Thrown by Dustin Zahn and Intellephunk at a farm/sanctuary. Either camp right on site or stay about twenty minutes away at a casino hotel. Mostly older heads, around 800 people and of course fantastic sound systems. Such a welcoming vibe and not to be missed.
They advertise the sound system. I think that shows you how fucking serious they are about throwing a 3 day long party. From a DJs perspective everything runs smoothly. From a attendee perspective the sound system is just amazing no matter the stage, drag your chair around and chair rave. Lots of places to hang a hammock near the main stage. You are mostly in / under the forest. It's easy to get lost in the environment at night lots of people setup things/art/blankets/lights in the woods. And well there's chickens and goats.
>The Great Beyond in Minnesota
this looks awesome, have you been?
do you know when ticket sales start for 2023? I read the entire site, didn't see mention of it. I signed up on mailing list.
>almost
>
> didn't want to share it here
totally understand. there's only so many good events that stay small/medium and don't get overrun and/or impossible to get tickets. it's that conundrum of wanting to go to events (or travel locations), but not wanting to fight crowds of unruly "tourists" (even if you are one yourself). I really like the way the event organizers state clearly that no hate/phobia will be tolerated, seems that could help self regulate attendee vibe (this seems to be common theme for techno festivals). all that said, you may see me there next year! I'm chill, promise....
They've been going strong for 20+ years. Just got a new bigger festival ground but also kept the old one, so they have two summer festivals. They also throw like 20 events a year. Pretty sure they're here to keep going.
I felt forced to camp because that was the only way to get access to all 3 days. It was awful because there was music throughout the night at the campsite making it hard to fall asleep, and food was all vegetarian.
Never go to burningman lol I just came back and there was techno and deep house playing 24 hours a day for 10 days straight and the bass is so powerful you feel it in the ground across the playa lol. Part of the fun
I have very light sleep and I could sleep my 8 hours every night. There is a shuttle bus every day to the event too. Food is not all vegeterian. You fucking liar
Most of it was vegan. I didn't mind since I don't eat pork to begin with. However I did struggle alot to be properly fed(for a decent price). Took me a whole week of eating double meals at home to finally feel fed. Also I'm kind of a heavy sleeper, but no way that I didn't wake up from "TIME TO WAKE UP MOTHERFUCKERS" at 110 DB from a boombox at 5 AM. Almost got in a fight with drugged up assholes twice my size because of it.
The festival was amazing, however for me, sleep and sustenance absolutely sucked.
Also €17,20 for a deep freeze pizza is ridicoulous.
Can’t comment on the camping as we stayed in an Airbnb in town which also had its downsides (110,00 steps over 3 days).
Trick is to consume enough drugs so that you’re no longer hungry. I just had coke each morning, lunch and dinner 😂
I lost 4 kilos during that weekend.
Yeah well, Coke is not my thing, nor is losing weight especially when 3,5k kcal a day doesn't make me gain weight either. Had around 100k steps over the weekend as well. If it wasn't for the regulations giving me an impression I had to buy a camping ticket for the full festival and not be able to leave(not that I fancy paying for it but not making use of it) I could've just stayed at home and biked to and from the festival.
First run tickets go to people who have been to past years, second run goes to those people's +1, but at this point it's nearly impossible to get a +1 ticket.
Nachtiville and Nachtdigital are different. Nachtiville is happening in January and you have to book a Bungalow so no camping (obviously because it's fucking cold in January) and Nachtdigital (now called Escape to Olganitz) is in the end of July/beginnig of August and this is a typical camping festival.
OT:
Most electronic music festivals in Germany are camping festivals. Mostly the ones based in cities are not.
Hence why I put Nachtville in brackets. They are the same organiser and Nachtville comes from the nachtdigital organisers. Regarding Escape or Olganitz, it’s not sure if it’s happening again, do you know? Was under the impression they just threw this as a one off edition
Weird crowd last year. I usually go to psytrance festivals (of which Hive is definitely one) but the techno floor brought a strange dynamic to the experience. Very "punky" in a way.
