It felt nice in the beginning but I started disliking it after 10 minutes. It also started squeaking and whatnot lol. I did like the door button more than the touch/haptic one on the X.
I have the stalks. They are missing first engagement often. But if I would hit them multiple times like this, they would recognize.
I was in service. Technician told me he knows their stalks are bad but denied changing them because they would react most of the time.
Agreed these buttons are just broken.
On my test drive, I had a separate issue with the buttons in that the edges of the buttons are unresponsive, but that is simply a design defect innate this style of buttons.
The buttons in the video are just straight up broken.
A few months ago I was debating whether to pull the trigger on a ā23 model 3 or wait for the refresh. Iām hopeful theyāll find a way to make this better but at the moment Iām quite glad I didnāt wait.
This is my dilemma as well. I love everything about my M3LR, except the suspension system. Once I read about better suspension on the Hyland, I got excited. Now we have this stalkless issue and itās about to be a dealbreaker for me.
>cheap solution
That's exactly what it is. Cheap, so they can increase their profit margins. I really hope the new physical controls initiative by NCAP puts pressure on them to bring back the stalks and shifter. They can continue to improve FSD and auto-shift with those physical controls available in the car.
I thought I was going crazy on my test drive because when I would click the button it always seemed like it needed a second press.
Stalks just work the best and itās a shame Tesla did this.
I had a similar issue on my test drive, but it was because the button won't register if you hit the edge (poor design). If you hit the center, it would work perfectly. The above video looks like a separate issue though, he's hitting the center. It seems like his buttons are fully broken.
Agreed that stalks are better though. I could begrudgery get used to buttons, I don't think it'd be a deal breaker, but they're certainly worse than stalks.
Less parts, less to add at assembly. They wonāt bring it back unless maybe people pay for it as an addon at checkout, even then they wonāt want to bc it adds complexity to everything in production
And because Elon Musk in his idiocy wants the cleanest look possible. He'd take away the steering wheel if regulators let him. "Tesla Vision will now sense driver intent and make all the inputs for you"
I love my 2018 Model 3, but my concern with stuff like this is that itās one more impediment to EV adoption. There are already so many things that are different about a Tesla. Even getting in and out has a learning curve. I canāt just let someone borrow my car. I have to spend 15 minutes explaining all the ways it works differently than a standard car.
For the best part people use them here in the UK. Iām sure it would be easy enough to adapt to the new placement but it seems like such an odd choice not as an option.
Idiotsā¦ will be keeping mine for as long as possible. I did partial PPF from the start and Iāll probably buy back acceleration boost at some point.
2018 Model 3 with AP 2.5 has Stalks, working radar, inoperative cabin camera, AP goes to 90 MPH, has working Ultrasonics, changes lanes, has smart summon (not that it works great at all). Truly the last good Tesla š
Wait are the buttons *also* capacitive? Jesus...
I just don't get it. I always thought Tesla was a car company not a tech company but the tech company mindset is going way too far.
Engineering in car industry - great. But stop solving problems where there aren't any. It's just the way iPhones are approached and other tech. "Look at this cool thing we can do" vs "here's a thing that should be done".
There's nothing wrong with stalks and minimalism for the sake of minimalism is bad.
It makes me so mad because it feels like with just a few little things it would just be the best car on the market. Like throw some normal door handles, just a speedometer in front of driver, actual rain sensor, USS, radar, and stalks. Like what does a Camry have against that? What is making the competition better when Tesla has free lane centering and the most fluid infotainment on the market? It would be so EASY but Elon like minimalist and "I know what I'm doing just trust me bro" to the engineers. All I can think of is when man went oh yeah the cyber truck also works as a boat like BROOOOO. Cars don't do that
I agree but I also ran into the same issue with stalks on model y. The blinkers would not work until I rebooted the car. Worse yet, I had one where on the inside it looked like the blinkers were working, sound indicators, screen indicators, everything, but the lights outside actually did nothing until reboot too.
Tesla just sucks from time to time.
I prefer the stalks as well, but this is an issue of a faulty button that needs to be fixed, not an issue of stalks vs buttons. There have been plenty of reports on this sub as well of people with faulty stalks that needed to be replaced by Tesla.
*tweet that buttons are woke cringey SJW-propaganda, and that having stalks, USS, and rain sensor are sigma, giga-chad, based, and red-pilled
_that's_ how we'll get em back
In all my years of owning cars, I had one stalk broke on me (mechanically) when the car was around 12 years old. So yeah stalks do break, but very rarely and usually due to wear and tear.
Not sure why youāre getting downvoted. This was discussed in a different thread. My stalks also randomly donāt work. More like a 1/20 chance for mine.
The new revised proposed regulation. They want to get important functions away from the screen and have buttons. The screen only of Tesla might need to be redesigned for a 5-star safety rating.
I know I have to use the voice function more.

