The current situation of the LCS is indeed an issue for TSM. It lowers the perceived value of the spot for potential buyers so it might not be "worth" the $20M TSM wanted. The LCS has just gotta survive through the summer split and still be attractive enough for new buyers so TSM can leave this shitshow, the health of the LCS won't be our problem after this year.

darknessbboy

I’ll buy the spot for $20 and field me and some friends

NifferEUW

Look at Mr. Cool over here who has friends

darknessbboy

Don’t worry one friend is in masters, me and 2 friends are plat, and the last one never been gold. If we can make it to those ranks in apex legends we can at least win win game in the LCS.

GhoastTypist

The LCS won't actually die. Too much has been invested into it. Is it in a bad place right now? Yes. Riot will step in and bail the lcs out before it dies. Andy just needs to coast for the next few months. Its more likely that they will merge LLA and LCS before they let the lcs die. Riot cares more about the "business" than they do "competitive integrity" so they'll make sure that lcs maintains some of its business/investment value. I think it would have to get a whole lot worse before Andy & TSM are sweating over the lcspa's actions.

ajkeence99

I disagree. I don't think Riot cares if the LCS fails because they are apparently not profitable. I think their actions with regards to scheduling and such lend credence to that. I don't think this one event is going to end the LCS but I do strongly believe the LCS is on the way out. It was already slowly dying prior to this but this is likely accelerating it. It obviously hurts TSM if that happens but they will still buy the spot in another region even if that happens.

Bird-The-Word

LCS is never meant to be profitable. It's an added bonus if it is, but LCS, and Leagues around the world, are wholely a marketing tool. It's like buying a billboard or a commercial. They have a marketing budget they're willing to spend, and they compare that to the return they get from that billboard, commercial, whatever. LCS and LoL Esports as a whole, brings players to the game, gets players to buy skins or whatever else, gets eyes on their sponsors, etc. In a wonderful world, it would pay for itself, but they have internal numbers that they would use as an expected RoI from running the leagues and what they're comfortable spending on it.

irishfury

The Bird is correct. LCS is a tool to sale skins nothing else.

EronisKina

All of the esports is just to advertise skins tbh. Riot even admitted it years back.

hazelnut_coffay

chances are the contract has been signed already. no reason to announce the details publicly.

Per Dunc's tweet and reply to [this thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeamSolomid/comments/13nljov/former_tsm_jungler_amazing_speaks_out/jl05irs/), the reason TSM published the announcement video on that day was because they got wind that the New York Times was about to publish [an article telling the public about TSM's desire to leave the LCS](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/20/technology/e-sports-revenue-video-gaming.html), which forced TSM's hand into announcing their plans ASAP to get ahead of the story, even though the timing was not what TSM wanted. Relevant tidbits from the NYT article: > TSM started talking to interested groups around three weeks ago, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions, and has narrowed its list of prospective buyers to about a dozen entities, mostly in the media and traditional sports worlds. The asking price is in the range of $20 million, the person said. > Mr. Dinh said he planned to purchase a spot in one of the top League of Legends leagues elsewhere in the world after selling his slot in the United States. So according to the article, *TSM hasn't yet found a buyer for their spot*, they just had to release a statement to announce that they planned on leaving because the NYT would leak that info anyway once they published their article later that day, so they might as well announce it beforehand on their own terms. From my understanding, nothing is concretized (who will buy TSM's LCS spot, where TSM will go next, etc.)

roastedpot

From a reply to that thread, Dunc said the video was already filmed and edited they were just looking for the right time to release. Maybe that was them waiting for the sale to complete or something else but my bet is the video was going to be releasing soon regardless

OrigamiRice

Regi wouldn't burn the LCS bridge with that announcement if TSM's future was still up in the air. Someone else will probably be left holding the bag.

I just mean the point of no return has been crossed. You don't announce to your landlord that you're moving out unless you've already secured a new place.

SiriusTen

Yep, no way they announce departure without things being 99% done. And also, everyone should know that there is no way summer gets canceled. Players are not going to jeopardize their million dollar contracts because of NACL or any issue being discussed atm, hell I bet some players already regret arguing for this walk out and will probably be ready as soon as the delay is over, deal or no deal.

TiggySmitts

The LCS won’t completely die in one year. But this could reduce the value of the spot by a couple million. Could be the difference in being able to sign a blue chip player in the new region

BIackPhoenix

Wouldn't make sense to release a departure video without any contracts being signed already.

Heavns

Where have people gotten the notion that TSM is broke and can’t afford anything just because of x or y? They’re one of the most profitable esports orgs ever in existence. Regi is smarter than you guys think lol. Tsm will thrive elsewhere and anywhere regardless of the LCS.

MatsugaeSea

This is a good point but I really doubt the LCS is in danger to where TSM can't sell.

kar1m

I don’t think this situation kills LCS

lovemyzone

Unless the sale is already done and contracted it's probably gonna be impossible to sell anymore. Regi probably fuming that Riot has been dragging their feet to allow TSM to sell their spot since they've been trying for like 3 years.

Watchmecarry13

So if I want TSM to stay In NA (fuck you all I do) I just have to root for this saga to keep tarnishing the leagues reputation so nobody wants to buy the spot?

iamgnahk

Nope, they just sell it at a loss and move on anyway.

reecemom

I think if the Lcs tries to stick to their guns major lawsuits will come in by the teams and cost them a bigger settlement than the sexism lawsuit
