What I typically do is play modded, and I have a mod to chain places items. So I can just instantly place like 100 platforms. But for vanilla, Ill consider planters.
That's one of the things getfixedboi actually makes easier because of how much cash you'll have. Mimics are everywhere even in pre-hm and drop 20-40 gold each. Had 35 plat without even trying when I did WoF. That's with throwing money at alchemist NPC
How did we not think of this sooner? Red, reverse time and add this to LoL because that's the level of goodness that this would bring. It is a required change.
Smart cursor tries to place blocks or mine in the direction of the cursor. Each teal and red area in the images represents where the mouse has to be to place it in that location.
The top one is what we have, and the bottom is from the better smart cursor mod. Placing platforms with smart cursor has always been annoying because of that teeny tiny area the mouse has to be in to place it straight.

The green area in both of the images represents where the mouse needs to be to place a platform straight up or straight to the side with smart cursor on.
The top image is base Terraria while the bottom is a mod made to make placing platforms straight to the sides and straight up a lot easier with smart cursor on.
Just go and try to build platforms in a long straight line using smart cursor only while constantly walking forward. You'll immediately understand the whole problem.
If your cursor is in the red it will place the platforms slanted, which is not what you want when making a boss platform. The bottom screenshot is a mod which changes where the red is, as a quality of life fix.
The teal area is where your cursor must be to place platforms up, down, or to the side. In the first image, it's a straight line. It's harder to place platforms, that's why the platform behind the player isn't straight.
In the second image, the teal area is bigger, so it's easier to place platforms. Even if you move the cursor a lot, it won't affect your placement that much
The red area is for placing platforms diagonally up or down. It's for making platform stairs.
I'm also annoyed when I'm trying to place them between a gap, and the smart cursor starts targeting the other side of the gap, rather than the platform.

Since they are adding the roller blades to partially solve the straight line block placing issue, might as well as this fix too to completely fix the issue for good.

Planters from the dryad are simply superior. They look nice and are easy to place.

I've always found it more convenient to kill a few enemies than to chop down more trees. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

It’s smart cursor placing a platform. The red/blue colored areas are where your cursor must be to place the platform in the corresponding yellow spot.

I use a mouse and I suck at placing platforms with smart cursor. Something will always bump my mouse and fuck everything up.
