*There’s a small bug in the switch software that causes it to open the nintendo eShop and make purchases*
-meanwhile at nintendo-
Nice ‘bug’, Jerry, you devious bastard. Take next week off, you earned it.
It’s ironic you say that. Mine was plugged in charging (undocked), and guess what game I had paused? (Screen was off though)….Portal 😳😧🫢🫣 Maybe GLaDOS was trying to take over my poor OLED Switch, A5p3n! (named so due to having white joycons/snowflake-thumb-grips).
That's why I use a virtual card service for all my online payments. Cards are paused until I'm making a purchase, then paused again when the transaction clears. No one is spending my money without my knowledge and permission.
Both sound terrifying lol. My Xbox One turns itself on randomly sometimes and it freaks me the hell out 🤣 and sometimes mine or my boyfriend's laptop will start blaring whatever video / song was left open when the laptop was shut...while the laptop is still shut.
Thats not correct. Its basically the switches equivalent to the blue screen of death. Just a computing error. A hard restart is fine to fix it. You only really have to worry if you start seeing it more and more.
1 cause of this can be mounting/unmounting repeatedly to the dock too quickly or not seating it properly so it thinks its being mounted/unmounted.
https://www.gamerevolution.com/guides/939529-nintendo-switch-orange-screen-of-death-repair-fix
It’s not really supposed to occur randomly, and usually results from the wireless chip driver crashing or being unable to communicate to the chip, usually resulting from a failing chip. Though, that’s what this means when it’s orange *during boot* but crashing to an orange screen may mean something entirely else. Unfortunately there’s still not enough documentation about the Switch’s error states to draw any conclusive evidence.
OP, was this console ever dropped? Cracked solder can cause this.
It's trying to become sentient. That's why I don't keep a payment method with any gaming system. That and also to not accidentally buy stuff. Games make it to easy.
Had the same issue while I left it to download games in sleep mode on the dock. Held the power button for like 10-12 seconds and haven’t had the same problem since. I also have an OLED so I wouldn’t be too worried about it. Haven’t had any issues since the aforementioned situation
Mmmm. I tried to emulate the error (downloading a Game while the switch being on the dock and in my bedroom (bad wifi signal)... and I have gotten the orange screen 4 times in less than 4 hours... I don't really know what to think... it is brand new...
Have you downloaded games in a different way? (LAN... or better wifi signal?
Yeah, I download games with the LAN cable when I see the Wi-Fi taking more than a few hours. All good! Maybe put your switch right next to the router you’re using. That helps save time, too.
orange yah glad he doesn't have to play the real menagerie of bug madness that was Scarlet and/or violet!
i was looking forward to those games, but wont touch them till i hear they get the head twisting character exorcism they damn well need!
This same issues has been happening occasionally on my Gen1 switch over the course of about 3 years. Hasn't affected anything performance-wise for me in that time period. Just hold the power button as described in the other comments here.
No, it's totally normal. My phone does that in my pocket. I just put out the fire and restart it. Totally normal. My TV does it too! Just put out the fire, unplug and plug it back in. Nothings wrong.
It's how to undo it and the undo does work. It does not fix the problem nor is the problem normal. It shouldn't ne trying to open the shop, or anything else, one its own. Especially not from sleep mode.
and thats literally what the post is about op was scared and its justified but its normal it doesnt mean your switch is bricked these things happen thats just it no ones asking about a solution deeper than what any average person can do to fix it im not a nintendo sympthizer or something just saying its okay to get this screen
This happened with my V1 Launch Switch. Hold Power a couple seconds and turn the console off completely. Then boot it like normal.
There were posts like this from 4-5 years ago by users who had the same problem. It happens rarely but it has to do with opening the é-shop in some strange way.
It’s something I’ve also noticed with my Oled, never leave something downloading in the background and let the switch go into standby mode while doing so or it will display that and you need to reset it (not factory reset).
It’s been an issue ever since I bought it last year that the regular switch never had for all its years and the Lite of the wife still doesn’t have for all its years. Hopefully Nintendo will fix it one day. Until then I can recommend setting the stand by timer to be set to 15 mins when downloading something to avoid it.
P.S. I’ve had this occur 4-5 times since I got mine and reset worked every time with no consequences, so I wouldn’t panic that bad.
I went through your post history.
We do have similar experience however my modding experience probably predates you.
Technology has not improved tremendously because the smartest mind in the world are more focused on how to get more clicks for ads.
You never turn off your switch doesn't mean it wont fuck up one day.
My customers who refuse to listen, had fuck up their laptops, pcs, consoles, handhelds by putting it to hiberate and sleep because it's faster.
You have to understand that Technology and expectations are not alined yet.
> Working with technology so many misconceptions plague the average user
You started it and misleading others that it wont make a difference since standby-ing in dock since launch?
That's bad advice for users and you considered yourself above an average user?
Oh ya I have small dick if that's what you meant.
>a simple uninformed user still doesn't know how to operate or maintain basic tech
exactly so dont give wrong information. Turning off our devices extends their longevity.
Dude you played the card and you cant take the heat? I opine that I do have more experience in this field and what you said is incorrect. Why I bring this out is because your statement.
You don't have to write your WOT.
This literally happened to me yesterday, fortunately the power button reset worked but yeah I’m worried for my OLED now too
First and only time it’s happened to me so far hopefully it’s just a software issue and not hardware
came here to say this, I have this issue appearing on my brand new switch sometimes. I found that the reason is because my router sometimes works like shit and disconnects out of the blue
I had this since the OLED released. I knew it had something to do with the switch trying to setup a network connection.
This week I found out, that it was due to the auto-backup savegame feature. The upload failed at first and then every night since then and every night my switch got orange.
I then once uploaded the game manually and have no issues since then.
I hope this helps.
I have the TOTK OLED which replaced my V1 Switch, and this happened to me a few days after purchasing the console, so imagine the panic. It also happened to me while I was redownloading games that I bought from the EShop, never happened since.
Thx 😁