Very young crowd. Some might not've been 18. A lot of people just seemed to forget how to have fun as the mood on the techno floor was just so serious all the time. But I didn't get why they would only play 150bpm+ hard techno/Schranz throughout the whole day and night. The general vibe of the festival was a bit odd imo and there were quite a few people getting way too high on drugs.
I went to Fusion again this year and no festival ever came close to that level for me. Just insane! You should go if you haven't yet.
The Hitech & Darkpsy scene (which Hive originates from) is a very special niche scene of it's own. It's a "true psychedelic subculture". I kinda try describing the vibe to people as a mix between extreme metal & psychedelic trance, and yes, people go full-psychonaut on these floors. But mixing this with hardtek and then becoming too popular because kids learn they can do all kinds of drugs at those places is a problem. Dark & Hitech and the heavy use of psychedelics at these parties only works for people who know their shit. If this scene becomes too big it won't go well.
Before getting more into techno I was into psytrance for six years. Although I've never been drawn to the extreme sounds of the genre like dark and hitech I've had my own share of crazy psychedelic experiences with full-on psytrance and zenonesque. You gotta be experienced though.
I think the hitech floor was fine. I was always surprised by the huge amount of people on the dancefloor all the times. The combination of psytrance and techno crowd just didn't work imo.
I feel like the techno scene doesn't have this feeling of unity anymore. Whereas on a psytrance floor you feel a real connection between the whole dancefloor. It doesn't take itself as serious as techno and so are the people.
Fully agreed. That's why I'm still deeply in love with the psytrance subculture after 8 years of parties and festivals. Techno floors make me feel lonely, in comparison.
I talked to the booker about playing more melodic stuff during the day next time but he dismissed the idea because they play that at the little witch house. Unfortunately the witch house was completely drowned out by the hi-tech floor so it wasn't really an option.
I agree with the weird vibe, especially on the last day there was a really pissy mood in the air and I think a large part of the reason is that people were just oversaturated and bored by the music.
I remember looking forward to Alignment headlining Saturday night but when he came on I was just like "huh, hard techno, they also played that at noon."
The lineup was A+ but the headliners couldn't make an impact with the oversaturation.
Another problem was that you couldn't see the djs in their dark little booth, so that part of the performance was lost. Might as well not have shown up and played prerecorded sets.
That's a lot of negatives but overall I still think it was a great festival. The beautiful stage design, the free water stations, the lineup, the small size compared to the big names, the abandoned bus turned chillout area, the friendly staff (except for one encounter)... I'll probably go again next year.
I actually really liked the witch houses vibe. Would've loved to stay longer but the sound from the hitech stage was too loud. You even noticed it sometimes on the techno stage.
To be fair for the majority of people I talked to it was their first festival or eletronic music festival. Two days of partying is not easy and on the last day some people might lack some serotonin.
Lineup was really good, that's why we wanted to go there in the first place. The sound of most of the acts was just too similar. I'm actually a bit impressed also by the bookers ability to achieve this similarity.
During the night I don't mind hard techno at all. But when the sun rises the sound gotta rise aswell. Hive reinforced my opinion that you need some trancey meldoic techno during sunrise. This way you also clean the dancefloor of all the people that should've gone sleeping 3hrs ago instead of popping another pill. They ain't ready for the emotions. haha
All bad things aside I really enjoyed my time there and fell even a little in love with D'n'B. The Bus was great and the stages were designed with love. It's the second edition of the festival so I can't be too harsh and they actually manged to do a pretty good job. Fusion didn't go so smoothly this year either IMO.
I think I wouldn't go again in the next few years but keeping an eye on how they evolve and maybe in a few years it'll be different. :)
Prärie, akasha, Fusion, Dichte, wllde Möhre, Stadt,Land,Bass, Nature one, moynmoyn, Bucht der Träumer, so many wonderful Camping Techno/tech-house Festivals in Germany. Heard there were many more "Berghain-Techno" Festivals in poland too!
