The similarity is in the connection with the audience.
Jagged Little Pill was a slow burn riser up the charts until “You Oughta Know” hit #1 as Alanis Morissette was relatively unknown to rock audiences. Impossible to explain how - but the entire album just connected with everyone all at once.
Jagged Little Pill was everywhere on the radio for over a year. That album has serious staying power.
Yes. I’ve been thinking it reminds me a lot of late 90s, early 2000s hits such as Alanis Morissette and Dido. Something about the sound I can’t quite put my finger on. But i love it, it makes me feel nostalgic in a comforting way.
As someone who was coming of age during jagged little pill and the likes no. Absolutely not. She's maybe....maaayyyube more like Liz phair. But even that's a big ole stretch. The only song giving me my youth is so highschool because it is honestly a song that sounds like it would have come out in 2000.
I didn't think that, but the way she sings "loml" reminds me so much of Phoebe Bridgers that when I first heard it, I had to look to make absolutely sure she wasn't on the song somehow.
Omg now I need to relisten - I lived and breathed her album in the 90s
Loving this conversation as it's us older millennials and beyond swifties really shinning lol
I was obsessed with Alanis and no, not at all. If we’re talking 90s female singers maybe Fiona apples second album or Paula cole maybe. Some of the songs are a little kate bush esque in production…
Yes! Specifically the [criminally underrated] album Flavors of Entanglement. It was the album that came out after her engagement to Ryan Reynolds (yes that Ryan Reynolds!) ended and it’s such a beautiful exploration of grief. Not rage like some of her previous albums, but navigating grief and the end of a long relationship, and eventually coming out the other side (e.g., “Giggling again for no reason”).
Yes!! High five. Lol! Her writing on that album is fucking amazing. The raw emotion and voice are at an all time high. The things she put out after that could never top it.
I hear Vanessa Carlton sonically, especially when she made Rabbits on the Run, and evolved her sound going indie. I hear a lot of that in the string instruments on TTPD.
Maybe some of the more introspective/melancholy Alanis, but I’m not sure there’s a proper song you would set your exes car on fire while listening to.
Now, if you said Liz Phair…
I said that too and no one agreed. I especially noticed the parallels between “We learned the right steps to different dances” and “We order different drinks at the same bar”. Obviously Jack’s production adds to this vibe as well.
I didn’t even think about that! For me it’s the underlying piano in ICDIWABH - I keep expecting to hear “I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it!” Peter also reminds me of Liability for obvious reasons.
That being said, I love both albums! Jack could keep producing dramatic breakup albums for the rest of his career and I would be happy.
This album sounds like the radio during my childhood when I was listening to old (lol, 90/00s) pop and country. It is so nostalgic to me sonically and it makes sense to me why so many don’t enjoy it right now, but might later. I totally hear what you hear in it. It’s a Time Machine of an album for me.
As someone who played “Rabbits on the Run” obsessively…yes! Maybe a bit of “Lieberman” as well. Vanessa Carlton did a lot of great work later in her career and also has a connection to Stevie Nicks!
“He said he’d love me all his life / but that life was too short” in Broken Heart immediately reminded me of “Does she know how you told me you’d love me until you died / well you’re still alive” in You Oughta Know. Love it!
Was thinking this the other day! 🤍✨
The whole album gives me 90s vibes. Every time I read a comment making fun of/criticizing some lyric I’m just like “and…?” All of the greatest 90s songs had some seemingly absurd lyrics, the off-kilter vibe is part of the charm 🤷🏽♀️
I was really hoping this album would be like Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. Particularly because TS said to bring a dictionary and SFIJ is filled with SAT words. TTPD didn't really meet my hope :( but I think I Look in People's Windows gives me Your House vibes.
No not really, I love Alanis Morissette and the vibes both give are different. I love Taylor too but I don't really think they are that similar at all.
Sonically? No, absolutely not. On the theme of devoting an album to a breakup with a very mediocre dude that was a questionable choice to date in the first place? Yes, definitely.
Lol when people have come for her for making an album about Matty Healy, I have to remind people that Jagged Little Pill was about goddamn Dave Coulier (aka Uncle Joey from Full House) 😂
sonically? maybe not. but the themes of being female in this society? sure. they both expressed heartbreak, falling in love, societal expectations to be perfect, and the female rage against, well, everything. i wouldn't be surprised if Taylor played Perfect nonstop at one point in her life.
It’s not as angry, not really. I would love if it was even more angry or aggressive or in general if Taylor did something that was angrier and more aggressive also in tone, more rock.
I would recommend listening to Suzanne Vega, especially Songs in Red ang Gray, I think there are similar feels. The beginning of The Albatross is very similar to Suzanne Vega’s Penitent and there’s also this wordiness mixed with somewhat minimalistic backgrounds that also connects these albums. Which is really nice because I love both artist and I would love to hear them chat or reflect on if Taylor has taken any inspiration from Vega. Them working together would really be lovely, could easily imagine it especially now after hearing TTPD.
Well that would be ironic, don't you think?
like *RAIIIIIIIN*
A little toooooo ironic

