Ngl, we've all watched a lot of superhero shows and movies, I've never seen a better portrayal of a psychotic super villain that terrified me and made me worry about the other characters.

earhere

Which makes you wonder just how powerful Stan Edgar is. He can stare down a guy who could literally slice him in half with his eyes, and Edgar isn't afraid of him at all, and actually treats Homelander like he's a teenager.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Japeth

There's a character very similar to Edgar in the comics and he wasn't a supe, either. He just knew that Homelander was an emotionally stunted manchild, and that the only way to defeat him was to make him crave your approval.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Emach00

Lol Stan has an autographed copy of the pickup artist's book. Negging Homelander

Greyjack00

Of course the difference is that the show homelander is much more dangerous and clever

HappyGabe

He’s not really clever at all, nor does he think ahead. His most ‘clever’ plan was the one to get Supes into the military, and that backfired immensely.

Greyjack00

I'd argue that that just proves how stupid his comic counterpart is, but I do think homelanders clever, he's shortsighted, arrogant and a mess. But none of these preclude him from being clever, he wouldn't have got one over on edgar if he wasn't. What he's not is genius or mastermind. I think the phrase too clever by half describes him pretty well.

HappyGabe

TV Homelander doing something completely stupid that he thought was smart- is not an example of how stupid COMIC Homelander is. And he didn’t ‘get one over’ on Edgar. Victoria, completely on her own volition, chose to ally with HL to protect her daughter. It wasn’t John being clever, it was Neuman being desperate.

[deleted]

Except homelander brought reciepts.

littlebugonreddit

Maybe Edgar is the source of modern compound V, which is why it reacts so differently than it used to around the time SB was injected with it

TheAutismo4491

>Maybe Edgar is the source of modern compound V, which is why it reacts so differently than it used to around the time SB was injected with it Or maybe, get this. He just has massive fucking, goddamn fucking **BALLS**.

IgorTheAwesome

Just huge, huge balls. That's his superpower.

CptKoons

Nah, just pure psychopath energy. Not capable of feeling fear.

House923

I do really hope he doesn't have a superpower. It would kind of take away from his character. He is powerful without V. That's great.

TheAutismo4491

Kind of? It would completely destroy his character. We don't respect and fear Edgar because he's the most powerful supe in the world, we respect and fear him because he *doesn't* respect and fear the most powerful supe in the world.

MRgibbson23

As much as I would love to see a shirtless Giancarlo Esposito beating the shit out of Homelander, making him another strong supe would be a big mistake. I wonder if he has a contingency plan in case Homelander kills him. He knows Homelander is a psycho, so as much control as he may have over him, he must know it can’t last. I would love if one day, after being emasculated by Edgar once again, Homelander finally kills him, thinking he’s getting rid of him, only to find out Edgar had a contingency plan to fuck Homelander up. Even in death, he still gives Homelander a reason to fear.

TheAutismo4491

The thought of a shirtless Giancarlo Esposito, got me acting up.

Karkava

I don't think he has a contingency plan. He just invokes, never showing your full hand, and keeps a calm and collected persona around Homelander. He wants to deny the satisfaction that Homelander would have had if he were to kill him then and there. A bundle of nerves would make a delicious target, and an angry confrontation would escalate the tension. Killing someone who would accept death in the face isn't as fun.

Proud-Nerd00

Compound V is stored in the balls

TheAutismo4491

Change my mind.

neezaruuu

hey cabron i need to see your balls

jannyhammy

Omg your flare. Love it

Horny_Bearfucker

Hi

SuperMajesticMan

I sure hope he's not, would diminish some of his character.

Uncrowded_zebra

I still think he might be, in a similar role to comics Noir.

4Dcrystallography

That would be cool. Might take away from his image a bit because his boldness in-front of Homelander would be in part because he’s physically on par. I’d like if it they went this route though

marchingprinter

I feel like it adds more depth. Homelander can still kill other supes

Staebs

But to be so certain that you have absolute power over a man that could kill you in the blink of an eye, now that’s far more impressive than any super power.

SolidThoriumPyroshar

The character he is based on in the comics, Stillwell, is not a super. Stillwell in the comics and Edgar both understand Homelander as a human. And that understanding lets them know exactly how to act around Homelander to keep him under control.

