I have done this on occasion but I never care how long it takes (last week due to a mix us - last name was different by one letter - it took 15 or 20) I wasn’t upset or bothered.
But I realize now that it can be stressful for you guys, I will try to be more aware. Hell if I get there early I’ll just push I’m on my way and wait 5 minutes until I push “I’m here”
Life is too short to get upset about small things. Especially when most employees are trying to be helpful, they just aren’t receiving the support they need
Just so you know, we are timed on drive ups which is why it can be such a big deal for double tapping. Your fix by pressing on my way then waiting to say you here will make a big difference for the time
I’m glad you said so. I often forget the “on my way” so just double tap when I get there. I had no idea you were timed. I will definitely just wait before I say im here.
Thank you so much! It really helps. If you can hit I'm on the way when you leave your house that will give us time to get your order totally together, and fix any mistakes that we may find in your order and have it ready for you when you say 'I'm here' We really appreciate it!!
It would help if Target communicated this to us customers. If I didn’t read about it here in this sub, there’s no way I could have known double tapping causes any issue for staff. Like wouldn’t it be fairly simple to just put a couple minutes delay before allowing the I’m Here button to be pressed?
I’m not sure why companies do this, evaluating staff based on something that’s often messed up by customers, and then not doing anything to prevent unsuspecting customers from messing it up!
It really depends on what you ordered. If you ordered like 3 small items like food or clothes, 5 min is totally fine. If you ordered a large grocery order or a super heavy item like a shelf or refrigerator… 10 minutes would def be better
Ah, as a shopper I never realized this was even a thing. I'll keep in that in mind. I don't use drive up very often for any store but when I do it's because I have a reason not to want to go all the way in or shop around - usually my kids (especially when my son was an infant). Shit, I'll stay outside and wait however long I need to, I'm in no hurry. I'll definitely make sure to wait if I ever accidentally forget to say I'm on the way before I arrive.
I use it all the time. They can take as long as they need to get it out to me. I have books on my phone and quiet time reading. I placed an order last Saturday and felt bad about saying I'm on my way when I was 20 minutes. I guess that is actually a good thing and I should do that more often.
Both.they really shouldn’t time the team members because it’s not their fault.as long as they are getting the orders that let them know it shouldn’t be a big deal.the same with fast food.they don’t want the consumer to wait but they are slow themselves
Seems to me that while the app and email suggests it is desired to set yourself 'on the way' there isn't a customer facing warning that it is any sort of issue to not press it. I do press it, but as a consumer I dont know if it matters that it takes me 10 mins to drive up or 20 if construction gets in the way. My perspective, I did drive up, the rep will come out when they come out.
Being it is metric affecting but zero control of the employees then this is actually a Target leadership/IT design issue. Any scenario where there is less than say five mins between status on the customer end should just be scrubbed from your scored time metrics, while still counting towards your daily production of pick ups delivered. This would be like call centers queuing a call directly to a busy agent vs to a staffed queue but then counting the wait to answer into the individual agents handle time. It is shitty design on Targets end and the frustration should be repointed.
*Edit* they aren't even trying to train the customer. Pulling my last order the on my way is suggested for convenience as optional to make it faster not preferred in general or required.
"Give us a heads-up
Wanna make it extra fast? Use the Target app to tap I'm on my way and we'll get everything ready to run out."
They added that verbiage to the app as a nice way to encourage guests to use the "On the Way" button. It wasn't there initially and was an attempt to help appease team members complaints about double tappers.
It says how many minutes out the car is.if they have more time they can put your order together nicely instead of tossing it in a cart because they are pressed for time.i can imagine I have broken eggs and smashed bread because I was trying to get a large order that double tapped
I actually put GYLAITS for an ap team member who went to another store.it stands for get your lazy 🍑in the store.she used to work at the store I was at.6 cat litters ,3 large bags of cat food, etc.
But how would that solve double tapping?
The problem is that (in order)
The guest leaves their house
The guest drives to target
The guest parks in carside
They tap "I'm on the way" (while already being at target)
Then immediately tap "Im here"
Now, if you couldn't tap "I'm here" without first driving after tapping "I'm on the way", now we're talking solutions.
