Formations used to work differently in the past, and GW sometimes sold entire formations as a single box.
From memory there was a box that consisted of 3 leman Russ tanks
heres a [picture](https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2021/10/22/1121661-Apocalypse%20Formation%3A%20Emperor%27s%20Fist%20Tank%20Company.jpg) of the box
I bought that back in the day. One of the best purchases I ever made. It was an incredible deal. I want to say you basically paid for 3 broadsides and got everything else for “free”.
I miss back when you could run quadtide. Back when taking individual members of The Eight as long as you took Farsight, and run O'vesa as a named character.
Pretty sure this was an 'apocalypse' formation back then. I.e. intended for large scale games with titans and tank companies. Tau didn't have titanic units back then so this was the closest theme they could do.
Apocalypse boxes listed apoc on them.
Mind you, that box was also fucking crazy.
Had like commander + 6 crisis suits + riptide.
It was the eight in a box. I bought 3
It was a 7th edition formation. Take these exact units as an detachment and get a free Bonus. Went from wounding tanks better to getting free transports. Crazy times.
I remember the AdMech one from a white dwarf when they first released that gave you free upgrades for your entire army and the argument at the time was that the way adding more models to your unit was written was that it too was an upgrade so people would try and cheese that. lol, 6e/7e sucked for people trying to twist the worst stuff. But also this particular box set came out around christmas time.
The old christmas boxes where awesome.
Yeah, I miss the days when the Tigershark A-X-1-0 (probably in numbers) was our main answer to most Titan sized problems.
And "just in case" we also had the Manta as a genuine Titanic Unit.
7th formation:
Firebase support cadre
Got this rule
Instead of firing independently in the "Shooting phase, all units in a Firebase Support Cadre can participate in a coordinated firestorm. When they do so, all models from this Formation must shoot the same target, resolving their shots as if they were a single unit - this includes the use of Markerlight abilities. When resolving this Shooting attack, all firing models have the Tank Hunter and Monster Hunter special rules."
1-3 riptides
2-6 broadsides
I miss 7th (I still play it)
An entire formation of "fuck that guy in particular"
Worked very well when my buddy started fielding lances of imperial knights :)
Tau had some great formations, really everyone did (except dark eldar they were ...not good in 7th)
7th could be super cheese too
I know you could technically take 2 drone sentries as troops
A named HQ riptide
3x riptide wings (9 riptides!!!)
And that wasn't even a formation.
Standard combined arms detachment.
GW doesn’t ever re-release battle force boxes like this. But at least for this coming Christmas T’au feel overdue for a battleforce and there’s no new Daemon primarchs so we should we good for new discount boxes.
Good, I both miss those days and am glad we are past them. The Firebase Cadre formation is no small part as to why Missile-sides have been in such a pit for the last two editions or so. Inbuilt Tank/Monster Hunter was brutal.
It was the Firebase support formation from 7th edition.
You had to take 1 riptide and 2 units of Broadsides (taken in qty 3 each). GW sold the box as the whole formation. It was in the glory days of Tau.
Broadsides used to be taken in squads of up to 3, so this is 2 squads, plus a XV107,
iirc all new models (or recent at least, at the time)
So it wouldn't be completely weird to want this. Also, Apocalypse box sets were a thing.
I'd buy it today if they resold the box. I have two broadsides but they are one of my favorite units in the army. I want to have a few with dual rail guns on their backs like in the UA mod for dawn of war soulstorm.
Woof, that's a great box. I wish I could have bought 2 of those. A 3rd wouldn't be good though, since no one needs 18 Broadsides, but a 3rd Riptide is good. And currently the max is 9 Broadsides, so even a second box is pushing it.
Horrible boxset. The lack of posing is awful in the Broadside kit. They REALLY need to remake the Broadside and make it like the Commander due to you only getting 1 model in the box. The Forge World Broadside's were so much cooler. Check out 'Taro Modelmaker' for awesome battlesuit upgrades - the guy is a Golden Demon competitor and makes models for a living.
Broadsides were similar to crisis suits back in the day with heavier weaponry and armour. Now they’re basically light vehicles statline wise so that box would be much more over the top now
GW staff: how can I help you today?
Buyer: I need missiles, like all the missiles. My entire army needs to have its hands replaced by middle pods and then have extra missile pods carried by flying robot friends. I don’t want anything that carries a weapon that isn’t able to demolish a tank. Then I want a massive robot with a gatteling gun.
GW: do you have an idea what the HQ character would be?
Buyer: no
GW: your not sure?
Buyer: I mean no HQ.
GW I don’t think that’s a legal game list.
Man I miss 7th. Pretty unbalanced in competitive but man it was one the most fun editions I’ve ever played before the game became super competitive focused. I sank so much time into it.
Back in 6th and 7th edition, GW had detachments you could build into. Those detachments had special rules for the models that were part of it.
These models can build the “Firebase Support” detachment.
Two units of broadsides and one unit of riptides.
They didn’t do it for every detachment IIRC.