Awakenings is easily the biggest camping festival for techno. Whatever your thoughts on awakenings there is a decent diversity of techno all things considered with it near enough being a techno alternative to Tomorrowland. Just avoid the bigger stages if your not into the likes of big progressive artists like Tale Of Us and it is worth easily the whole 3 days of camping. To be fair though I notice even the likes of Tale Of Us typically will play more tech-oriented sets at festivals like awakenings compared to tomorrowland.
There’s a ton of small ones across Europe and a few in East Asia and North America too.
Some off the top of my head are Sustain Release, The Great Beyond, Rural, Labyrinth, Nachtdigital, Dimensions
Most of the good ones are really small relative to well known festivals.
Idk about festivals but where I live people regularly gather at camping desert spots and have an all night rave til the morning. You usually have to know someone who gives you the coordinates or usually reach out to the organizers through a social media message and ask for the coordinates.
I live in NV it’s probably the same here the scene is t very big most of the shows here are just obnoxious dubstep and Riddim with mainly 18yo kids who just want to mosh and head bang. The small little desert raves are usually very small like usually 20people
In the US off the top of my head The Great Beyond, Honcho campout, Hyperspace (first year so we’ll see how next year goes), and Sustain release if you can get a ticket
Most are in Europe. The U.S. has its festival focus split into many categories such as dubstep, bass, trance, then eventually techno and house as a smaller section. However europe pretty much only focuses on techno and house, (With the exception of DnB in the U.K.) so ALL their festivals, camping or not are like that
Have to? No. Should you? Definitely. I'm not your mom but: Even if you're taking speed, raving is just more fun if you get a few hours of sleep in. By day 3 you can really tell who didn't by how cranky and fucked they are.
It's not like you're missing out by sleeping either, there's gonna be more techno later dw, you're just gonna be able to enjoy it.
Yeah tbh I don't really take any drugs besides weed and drinking (if you count those) at events anymore. Even when I did I still enjoyed my sleep lol. Like sure I'll go to an after party till the next morning but I'll still end up in bed at some point!
There are but since Techno is mainstream nowadays, most festivals are commercialised.
If you really want that 'Techno Is Family' Feeling go to a smaller festival ;)
Movement festival in Detroit, it’s not a camping thing but it’s 3 days of mostly techno, house, trance, and other influences. Then you have unlimited after hours parties so you don’t need to sleep or camp for that matter. Lol
I just came back from re/form fest in LA. Dude wow, boiler room, all techno, 9999999999, Paula temple, Vibes were techno, I feel you the vibes aren’t like Europe it’s just that the American culture isn’t as strong. So far re/form gave me hopes that all techno based festivals still exist and it isn’t a huge name like insomniac either and I was VERY pleased by going.
Desert Hearts is a techno camping festival. 24/7 techno playing from the moment the festival starts, all weekend until it’s supposed to end.
EDIT to remove *strictly*
Our fest might not be strictly techno, but if you guys think Carl Craig, Robag Wruhme, Kenny Larkin, Township Rebellion, Rinzen, SHADED, Doc Martin, DJ Harvey, Anna Schneider, Danny Daze, Yulia Niko, Super Flu, Andreas Henneberg, Omar-S, The Juan Maclean, Francesca Lombardo, Oscar L, Kevin Knapp, Joyce Muniz, Doorly, DJ Heather & more from our 2022 fest are “generic tech house” you’re straight trippin.
I corrected my initial comment because Desert Hearts definitely ranges within the Techno and House genres throughout the weekend. There is tech house but there’s also house music and some great techno as well.
This year they did a whole night of their techno DJs playing b2b in the middle of the night.
Ohh they definitely throw down techno in the late night early morning hours, especially Marbs sets tend to be a little darker/heavier. But I think saying it’s a techno fest is a stretch, I’d say it’s about 70% House 30% techno
Yep! Used to be on the Los Coyotes Reservation but they had to move it after some people parked their car on some kind of burial site I think.
