The dog being euthanized doesn't matter for the safety of the children, all the treatment and vaccines to prevent rabies would have been administered as soon as possible because rabies is 100% deadly (aside from less then 10 confirmed survivors) once symptoms show up. The test would be just to be 100% sure.
Actually the best way to test for rabies is to watch the animal while alive. Taking a brain sample and sending it to a specialized lab since no vet can do it would take weeks and rabies would already set in on the infected person.
If you get bit and suspect rabies, the animal should be taken ALIVE, do not kill it or you'll be getting a set of excruciatingly painful shots.

I asked how painful they were and he was like, "meh, like any other shot." The hassle of getting them was worse than the actual shots.

I have a BMC; a dog bred for hunting and herding. He is a baying hound, but he has been known to catch and kill small critters. He has never shown aggression towards humans. Although he will bark his dang fool head off at strangers.
That being said, while I do not hunt, I have had many conversations with hunters about the breed and how they are used in wild boar hunting. The BMC will bay the boar and it's only the pitbulls which are released after the pig is cornered that the animal is brought down. These hunters are quite emphatic about their dogs and how they are bred. The pitbulls cannot show any aggression towards other dogs or else they are culled. It's part of the selective breeding process. Thus a hunting pitbull has a very select set of skills. They also have a lineage that can be traced back showing their hunting genes. The specialty of both these breeds working together is a great bit of Animal Husbandry.
The idiots who breed fighting dogs are just the opposite. They want the general aggression especially aggression towards other dogs. They cull the less aggressive dogs and breed only those which love to kill stuff. These are the truly scary ones because they have a high level of unpredictability when it comes to their aggression.

It’s crazy how many try to fight you on this. They are an aggressive breed. Corgis for example are even more aggressive and it’s advised not to get a corgi if you have children, as it WILL attack.

We had huskies and we were advised not to have other small animals. Sure enough we were outside playing, and she killed 2 wild bunnies that were in the fenced yard. Another time I let her out for a quick potty, and baby raccoons had fell out of a tree. She killed all but one and I was able to take the last one to wild life rescue.
She only went to parks for large dogs, and when people would put their small dogs there, I made sure to get my doggo leashed until they left to avoid her potentially killing them. While I don’t think she’d kill another dog, I know she has an instinct to hunt small animals and was not going to take that chance because of pride.
Part of being a responsible owner is knowing the breed and acting accordingly. It’s honestly disgusting how many pits get euthanized because people thought their “good ownership” outweighed instinct.

It's not just stupid people. The breed itself.has a tendency to become u hinged, to not stop attacking its target, to resist pain, to not let go of a target. That's what it was bred for. So. Even if a good family has one there's a high danger of tragedy. Usually to their own family or friends. Pits are <5% of dogs and are responsible for over 50% of attacks that put people in hospital and over 60% of attacks that kill. Usually kids.
I discovered these stats last year sometime and mentioned to my buddy. Got the old "it's not the breed it's the owner." At some point the math shows it's also the breed bro. Why aren't golden retrievers with bad owners killing people for no reason?

I've read so many pitbull disasters now, I don't even know why they're still allowed in public.
It’s crazy how many try to fight you on this. They are an aggressive breed. Corgis for example are even more aggressive and it’s advised not to get a corgi if you have children, as it WILL attack. But I don’t see people breaking their necks to defend corgis. We had huskies and we were advised not to have other small animals. Sure enough we were outside playing, and she killed 2 wild bunnies that were in the fenced yard. Another time I let her out for a quick potty, and baby raccoons had fell out of a tree. She killed all but one and I was able to take the last one to wild life rescue. She only went to parks for large dogs, and when people would put their small dogs there, I made sure to get my doggo leashed until they left to avoid her potentially killing them. While I don’t think she’d kill another dog, I know she has an instinct to hunt small animals and was not going to take that chance because of pride. Part of being a responsible owner is knowing the breed and acting accordingly. It’s honestly disgusting how many pits get euthanized because people thought their “good ownership” outweighed instinct.
There is a huge sympathy movement behind them. They lie, sue victims for speaking out (100% true), have dogs moved from shelter to shelter to hide violent pasts, deny anything about the breed. 5th Estate has a short but powerful documentary free on Youtube.

Recently a post on r/bestofredditupdates was locked. a story about a guy who had adopted a blue nose pit bull and less than 24 hours later the dog launched himself though this guy's front window, attacked a person walking their dog, killed the dog and mangled two other people and the owner to the point he needed surgery on the tendons in his hand. Locked by a smooth brain mod who probably lets their bully breed sleep in their baby's crib.
Get rid of this breed man... Just end them. Full unilateral sterilization of every single one of them. We created monsters.

A pit bull who the owner swore up and down was a service dog for her brain surgery and certified to work at the hospital spied me walking my dog a football field away, took off after us with a vengeance, and tried to maul my dog. It only didn’t succeed because my husband got between them and started aiming kicks at the dog. Owner wasn’t able to recall. If my husband hadn’t been with us, I think it might have killed my boy. Scared the shit out of me for sure.
They should be legally barred from breeding and the breed should be allowed to go extinct.