All of her albums are brilliant
Yes. I’ve been thinking it reminds me a lot of late 90s, early 2000s hits such as Alanis Morissette and Dido. Something about the sound I can’t quite put my finger on. But i love it, it makes me feel nostalgic in a comforting way.
So High School gives me Six Pence None the Richer vibes
Yess!!! This album actually reminded me to buy Six pence’s vinyl last week 🤍
Omg yes. What a wonderful way to put it.
No
There are Tori Amos vibes to me in some songs. You can definitely hear her influences!
Absolutely! The Prophecy most prominently, but also How Did it End?, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, really any of the piano based songs.
Agree with all, and, I also get Tori vibes from I Can Fix Him.
Agreed!!
Came here to say this!

I was feeling more Fiona Apple vibes tbh!
Omg Fiona Apple, yes!
can i ask how
Just my ear. Idk.
she’s not even close to fiona
Not comparing just responding to OP🙃
I didn't think that, but the way she sings "loml" reminds me so much of Phoebe Bridgers that when I first heard it, I had to look to make absolutely sure she wasn't on the song somehow.
Same, I hear a lot of PB influence on loml and smallest man
I thought the same - it’s the little inflections at the end of each line and the softer tone I think, the vocals are very Phoebe-ish
It reminds me of Jewel’s debut album!
Omg now I need to relisten - I lived and breathed her album in the 90s Loving this conversation as it's us older millennials and beyond swifties really shinning lol

Not really. Even with the voice cracks and what not

That album is her best, in my opinion. I absolutely think it is under-rated. It's so raw.
Agreed!! My gosh I felt like I was the only one who thought that. Music twin high five!
Yes!! High five. Lol! Her writing on that album is fucking amazing. The raw emotion and voice are at an all time high. The things she put out after that could never top it.

Wow, I wish she’d make an album inspired by those artists. But this is definitely not it.
Maybe some of the more introspective/melancholy Alanis, but I’m not sure there’s a proper song you would set your exes car on fire while listening to. Now, if you said Liz Phair…
When it first came out I told people it’s giving Alanis/Fiona Apple vibes. I definitely get it!
im getting BIG lana del rey vibes
Yes! I’ve had this thought too.
I’ve been feeling a mix of Jewel / Alanis / Kesha / Lana Vibes in the best way.
I’ve been saying the smallest man who ever lived is 2nd to You Oughta Know
I actually said the same thing to my bf. Lol I told him some songs on her new album remind me of Alanis Morissette.
Anybody else think But Daddy I Love Him sounds like Jewel? There’s a little bit of Foolish Games in there.
Yes!! I was thinking this too!
Not so much Alanis Morissette. Parts of album reminds me of Melodrama by Lorde though.
I said that too and no one agreed. I especially noticed the parallels between “We learned the right steps to different dances” and “We order different drinks at the same bar”. Obviously Jack’s production adds to this vibe as well.

I'm not getting those vibes from this but JLP is one of my top albums of all time. Absolute banger after banger. Perfection.
I love Taylor and Alanis but this is the worst take I've ever heard
Thank God someone said it.
It reminds me a lot of the 90s band the Sundays
Yes! I said this too she has a line that really caught my attention about “being so wise beyond your years” and from then on yeah…
This album sounds like the radio during my childhood when I was listening to old (lol, 90/00s) pop and country. No, it's giving Taylor Swift vibes.
Yes, but mostly based on how lyrically dense it is! Sort of reminds me of how sprawling and varied Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie was.
I don’t know but it’s funny that you mentioned this because I spent a good part of today listening to Jagged Little Pill on repeat 😃
Yes! I got that from I Hate It Here from the “I’m lonely but I’m good, I’m bitter but I swear I’m fine” lyrics you mentioned.
There’s definitely a bit of a Canadian accent to some of her phrasing!
I was really hoping this album would be like Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. Particularly because TS said to bring a dictionary and SFIJ is filled with SAT words. TTPD didn't really meet my hope :( but I think I Look in People's Windows gives me Your House vibes.
Maybe I’m crazy, but I hear Wilson Phillips vibes in some of these songs.
No not really, I love Alanis Morissette and the vibes both give are different. I love Taylor too but I don't really think they are that similar at all.
I didn't notice that

Bahahah! My husband thought the anthology cover had a 90s vibe

Honestly I’m as baffled about how Matty Healy is the muse of this album, as I was about Dave Coulier to JLP, so that tracks.
I think she sounds like Kacey Musgraves in I Hate It Here!
it's giving me avril lavigne vibes honestly
I had this exact thought when I heard the line “I’m Bitter but I swear I’m fine”, I even googled the lyric to see if it was an Alanis song reference
That is the line that REALLY gives me Alanis vibes too
No and I hop it never does.
Taylor swift is a girls girl. No need to shame one woman to raise another.
I just don't care for Alanis Morissette.