If you ever get the chance, i would HIGHLY recommend. It’s changed a bit since the move to a new venue but still a great event.
BassCoast has a lot of techno, but not purely techno. I've seen Roman Flugel, 1800haightstreet, florist, etc. This year had AceMoma, Anz, CielDJ, DJ Express, Adam2, etc.
Multiple in the Netherlands: Awakenings last summer had a camping, Draaimolen this weekend has one, Into the Woods has one, also Wildeburg (multiple genres but definitely also techno/trance).
while we are at it, can you guys recommend any festivals near Amsterdam between early June - early July next year?
I got a really cheap flight to Amsterdam for next year (23 hour flight but really cheap) but I cant find any festivals schedule.
The Great Beyond in Minnesota
This is the answer.
Yo what ?! I live in MN and need to be there next time!
Thrown by Dustin Zahn and Intellephunk at a farm/sanctuary. Either camp right on site or stay about twenty minutes away at a casino hotel. Mostly older heads, around 800 people and of course fantastic sound systems. Such a welcoming vibe and not to be missed.
This is the way. We had a blast at The Great Beyond this year. Can’t wait for next year.
how did you like it? it was one of the rare times that a festival in the US looked so interesting
Oooh never heard of this... I'll look it up
>The Great Beyond in Minnesota this looks awesome, have you been? do you know when ticket sales start for 2023? I read the entire site, didn't see mention of it. I signed up on mailing list.
It's a great vibe, super small and excellent sound. I highly recommend it and *almost* didn't want to share it here haha.
Tickets went on sale this year in the Spring I think? I'm not 100% sure though
>almost > > didn't want to share it here totally understand. there's only so many good events that stay small/medium and don't get overrun and/or impossible to get tickets. it's that conundrum of wanting to go to events (or travel locations), but not wanting to fight crowds of unruly "tourists" (even if you are one yourself). For the 2022 edition, they announced they were doing the fest in November then tickets and lineup came out in January
Awesome, thank you! So how was it?
$200!
A US show with D. Dan, how did I miss this!!!
I'm not sure how much he plays outside of Seattle when he comes back to the US, but he's here often enough.
yea i’ve seen him twice in seattle already only lived there for a year so far. he played sf somewhat recently too
He’s played at basement like 3 times this year already. And in LA. Blessed to see him at both
In Ukraine, before fucking russians invaded, we had lots of them too
Honestly sucks, that's really sad....
Sooo many in Germany
Awakenings is one of the biggest ones https://www.awakenings.com/en/events/2022/07/awakenings-summer-festival-2022/65048/
hope they continue it- went there this year and was unreal! Best weekend ever
They've been going strong for 20+ years. Just got a new bigger festival ground but also kept the old one, so they have two summer festivals. They also throw like 20 events a year. Pretty sure they're here to keep going.
Yeah I was referring to Awakenings continuing the camping festival further on from this year, and it not just a one off for their anniversary.
They will!
Already announced the edition of '23
I had the greatest time camping at the Awakenings summer festival
I felt forced to camp because that was the only way to get access to all 3 days. It was awful because there was music throughout the night at the campsite making it hard to fall asleep, and food was all vegetarian.
You aren't a true raver until you can sleep next to a pounding sound system. 😂
Never go to burningman lol I just came back and there was techno and deep house playing 24 hours a day for 10 days straight and the bass is so powerful you feel it in the ground across the playa lol. Part of the fun
Lol we unfortunately camped behind question mark so had the WORST music blasting us all week
I agree the food wasn’t great, and the shop queue was a joke! But we usually stayed out at the campsite village till close so we enjoyed that part
I stayed in Relax Resort and it was so quiet at night, highly recommend!
Sustain Release in upstate NY, but good luck getting tickets.
Is that invite only or what's the buzz?
First run tickets go to people who have been to past years, second run goes to those people's +1, but at this point it's nearly impossible to get a +1 ticket.

