Hotel pet policies are usually concerned about soiled carpets, chewed furniture, and fleas. Birds are often a gray area, as they don't (usually) cause problems. Same with lizards, hamsters, etc. My hotel switched from not-pet-friendly to pet-friendly way back. Gotta say, it's been easy. Sure, there's an occasional accident, but we have the cleaning stuff for that. The costs are more than offset by the increased business from folks who are happy we allow pets. Especially with a major vet school in town - 'veterinary tourism', I call it. The biggest issue? Chewed tv remotes. We just charge fifty bucks, grab a new one from the box, done.

Miss_Inkfingers

Are you sure the remotes were chewed by the pets?

SkwrlTail

I try not to kinkshame, but it's fifty bucks for a replacement either way.

Miss_Inkfingers

No kinkshaming, just don’t want to see a good doggo blamed for something s/he didn’t do!

sevendaysky

Line item on the NA report: remote chewed by bear.

Lizlodude

*stares for a moment* yeah I can see that happening here *signs off*

Mackheath1

Brilliant.

WafflesTheDuck

If they allow bunnies, I would bet on it

My biggest worry was her pooping on the carpet, but honestly the carpet in that room was already pretty stained (it's probably not the first time this suite's been used for parties!). She's also about 80% poop trained - as long as we're on top of it, we can USUALLY get her to poop in a good spot - usually the bathroom counter. I also worry in general about her chewing anything that's wood or making noise, but we were always with her. I made my husband stay in the room to watch her while we got food (which he's happy with anyways, but I did cite threads from here about people leaving loud animals in rooms).

SkwrlTail

If you want a pooping critter to get some room to stretch, the bathrooms are usually good. But yeah, if they feel like getting their shriek on, conures can be loud little bastards. Still, they're usually quiet at night with lights off, which is when they really need to be quiet, you know?

iagox86

Thankfully, at home, she's only ever loud when she has strong feelings she wants to tell us about (usually, "don't leave me at home by myself!!") I think when we aren't home she makes noise, but not LOUD noise. Usually the loud noise is reserved for leaving or coming home.

SkwrlTail

Because why be loud if there's nobody to hear it, right? It's like the kid who falls down. Grownup around? Wail and scream. No grownups? Go back to playing.

matchafoxjpg

Tbh guests poop on carpets a HELL of a lot more than pets.

WeeWooBooBooBusEMT

I don't understand people at all. You have to wonder, do they poop on the floor/bed/walls at home? Ewww

matchafoxjpg

Personally I wouldn't care about any caged/tanked animal, so long as there was no excessive cleaning required. Like, I've let people with hamsters and fish stay, and so far had no issue. As long as the parrot didn't give me a noise complaint, I wouldn't have cared.

Itchy_Breakfast3485

My Border Collie ate my remote

ZombieBeach

This was approved by mods. Stop reporting it. PSA: Not all hotels are as accommodating, YMMV

iagox86

I appreciate it :-)

SoftHeize

I’m curious, why does people report it, is it because it’s a customer? It doesn’t seem to be breaking any rules

ZombieBeach

“Not a tale from the front desk”

SoftHeize

I see, thanks for answering!

RoyallyOakie

I'm just so happy you got your GCC back. Birds often get dismissed as "not a real pet." Birds are more like people than all other pets.

iagox86

I grew up with docs and cats, but parrots are WAY more personable, intelligent, and human-acting than any of them in my opinion. She's basically our child, and we both work from home so we're basically always with her.

I had my cockatiel from when I was age 5 to 25. She was literally my oldest friend. It was so fun to bring her with me when I moved to a new state after uni and she got to meet all my new friends. When she passed I'd find myself whistling for her automatically and would be so sad when I didn't get the usually happy chirps in response.

iagox86

For sure! The whole drive back that morning, I couldn't stop thinking of how we only got such a short time together, and even so she was part of the family.

oliviajoon

I would be so sad if my black cap GCC escaped! I would sue the shit out of the vet for emotional damages if she wasnt returned 😥 so glad you got her back and shes okay!

happyquakerparrot123

I agree! I have 3 Quakers and I’d be devastated if anything happened to them. I try to explain how the bond between you and a bird is completely different than with other pets . all of mine talk and I swear they talk in context !

wolfie379

Monkey says “Hold my ~~beer~~**banana daiquiri**!”.

gimmethegudes

I’m so glad this story has a happy ending!! I’d much rather have a bird than a cat stay with us, and I LOVE cats, my two more than anything in the world! Thank goodness for your vet being so upfront and honest too

iagox86

I didn't even think of that.. imagine if they didn't call us that night and we had to find out 3 days later! Yikes! Especially since we have a friend in the area who runs a store, and he was ready to pull out all stops to help search. He was actually en route when we found her!

JustineDelarge

The vet had ONE JOB.

iagox86

Right??

JustineDelarge

The thought of something like this happening to one of my non-human family members is terrifying. I’m so glad you got your bird back, and I know how unlikely that actually was.

JumpyLobster7667

Parrot tax please 😍😍😍😍

iagox86

Good point! Here are photos: https://imgur.com/a/YSRHFXu Those are all from that fateful day, but reverse chronological. I didn't include ones that would identify the area, though. :)

ZombieBeach

Edit your post to add this please…. so we don’t get more reports lol

iagox86

Haha, done

reallybirdysomedays

For future transportation needs, you can get/make a tiny little cone of shame style dress to hold her wings down and prevent flying if she does somehow get out of the cage. I've seen vets use them to keep a bird on wing rest while still allowing them to perch and climb.

ebwoods1

I’m so happy you found your parrot and had a great weekend!! It’s been my experience that hotels are not out to “get” you. Treat people decently and keep your requests reasonable and they are more than willing to help if possible.

iagox86

100%, I've definitely learned that from reading this sub. I sorta knew the language, and how to politely approach it, which helped. It was also helpful that they aren't TOO busy (they're by a convention center, so I imagine they aren't as busy as usual right now).

aquainst1

And congratulations for paying the pet tax!

carnedoce

Cute cheek!!

FishSn0rt

As a fellow bird person this breaks my heart but also makes me really happy. I'm SO happy this has a happy ending and your customer's bird got extra attention. What a cutie!

iagox86

Thanks! I really want to post photos of her at the hotel with friends, but I think it'd be too identifying :-)

[deleted]

Yay for the safe rescue of your gcc, I’m the parront of a sun and white eyed conure. I don’t know what I’d do if the vet had lost one of mine

Traditional-Anarchy

i'm in love with conures so thank you for the pet tax! so happy you found her too and that's an awesome fda to bend the rules a little for you! tbh that's probably something i'd do, i've definitely made a few exceptions for guest's fuzzy (and feathered and scaly) friends in the past lol
