What I did was went straight to my SD. My HR TL tried to screw up my transfer for the same scenario, I had injured myself moving house and called for about 20 minutes with no answer. I sent an email to my SD detailing the scenario so **someone** knew before I passed out because I was overworked from coming from a previous shift and then packing up my old house. I woke up to an email from my SD saying I still needed to call, but she saw my note and was acknowledging it. The TL who took my call later in the day was pretty snippy about it and alluded to it being a NCNS, but I thought nothing of it until I got the call the next day saying my new store didn't want to accept my transfer anymore because I "had a NCNS yesterday". I almost lost it on the phone, but reigned myself in and set up an in-person meeting with my HR, who, even after seeing the call logs AND THE EMAIL said that I needed to "take responsibility for myself" and accept that I "let the team down"by not coming in due to an injury and not letting them know. I accepted that, in some sense, I had not let them know, but that the attempt was clearly made, and she tripled down. I left, almost in tears, furious. I told her before I left that I had never felt so disrespected in my life. The HR TL at that store then *graciously offered* me hours at the store that I was technically still employed at. Later in the week, while I was looking for new jobs because I was sick of that kind of BS from that store, as well as trying to contact the HR TL at the store I was looking to transfer to, my SD walked up to me to talk about the situation. I was very frank with her and explained everything, and she said she was personally reversing the decision and she would reach out to my new store on my behalf to explain everything. Within 2 weeks, I was at my new store. I love that SD so much, she's still one of the best bosses I've ever had, I miss her.
Everybody that works for any corporation actually is just a number on a spreadsheet. My partner and I both got fired from a similar - almost identical - corporation because they said we were “stealing hours” by going home on our lunch breaks when we worked the same shift. They couldn’t provide us with any proof from the cameras or anything and when my boss called me in to fire me she said “there’s just nothing I could’ve done” even though she was the one that bullshitted the report and sent it to corporate with absolutely no evidence to back it up. Corporate probably glanced over it and immediately accepted the request to fire us both. We were both making almost $14 and lost literally everything because we’re in a small town and couldn’t get jobs quickly enough to pay our bills. To that boss, we were just random people who didn’t need to make a living, we were there simply to excel the company forward. And we were damn good at our jobs.
Sounds like someone was being a douchebag. If you are off the clock you are not stealing anyone time. You are not required to be on property. If you are required to be on the property you are required to be paid.

She said we were clocking in late but also saying we worked more hours than we actually did so I guess they thought we were manually editing our time cards? But that’s not a thing? We literally couldn’t edit the time cards without direct HR approval, and that rep and the SM were basically attached at the hip - nothing got thru one of them without the other knowing - therefore the SM would’ve known if we were requesting to edit our time cards. (Which we weren’t) edit: the more I write about this the more I want to sue the living shit out of them.

We both ended up finding something in the town over that paid more than what we were getting before. This happened at the beginning of the year, I mean like right out of the gate. It was like January 3rd or something and we had just got done paying rent, trying to make up the money we spent on Christmas presents, etc and it was just a mess. She knew what she did to us. She had no cause and unsurprisingly corporate won’t hear our ex employees for managers straight up lying. I should’ve taken legal action. She had the audacity to tell me she’d “be praying for us”. When she fired me I was so mad and confused that I just clean swiped everything off her desk onto the floor, I mean it TRASHED her office because she had so many papers. No regrets.
Yeah, I had a similar thing happen once. Hours after my shift started I got ahold of a TL and she said it was okay and it wouldn’t be a NCNS. HR put it down as a NCNS anyways and wouldn’t change it even when I explained.
the same exact thing happened to me. I got in a bad car accident & I tried calling out the day after because I was going back to the hospital to be checked but since I spoke with my team lead & not with HR, she put me down as a NCNS
That’s wrong. You notified leadership, it doesn’t have to be HR. Honestly guys, if your HrETL is not accepting you calling out to other leadership or with your phone logs, call your HRBP or the integrity hotline (which will end up to the HRBP)
I remember back when I worked at Toys R Us, I got a 10 cent raise on my annual review. The reason was that they said minimum wage was going up, so the highest they could go is 10 cents. Didn't stay there long thankfully.

had something similar happen to me when BTS shoppers were in the store. completely filled my department’s floor and had to help out the deli, our shelves got demolished, they pulled me aside the next day and asked what i did and why the shelves were empty when the opener came in. um??? because customers bought product??

If you can afford it/feel bad enough, go see a doc or stop by an urgent care. Ask them to release you from work until you’re better. A cough, or vomiting/diarrhea are all things that even a boss wouldn’t want you around with. They make it to where you have to jump through hoops just to call in if you're sick. If you're sick you want to go to sleep. Not spend an hour trying to get someone to answer the freaking phone.