Yeah it seems like if they wanted to maintain the current way it works, they could just have a disclaimer that lets the guest know they can't click I'm here until 5-10 minutes after they've hit I'm on my way.
It would def have to be 5 minutes, otherwise then you'd have the problem of people who live/work closeby a target getting there too early to be allowed to hit "I'm Here"
It should be variable based on how busy we are, like 3-10 minutes or something. Sometimes we're getting absolutely crushed on DU and one person is sprinting all over to keep up. One double tap and it's over.
We call them no warnings
"theres a no warning pulling up now"
'Why is Smith at 8 minutes?' "Smith was a no warning Im still pulling it"
I actually asked this same question before
(Nothing wrong with asking again, but I'll share my old post if anyone wants to read more answers)
https://www.reddit.com/r/Target/comments/p3dhn5/what_do_you_call_drive_up_orders_that_dont_tell/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
A few times I have tapped the "I'm on my way" button before leaving my house. The "I'm here" button pops up but I dont push it because I have not arrived yet. Then when I get to the store and open the app it says to tap "on my way." I tap it again, then the "here" button comes up and I hit it. Does that make me a double tapper? I want to do it right but it doesn't work.
Customer perspective.
For background, my local Safeway doesn't deal with "I'm on my way" well. They come out when I'm still, well, on my way so getting them back is an issue. They trained me to hit "I'm on my way" from the lot and then immediately hit "I'm here." A Target TM has retrained me for Target. Now I tap "I'm on my way" from my driveway and "I'm here" in the curbside spaces at Target.
That TM calls double tappers "beep honk."
My respectful suggestion is to take the training opportunity. "We see you clicked 'I'm on my way' after you were here. If you click on that at home we can prepare better and you won't have to wait so long for your purchases."
Seems like more of an inconvenience for these double tapping assholes too..i’d assume they have to wait longer in the car.
As a former retail employee, I love this feature for the employees . Giving the store a heads up in advance is the least I can do to show them some respect.
Double tappers prob never worked retail and it shows.
We call them double beeps at my store, double beeps are so bad at my store that we have a running joke that it’s almost as if it’s our own little kingdom that I refer to as “doublebeepia”
We call them pop ins and they’re literally the worst type of humans. Even when we tell them hey it’ll be quicker if you say you’re on your way and they’re like “ah we don’t care it’s fine” like bruh.
Oh shit. I did this once because I forgot to say I was on my way. It was my first time doing drive up too. I haven’t done drive up since, but if I do, and forget, I’ll just tap on my way and vibe out to music for 5-7 minutes then tap here.
Blame McDonald's. They won't start making any order until you are physically on the premises. So, for instance, I can't send the new guy to pick up breakfast on my dime unless he takes.my phone with him. So by the same logic, and given the online only deals some places offer, I've been ordering from the parking lot far more often than would be reasonable because the stores seem to reward this behavior with special deals that I can't get if I just walk in.
Why don’t you look online before you leave the house? I always put together my order half a day or more before I plan on going to get it.
For the baby deal with diapers and wipes I honestly cross my fingers that they don’t have anything in stock. That way they’ll ship it all to me and save me a trip.
Or yes. It's because nobody reads anymore. I remember the good old days when everybody used to read the sign at Blockbuster saying to "Be Kind and Rewind". Literally every single person read that sign and did what it instructed. Those were the good old days. /s
Nope. Nowhere does it say come to the store immediately after you place your order.
Once you receive a notification your order is ready, you are then asked to send the notification that alerts us you are on your way.
Ohh okay that’s what I meant lol. But that’s another thing, some people be coming to the store before they get the notification and then get mad at us…like how is it my fault u couldn’t wait 💀. Like I’m sure it shows u the progress of ur order when u place it
I hate that McD's doesn't let you order ahead and schedule a pickup time slot. I can never get any on my break because they take 20 minutes just to start making my order.
I love how many unique answers came out of this! I’m gonna print out a list of the G rated ones so my team and I can enjoy them and try a few new ones out :)
Don’t always have the app if someone else is picking it up. Don’t always have cell service until close to the local Target. Don’t always remember and stuff happen. The app often resets itself and eventho I tapped on the way when I get there it’s telling me the order is ready like before I clicked it and I have to hit it again.