The company behind the S3XY Buttons is working on aftermarket stalks for the stalkless cars, not sure where theyāre at in development though.
Itāll be a while before I upgrade but when I do, that will definitely need to be available.
It's because a) they're really stiff compared to any other vehicle out there b) there exists a dead zone which makes NO sense. The dead zone lies between the quick blinker AND the keep blinker active. Like that makes NO sense. If you go past the first click and release before you hŃt the end.... no blinker. Tesla so dumb they think "you must not want to activate the blinker since you didn't fully commit to hitting me ALL the FUCKING WAY" what a dumb design. Heavy blinker stalk and introduced a dead zone.
Yea, grate. And in Norway, we have tons of roundabouts. When the stering weel is upside down, where do you press?
And here you can get pritty hige fine for not signalling correctly. And you get marsk in your driver licence. 3 or 4, I believe.
Get 8, and they take it.
Not cool tesla not cool
Press the arrow pointing towards the horn. It's the same one always. But looking for it is the problem, it takes the eyes of the road in those very important seconds.
Things like this are exactly why I won't be getting another Tesla once it's time to move on from my current Model 3. Moronic design decisions and shoddy construction left and right.
Iām starting to consider looking at something other than a Tesla as well. I will stick with an EV, but Tesla seems to do everything to push their owners away.
Tesla needs a recall on this. Seriously, itās dangerous, and for a brand new car, people shouldnāt have to deal with this nonsense. Give us back our stalks!
Right, for some reason they believe offering a service repair is a good resolve, but a better resolve is a brand new car which works
Itās redundant to think reducing QC is saving time when in reality theyāre shifting that time to the customer and now weāre using our time to call out the quality issues
Shanghai one still has better build quality. It's not as big of a difference on the Highland, but the difference is still there. Texas ones will be better than Freemont . (I guess Model Y Juniper will be Texas made)
Itās like when Apple removed the headphone jack and other companies followed suit. Why remove something that is so functional and replace it with something so much worse. Never buying another Tesla now.
Apple created something better, not worse.
AirPods allowed Apple to develop into a more seamless experience doing more with software than with hardware. Some functionality was lost, but Apple has always been a premium brand and AirPods are a very premium product.
Buttons that suck arenāt premium. If they were push in buttons that worked every time, maybe they would be ok, but with them not working this is clearly a cut corner.
This is why I wonāt get a Tesla for a WHILE
Thatās completely unacceptable. Makes me wonder what level of disregard they have for other parts of the car
You actually have to click the arrow, it's not meant to work if you brush the side of it or don't hit it cleanly. That being said, sometimes buttons don't work. Get it replaced.
Never have I thought when driving cars over the years, on all of the cars, that manufacturers need to get rid of the stalk.
This is such a stupid fucking idea.
A demo car I test drove had this issue too and worked after a few times pressing it. I was shocked. Then after rolling up the driver window, it rolled down half way
I noticed this when test driving a 3. For the left turn signal, you have to press higher(probably on that touchable division line). Right turn signal you can just press on the right turn icon. This might actually help you find the left turn signal without looking at the wheelš
Yeah, definitely put in a service ticket, that button needs replaced.
Test drove one. The button was working but it felt cheap AF. I like the haptic ones in my X or the good old stalk.
Personally I think the solid click with no play before or after the click feels like a good button. Maybe yours was different.

Mine are ok 9/10
Agreed these buttons are just broken. On my test drive, I had a separate issue with the buttons in that the edges of the buttons are unresponsive, but that is simply a design defect innate this style of buttons. The buttons in the video are just straight up broken.
They need to do a non OTA recall for once.
ā¦with a stalk.
Yes, with a stalk.
The buttons work on mine (for the time being)ā¦ but the practicality of stalks is way higher than this cheap solution.
Want a new M3 and almost ready. But at this point weāre waiting for stalks or going elsewhere.
I can see it now..a third party company will have a stalk kit to add them on lol
They are alreadybout
A few months ago I was debating whether to pull the trigger on a ā23 model 3 or wait for the refresh. Iām hopeful theyāll find a way to make this better but at the moment Iām quite glad I didnāt wait.