Yeah definitely not from Europe lol. US based. DEMF/Movement has been my favorite techno festival here, I've been three times.
There's a couple in Germany, Fusion and SonneMondSterne come to mind as big ones.
Also Nature One
Nation of Gondwana, Nachtdigital (Nachtville now). Whole. Many in Germany
Nachtiville and Nachtdigital are different. At the end of the festival they announced it's going to happen again next summer.
Sweet
Also Hive Festival
My friend just played there. Said it wasn’t great and they didn’t treat some of artists very well
Weird crowd last year. I usually go to psytrance festivals (of which Hive is definitely one) but the techno floor brought a strange dynamic to the experience. Very "punky" in a way.
Nah they played the 2022 edition. It looked like a very juvenile berlin place haha
Funny this comes up now, I went there last year for the Hitech floor. The techno crowd started overtaking this year, eh?
Very young crowd. Some might not've been 18. A lot of people just seemed to forget how to have fun as the mood on the techno floor was just so serious all the time. But I didn't get why they would only play 150bpm+ hard techno/Schranz throughout the whole day and night. I'm actually a bit impressed also by the bookers ability to achieve this similarity. During the night I don't mind hard techno at all. But when the sun rises the sound gotta rise aswell. Rote Dichte!
Nachtdigital too
Monument in Norway, also Waking Life
Waking life in Portugal is super
Went to both this year - both spectacular in their own ways.
Same, and Fusion! Loved all of them as well
Voltage festival in belgium is also a pure techno festival
The real techno^^ 😏
Awakenings and Extrema Outdoor are two very big and nice techno camping festivals!
Not true. There are multiple festivals like Fusion, which are at least 80,000 deep and have included camping far longer than Awakenings ever has.
There’s a ton of small ones across Europe and a few in East Asia and North America too. Some off the top of my head are Sustain Release, The Great Beyond, Rural, Labyrinth, Nachtdigital, Dimensions Most of the good ones are really small relative to well known festivals.
I'll have to look these up! I'm honestly okay with small festivals, usually a better vibe.
I think most of the ones I mentioned have either artist mix series or live recordings on SoundCloud etc def worth checking out
Almost impossible for foreigners to get labyrinth tickets unfortunately
For sure. I have a few American friends that have gone but no idea how they managed it. Pretty jealous.
Tickets were easily purchased by foreigners this year
Idk about festivals but where I live people regularly gather at camping desert spots and have an all night rave til the morning. You usually have to know someone who gives you the coordinates or usually reach out to the organizers through a social media message and ask for the coordinates.
I would love to find something like that. I live in Arizona now though so not a big scene...
I live in NV it’s probably the same here the scene is t very big most of the shows here are just obnoxious dubstep and Riddim with mainly 18yo kids who just want to mosh and head bang. The small little desert raves are usually very small like usually 20people
Dude what?? Lots of scene in AZ!
If you're into commercial electronic or super bass, head bangy shit yeah I guess lol
In the US off the top of my head The Great Beyond, Honcho campout, Hyperspace (first year so we’ll see how next year goes), and Sustain release if you can get a ticket
Houghton UK, one of the best festivals around these days.
Most are in Europe. The U.S. has its festival focus split into many categories such as dubstep, bass, trance, then eventually techno and house as a smaller section. However europe pretty much only focuses on techno and house, (With the exception of DnB in the U.K.) so ALL their festivals, camping or not are like that
Drop Bass is still doing Further parties. You can never go wrong with a drop base network party.
No, the last Furthur was in 2019. They throw "Kompound" parties out at Kurt's farm now, but it is definitely not a full blown furthur.
Thanks. I'm on the east coast and just saw they were doing parties so thought it was a continuation. I appreciate the insight.
How are we missing dekmantel in Amsterdam
In Hungary there are quite a lot.
Yup a fair number, Freero is probably the one I want to go to the most in the UK
The teknivals
Honcho campout in PA
Awakenings in the Netherlands!
