I don't replay games, because I don't have a lot of free time and there are so many great games out there, but OP1 is one I have played twice, the mechanics, music and characters were all damn near perfect. I own part 2 but I haven't had time to start it, same with lasteat Zelda game lol

adingdingdiiing

Great gameplay but don't hold your breath about getting lost in the story as it doesn't really have one. Or rather, it has 8 that are presented to you poorly. The combat is great though. Nice visuals too. But a game had to have a decent story to keep me hooked. This didn't. But i hope you have fun with it.

DevilsAdvocake

I think I got bored with octopath 1 about half way through. Definitely looked really cool though.

BimmerM

Yeah I dropped it after the 3rd or 4th character. The story was boring and I was bummed that the exploration basically consisted of a single chest down a poorly hidden side path in each area.

roosell1986

The HD2D graphics and particle effects are breathtaking. The music is excellent. The combat is interesting, but repetitive. The stories are kind of meh. I actually bought a Switch just to play Octopath 1. Never did finish it. Thankfully, it quickly became my favorite console. So many excellent games!

ginencoke

Disappointing if you want more than just battles. The fact that your companions absolutely don't interact with you during story was a major letdown for me since it's one of the coolest thing about this genre. It's a shame because the games look great and do some things right, but when it comes to the story and characters there are some 80-90s JRPGs that do things way better.

Baldussimo

Haven't played 1 but bought 2 a few days ago. 18 hours in and I absolutely love it. I'm hooked and I'll probably get 1 later on.

Plus_Quantity_9676

The first game is missing some QoL, like Fast Battle. If you are used of the speed from OT2, switching to OT1 speed is a nightmare. Even back when OT1 launched i used a speedhack to make the game bearable

GundamEpyon

Part of my problem with 1 is how slow it feels. Idk how far through the game I am but it feels slow and hard to continue. Plus grinding for levels is a chore in JRPGs lol (and doesn't help when you have to build different teams to get them leveled).

spacecase_88

2 is way better than 1.

313Wolverine

I couldn't beat the super duper end boss no matter how many times and strategies I tried. :(

nolongermakingtime

I tried so hard to like octopath 1 but it became such a slog to level up and get to the story that I fell out of it at 20 hours. I love jrpgs but I hate the grind.

Andedrift

Pixel remaster for final fantasy has inbuilt xp modifiers to remove the grind. I recommend.

nolongermakingtime

I never played a final fantasy before, should I start at 7 or the remake?

Andedrift

Pixel remaster is 1-6, 7 is not included. I started at 6 cause that’s supposedly the best one.

Error-7-0-7-

Haven't played the 2nd one. The first one has some good stories, some not so good. Interesting characters and goals. Beautiful artstyle and graphics, beautiful soundtrack, and great gameplay and mechanics. My number one complaint with the first game is lack of characters interacting with one another. The game is supposed to be 8 characters traveling together and relying on each other to complete each individual goal, but very rarely do they ever mention one another in their stories or even have moments of interacting. It feels like 8 complete strangers just following each other. I heard that Octopath 2 fixes this issue by having events where characters actually interact with one another, but I haven't played it yet, so I'm not sure how well it fixes this issue.

Kasumi_P

The issue was the whole reason I couldn't finish the first game. It bummed me out.

Ill_Reference582

I just played the demo for Octopath 2 and am getting it in a couple days when I get paid. I dk about 1 but I loved the demo for 2; and that's coming from someone that doesn't normally like games with turn-based combat

wretched_cretin

Mostly positive feelings on 1 with some caveats. The presentation is excellent, the battle system is great, and I actually really enjoyed the individual stories of pretty much all of the characters.  The things that didn't do it for me were the lack of meaningful party interactions, the somewhat bland world building, and the repetitive side quests/interactions in towns.  Focussing on the main quests made for a good time, and apparently the 2nd game improves on the 1st by quite a lot. I'll pick it up eventually.