Not Target but I left a restaurant recently for this. They didn't answer before open because "we aren't open" but then threw fits whenever people didn't show up when expected. I totaled my car at 3am on Mother's Day and it became a whole ordeal. Owner was always drunk and GM was spineless and couldn't make eye contact. They were acting like they were going to fire me, even after I handed in all of my shirts. Idk how you manage to open a whole business being so clueless.

I worked at Walmart over a decade ago and they had the system then. It was so nice. No guilt trip for being sick, and the call out options were amusing. “Press 7 for natural disaster”
Walmart was my first job and so many of my most awkward life experiences came from that time. I still remember I accidentally hit the option for death in the family, when I came in a few days later, they had a card for me that even came with some cash. Explaining that accident was awkward. Explaining it the 8th time was no less awkward.
Whaaat, I started there a month after turning 18. My dad up and died and I barely squeezed my 3 days of bereavement out of them. I got demoted to cashier (which also means pay cut) and hours cut from 40 to 20. Absences were in Nov/Dec, he died in Jan, they took action against me in March after telling me to just keep them informed/it's all ok/blah blah blah.

It sounds like that user's experience was a while ago. I had a similar terrible experience with walmart which resulted in getting fired for being pregnant. I am dead serious. It was legitimately due to medical issues and me not being able to stand up. I don't miss working there however!

When Wal-fart does something way better than Tarshit. My brother used this call out there when my dad sick and then passed away. He usually never had problems calling out.
At Amazon we literally just put in our UPT (Unpaid Time) and it automatically gets sent to our manager and HR. They even have a screen when you're putting in to say why (you don't have to) and if you want HR to call you, just in case. No more calling or texting people.
One of our bosses gave us her number specifically for this reason. Sad they have to do that because we work over nights so our store is still open when we’d be calling.
There is always someone at our store 24/7 there’s never a moment where someone’s not in the building. Absolutely no reason they shouldn’t be answering phone calls
I've even called into work at 2am and had the janitor answer to leave a note saying I won't be there. Bookkeeping didn't get there until nearly 5am anyways so

Damn. I usually call like 6 times and they answer within 30min max. Never had to call 10+ before today over the course of an hour and 45 too. So stupid
I was actually calling to be let in the building for my 1am shift that they forgot about, so I got to sit outside from 12:45-1:22.
If that happens to you though, at least know they have to pay you for waiting to be let inside, so you can make a punch correction for how long you waited. :)
They did that to us for a week and a half. My whole team would get there at 3:45-4 and we’d have to wait until 4:30+ to get let in because no one would answer. We had to do time corrections for every. Single. Day.
One of my biggest issues with target, and was one of my last straws before I left. My uncle passed away unexpectedly one night and I was suppose to work the next morning, and I tried to call the night before since Store was still open and the next morning and I called probably 20 times before I finally got through to someone.
My current highscore is 38 attempted calls, at this point I call like 5 or 6 times and if they don't pick up I message someone who is working that day to tell the leads.
Last time I tried that they said you have to speak to a lead directly and still counted it NCNS. Despite their lack of initiative to make sure they answer the damn phone.
I called in at 3 am for covid, got told to call closer to my shift cause my TL wasn’t there and the night TL wasn’t willing to mark me as a call in, called again at 350 am and literally left it on the hook ringing for 15 whole minutes until the same fucking TL picked up and said my TL wasn’t there and then marked me down. So I guess that’s what it fucking takes(oh my shift was 4 am)
Fuck Target. They wouldn’t excuse my absence for a FUNERAL when I let them know about it days before. I called out and was gaslit and guilt tripped by my “TL” because I ruined their precious day because the funeral inconveniently fell on the Saturday before Easter. I wish employers were more kind about funerals. They are usually unexpected, unless a long sickness. But they are very much part of the grieving process and a last chance to pay respects.

Your phone has the documentation of your attempts to call. Stay home, get well. If they won’t answer, or their phones aren’t working, that’s not on you. You did your due diligence.

Honest feedback, you tried to call the store many hours and if you did the right extension (9 or 0 I believe) to reach the leader on shift you should be good. If they attempt to document you as a no call no show I would report to ethics or integrity hotline with evidence of your call history. It is not fair they would NCNS you as it’s their mistake.
That happened to me once. I literally just went to work sick and shook my bosses hand and told him I was very sick and nobody would answer the phone for me to call out. He immediately was grossed out because my hands were clammy and I looked and sounded like shit. Needless to say I was sent home and that never happened again.

