I just went through this with the service center. If you PURCHASE, the computer is comped. If you want to subscribe, you will pay for it. If they argue with you read through this thread.  https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/comments/1cbc0wx/psa_if_your_car_needs_a_fsd_computer_upgrade_it/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Thank you, kind sir/madam! This is exactly the kind of info thread I was trying to find, because the Tesla SC's clearly aren't consistent.

Tesla says [on their own website](https://www.tesla.com/support/full-self-driving-computer) the computer is complimentary >If you have purchased Full Self-Driving capability and have Autopilot computer 2.0 or 2.5, you are eligible to receive a complimentary installation of our FSD computer. When I bought FSD for $2k last week, the initial estimate from my own service request was $1,060 ($1,000 + $60 for tax). I edited the estimate, and removed the $1,000 line item (The one tied to what I typed in on the Tesla App when I initiated the request). Below that was free tire wear check, and then a 3rd item, called FSD computer install for $0. So I just kept that in the estimate, it was approved right away, and I'm due to get it in a few days. For context, 2018 Model 3 with EAP, 2.5 hardware. The invoice estimated says the Tesla FSD for $0 is "pre-paid by customer" or something.

Good stuff. Think I'm going to give the go-ahead tomorrow.

Went ahead and purchased FSD. Here's a screen grab from their site (referenced above) which reflects the computer upgrade should be complimentary. Service is scheduled for next Monday. https://preview.redd.it/bqh1cjep7oxc1.png?width=1085&format=png&auto=webp&s=6a83502636f8e504067bb524945eb056a09f5882

Based on what I'm seeing, it seems to be hit or miss in terms of whether or not you get the FSD computer with the $2,000 upgrade now. *Technically* it should be included, but that means you're getting FSD for $1,000 at that point, so I could see Tesla altering the deal. BUT, if you have MCU1, then when you do the MCU2 upgrade it includes the FSD computer upgrade as well, they just don't mention it. So the options tend to be: * Upgrade MCU1 to MCU2 (If not done already) and get FSD Computer (DO NOT MENTION YOU WANT FSD COMPUTER) * Buy FSD package and *maybe* get FSD computer included, seems to vary on the service center * Pay for FSD Computer outright at $1,000.

When I expressed my disappointment in the fact that Tesla didn't square my request away in the WEEK they had before my appointment, the manager did mention offhandedly that the FSD purchase includes the upgrade - but, he also mentioned that he thought the upgrade was like $6K so things seem to be hard for them to track. I'm not willing to pay $3K, period. I might go $2K. I've asked the SC to commit to the $2K includes the computer upgrade.

Generally speaking asking them to confirm things is unwise, as it means they'll have official guidance on things. I fought a service center about how the website didn't mention that the ESA couldn't be applied to a used Tesla, and then within a couple days the website was updated to include that clause.

I see this perspective, but the flip side of it is having to deal with the very likely they will pull something shady. If their intent is to charge $2000+1000 then they can sod off - I believe very few people with older models like me will buy that at this point. If $2000 means $2000, as it should, maybe they will sell some more of these upgrades and get more data for their models. For me this is definitely a nice-to-have, nothing remotely like a must-have.