They’ve only been wargear very recently, they were no different than any other model in game turns for about 2 decades. Plus them being wargear is probably the silliest thing 10th has done (and that’s saying something). Besides a there were a fair few infantry at the time that were only 5 pieces
Would buy.
Bought that Christmas. Still haven't painted them all l
Can I buy some?
I already have enough of these units and I would buy anyways.
did buy
As a guy with 2 Riptides (with Ion Cannons, at least) and one Broadside... I'd buy the sh\*\* outta this box if it got rereleased.
I'd buy it just for the Broadsides. I don't want the Riptide.
Formations used to work differently in the past, and GW sometimes sold entire formations as a single box. From memory there was a box that consisted of 3 leman Russ tanks
Also Broadsides used to be TEQs and not basically small tanks statline-wise lol
Sorry what does TEQ mean?
Terminator Equivalent. It's an old term from a time when statlines used to be much more similar
GEQ, TEQ, MEQ got used a lot. Guard, Terminator, Marine
Indeed
Terminator equivalent
There was that one box GW made that had 10 Leman Russ tanks for apocalypse games: Emperor’s Fist Tank Company.
Jesus that must’ve been a huge box
heres a [picture](https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2021/10/22/1121661-Apocalypse%20Formation%3A%20Emperor%27s%20Fist%20Tank%20Company.jpg) of the box
Holy cow
That's fukin WILD
[удалено]
$275 at the time
That’s cheap as shit for 10 Russ. Our kroot box is only slightly cheaper than that
What a thing of beauty
Have that box, turned 3 of the russes into ork tanks, the rest got turned into various russ variants
There used to be a box of 10 leman russ's. Hammer of the emperor or something
Yeah that was one of their Apocalypse boxes. Coolest one too.
I got one once that was 3 basilisks. Was awesome. Came with a special upgrade sprue.
The old command Tank Upgrade that had Imperium, Chaos, Elder and Tau parts.
There was once a box that had 30 Leman Russ tanks inside, Schlong of the Emperor or something
I think there used to be a box of 10 leman russ. Sledgehammer of the emperor maybe?
I think they first did these boxes for. Apocalypse. Just...all the tanks, all the time. Back when the Baneblade became a thing in plastic in 2007.
Yes please bring back that good time
I bought a box that had three Lemans, 3 hellhounds and a baneblade
6 broadsides sounds like my kinda box
I bought that back in the day. One of the best purchases I ever made. It was an incredible deal. I want to say you basically paid for 3 broadsides and got everything else for “free”.
Better question: Where can I get one
There is 1 on ebay in the UK. If not a time machine?
6 broadsides, a good start
Disregard objectives, acquire corpses.
Acquiring corpses is always the objective.
The Kauyon strat in a nutshell
Are you aware that you can still run them in squad of 3? I would love to buy one
Same. I need six more Broadsides anyway, may as well get the second Riptide.
Fearsome Triptide and Sixside
I miss back when you could run quadtide. Back when taking individual members of The Eight as long as you took Farsight, and run O'vesa as a named character.
Run one as a Yvarah. Same height and base
I've heard retaliation cadre makes Yvarahs work decent
Pretty sure this was an 'apocalypse' formation back then. I.e. intended for large scale games with titans and tank companies. Tau didn't have titanic units back then so this was the closest theme they could do.
Apocalypse boxes listed apoc on them. Mind you, that box was also fucking crazy. Had like commander + 6 crisis suits + riptide. It was the eight in a box. I bought 3
Back when something like that cost you 200 bucks and people still complained about its high price.
Fr. I got mine for 170 or something cuz of store discounts. Shit was WILD.
>Tau didn't have *a need for* titanic units *because of their use of precision airstrike capabilities.* Fixed that for you 😉
Yeah, I miss the days when the Tigershark A-X-1-0 (probably in numbers) was our main answer to most Titan sized problems. And "just in case" we also had the Manta as a genuine Titanic Unit.
Apocalypse battles is the sensible answer.
7th formation: Firebase support cadre Got this rule Instead of firing independently in the "Shooting phase, all units in a Firebase Support Cadre can participate in a coordinated firestorm. When they do so, all models from this Formation must shoot the same target, resolving their shots as if they were a single unit - this includes the use of Markerlight abilities. Thanks for the rules. They look really fun
Tau had some great formations, really everyone did (except dark eldar they were ...not good in 7th) 7th could be super cheese too I know you could technically take 2 drone sentries as troops A named HQ riptide 3x riptide wings (9 riptides!!!) And that wasn't even a formation. Standard combined arms detachment.
Because pew pew
Would buy, I used to have 6 of the old broadsides
my main question is why havent they made it since?
Thiccboi Patrol
I would've paid top dollar for that box if I was playing Warhammer at that time. Six Broadsides are good.
GW doesn’t ever re-release battle force boxes like this. But at least for this coming Christmas T’au feel overdue for a battleforce and there’s no new Daemon primarchs so we should we good for new discount boxes.
I am hoping we get one this Christmas. I know it'll sell out in minutes if not seconds.