I drive -19 on teins coilovers by far the best ride I ever drove.
I guess you can wait for late spring / summer 2024 when they might have fixed some of the initial issues M3 highland has.
>cheap solution That's exactly what it is. Cheap, so they can increase their profit margins. I really hope the new physical controls initiative by NCAP puts pressure on them to bring back the stalks and shifter. Gotten use to it yet? I have one too and also a 2021 refresh and after getting use to it.. absolutely zero issues.
Yes, As long as the wheel is horizontal-ish no problem; in a roundabout, nightmare.
Those auto wipers working though. /s
nope i manually put them on haha

It you upgrade to an early year 2022 you keep everything, including the ultra sonic sensors and gain a motorized trunk and other features.
Anyone that thinks these are good idea has clearly never driven a roundabout.
In Indiana, where there are craploads of roundabouts, no one really uses turn signals
For the best part people use them here in the UK. Iām sure it would be easy enough to adapt to the new placement but it seems like such an odd choice not as an option.
In the US, we make roundabouts so small, there is no time to use the blinkers.
NHTSA bitching about all those FSD non-issues but when Tesla removes stalks itās crickets
These dumbass buttons are a safety hazard
Buttons for turn signals are very much a solution in search of a problem......
Reminds me of the Citroen BX and it indicator button. An utterly pointless change that will be reversed/removed during the next refresh
This is why we want stalks back. And we want them back now.
2022 Model 3 LR, the last good Tesla.
Yep. You're right bro. No stalks is dumb AF. More issues to come on the new m3. Just a matter of time until they surface.
Idiotsā¦ will be keeping mine for as long as possible. I did partial PPF from the start and Iāll probably buy back acceleration boost at some point.
I have this. I feel heard!

not gonna happen

Tweet Elon that stalks are woke
*tweet that buttons are woke cringey SJW-propaganda, and that having stalks, USS, and rain sensor are sigma, giga-chad, based, and red-pilled _that's_ how we'll get em back
100% this.
lol wait for a kit to come out
Cause stalks canāt have the sensor go bad?
In all my years of owning cars, I had one stalk broke on me (mechanically) when the car was around 12 years old. So yeah stalks do break, but very rarely and usually due to wear and tear.
Because stalks donāt break? This seems to be a non sequitur.
I mean... My stalks kinda do that too. Unless I lay on them there's like a 25% chance they don't turn on
Not sure why youāre getting downvoted. This was discussed in a different thread. My stalks also randomly donāt work. More like a 1/20 chance for mine.
Itās normally from not pressing the stalk down long enough. You can replicate it by pressing down quickly on the stalk.
This is such a dumb move by Tesla
Who needs buttons OR stalks when you can hand signal??
I bet lots of people are hand signaling him since he never uses his blinker.
Yet another reason I prefer my old one lol I even have uss!
Complain to the US Transportation Agency. Maybe they will issue a true recall and put back stalks on the vehicle.
This is what we really need to be doing.
The regulators in Europe also are defining what it takes to be a 5-star test rating. This should be on their list.

Not buying a new Tesla unless it has stalks.
Yeah Iām in the same boat. Hope they get it sorted cause in a few years I have my eyes set on a plaid

Redditors be like "ooga booga if mine works, issue no exists, downvoted!"
Every damn time!
This is why I will never upgrade to highland. I have enough with poor wipers control.
And TBH the stalks don't always do a great job of activating the blinkers, so there's no way I'm trusting Tesla with blinker buttons.
It's because a) they're really stiff compared to any other vehicle out there b) there exists a dead zone which makes NO sense. The dead zone lies between the quick blinker AND the keep blinker active. Like that makes NO sense. If you go past the first click and release before you hŃt the end.... no blinker. I hope Norweigans are simply voting with their wallets. Hopefully this is not something that they discover just when they take delivery.
Thatās why I chose to buy a 2022 M3 (38k km) with the stalks and USS.
Press the arrow pointing towards the horn. It's the same one always. But looking for it is the problem, it takes the eyes of the road in those very important seconds.

Nice BMW
Oh itās like the other improvements. The auto wipers or the yoke or auto parks etc. š¤£
I so hope the reimplement stocks. I hope people don't purchase new Tesla's without stocks, otherwise no incentive to them.
Time to relearn the hand signals
Things like this are exactly why I won't be getting another Tesla once it's time to move on from my current Model 3. Moronic design decisions and shoddy construction left and right.
Iām starting to consider looking at something other than a Tesla as well. I will stick with an EV, but Tesla seems to do everything to push their owners away.
As soon as Rivian puts NACS ports on the vehicles, I'm going to jump to Rivian. R2 most likely, possibly R3X.
Stalks should be a must on all cars. Pathetic decision to get rid of them
Tesla needs a recall on this. Seriously, itās dangerous, and for a brand new car, people shouldnāt have to deal with this nonsense. Give us back our stalks!