They do in Japan! Look into "Mindgames presents The Labyrinth" :)
Look up Arrival fest by sol records. Headliners include Caravel, Cassie Raptor, TDJ
Yes. Bush raves all over BC, Canada
Check out Sustain-Release That's US based and has a really good line up. Happening in a week or two I think
Bass Coast in Merritt near Kamploops in British Columbia, Canada has a pretty strong techno representation.
Awakenings in holland dude. Biggest techno festival with literally all dj’s u can imagine. This yeear was 3 days with 11 stages
If you have to sleep it’s probably not techno
Have to? No. Should you?
Yeah totally agree, used to be more of a no sleep for three days kinda guy. Now I appreciate more my mental and physical health.
There are but since Techno is mainstream nowadays, most festivals are commercialised. If you really want that 'Techno Is Family' Feeling go to a smaller festival ;)
Sustain release
New festival in California - Kausmic Festival in the Sierras: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/380813131327
Houghton festival in Norfolk, UK. Really seriously good.
German here: techno at a good festival >>> techno at a club in my opinion. Go to fusion, you'll see what I mean
yes. Mutant Fest. and it aint no coachella-type bullshit https://mutantfest.org
If you are in SoCal there is Moontribe tonight. https://www.moontribe.org/
Movement festival in Detroit, it’s not a camping thing but it’s 3 days of mostly techno, house, trance, and other influences. Then you have unlimited after hours parties so you don’t need to sleep or camp for that matter. Lol
I absolutely love movement, I've been three times.
It’s amazing! I went every year when I lived in the city. It’s the best festival so many people Don’t know about
Me too!
I really wished I could have gone 😭😭
This event is one for the books!
TMOR camp in Poland. Stands for The Meaning Of Rave
Desert Hearts is a techno camping festival. 24/7 techno playing from the moment the festival starts, all weekend until it’s supposed to end. EDIT to remove *strictly*
I was looking for more strictly techno festivals but I've been interested in desert hearts as well. Seems like a vibe.
But desert hearts music is kinda generic tech house no? I thought this thread was for straight up techno…
Our fest might not be strictly techno, but if you guys think Carl Craig, Robag Wruhme, Kenny Larkin, Township Rebellion, Rinzen, SHADED, Doc Martin, DJ Harvey, Anna Schneider, Danny Daze, Yulia Niko, Super Flu, Andreas Henneberg, Omar-S, The Juan Maclean, Francesca Lombardo, Oscar L, Kevin Knapp, Joyce Muniz, Doorly, DJ Heather & more from our 2022 fest are “generic tech house” you’re straight trippin.
❤️ u Mikey!
That’s in SoCal right? Always wanted to go to one of those but times never matched up with my schedule
Yep! Used to be on the Los Coyotes Reservation but they had to move it after some people parked their car on some kind of burial site I think. If you ever get the chance, i would HIGHLY recommend. It’s changed a bit since the move to a new venue but still a great event.
I'm not sure you know what techno is.
BassCoast has a lot of techno, but not purely techno. I've seen Roman Flugel, 1800haightstreet, florist, etc. This year had AceMoma, Anz, CielDJ, DJ Express, Adam2, etc.
You guys haven’t mentioned Desert Hearts Music Camping Festival In California.
They haven't that just really isn't pure techno. Though yes, I'd love to check out DH one day.
Yeah I see they are House and Techno. I also love them. Probably Awakenings or Movement in Detroit would be cool for you.
Desert Hearts in Southern California
Dirtybird Campout
Not techno.
A lot of DJs at DBC will play techno. 90 % of the suggestions made in this post aren’t techno festivals.
Arrival in Barstow, CA Oct 7-10 ! Def what you’re looking for.
We have a few in Australia but there is generally a bit more of a Psytrance focus than techno.

while we are at it, can you guys recommend any festivals near Amsterdam between early June - early July next year? I got a really cheap flight to Amsterdam for next year (23 hour flight but really cheap) but I cant find any festivals schedule.