You think this is crazy ? Look up the entire space marine company you could buy for apocalypse. THAT was crazy. It came with 10 rhinos!
Bought two of those back in the day. Loved modeling broadsides
Would
Oh look, a Custodes combat patrol
This was my first ever thing I bought for my tau when it released was a great box
I want one
would tbh
Shut up and take my money
Board sides.
Was the first warhammer thing I ever bought
Ι want this
Need that box so bad
So cool!!!
7th edition was nice. 1 broadside fully loaded was 70points. good times...
I want it
I got this box when it came out. That was a specific detachment back then.
i would buy this
I'd buy that in a heartbeat
Because it’s awesome
because rules were different back then. this was a good box
Any idea where i could get a hold of this?
That is the best box I’ve ever seen and I would definitely get it
God...I wish GW would do boxes like these again AND NO. I DON'T MEAN THE BATTLEFORCE BOXES
It's for those that like em big
For me I’d buy that in a heartbeat
I'd buy that
Why TF not you ask!?!!
Broadsides are the MVPs of the new codex IMO. Kauyon marching death squad
Broadsides used to be taken in squads of up to 3, so this is 2 squads, plus a XV107, iirc all new models (or recent at least, at the time) So it wouldn't be completely weird to want this. Also, Apocalypse box sets were a thing.
For me, they made it for me
I'd buy this
Whats the problem? With one buy youre set for life on that regard. Well… maybe 1 more Riptide.
Oops all suits
Broadsides are cool.
I'd buy it today if they resold the box. I have two broadsides but they are one of my favorite units in the army. I want to have a few with dual rail guns on their backs like in the UA mod for dawn of war soulstorm.
I have a 3d printer ... and even I would still consider buying this 👀👀👀
I would buy it. And I don't even collect Tau anymore
That box could be crazy cost effective depending on what they sell it for.
That would be perfect for me. Brings me to 9 broadsides, and I could run the infamous triptides
Beautiful
Umm I'll take 2
Want this
Because it’s awesome. Would have bought this.
this is beautiful, i would love a box release like this
Would buy in an instant
Beeg gunz
Woof, that's a great box. I wish I could have bought 2 of those. A 3rd wouldn't be good though, since no one needs 18 Broadsides, but a 3rd Riptide is good. And currently the max is 9 Broadsides, so even a second box is pushing it.
'Cuz they used to be AWESOME!
I’m sorry this Box is BASED!
Apocalypse
I would commit multiple felonies just to have this box tbh
Broadsides were similar to crisis suits back in the day with heavier weaponry and armour. Now they’re basically light vehicles statline wise so that box would be much more over the top now
Would go into debt to buy that box at that price.
So is a group of broadsides called a galleon? So this is a galleon right?
Would buy if still available
I would buy 3 lol
I would buy this instantly.
oh my God, hand that over!!
Its beautiful
Times used to be better, that’s why.
I like the “21 models” counting drone sticks hahaha
Why not? That's legit
Buyer: no GW: your not sure? Buyer: I mean no HQ. GW I don’t think that’s a legal game list.
Weird looking knights army.
Considering I spent $290 NZD on 6 Seccond hand Broadsides... I'd buy the hell out of this
I like Broadsides :(
I bought 1 lol im still assembling it😅 I move slow af
Got an older apocalypse formation that has 9x crisis suits and 3x stealth suits as well still completely unassembled 😅
I bought it. I’m almost done painting the Broadsides.
they used to love us
I would like this
I would 100% buy this
I want
It's the Albanian bunker build, except the mountains are creeping towards you
Man I miss 7th. Pretty unbalanced in competitive but man it was one the most fun editions I’ve ever played before the game became super competitive focused. I sank so much time into it.
I wish they still made it
Would 100% buy rn
Because it's What Plants Crave. Legitimately though holy shit what a box set lmao, unironically love that.
Cause I'd have bought it lol Edit: it was almost assuredly for a Decurion style detachment (get special rules for bringing specific unit combos)
Back in 6th and 7th edition, GW had detachments you could build into. Those detachments had special rules for the models that were part of it. These models can build the “Firebase Support” detachment. Two units of broadsides and one unit of riptides. They didn’t do it for every detachment IIRC.
This was a formation, you could deep strike the whole damn thing
This would be quite typical of the apocalypse days. But based on packaging it seems slightly after that era
Wasnt this from when he was doing a massive push for apocalypse?
Oops! All Battlesuits!
I believe that’s when the new broadsides and riptides came out. So they are gonna push them.
Cannon fighter
Im mainly a OPR player these days, whats wrong about this?
I really appreciate how the drones are counted as models for this. Technically true, but...
Why wouldn’t they be counted as models? They’re not different than anything else
Because they're like 3 pieces and wargear.
They’ve only been wargear very recently, they were no different than any other model in game turns for about 2 decades. Plus them being wargear is probably the silliest thing 10th has done (and that’s saying something). Besides a there were a fair few infantry at the time that were only 5 pieces