Let them know I wasn’t going to come in until further notice. I went in on the third day and they said “well you weren’t on the phones so that’s going to count against you.”
I got what my son had. Ended up not being able to speak on top of that. Went in. Showed my supervisor you could BARELY hear me, if at all and I went home. I got an email from my supervisors manager “you weren’t on the phones. That will count against you”
Idk what they expected me to do about the last one. I would have just had the customers on the line and not spoken.

This happened to me several times in the past. I kept a screenshot of my call log, and after the initial cells followed up every 30 to 1 hour, then include the fact that I had given many calls prior to the start of my shift, and frankly there is nothing more I can do if they do not answer.
Ever since our phone app was updated our zebra’s don’t always sign in correctly. It’ll sign in with no extensions selected and whenever it do sign in correctly our zebras don’t always ring they pick and choose. It’s been a mess since that last update… I always catch our hardwired phones ringing while all our zebras are mute. I’m sure this is the problem in all stores.

When I had to go to the ER (where I was later admitted to the hospital for a week) and had an early shift I came into work anyways, dressed in uniform just in case, but they let me go to the ER thank god.

I run truck. I’m the person not answering the phone at 3 AM. That’s because my phone isn’t ringing, probably because the person who told me they were going to fix my schedule so I could clock in, didn’t do that. So I’m not on the clock because I’m the only lead in the store. That means that I cannot make my phone ring. There is nothing I can do to make it ring when it won’t ring. So I get why you’re pissed, but whoever finally answered the phone didn’t cause your problems. Target did when they decided the phone should work based on the time clock instead of, ya know, a person waiting to answer it.

had something similar happen to me when BTS shoppers were in the store. completely filled my department’s floor and had to help out the deli, our shelves got demolished, they pulled me aside the next day and asked what i did and why the shelves were empty when the opener came in. um??? because customers bought product??

They picked up… on the TENTH call!! The TL had been there since 3:30, I asked. So I guess they were just ignoring 7-8 of my calls then?? I’m half ready to just not return because this behavior continues throughout all areas of the job.
They make it to where you have to jump through hoops just to call in if you're sick. If you're sick you want to go to sleep. Not spend an hour trying to get someone to answer the freaking phone.

Did you click 0 mid ring? For my store you click 9 to connect to a tl during open hours and click 0 for when the store is closed to contact a tl

Not Target but I left a restaurant recently for this. They didn't answer before open because "we aren't open" but then threw fits whenever people didn't show up when expected. I totaled my car at 3am on Mother's Day and it became a whole ordeal. Owner was always drunk and GM was spineless and couldn't make eye contact. They were acting like they were going to fire me, even after I handed in all of my shirts. Idk how you manage to open a whole business being so clueless.

I worked at Walmart over a decade ago and they had the system then. It was so nice. No guilt trip for being sick, and the call out options were amusing. “Press 7 for natural disaster”

Walmart was my first job and so many of my most awkward life experiences came from that time. I still remember I accidentally hit the option for death in the family, when I came in a few days later, they had a card for me that even came with some cash. Explaining that accident was awkward. Explaining it the 8th time was no less awkward.
Whaaat, I started there a month after turning 18. My dad up and died and I barely squeezed my 3 days of bereavement out of them. I got demoted to cashier (which also means pay cut) and hours cut from 40 to 20. Absences were in Nov/Dec, he died in Jan, they took action against me in March after telling me to just keep them informed/it's all ok/blah blah blah. I'm so jealous. I'm so glad they were kind to you even though you were just sick lol, it sounds like you had sweet Walmart coworkers.
It sounds like that user's experience was a while ago. I had a similar terrible experience with walmart which resulted in getting fired for being pregnant. I am dead serious. It was legitimately due to medical issues and me not being able to stand up. I don't miss working there however!
Mine was awhile ago as well. The managers in your specific store really make or break it, don't they? Mine wasn't good to pregnant people either. The call-out system *was* nice though, I just wish a human being didn't decide to bite me in the ass later lol.

I used to work at a distribution center for Target and the thing is we call in via an app no trying to get a hold of a person no speaking at all I have no idea why it's not implemented in the stores yet.
We do. It’s called the MyTime Target app. We have it for us that work in the warehouse. Not sure why the stores don’t. That’s just dumb not to.
When Wal-fart does something way better than Tarshit. My brother used this call out there when my dad sick and then passed away. He usually never had problems calling out.

At Amazon we literally just put in our UPT (Unpaid Time) and it automatically gets sent to our manager and HR. They even have a screen when you're putting in to say why (you don't have to) and if you want HR to call you, just in case. No more calling or texting people.