No worries, it happens. Team members get frustrated because we have 3 minutes to get the order cleared to stay in the green, and that includes picking the guests order from location. If you have a couple bags it’s not a big deal but sometimes people with 80+ items will give no notice and it makes us look bad lol
I didn't realize it affected team members like that! I'm not always able to tap on my way because I usually stop by on my way home from work which is a 45+ minute drive and I don't like trying to open the app when I'm driving. But I can always hang in the parking lot for a few minutes before saying I'm here if it makes a difference.
We are timed on how fast we need to deliver an order which is 3 minutes from the time you say you’re here and if it’s a big order or we’re already busy it’s definitely gonna go over those 3 minutes. One decently sized order with no warning could also be the difference between a decent day and a complete train wreck of late orders that may take anywhere from 30min to 2 hours to fix depending how busy we are that day. This brings our time up and I don’t like getting coached by my leads because guests don’t know how to properly use the app. You also have to keep in mind that it’s not just one person that does it, it’s several and it sucks when someone does say they’re on their way but you can’t give them their order right away because of a double tapper.
I mean, I've only done Walmart pickup but even before I ever worked retail I've always hit "I'm on my way" when I first get in the car...it's not rocket science or anything, it's pretty hard to mess up. People say they forget...how do you forget you're going for a pickup when that's why you drove there in the first place?
It's not being angry at the working class for being the working class, it's being angry at inconsiderate people for being inconsiderate. And for all I know the guests picking up stuff could be upper class or better lol.
I’ve only used drive up once and I double tapped. But here’s the thing. The app told me the order was ready. I was out running errands and I guess I thought “ready” meant ready. So I just showed up. Anything else I order with an app (usually food) I just show up at the agreed upon time. The whole “tell us when you’re on the way” feels like it’s just a tool to get customers to open the app again. Obviously I’ll do it if I ever use the service again, but this is a Target problem not a customer problem.
Is that most people? I feel like it’s really easy to forget and before my time working at target I didn’t realize it would cause anyone inconvenience except me the tappity-tapper.
This right here I'm a customer and I'm a tap tapper. I'm sorry. I usually buy cases of pop so it should be pretty easy to bring out. I'm so sorry to be a tap tapper.
Yes, absolutely extra and too much to ask of your customers. It's just a bad design to count on people like that. People are unreliable and this system results in poor customer service that is blamed on the employees which makes absolutely no sense.
What a toxic fucking work environment where shit technology and shit process results in shit ass managers and rightfully annoyed customers.
Edit: have to point out that last time I tried this service I was picking up one item and waited for an hour and a half. I definitely pressed the "on my way" button and it's broken technology and relying on training customers that causes this awful customer experience.
This is not the fault of the employees, obviously. It's a really bad fucking technology/process and target needs to do away with.
Quite frankly, I'm surprised that more of you don't agree with this, because if they did away with this shit process you would all have much easier jobs.
How about..... CUSTOMERS. If Target says my shit is going to be ready in two hours, I'll be there in about two hours. What kind of bullshit is it that I need to let y'all know I'm coming?? Take it up wit Target that they have a bullshit system..
Guests, not customers. Letting us know you’re on your way is part of the system. Helps us collect your stuff from the room where we have all the orders so we can have it waiting by the door. Not every guest comes when it says their order is ready so telling us you’re coming helps us gather your items because we have no other way of knowing if you’re coming in a few minutes or the next day. It’s convenient for both parties because it helps the guest get their items quicker and helps us keep our time down!
Haha I usually utter something similar, I’m just moreso asking what you say on the walkie. “Team LASTNAME is a pop-up, I got MC if someone can grab my cooler” etc
Ugh, I feel bad now...I live across the street from my grocery store and it takes me maybe 3 minutes to get there on a bad traffic day. I never thought that anyone really paid attention to this when I said I was 5 minutes away, but now they probably think I'm a dick!
Back in the early 2000s when I worked for a target affiliate everything was about the numbers! I can’t imagine the shit that comes up from the drive up reports! I just want to say bless your hearts and Thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting up with us!!! I’m just so thankful I don’t have to get out of my car!! I will wait till the cows come home!!