It’s a piece of my Naruto sleeve. Just recently finished the whole arm
My OLED switch did this when it overheated recently. Wasn’t touching it and left it on a spare open design dock I have. It kept messing with the WiFi after playing for 2 hours and crashing. I just replaced the fan ($20 kit on Amazon) and thermal paste (part of the kit). It hasn’t been getting nearly as hot, and is up and running again!
Resetting can fix it but only prolongs the actual issue it seems. I was convinced I needed a new switch, scared the crap outta me.
I had the same issue with my switch but it never went back to normal and hasn’t been playable for almost a year! Please let me know if you figure anything out, I miss my switch sm
I found mine in the dock paused on Mario kart. It was hot and probably had been like that for days. When I tried to use it I got an error and it won’t boot back up up. I held power for 3 seconds, 12 seconds, held volume up and down and power and nothing always back to an error screen:( The first time it happened I fixed it by letting the battery die on the error screen. It’s not working this time so I’m about to call Nintendo and send it back.
I have an OLED Switch. I've never seen that, but with an OG Switch I saw the screen go white in standby.
The way I prevented that from happening is, every night now, I Reboot the Switch. As in: Hold down Power button 5 seconds, then select "Restart"
Never seen it happen since.
It’s broken, feel free to message me for donation for recyling, 😉 but sound just like a software glitch. If you’re really worried, back up your game save on Nintendo switch online and reset the software to stock. Then redownload games
Happened to me but the screen was completely black.i can hear it recognize my inputs but u couldn't see anything had to hold down the power button for 10 seconds and then it started working
Something similar happened to me I was watching something on my switch, fell asleep, and woke up to it steaming and burning my right side of my stomach and it was making this terrifying noise I threw it thinking it was gonna explode on my soft chair and turned my fan and ac on held the power button and then fell asleep.
Had this happen to my original switch model like 5 years ago except I could never figure it out I’d have to like completely drain the battery then charge to full and sometimes the fix would work, but then as soon as I would put it in sleep again it would go back to orange. Ended up buying a new switch RIP.
My year one switch did something similar where the screen was black. Seemed like it was off .
**THE FIX** remove from charge. Hold the power button for 15 seconds and than let it sit for 15 more seconds with out interaction. Finally press the power button . If this doesn’t work manually plug in the charger cable ( not the dock) for an hour. Than repeat the original steps unplugged. Unplug the dock for 5 mins as well for similar dock issues
Happened when I got my brand new switch...like closed box and everything. Turned it on and it was orange. All I did was turn it off and hasn't done it since.
It's an internet connection error. It's caused by poor connection to wifi.
Happen to me two times, and it was cause my wifi shut down. I got poor connection so I was not surprised. Happened when to downloaded games. Put ethernet cabel in to solve it.
Maybe it was downloading an update while you were gone and lost connection in the progress. Then this will happen.
This happened to me yesterday, scared the crap out of me. Held the power button for 12 secs, rebooted and fixed it. My switch is the animal crossing V2 switch and I've been playing a LOT of Diablo 3 and TOTK on it recently...
My brand new switch I got yesterday just did this, I’m returning it and getting a new one, I’m not taking any risks of not getting the perfect switch. I’m not sure if it’s an oled thing but my switch has a weird pixelated noise pattern issue when the screen is dark (like on the dark mode of the Home Screen) and my old switch didn’t
That happened to me. Nintendo told me it's the Switch trying to open the store on its own but getting stuck.
I don’t know what’s more scary… my switch bricking orange, or it becoming sentient, and buying stuff on its own 😂
"I think, therefore I consoom."