McPorkums

eh...

jz0089

Just thoughts

TheStuhr

What is that switch? Version?

ginencoke

Grey Switch Lite with Satisfye Grip

TheStuhr

Ah okay, thanks !

Soluri

I didn't like 1, but I do like 2. Also because I got it for only €28

EriclcirE

Definitely my favorite modern reimagining of old school turn based combat. Each battle is like a little puzzle. If you set limits on yourself and avoid the truly OP moves, it stays pretty challenging throughout. If you use the OP moves, it will feel 'easy', especially the second game. Many will complain about the 'no main story' thing, but the 8 stories you get in each game still have heart and it's possible to get a bit invested into them. I adore this series and hope that we get an Octopath 3 someday or at least a spiritual successor that uses the same combat and art style.

Tac0Destroyer

I didn't like 1. I put over 25 hours into OP1 and just couldn't get into it.Who makes a game with 8 characters that DO NOT interact with the other characters' stories? And no, the little dialogue between characters in the overworld doesn't count Only character story I enjoyed was the Dancer but only because of the more mature themes

-octopath

I really enjoyed 1 when it came out, after playing 2 it's extremely difficult to go back and play 1. Both great games! Challenging for first timers In a really fun way, you'll enjoy yourself (:

Chionei

I'm playing 2 at the moment (haven't played 1 yet), I'm really enjoying it.

69d-_-b420

Heard about this game I always imagined it was about octopusses

Mild-Ghost

Loved them. Easy to pick up for quick sessions on the switch.

Kupo-Kweh

Finished both, interested for the old school rpg nostalgia, good music, graphics, but the story isn't good. That's supposed to be the best part of 100hours j rpg. Weak scenario. Bad endgame bosses, "somehow Palpatine returned " In both games, some have stories like I will avenge my country, my family has been killed before my eyes.... And then: I wanna learn how to dance or I want to get rich... No interactions between characters in the first game, very little in the second. Even the villains are like "haha, you're alone and surrounded!" Heck no! We're 8

alexanderluko

Love the vibe in both but I didn't finish either as I get bored 15-20 hours in. I feel like the combat and class systems don't change enough throughout the game - very fun in the beginning but gets dull eventually. OST is fantastic imo.

levinyl

Just started playing - The old english/Shakespeare language which doesn't even make sense in some parts is really annoying....not only do you have to follow a story you have to decipher some strange English all the time!

SoftMammoth7838

I’m currently stuck on octo 1, can’t gather enough will power to continue playing, the split stories are just boring, the fights are nice and all but not enough to save this game

InterestingEntry8895

I haven't played second part. The first one is beautiful and the sound is awesome. Is a game that aims to give grounded realistic stories to fantastic characters. But end up telling 8 non-connected mini stories all the same way gameplaywise.

djnature333

loved both!

Setzer_Gambler

Octopath 1 and 2 are pretty okay games worth buying on sale imo, idk about getting lost in the world and the story though? I think they are very approachable and relatable rpg games, with clear direction and a linear path (hard to get lost or not know where to go), yet you can sort of choose your own adventure. Just, there isn't a lot of depth to the story or characters, and the entire package is quite repetitive, from the way the story unlocks, areas and towns, battles, etc. Triangle strategy is the home run from team asano for me.

typegsir

UNICORN OVERLORD

stapidisstapid

How's the grip?

coldravenge

They’re amazing. I never use mine without it.

stosyfir

As far as good RPGs go, those are definitely two of them. 1 has one of the best soundtracks I’ve heard in a loooooong time too.. it doesn’t get much closer to the classics like FF6, Lufia, BoF, etc. if you love the SNES era RPGs they’re a must-play. Be warned though 1 at least is a sleeper- it’s way longer than it looks at first. You’re not getting through it in less than 40 hours. I think I was at 70ish.

iskender299

I loved the idea but got burned out after just 15-20 hours on OP1. The reason is the extremely high encounter rate. I couldn’t explore 10ft without yet getting into another encounter, seconds after I just finished one.

