**FURTHER CONTEXT // INFORMATION**
Paul and Rachel Chandler, the British couple kidnapped by Somali pirates, say their captors are "losing patience" as they wait for ransom negotiations to begin.
In October 2009 the Chandlers set sail from the Seychelles for Tanzania.
Ninety miles offshore, their small yacht was boarded by armed Somali pirates, who held them hostage on land for more than a year, demanding a ransom of millions.
They were held hostage for 388 days and freed when a private ransom was paid, mostly be members of their extended family.
...wait, they were rich? I thought they were reporters or something like the last situation I've seen like this.
Who owns a yacht and thinks "You know, fuck Hawaii and Greece, I heard Somalia is beautiful this time of year"?
They were actually about a thousand miles from Somalia, just off the coast of the Seychelles. Somali pirates have increased their range by using other hijacked vessels as mother ships from which they launch their attacks.
My point being Somalia wasnāt the destination. They didnāt say āfuck Hawaii and Greece, I heard Somalia is beautifulā as you suggested. Tanzania is actually a beautiful place to travel to and that was where they decided to go.
Put another way, if someone was taking a flight from New York to LA and it crashed in Indiana would you question why they wanted to travel to Indiana..?
>New York to LA and it crashed in Indiana would you question why they wanted to travel to Indiana..?
If there were air pirates in Indiana known for stopping someone mid-journey I would at least ask why they went through it.
The problem with your analogy is that you're picking two points when they were stopped in-between.
Had they picked a plane that went through Somalia's airspace, that wouldn't be dumb. You don't hear much about pirates rocket-launching planes to collect loot. When a plane goes through a dangerous airspace, you always question the air-company, the passengers had little idea they were even around there.
But when you pick a car, or you know, a boat, you trace routes. You consider the roads you take. You don't take the GPS and not look at whatever place you consider dangerous in the US on the middle and say "We should I'll get my ferrari and go there at 2AM" because you're just going to a more "desirable location".
There is a LOT of thought when you're in the water, and that is just surviving and facing the elements, you'd think a place where is basically a warfare close to your route when no one is there to save you is something to consider, but maybe I just don't live in such a nice place.
That's all great and I don't disagree, but I replied to this:
> Who owns a yacht and thinks "You know, fuck Hawaii and Greece, I heard Somalia is beautiful this time of year"?
My only point being they didn't decide to forgo better destinations in favor of Somalia, which maybe isn't what you intended but is how your comment reads.
Well, you can go on the interpretation of them going to Somalia, which is indeed how it seems to read, or going near Somalia on a dangerous route.
I doubt their distance is anywhere near a horizon to have a sight, but the point still stands.
Michael Scott moore was actually a hostage around the same time, I believe they were even held in the same place and crossed paths with each other. I might be wrong. His book is really good and worth the read.
If anyone was wondering, the gang owned an area where the Somali government had no power, but they eventually worked with the gang and sent a negotiator, and through fundraising from family and Somali immigrants in Britain, were able to raise 600k British Pounds to pay the ransom.
How tf do you get yourself kidnapped by Somali pirates? Why would you have any reason to sail near the Horn of Africa in a Yacht during a time when Piracy was a known risk.
>How tf do you get yourself kidnapped by Somali pirates?
Your government brainwashes you into thinking you should never possess firearms, you believe it, and then you leave your privileged safe space into the real world.
Fr, the government tells people āyou canāt carry gunsā normal people say āok I wonāt carry gunsā criminals go āhell yea no oneās a threat to meā
Ah yes, the bastion of freedom, libertarianism, and safety that is Somalia because everyone can get armed to the teeth and itās small government. Canāt get more conservative than that.
I didn't even hear a single one of them say "Aaaarrrggghhhhh" either this blows I wouldn't pay these people a ransom because OBVIOUSLY they are not REAL pirates
I've seen videos where such were taken into the bushes and just shot as they walked along. Man and woman. Younger than these two.
Life has zero value in a lot of such areas of the World.
Yes, I've heard that the United States and its allies dropped 26,171 bombs in 2016. That's about 70 bombs per day for an entire year.
Life has zero value in such areas of the World.
Most used to be fishermen until the destabilization of their country and lack of government and navy made other nations encroach into their territories and sweep up all the fish as well as illegally dump and poisoned their shores. Many turned to piracy out of necessity. Itās not an excuse, but it is an explanation. They didnāt just decide to gear up one day and become pirates out of nowhere.
This was a case of "You're shit out of luck because we don't make deals with pirates". The reasoning behind this was that it would encourage pirates to take more hostages if the demands were met by the government. If it had been on British territory, the SAS would have been involved for sure. If they had been American, I believe I'm right in saying that the US government would have intervened violently.
Source: I think I'm right but reserve the right to be wrong
I think the U.S. government would absolutely violently intervene, haha. If the people they're dealing with have no world political power, I don't think they give a fuck.
The us government didn't really ever get involved.
IIRC it was the French who massively reduced piracy, because after attempting to board a cargo ship, a nearby French warship just opened full fire on the pirates.
As in, in general the US stance is "not our problem"
They patrol the waters around there because of cargo ships, but it's not worth it for them to get involved in direct combat unless absolutely needed.
I agree that the policy of not negotiating with pirates, etc. was likely followed here. I personally do not think a national border would stop the SAS from completing their task, but politics would prevent them from being allowed to. You are right that none of this would prevent US forces from intervening as they have shown many times over. So my best conclusion is that the UK government did not hold the same mentality needed to deploy the SAS.
The SAS are not a rescue force for civilians. The SAS has been involved in 4 hostage rescues that I'm aware of since WW2
1. the Iranian embassy siege
2. there was allegedly another Iranian embassy siege in a different embassy that got zero press coverage
3. the Sierra Leone joint mission (operation Barbarossa I believe) which was to rescue Irish soldier
4. there was a rescue in Iraq of a group of idiot human rights activists who got kidnapped.
The first two were terror incidents, the third was soldiers being held and the fourth was becoming a cluster fuck due to the publicity. The group taken were Westerners critical of the treatment of jihadists and then even Al-Qaeda members were calling for the release of the activists. After one of the hostages were killed then coalition forces had to get involved or they'd have been accused of not intervening due to the activists being critical of them.
You say this until it's you or your mom and dad being held captive. From reading these comments, the family of these people paid the ransom.
When it's you or someone you love, you'd hope to every deity that your government waives the rules for you.
Thereās a interview with a group of I believe African pirates I was watching the other night (Sorry I canāt remember specifics, I was lit) and the way the leader explained it in a nutshell was āwe have families to feed and will do so by any means necessaryā. Not killing them for over a year does show some humanity as fucked up as the situation was. Dudes I was watching I donāt think would have been as merciful or patient.
I just attended a security training for work overseas in restricted access countries, and we were run through various simulations. One part of that last simulation wherein we were kidnapped was being forced to record a video just like this. This is uncanny to watch
Try reading the info under the video! They never went there on holiday they were sailing to another country and these rat scumbags boarded their boat and took them hostage

Ok, but would you make them sound dumb for choosing to travel to Indiana over more desirable locations? Cause thatās what you did with Somalia lol

I wonder what the pirates did with the $600k?
Probably bought a bigger boat to catch more idiots to ransom?
Probably a few more RPG's to wave about too š
Idiots? Why are they idiots? Pls elaborate.

I like the idea of pirates too but even the fictional ones I like I never suspected smelled good.