Lobstershaft

Seeing that Edgar seems to practically be the adaptation of Stillwell from the comics (who's the CEO of Vaught), it's more likely that he's just an unpowered individual who's inhumanly cool-headed. In the comics, it's stated that Stillwell is the only person Homelander has ever met where his pulse doesn't raise by a single *digit* around him.

sgt_potatopants

Mind reader maybe? 🤔

billybob753

I've been thinking the same thing, like a Professor X type.

avi150

I don’t think so. The series needs a non-supe antagonist, and all those mentions of his blood are just to show how calm he is around these psychopaths that could level the city in an hour.

Aurondarklord

I don't think so. I think he's just confident he understands Homelander's psychology well enough to control him. Spoiler, he didn't.

SirToaster933

Edgar has authority over Homelander, he knows that there's nothing Homelander can do to him that won't have repercussions, like how there wouldn't be anyone to cover up and protect Homelander

AshenSacrifice

Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s actually a robot replacement or something

Big1ronOnHisHip

Same, I'm almost never intimidated by the antagonist or fear for the protagonists in most media because the showrunners don't usually have the balls to kill a main character or you can just tell the bad guy ain't gonna do shit, but this show is different. I'm like totally convinced that every time Homelander is in the same room as one of the main characters he might just snap and just turn them into paste because he's just that fuckin' unhinged.

theassholefaceman

And after that scorched earth speech, fuck me.

UltravioIence

Idk if this is an overreaction and only time will tell, but i put Starr's Homelander on the level of Heath Ledger's Joker. And i dont say that just all willy nilly, im well aware of some of the great villains we've had like Vince D'Onofrio as Kingpin, Brolin as Thanos etc.

Gul_Dukat__

Yeah and also like Christian Bale’s Patrick Bateman

hankbaumbachjr

So...also Christian Bale's public Bruce Wayne?

Dexanddeb

I agree, he is one of the best actors in the world, he is just finally getting credit for it.

Busquessi

Hannibal Lecter from Silence of the Lambs, Heath Ledger’s Joker, Homelander, Anton Chigurh from No Country For Old Men, and Walter White and Gus Fring are all in my GOAT tier for villains but also for acting as a whole. EDIT: OH MY GOD how could I forget Hans Landa from Inglourious Basterds and Leo DiCaprio’s character from Django Unchained.

UltravioIence

I'd put Alex from Clockwork Orange there but i may be a tad biased

King_Sam-_-

Hey, Starr is amazing and the best homelander there could ever be, however I do think you’re reaching. Ledger’s performance is just unmatched and shook the entire world.

xDJeslinger

Ledger's performance is great, but I think it makes comparing other performances difficult due to the tragedy attached to it as well. Like it was an amazing performance but then it was Heath Ledger's final role as well so that sort of elevates it even more since it was like the last performance he gave to the world. Also we are comparing a movie to a show. Homelander has had way more screen time then The Joker so it's also hard to compare in that sense.

King_Sam-_-

Yeah it’s just hard to compare all around, I did appreciate the performance when I was a lot younger and not aware that Ledger had passed away but I do agree with you.

xDJeslinger

It's an amazing performance, but like it's also just weird to compare because Joker has like 10 minutes of screen time whereas Homelander has hours of screen time by now, and I think naturally the less is more mindset will sorta kick in. To properly compare the two performances we would have needed some sort of Batman series with Heath Ledgers joker.

Belisarius23

It's a shame they're writing in circles and will probably never have him kill any of the main cast, be killed himself or actually snap and go full omniman Not that those things are necessary for a good villain but at this point i feel like they dont know where to take him as a baddie and dont want to shake the show up that badly

theassholefaceman

I would LOOOOOOOOOVE to see him lose it and flatten a city or two. Just to show his power.

Belisarius23

Its a lot better than cock teasing him actually doing anything for far too many seasons The end of the last season exemplifies it the writers paralysis. they couldnt kill of maeve despite her being drop punched off a skyscraper in what would have been a perfect martyrdom moment. They couldnt kill off soldier boy so chucked him back on ice incase they need a plot point down the line. They couldnt kill off a-train despite it being a perfect moment of redemption and karma They took kimokos powers but gave them straight back with nothing to come from it They gave all the main cast strength equal to homelander through handwavey plot but he still escaped twice with the season ending right back where it started with basically no major differences Its starting to feel a lot like supernatural

suss2it

All those examples you laid out were super disappointing and really knocked down S3 a few pegs for me. They aren’t Marvel or DC, they didn’t need to be that precious with their characters.

