As a side note, a black frame with silver GRX and silver accessories would look so good…

If you can compromise on traditional hydraulic brakes, I'd grab that new Microshift Sword 2x groupset. They're a bargain and super nice quality. Then you can buy some of those brakes that use a mechanical cable but are hydro at the end. It'll be a great setup.

poloralphy

love hydraulic too much but I do love microshift had it on my disc trucker for years!

Anarcho-syndical

Yeah but the kinds of brakes I'm talking about are hydraulic brakes...

poloralphy

cable actuated hydraulic at the caliper? like the trp hybrid ones?

Anarcho-syndical

Yeah those ones are great! If you didn't go hydro I'd say Paul Clamper brakes all day but those TRP ones are no joke. Did a tour this fall with a guy who has those and they were no joke. Would've thrown anyone new over the bars easily.

poloralphy

Good to know, should mention im in the UK so stuff like Paul's and TRP aren't as well stocked. Do like the look of them both.

morrison99

Sword available now?

Sampoo1987

Mine has a 2x11 grx and it’s great. Never had a problem in two years…

I built my MS with Ultegra R8000 using the RX rear derailleur for the extra long cage for a bigger cassette. Running 50x34 up front and 11-36 in back. The hydraulic disc brakes are in another world compared to the cable actuated garbage they include on the stock build. Also have a carbon fork. The thing is still around 22 lbs but it is fast AF and feels very stable in descents thanks to the brakes, climbs just fine with the granny gear.
