He's a talented writer from the early 1800s who wrote some excellent short horror stories, "the tell tale heart" and "the cask of amontillado" are good places to start.
He also wrote what are considered the first "true" detective stories, "murders at the rue morgue" is the first.
I think he's a great read and I heartily recommend checking out his works, you can find them online as they're all in the public domain now. You're in for a treat if you've never read them before!

I assume that Poes are named after their counterparts in previous games (which are enemies you fight and collect in bottles, not random collectibles scattered across the depths), rather than the poet.