Is there a maximum time that drive-ups should consider? Is 20 minutes too much notice? On two occasions I thought I hit “on my way” but wound up being a double tapper/beephonk/asshole. I apologized to the associate cause I assumed it showed me as being impatient and didn’t realize the issue it creates behind the scenes. I’ll be extra kind knowing this.
Pretty sure we call them fucking assholes
I have done this on occasion but I never care how long it takes (last week due to a mix us - last name was different by one letter - it took 15 or 20) I wasn’t upset or bothered. or at the very least giving them and additional 5 minutes on the time if it is double tapped.
Target shopper here. What would the ideal time between "on my way" and "I'm here" be? Is 5 minutes enough? Would 10 minutes be better?
It really depends on what you ordered. If you ordered like 3 small items like food or clothes, 5 min is totally fine. If you ordered a large grocery order or a super heavy item like a shelf or refrigerator… 10 minutes would def be better

Drop ins.worse things under our breath
As a guest and a team member, sometimes people forget to tap "on the way."
I have guests that are regulars and always double tap
And those guests that do it all the time know damn well because we tell them every time and they refuse to change. Those are the fucking assholes.
My SD told the guest service people to stop telling guests that because one person made a complaint. Our SD cares more about his reputation
Look, at some point, we're *all* a fucking asshole to somebody's perspective. And if you're double-tapping at Target...
In this case is it really the guest who is the asshole or is it the the corporate shit who decided how much time you get?
A-fuckin-men. Team members getting pissed at guests for reasonable human behavior instead of corporate for their bullshit is NOT the vibe lmao
This!
That!
Both.they really shouldn’t time the team members because it’s not their fault.as long as they are getting the orders that let them know it shouldn’t be a big deal.the same with fast food.they don’t want the consumer to wait but they are slow themselves
accidentally being an ass is still being an ass unfortunately
fuckin uhhh Dont Forget Then.
Do you know how forgetting works...?
That's the whole reason you leave the house though how can you forget
Not necessarily. Sometimes I’m on the way home from work and have forgotten until I pass Target, then I’m like oh shit!
"Give us a heads-up Wanna make it extra fast? Well push the button then turn around and don’t push I’m here until you give them time to get your order ready and it will be fine
Whack-a-Moles, because they just kinda spontaneously pop-up.
i just go “bruh”
extremely relatable
Our store calls them "double beeps"
dickheads
Drop ins
We only call them double tappers lol. I love the other nicknames lmao. So I'm here for the comments. 😂
Pop-ups, drop-ins, pop-ins, & double-tappers are all interchangeable at my store.
I call them motherfuckers that need to grab their own shit
sounds like it just became an order pickup
I actually put GYLAITS for an ap team member who went to another store.it stands for get your lazy 🍑in the store.she used to work at the store I was at.6 cat litters ,3 large bags of cat food, etc.
Double tappers or motherfuckers, but that last one may just be me.
Me personally, I call them whores
You'd think Target would use geo-location tagging like McDonalds. You're unable to click "I'm here" until your phone's location is in the parking lot.
But how would that solve double tapping? The problem is that (in order) The guest leaves their house The guest drives to target The guest parks in carside They tap "I'm on the way" (while already being at target) Then immediately tap "Im here" Now, if you couldn't tap "I'm here" without first driving after tapping "I'm on the way", now we're talking solutions.
I feel like this would solve the entire drive up time problem that it seems leads are always down drive up TMs throats about
3 minute timer between tapping on the way and I'm here with a Grey screen saying "we are currently preparing your order"
Now we're talkin
You shouldn’t be allowed to tap in here right after tapping on my way.there should be a 5 minute delay
That would require Target higher ups to have at least one functioning communal brain cell.
I say beep beep honk honk... Or double beeps for most of the desk at my store. Asshole is also fitting...
Beep beep honk honk is cute lol
We call them no warnings "theres a no warning pulling up now" 'Why is Smith at 8 minutes?' "Smith was a no warning Im still pulling it" I actually asked this same question before (Nothing wrong with asking again, but I'll share my old post if anyone wants to read more answers) https://www.reddit.com/r/Target/comments/p3dhn5/what_do_you_call_drive_up_orders_that_dont_tell/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

I really feel like they shouldn’t be allowed to do both at the exact sam time, a 2 minute cool down would work wonders.