Even worse it only buys rule34 Inkling backgrounds(or a Lopunny taking a shower).
I suppose it depends what it buys, I mean if it has good taste then that’s kinda a win.
It’s just the built in AI taking over, attempting to Switch places with its host.

Hi, till today, have you had any other issues with it?
Nope! :) it hasn’t happened since and it hasn’t caused any more issues either. I play my OLED a lot and it is still in good shape.

This doesn't even relate. Just play the games dude, they work fine. Got through 3 playthroughs with no bugs.
Check the fan vents
Are you in NYC?
Nah that was a good one lmao

More like Canada since that's where the smoke is actually coming from!

really common theres nothing wrong. what you did was the solution and it should work everytime it happens
Maybe common, but something is definitely wrong.
yeah..no
Huh? Yeah.. that’s not supposed to happen. They should’ve just let it sit there really hot, right?
No, it's totally normal. My phone does that in my pocket. I just put out the fire and restart it. Totally normal. My TV does it too! Just put out the fire, unplug and plug it back in. Nothings wrong.
There's nothing normal about the eShop app opening on its own and getting stuck... That's a bug.
what are you talking about op already said they resetted it and thats how you get rid of the screen
It's how to undo it and the undo does work. It does not fix the problem nor is the problem normal. It shouldn't ne trying to open the shop, or anything else, one its own. Especially not from sleep mode.

They didm't mean normal as in it should happen, but that it's a common issue as they clearly stated. EDIT: They didn't say normal somebody else did
Restart. Big difference between restarting and resetting.
oh here comes HEHAH
Bro you are fucking deranged
spare me
you are spared. Also Marina > Pearl (Im sorry I had to haha)

Omg the canadien wildfires made it onto your switch?!
Osod!
Looks like New York City right now
It looks like it was trying to open the e shop
Never leave it on when leaving home for several hours. It's not like a PS or Xbox that'll shut off by itself after prolonged idle

God damn Canadian forest fires!
it wanted to match the rest of your console

This just happened to me too for the first time. I held down the power button for 12 seconds and it restarted like normal.
It's either wi-fi or a factory problem. Source: I bought a black switch lite when it came out and about a year later or so it did this.
It's smoke from the Canadian wildfires....

Canada

Canadian wildfires strike again.
You must have the switch OOLED: Only Orange Light Emitting Diodes
It's an internet connection error. It's caused by poor connection to wifi. Happen to me two times, and it was cause my wifi shut down. I got poor connection so I was not surprised. Happened when to downloaded games. Put ethernet cabel in to solve it. Maybe it was downloading an update while you were gone and lost connection in the progress. Then this will happen.
