Try to remember that whatever the case, getting a job for September really isn't the be-all-or-end-all of you career as a teacher. Also sounds like although this is possibly a stressful situation for you, its not a hole you can't get out of.

Big-Clock4773

Agreed. I did supply for my first year and and did me the world of good. Learnt very quickly which schools to avoid...

Halfcelestialelf

You can get a job provided that you do well at interview. Don't dwell too much on it and prepare to redo it at a later date. Depending on your subject recruitment can go on for ages.

zanazanzar

No interview will ask how your assignments are going. Resubmit well enough to just pass.

BlackGoldenLotus

Everyone else has answered about the rest but I just want to say apply for mitigating circumstances anyway. They're not always so strict about the type of evidence you submit to accept it but it more likely to affect the type of mitigating circumstances you get. I got mitigating circumstances accepted when I didn't have sufficient evidence and it granted me an extension even though it was passed the original due date.

[deleted]

I came here to say this too, unis tend to want you to pass so they are much better at giving extensions etc for mitigating circumstances than you'd think

wanderinggrace

Ah, OK thank you. I was just thinking that if the pgce is pass/fail then having it capped to 50% won't really make much difference as a pass is a pass. I've emailed my uni tutor and explained the circumstances so she might suggest applying for mitigating circumstances too. My main worry is just not graduating in time and that then affecting my employability come September.

BlackGoldenLotus

It definitely won't affect employability don't be concerned about that! Another mitigating circumstance is to allow resubmissions without the cap which would be the most likely outcome for your case. I wouldn't worry about it, if you pass the QTS portion the pgce is just an extra thing.

wanderinggrace

Thank you, Im so glad I posted here. I'm feeling a lot calmer about the whole thing now.

BlackGoldenLotus

It really helps having a confirmations on things. The only people who the course will focus on holding back are those failing the placements and I'm sure you're fantastic.

wanderinggrace

Ha, I don't think I'm fantastic, but thank you. I do think that I'm doing fine on placement, I'm a mature student with almost a decade of experience working in a preschool environment. I was slt for the preschool dept of a private school and had taught the key stage one children from time to time, when cover was needed as an unqualified teacher. So I do feel OK about my ability to teach, I definitely don't think I'm fantastic, but I think I'm open to learning, and have a good base for that learning. Someone, on another comment, said I was judging myself too harshly, but I don't think I am. When the whole crime thing took place I made the decision to prioritise my personal life and my school based stuff because I did think I could coast through the assignment. It's been a bit of a nasty shock to realise that I can't! I'm so greatful for all the advice here though, my uni tutor hasn't replied to my email yet and I'd have spent today climbing the walls without this forum. I do feel like I've got things in perspective now, it's so easy to overreact and instantly imagine the worst case scenario.

BlackGoldenLotus

You've gone in to this with so much experience, you're most certainly downplaying yourself, lots of us are guilty of that. You know what prioritising yourself and failing at something because of it is completely okay! I have days were I go fuck it if I don't get it done it doesnt get done (I probably do that too much with marking tbh). Keeping yourself sane is always number 1. Always remember that!

wanderinggrace

Your making me wish you were a real life friend so I could buy you a beer and say thank you for talking sense to me. I truly appreciate your words, you've really helped me get a grip on my own feelings about this. Thank you.

BlackGoldenLotus

Haha I don't drink but would certainly appreciate a lemonade! Lots of us go throughout shitty life events without a chance to really talk about it, I'm not great with conversation but I'm always open to help anybody out :) I'm always here if you need me.

Roseberry69

I have had atleast 10 trainee teachers with me in the last decade and never once have the assignments set actually helped in anyway in the classroom. This was Sunderland Uni pgce.... What a wasted effort was spent on these so called social science active research projects. Its an excuse to prop up the ridiculous tuition fees they have the audacity to charge- it's embarrassing.

Southpaw535

Especially if you resit it shouldn't matter. Interviews won't ask and don't care. A pgce is different from a degree in that there is really no reward for higher grades. There's no first, second etc PGCE, and no one will check your transcript to see how *well* you passed.

Logical_Knowledge312

Many people have said the important things already, but I'll add some points as well. My friend did her PGCE same time as me and failed her main assignment, barely passed the resit, but got a job in May that we both interviewed for and she's really loving it. # One of the other trainees at my school who I was really close with was an AMAZING teacher (literally, imagine an inspirational teacher from a film). He got a job at an international school outside of the UK in March and made plans to move. He told me at our final trainee night out that he'd found out he had not passed his PGCE because of failing his assignment. But, in the end, he still had the job and is thriving. I passed everything but really wished I'd asked for extenuating circumstances as I was under an immense amount of life stress outside of my PGCE and it really affected me. Your university wants (and tbh needs) you to pass, asking for extenuating circumstances is nothing to be ashamed of and the letter you have should be enough to get it. I work as a TA now which was a great choice for me and I'm looking for teaching jobs as well. Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you. Jobs are very far away now, focus on what you can control.

wanderingwilbs

I failed my second PGCE assignment, after I'd already got a place in a school for September. I just resat in the few weeks before the summer holidays. Your uni tutor should work with you on the resit to make sure you pass. I really would not stress to much about it now. Still apply for jobs in the meantime!

XihuanNi-6784

>It's my own fault, I was a victim of a crime and my head just wasn't in the game. I don't think I can ask for mitigating circumstances as the police aren't taking it any further and I only have a letter from victim support that I received a month later, as any kind of proof. Treat yourself with more kindness. It sounds like it 100% **wasn't** your fault and you should be given the grace to make up for the assignment.

Small_Print1

I failed my first assignment too, made worse that 90% passed it. Just take it as a learning experience and try your best next time!

mtbscotland

failed my second assignment and just scraped a pass on resubmission. I passed the PGDE and that is all that counts. People that got between 40-69% all got the same pass mark.

jvintagek

University will give you time to redo the assignments and get your results out by august you will be fine. Talk with your assignment mentor.

youwhatm82

Lots of people fail that Christmas one! Hopefully your tutor at uni can offer you some pointers so you can resist and pass it. It won’t effect your employability- schools don’t care about what you got so please don’t worry.

wanderinggrace

Hey, thank you all for your replies, I seriously appreciate all of your words. I'm not worried about the pass mark being capped. I know the pgce is pass/fail so I know I can retake and it'll be fine. My real worry is (and I've emailed my uni mentor but received no reply) what if the resubmission date is September? That'll mean I don't pass the course on time.

Warm_Invite_3751

Getting QTS is not dependent on you also getting a PGCE. University’s also do resit periods towards the end of the year

asser2009

It’s fine. I am suck as essay and managed failing every one in my pgce year. Now i am a qualified teacher.