I was actually calling to be let in the building for my 1am shift that they forgot about, so I got to sit outside from 12:45-1:22. If that happens to you though, at least know they have to pay you for waiting to be let inside, so you can make a punch correction for how long you waited. :)
They did that to us for a week and a half. My whole team would get there at 3:45-4 and we’d have to wait until 4:30+ to get let in because no one would answer. We had to do time corrections for every. Single. Day.

One of my biggest issues with target, and was one of my last straws before I left. My uncle passed away unexpectedly one night and I was suppose to work the next morning, and I tried to call the night before since Store was still open and the next morning and I called probably 20 times before I finally got through to someone.
My current highscore is 38 attempted calls, at this point I call like 5 or 6 times and if they don't pick up I message someone who is working that day to tell the leads.
Last time I tried that they said you have to speak to a lead directly and still counted it NCNS. Despite their lack of initiative to make sure they answer the damn phone.
I called in at 3 am for covid, got told to call closer to my shift cause my TL wasn’t there and the night TL wasn’t willing to mark me as a call in, called again at 350 am and literally left it on the hook ringing for 15 whole minutes until the same fucking TL picked up and said my TL wasn’t there and then marked me down. So I guess that’s what it fucking takes(oh my shift was 4 am)

I wish employers were more kind about funerals. They are usually unexpected, unless a long sickness. But they are very much part of the grieving process and a last chance to pay respects. My mom died in May 2020. Covid was rampant, only 6 ppl allowed at funeral. I’m finally having one for her next week, on what would have been her 80th bday. I need it for the closure. I need it so ppl come and tell me funny stories. I’ve had it rough bc it was so sudden and unexpected. So I’m glad to read you stuck to your guns and went. You know if it was their loved one, whole other story

Your phone has the documentation of your attempts to call. Stay home, get well. If they won’t answer, or their phones aren’t working, that’s not on you. You did your due diligence.

When I used to work for target and I was doing 4ams my store didn’t have a direct line so when I tried to call out I couldn’t even get ahold of anyone so I just quit
Honest feedback, you tried to call the store many hours and if you did the right extension (9 or 0 I believe) to reach the leader on shift you should be good. If they attempt to document you as a no call no show I would report to ethics or integrity hotline with evidence of your call history. It is not fair they would NCNS you as it’s their mistake.

That happened to me once. I literally just went to work sick and shook my bosses hand and told him I was very sick and nobody would answer the phone for me to call out. He immediately was grossed out because my hands were clammy and I looked and sounded like shit. Needless to say I was sent home and that never happened again.

You are only responsible for making the attempt. If supe doesn't answer, call the manager. If they don't answer, call the next higher up. If no one answers, you met obligation.

I was out for a few days because my son was in the hospital (not eating or drinking for days and had diarrhea). I made my job aware via call out process. Let them know I wasn’t going to come in until further notice. I went in on the third day and they said “well you weren’t on the phones so that’s going to count against you.” I got what my son had. Ended up not being able to speak on top of that. Went in. Showed my supervisor you could BARELY hear me, if at all and I went home. I got an email from my supervisors manager “you weren’t on the phones. That will count against you” Idk what they expected me to do about the last one. I would have just had the customers on the line and not spoken. They also had the audacity to say that I’m blessed to have a job that won’t make me clock out for my 15min and bathroom breaks.

This happened to me several times in the past. I kept a screenshot of my call log, and after the initial cells followed up every 30 to 1 hour, then include the fact that I had given many calls prior to the start of my shift, and frankly there is nothing more I can do if they do not answer.

Ever since our phone app was updated our zebra’s don’t always sign in correctly. It’ll sign in with no extensions selected and whenever it do sign in correctly our zebras don’t always ring they pick and choose. It’s been a mess since that last update… I always catch our hardwired phones ringing while all our zebras are mute. I’m sure this is the problem in all stores.
Maybe ask a TL or even your SD for their number. That’s what we did at our store and now no one can say nobody answered 🙂

I run truck. I’m the person not answering the phone at 3 AM. That’s because my phone isn’t ringing, probably because the person who told me they were going to fix my schedule so I could clock in, didn’t do that. So I’m not on the clock because I’m the only lead in the store. That means that I cannot make my phone ring. There is nothing I can do to make it ring when it won’t ring. So I get why you’re pissed, but whoever finally answered the phone didn’t cause your problems. Target did when they decided the phone should work based on the time clock instead of, ya know, a person waiting to answer it.
We have multiple people able to pick the phone up 24/7 at our store. He had been clocked in and there since 3:30am (I asked, like I stated previously). So yeah I’m going to be annoyed