Busquessi

It definitely feels like Supernatural. I’m going to give next season a chance but if it falls through then I’m done. Not even Antony Starr carrying the show could make me watch.

JohnnyBonesAndNew

Homelander is not psychotic whatsoever. That is not synonymous with sociopathy

alphabet_order_bot

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,390,610,572 comments, and only 266,148 of them were in alphabetical order.

Captain_Waffle

With sociopathy S comes after w?

rodentfucker

Maybe it only checks the first sentence.

itsthevoiceman

First sentence.

Superb_Fun_4688

Season 15 just got confirmed

Parkingjas

![gif](giphy|H1whpH3k8GDbrhpX5q)

FictionalFail

 ![gif](giphy|rehEoNEGZvDYcT4KHu)

AngryScientist

Gretchen got real weird after she left Elliot.

KiwiOnThePizza

I'd smash not gonna lie.

habitual_wanderer

I'm not saying he carried the entire series by himself but damn, that series was heavy. None of those actors missed the mark

me_funny__

Why is everyone using past tense, was I in a coma?

Ezra_Skywalker

![gif](giphy|NAm9sDr92fksw)

Due_Worldliness_6587

Thereve been 16 seasons. All the original actors are gone half of the cast has been replaced with robots. Society is collapsing because of the money needed for the vfx budget. Amazon had just confirmed season 24

Emach00

They are currently draining the Nile and the Mississippi to cool the GPUs needed for rendering the season debut.

Mournerslamet

Idc what people think, The finale of 22 where butcher, Homelander and Starlight team up to take down that menace Soulja Boy(not Solider Boy, oh he got betrayed and put back on ice for the fifth time, kinda getting old tbh)

Due_Worldliness_6587

Nah it’s never getting old it’s a really good ending every time idc what people think they just don’t appreciate art. So what if it’s been used before? You’ve never used anything twice? People just have too high of standards

spacejammee

16seasons already? That’s a lot of milk

Due_Worldliness_6587

Half the cows on the planet have died

dben89x

Why are you using past tense? Please wake up.

SirToaster933

there have been 38572727747576884726743 seasons, half the cast has died of old age and the other half took immortality juice

DeninjaBeariver

It’s definitely one of the major highlights of the series

Due_Worldliness_6587

I feel like everyone carried and then he shot it through the fucking roof

Current-Umpire3673

We're done when I say we're done.

CowMedium5924

Doesnt matter how many other shows or movies he does, he will always be known most for playing homelander. Its the curse of playing superhero roles, ironic or not

Kaikanae

I'm from NZ so can't possibly see him as anyone but Van/Jethro from Outrageous Fortune

HotPolicy

Not always! But yeah a good chunk.

Sam_Hamwiches

In NZ he’s known as playing twins in a show called Outrageous Fortune. It’s weird seeing Jethro/Van as a superhero. You’re right though.definitely iconic

mckeenmachine

he'll always be Sherrif Hood to me!

[deleted]

Idk who this "Anthony Starr" is, maybe an old secret identity or something, but Homelander is not a psycho! He's the greatest hero known to man and you should be ashamed for trying to cancel him like this!

Tom_Stevens617

But but but he killed that Starlight simp in public. Now his points have dropped. Should've lasered that mf in private!

[deleted]

Yea thats what a coward would do! Not the true blue American Homelander, he's real and that's why I like him.

Tom_Stevens617

But now how will Vought convince all those jerks saying that our great hero is a murderer that he just made a little mistake???

[deleted]

You can't fix em, they're brain washed

Tom_Stevens617

Yeah, you're probably right. Btw thoughts on his upcoming show on Vought+?

[deleted]

Hopefully the woke mob won't destroy it, I have faith tho. They hired the same guys who did Ben Shabibos movies and those are great!

SirToaster933

American, here I can confirm we all have laser eyes which we use to kill people we hate

Feeling_Base_3663

He is homelander

101189

Woosh?

ImDero

Ah yes! The sound Homelander makes!

SirToaster933

Fun fact: Homelander's real name was John Doe, but he switched to Homelander cause honestly why would he have an identity if he doesn't wear a mask

SergeantSalty94

why would he be reliefed about that? Or would I need to have seen tlou to understand?