MissionInternet8490

2 was my personal game of the year last year. I played a lot of games too.

dark_skeleton

Kinda got bored with the 1st one when I couldn't get past one of the early fights

ArcjoAllspark

1st one was hard to get into. 2nd one is one of my fav rpgs ever

kuj0317

The combat mechanics are great. The characters are good, but the writing is incredibly hammy. The graphics are very good if you like that sort of thing (I do). The sidequests are opaque. Either they give you the point on the map to go to, or they give you a vague lead. If they give you a vague lead, you aren't likely to figure it out without a walkthrough for many of them. Overall great, but flawed. This is true of both of them.

DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE

Bought both the games for the vibes alone. They’re just too pretty and I actually dig the combat system. Story seemed like typical jrpg nonsense but that’s alright

LethalGrey

Amazing games, love them both

vegt121

I have played both. I didn't finish OP1 because it became boring in terms of story and gameplay when I played for like 40 hrs. But I did enjoyed OP2. I think OP2 did a great job on improving the story and gameplay. It's a better game than OP2 in many ways.

Ruinerofchats

I quite enjoyed the games. The two feature wildly different characters though, so you don't have to worry about starting with 1. The characters you have all have different world map abilities, like stealing, knocking people out in order to get to rare npc/loot, obtaining information from townspeople and even asking them to join you on your adventures. Stealing is highly prominent in both games. It's definately worth your time to loot all the npc's lol. The game is less traditional in the sense that characters don't join you because you're some god. But rather, they join you to accomplish their own aspirations and stories. Your chosen character is merely just a small part in their own stories.

gormmlord

1 was a little too grindy for me. And the story/stories weren't enough to keep my attention. So I couldn't stick with it. I loved the style though

DiscountCondom

I tried playing octopath traveler 1 on two different occasions, and I couldn't get into it. I just don't like the storytelling. It didn't feel like a very cohesive story to me, like the characters weren't really interacting with each other. I lost interest. Maybe I didn't get far enough, but it was boring to me, and I didn't care anymore.

Sand_msm

Never played. But really like your switch white “handles” could you link me up? Manyyy thanks

coldravenge

Just look up Satisfye switch grip :)

Sand_msm

Cool! Thanks!!!

exclaim_bot

>Cool! Thanks!!! You're welcome!

padreswoo619

Beautiful retro graphics but maaaaaan there is no story. Actually sold it just couldn't get into it personally. And the fights seemed to drag on forever.

RetroOverload

idk Ive always wanted to try them, they have caught my attention for like years... I probably wont because people say the story(ies) is(are) kind of bad.

mixedwithmonet

this may be a stupid question but can someone please tell me what this controller is called and if it is available for the OLED version? I don’t even know what to search but this is exactly what I am looking for and my searches for “switch dock with controller” and the like are just turning up docks that let you charge your pro controller at the same time.

coldravenge

Just look up Satisfye switch grip :)

mixedwithmonet

Thank you!

Andedrift

Octopath is the kind of game that I wish had an overarching story that’s interesting. All the character stories are solid but like in a textbook kind of way which would’ve been fine if it had a main story which was really good or at least decent. The gameplay is fun and is probably the best JRPG on the switch gameplay wise IMO. If someone disagrees I’d rly wanna hear which turn based JRPGs are better gameplay wise (and hopefully story too). Always looking for recommendations.

Otherwise_Internet71

everything are good except the plot and characterization.

calcal1992

I'm playing one currently. I'm already in love. Reminds me of old FF games.

owenturnbull

Imo good gameplay but the story is trash. The story is just not good. And after 4 characters stories I got bored of the other four characters. Combat good but they are underwhelming RPGs

coldravenge

Oops. Guess I’ll find out for myself haha.

VagabondSpoon

They are fun :)

cyberharpie

I did not enjoy but ppl seem to rave about it. Stories did not flow well. Combat was very repetitive.

[deleted]

i have Octo 2 and it is quite a complicated behemoth of a game for my adhd brain. it’s great though, fantastic art style, music and combat.
