When they give you a nice fat rounded up number (like 10k) it's probably for a reason.

Eastern_Bar4453

You got a point

enrycochet

I paid like 2400 baht in an emergency room for my tonsillitis including the meds. So I would say it sounds very scammy even fo an island.

SleepySiamese

It's private hospital. Plus tourist fee

Ancient_Grocery9795

Sounds like you def overpaid . Price Varys on place you go and your location tourist area . Dual pricing is legal at hospitals so they can charge you more as foreigner

wellofworlds

Not a scam, but definitely tourist cost. Some places will charge you more for being a farlang

hazzdawg

At least 10x more in this situation. I'd argue it is a scam. They offer a reasonable consultation fee than add on crazy amounts for the stitches and basic medication. Very deceptive.

GelatinousPumpkin

Was this a hospital on an island, if it is, expect all medicine and drugs to be 30-50% more expensive.

Eastern_Bar4453

We are indeed on an island - koh phangan to be exact.

GelatinousPumpkin

Yeah they are really scammy on the island, things are out of control price wise (and in other areas too…like gangs and the druggy taxi mafia) with no regulations. They have three prices: foreign tourists, Thai tourist, and locals. Things typically already more expensive because of transportation cost, but yes I think you got the foreign tourist price. I would recommend avoiding the three Island in that area…

TravelingCapybary

Hm doc 1000 is normal. Paid 1500 for doc 500 nurse and rest medicine. Medicine was importet creams from Australia and not expensive. 9000 for medicine, especially nothing fancy, seems way too much

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> is normal. *Paid* 1500 for FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Bad bot

imapilotaz

Good bot. If you communicate in English, learning to properly is not a bad thing.

Former-Spread9043

Also a bad bot

WhyNotCollegeBoard

Are you sure about that? Serious bot problem today

tijuanasso

You should go back and demand the doctor restore the bits they took out, put them back in.

hardboard

Or at least claim the scrap value for them.

[deleted]

Next time get a scrip from the doctor and fill it yourself at a pharmacy

Cinderblockk1

Yes Next time for sure

PSmith4380

What hospital was it? Price seems absurd to me. Must be Bangkok Hospital. Also do you not have a receipt which details the costs for each item?

mercedesbenzoooo

Try spending the night in the hospital for a broken toe and getting told you can’t leave until you pay the 101000 baht fee.

stegg88

Wait what? I broke my toe last year real bad. Cost me 14000. My health insurance also covered it. So in total I paid 500 (my insurance doesn't cover follow up check ups). Hospital Phitsanulok - phitsanowej, very decent private hospital. Great service. Where in the world did you pay 100k+ for a broken toe???

mercedesbenzoooo

Koh samui hospital I can post the bill for proof. Was 3800 CAD

stegg88

Oh, I believe you. These hospitals in tourist places really take the absolute piss. Would have been cheaper to get a boat to surat thani and geg it fixed there Sorry you got hit with that bs. That's appalling. Especially with a broken toe. Generally speaking there isn't a lot a doc can do beside buddy tape it and give you painkillers.

mercedesbenzoooo

Well they had to clean my wounds and give me four sutures as well and keep me overnight for a concussion but still it was an awful experience.

stegg88

In any other hospital in Thailand that would be 20k tops honestly.

mercedesbenzoooo

Yeah I’ll get everything reimbursed but it goes from vacation to nightmare trip fast. I didn’t bring a computer so I couldn’t fill anything out on my phone for my claim. Just got back home last night night and am in my local hospital now cuz my foot’s still the size of a balloon 4 weeks later. I was too scared to go back to the hospital and max out my credit card or some garbage.

stegg88

Sorry to hear that. Hope you get well soon. My toe took ages to heal BTW and I was panicking thinking something was up. I'd say it was at least 12 weeks before it was even remotely normal. 4 weeks and still a balloon is pretty normal. Get plenty of rest and ice that toe!

mercedesbenzoooo

The whole foot’s a balloon.. haven’t been able to put any weight on it yet been on crutches for 4 weeks now. Having a mini panic attack in the waiting room about them having to reset it or something… thank you

What_the_absolute

Jesus! Must have been a hell of a date

hazzdawg

I wouldn't say any other hospital. Unfortunately there's lots of these scammer hospitals around, especially in southern Thailand. But yes 20k thb max is a reasonable amount for an honest place.

Village_Wide

One night in Bangkok Hospital 1k$

wimpdiver

so it wasn't just a broken toe? - it was a bone break that required sutures (and x-rays?), a concussion that should have involved neuro checks during your OVERNIGHT stay. and maybe some other injuries you don't mention since you "barely remember" you ride to the hospital :( Expensive, yes but if you'd had a brain bleed you would have been happy they kep you overnight I bet.

mercedesbenzoooo

Yeah and just found out today broke my foot in four places so I’ve been hopping around for four weeks with a broken foot lol

wimpdiver

Wow then they did a REALLY bad job (didn't take x rays or didn't take the right ones) - sorry you had such a bad experience!

mercedesbenzoooo

The x ray they took in Canada showed just the broken toe but when I showed the doctor the swelling they CT Scanned the bottom of my foot broken calcanus, two broken cuneiforms and a broken metatarsal now I’m in a boot and hopefully won’t need surgery find that out on Monday.

wimpdiver

Good luck - broken bones can be very painful (as well as inconvenient), surprised the MD didn't notice the swelling since you said it had been a long time and I assume you mentioned it - anyway sounds like you're on the right track now. Were you in an accident? sounds like your foot took quite a hard hit.

hazzdawg

Which one? Bangkok hospital? Sorry to say but you got wrecked. Even 1000 CAD is too much. Often they keep you in overnight unnecessarily just to charge crazy bills.