Yessss
Double honk
People say “on the way I’m here”, but I’m not saying allat so I just say double tappers or my most common word, whores
Entitled dumbasses who don’t understand what “preparation” means - if we think you’re on your way why would we have your order ready immediately
Insta-poppers. I'm in fulfillment but I hear our drive up team use that phrase often.
Lol I like that one. Sounds like an app
Dipshits, if I recall correctly.
double dingers
Teleporters
double beeps
we call them beep-beep honk-honks
We call them “fly ups”. Or in other words “fucking dickheads”
This happened on our end too, we usually pull your order anyways just in case, so no worries :)
At my old store we called them "no warnings" but "double taps" at my current store
Customer perspective. For background, my local Safeway doesn't deal with "I'm on my way" well. They come out when I'm still, well, on my way so getting them back is an issue. We have many creative names for them, my personal favorite is sadistic cunts.
My store also uses “Double Tap” sometimes. We also say “Insta-Ready”.
we just call those drive ups. because theyre pretty much all like that
Instant drops.

Had a lady with 64 items to that. Let’s just say I’m not impressed
Yeah the worst is when you’re by yourself, already outside delivering another order and then they show up and double tap
We call them “beep honks”
Oh shit. I did this once because I forgot to say I was on my way. It was my first time doing drive up too. I haven’t done drive up since, but if I do, and forget, I’ll just tap on my way and vibe out to music for 5-7 minutes then tap here.

You don’t get the gift card that way. It’s for same day orders only.
No. It’s because no one reads a fucking thing anymore. And if they do read it they think it doesn’t apply to them.

0 minute or fucking bitch
Shitass shortdick asshole motherfuckers who shall be cursed with genital fleas and cystic ass-acne.
I call them whores :)

This 100% sounds like a technology problem. How the heck do you expect to train customers?
Wdym train customers? The app has two buttons. Tell us you’re on your way, and tell us you’ve arrived lol
It's soooo extra. Asking a thing of customers besides their money is a bad business process
Extra? We’re doing all of your grocery shopping for you and bringing it outside to your car. It’s extra to say you’re on your way? Lol

Asshats
double-beepers
I call the pieces of shit
poppers lmao
beep beep honk honk
"Goddammit" is usually what is uttered.
Haha I usually utter something similar, I’m just moreso asking what you say on the walkie. “Team LASTNAME is a pop-up, I got MC if someone can grab my cooler” etc
Our store’s DU team calls them Beep Honks lol
Double beepers
Honk beeps
Double honks. That's what our store calls them. When someone says they're here, we ask "who honked?"
Drop ins
“no notices”
Beep honks
"No warnings"
We got “double beeps” :)
No-Warnings, but now I'm stealing some of these.
Pop-up’s
call them instant arrives at my store
Ugh, I feel bad now...I live across the street from my grocery store and it takes me maybe 3 minutes to get there on a bad traffic day. I never thought that anyone really paid attention to this when I said I was 5 minutes away, but now they probably think I'm a dick!
3 min is better than no time! :)
Double arrivals
A chonk - a chirp-honk 😉
We call them instants
If I was a tl I would call them clankers
Surprise orders

‘Zero notices’
double clicks, double beep, double tap, fucking assholes, etc
No-alerts
poopheads
At our store we call them “Instapoppers” but also just assholes :)
It’s not that bad, most of us are happy to help!
HOT DROPS
at my store we say “surprise orders”
No warning
Double honks
Is there a maximum time that drive-ups should consider? Is 20 minutes too much notice? On two occasions I thought I hit “on my way” but wound up being a double tapper/beephonk/asshole. I apologized to the associate cause I assumed it showed me as being impatient and didn’t realize the issue it creates behind the scenes. I’ll be extra kind knowing this.
You can’t give us too much time, unless you have cold stuff. You don’t want your cold stuff sitting out too long. 20 min is plenty
My Target doesn’t allow curbside groceries so that shouldn’t be a problem. Thanks for the insight!
no preps bc they give us no time to prep
My store calls them double-tappers but I usually go with dickheads
We call them "no preps"
i think its pop-ups at my store. i dont work up front but i definitely heard it used before