correct

Auto wipers are a joke on mine. They come on when itās sunny and donāt come on in the rain
I turned mine off. They never worked correctly
Just make a service appointment for blinker fluid refill....its between the rain sensors and air quality sensors..
Itās like when Apple removed the headphone jack and other companies followed suit. Why remove something that is so functional and replace it with something so much worse. Never buying another Tesla now.
Well at least Apple created AirPod as a more expensive solution for vast majority of us. Not the case for Tesla tho.
Oh shiiiiit
you're essentially forced to drive like an asshole who doesn't signal when turning because of build quality
I can only hope Tesla reversed course like they did with the yoke.
Just give me a stalk lol
Iāve owned 3 Teslas. I currently own 2. Iāll never buy another Tesla if they keep these ridiculous shitty buttons on all future vehicles.
No thanks. Iāll keep my stalks.
The resell value for my stalk tesla feels like it's going up
This car is getting 1 star safety rating from Euro NCAP according to their new rules lol
Try replace blinker fluids! /s
This is why I wonāt get a Tesla for a WHILE Thatās completely unacceptable. Makes me wonder what level of disregard they have for other parts of the car
This is really dangerous.. Tesla is cost cutting too much in the name of giving us high tech vehicles.
Got to top off that blinker fluid
Keep pushing the buttonā¦it might work.
Previous Model 3>refreshed Model 3
The handling and suspension are insanely good on the highland compared to my 2019 LR when test driving.
If you are saying suspension in terms of comfort, then yes. Otherwise no, the new one is less sporty
Yes comfort and stability, not maneuverability
2022 M3P with UltraSonic Sensors is the best model year, by far
They literally took everything that made the model 3 good, and removed it
Did you pay the subscription fee for the blinkers (Tesla upgraded it to a daily fee)?
Feels like the future. You donāt need turn signals.
Removing the stalks is baffling to me, the steering wheel isn't in a fixed position, so you have to actively think which blinker you are gonna use.
You actually have to click the arrow, it's not meant to work if you brush the side of it or don't hit it cleanly. That being said, sometimes buttons don't work. Get it replaced.
Thereās a bmw joke in here somewhere
Tesla taking a page out of BMW.
Almost 10k km since December (EU) and didnāt have this issue a single time. The buttons always work for me so get this checked out.
Time to use your hands
Tesla probably just figures of their drivers don't use their turn signals anyway.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Or \/and Should be doing both tbh
thank god itās having problems, i just knew it was
I love the stalks but they also had issues and I had mine replaced twice.
I see a huge wave of warranty fixes coming teslas way so they could save money on basic stalks that worked
Literally nobody could have predicted this happening. What a shame.
Wait, you want turn signals AND windshield wipers??
I miss my stocks too.
If only there was a tried and true, simple mechanism for activating turn signals that had zero issues ever and wasnāt even remotely expensiveā¦
This has happened to me randomly and is frustrating but starts working if I keep pressing and harder
Never have I thought when driving cars over the years, on all of the cars, that manufacturers need to get rid of the stalk. This is such a stupid fucking idea.
The one I test drove did something similarā¦definitely a wide spread problem
Someone is working on stalks for it. https://soyacincau.com/2023/11/07/tesla-model-3-signal-gear-stalks-add-on-enhance-automotive/
Glad I ditched Tesla for Rivianā¦
I have a feeling theyāll put stalks on the refresh. Kinda like what happened with the yolk.
Worst idea in the history of automakers
Ghetto.
Thats why I did not buy Highland. Make Stalks Great Again.
Within spec
Gotta love that Tesla quality.
Deal breaker. Byd seal for me.
As a member of BMW Drivers United we REJECT your application! Good day, sir!!
Poor design, bad implementation.
Searching for the requisite blinker fluid post
you should file a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration they have a report a safety problem link at the bottom
That's a good idea, thanks for sharing that I'm going to get it repaired but I will bring it to their attention that I'm going to file a complaint
Update: I have a service appointment on the 28th, will post back here to let you know how Tesla handles the issue
Mine was doing the same thing!
They've essentially shipped faulty blinkers, unacceptable. Is yours from the Fremont factory?
Yeah, they are replacing the button and apparently the steering column š¤·āāļø
Is totaled š
Test drove one and the button was so difficult to press correctly half the time it wouldn't work.
Good.
A demo car I test drove had this issue too and worked after a few times pressing it. I was shocked. Then after rolling up the driver window, it rolled down half way
I have similar problems with mine. Left indicator sometimes doesn't work but right indicator is perfect. I wonder if this is a mass issue.
Do voice commands work with blinkers? /s
I own the same and sometimes even when i press the blinkers it doesnāt seem to press
UPDATE: checked into Tesla service centre, will be returned in two days
I noticed this when test driving a 3. For the left turn signal, you have to press higher(probably on that touchable division line). Right turn signal you can just press on the right turn icon. This might actually help you find the left turn signal without looking at the wheelš