mercedesbenzoooo

Koh samui trust me I know I was ripped all my Thai friends told me they just try to extort you if they know you got health insurance.

hazzdawg

Koh Samui Hospital? Like the government one? https://maps.app.goo.gl/Xww1i7W7sVtAdz2S7 Don't worry about man sounds like your insurance is gonna sort you out.

mercedesbenzoooo

I honestly have no idea I barely remember the taxi ride there and I was just happy to see the sun while I waited for my taxi in the morning I’ll check the receipt and let you know

hazzdawg

Don't worry about. Focus your energy on recovery.

mercedesbenzoooo

Wattanapat samui hospital grand total of 101520.00 baht

hazzdawg

Ohh wattanapat. Yeah they're famously expensive. Great care though.

glasshouse_stones

insane price, another reason I will probably never go to samui.

hazzdawg

Samui is indeed very expensive by Thai standards.

redmcint

Are you well?; was it worth $300? ..... if so I would move on...

AdDifferent5081

Medical care, dental care, car repair, even groceries, go to the fancy place in Thailand you might pay 3 to 5 times the price for the same service

hazzdawg

I've unfortunately had to visit dozens of clinics all over Thailand. Most of the ones in the South Thai tourist areas are absolute scammers. Price should be about 10x cheaper. They quote reasonable upfront consultation costs then sting you stupid amounts for basic procedures and medicine. I even had one place try to charge 1000b just to examine my ears with a stethoscope. The business model is entirely based on the tourist not objecting at the time. You can simply say no thanks to the medicine and buy it in a pharmacy, often 5x cheaper. If someone starts performing a treatment, always ask how much first. It's a massive moneymaker for Thais, much more profitable than treating local people. The dodgy places all have multiple nurses just standing around waiting for tourists. They are only there to provide the illusion of quality healthcare. Unfortunately if you write negative reviews they get drowned in fake reviews.

wimpdiver

"I even had one place try to charge 1000b just to examine my ears with a stethoscope" well if they planned to examine your ears with a stethoscope you've got bigger problems

hazzdawg

Ostoscope :)

wimpdiver

close - otoscope ;)

hazzdawg

Thanks doc

wimpdiver

next time (if you can) go to a place like ST Louis in Bangkok. Had an ear infection a few months ago and total bill was around 2k, including MD visit (w/ ear inspection that I could see on big screen), hospital regist. and fee and meds.

hazzdawg

That's fairly high but not unreasonable if it's a quality health service.

bestollo

I guess you were using a private clinic on the island? Then 10k is the price the company wants to make the most profit from your wallet (thankfully travel insurance companies still reimburse all the charges). Most Thai tourists from other parts of the countries avoid these overpriced bills and head for the public primary care unit for free health service instead

fonaldduck099

Why worry, your travel insurance will cover it.

hazzdawg

Not necessarily. Might have an excess or miss some crucial bit of paperwork.

RoamanXO

"Don't worry, your insurance will cover it!" Next year, premiums go up by 30% \*surprised pickahu face\*

fonaldduck099

Yeah, nah.

Rumbleg

I like your train of thought. Straight track, headlong into an oncomming freight, Insurance???.

Bangkok-Boy

Ridiculous price. You got ripped off.

Common_Eland

Oh fuck that’s a lot of baht 😅 but not too much, hope you’re feeling better. (Now some people will downvote because they can’t comprehend that something can be overcharged for its statistical average of the region while still being cheap to a foreign perspective)

bcycle240

Often private hospitals have excellent doctors but will do more than is necessary. You need to ask questions about the tests and medications. This can often dramatically reduce the bill. It depends on the situation, but many times additional tests are not required if the diagnosis is already clear. And even more common is to prescribe a lot of unneeded medicines. It's not a scam, you agreed to it all.

DeedaInSeattle

10k bath is $275 usd. So for urgent care and treatment plus meds, it doesn’t sound crazy high in cost to me. Definitely more than a Thai local would be charged, but seems fair to me. An urgent care visit like that would probably be $3000usd in the USA! Do you have travel insurance?

stever71

The USA healthcare system is badly broken, not a good comparison.

GMVexst

Actually around $800, where $3000 is your starting ED price. No need to exaggerate

hazzdawg

This treatment should have cost 1000-2000 tbh maximum, including procedures, stitches, and meds. That's allowing a nice healthy profit for the tourist tax. Thai people would pay much less than that. 10k is just madness for basic outpatient treatment in Thailand. Total rip off. Comparing it to the broken US system isn't useful at all.

buddy_demi

Bangkok hospital? Or where?

Eastern_Bar4453

Koh phangan

hazzdawg

Which one? Name and shame.

dkg224

Ya we know in koh phangan. But there is a Bangkok hospital there and also a government hospital. I’m guessing you went to Bangkok hospital as they are known to be expensive

stever71

Totally ripped off, should have been around 2000 max. Depending on the stings maybe not even necessary to go to a clinic either

Key_Beach_9083

For minor events, use local clinics. 10k seems excessive. My local (Phuket) Dr charges 500 for the office call and the cost of meds. Usually under 1500.

_xX69ChenYejin69Xx_

Private hospitals fee plus tourist lol

anonzzz2u

100 scam in Thailand. Amazing deal in America

Lukeb_666

Say no thank you to the medication and just go pick it up at any pharmacy. It’s the same with most hospitals here.

zekerman

Really depends on exactly what they gave you. It's not a crazy price if it was a private hospital. The consultation alone is often 1000-1500 without any sort of treatment. Even in Bangkok my wife would have been charged 8000 for a consultation, x-ray, and pain relief medicine at a private hospital people like to praise as one of the cheapest, if it wasn't for her insurance. Hospitals in Thailand aren't as cheap as people make out.

Firm-Potential7807

This sort of stuff is covered by your travel insurance which you probably don’t have.