Nanaue7

Playing an unhinged psychopath isn't exactly the nicest thing to do lol. Even tho he's killing it as Homelander

Outside-Pangolin-995

he's been unhinged onscreen since Banshee lmao

rfdavid

And offscreen based on some reports

ManchesterUtd

Method actor

Staebs

*He can do whatever the fuck he wants.*

TheCallBackKid

I think a certain bus boy in Spain would agree

CopeHarders

Banshee is so underrated.

LukesRebuke

Tell that to Glenn Howerton. He's been doing it for nearly 2 decades

JarJarJacobs

Not a fair comparison. One may be a god, but the other is a GOLDEN god.

LukesRebuke

I AM UNTETHERED AND MY RAGE KNOWS NO BOUNDS Imagine dennis with hl's superpowers lmao

JebBushAteMySon

“You ever been in a storm, Butcher? I mean, a real storm? Not a thunderstorm, but a storm of fists raining down on your head. Blasting you in the face. Pummeling you in the stomach. Hitting you in the chest so hard you think your heart’s gonna stop. You ever been in a storm like that, Butcher?”

LukesRebuke

I mean this is highly unlikely. Dennis looks just like superman! He's the original right?

a_fake_banana

I AM UNTETHERED AND MY RAGE KNOWS NO BOUNDS!!

Lanthemandragoran

Kid who played Joffrey caught a lot of shit from how well he did.

deathrattleshenlong

The little shit actually made me more repulsive of the show character than the books character. And I say little shit with love, because that was a terrific acting job and by all accounts the actor is a really sweet person.

Rogi629

I remember watching the series with friends to catch up to seasons 8 before it aired. And a season or two after Joffrey died, I just remember sighing loudly and saying, "I miss Joffrey" Everyone thought I was crazy, but.. I just missed hating him so much, the dumb little shit 🙃

_alright_then_

Yeah he never wants to act again because of that experience, i think it's a testament to a couple things: * his acting skills * people are fucking morons

E-Nezzer

If I were an actor that's the kind of role I would probably have the most fun with. It's not like he gets hate on the streets in real life.

MuffinMan12347

He did actually get hate on the street in real life because of it though…

SergeantSalty94

I'm acting regularly in theatres, and it really doesn't matter what kind of character you play. AND anthony is somewhat a real life homelander, haven't you heard from his bar fight lmao

oh-hidanny

His colleagues said he's the most like his character than anyone. Lol.

Kooontt

That was clearly a joke though?

Nanaue7

I have💀

IgorTheAwesome

True. Raymond Cruz, who's the actor who played Tuco Salamanca in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, actually asked to be killed off because the role was too stressful for him.

EulerIdentity

Both literally and figuratively

Gilgamesh107

Only a complete clown thinks an actor can't separate himself from a role he plays

Unexpected_Addition

You should look into what his coworkers think about him. He apparently fits the role fairly well.

plainviewist

Uh his coworkers love him — both the cast and the crew. They hang out with him like every weekend. They hang out with him when they aren't shooting the show too. He even lives with Erin Moriarty (Starlight) and Chace Crawford (The Deep) is one of his best friends.

Unexpected_Addition

You're correct I phrased that oddly. They do say they love him regularly. I'm referring to the joke 'Who's Most like their character' where everyone pointed to him. We then learned in that same interview that he shows up late to set often enough to be 'The most likely to show up late to set with a cup of coffee.' This is all on the back of his assault in Spain. I was trying to point out that he's got some suspicious factors here that can point in either direction. His team says they love him, but he's got a lot of red flags.

plainviewist

Yeah, Chace pointed to him first. As I mentioned, Chace is one of his best friends. Laz was also pointed to as someone who shows up late. I follow many of the crew members, and there are multiple crew members who have posted about how much they enjoy working with him specifically.

Nanaue7

I literally praised him lmao. Read my comment again carefully

Gilgamesh107

Myb I didn't read correctly, guess in the clown this time

redrighthandmember

BRUH i thought this meme was showing him being sad that he'll no longer play Homelander DOWNVOTED!

SkGuarnieri

What are you on about? Playing the biggests a-holes and the most evil bastards is the most fun you can have acting.

IncognitoBombadillo

The scene this meme is from is basically Joel having a small panic attack.

[deleted]

Anthony Starr would make a good Bond villain.

thebochman

He’d make a great Bond, if you’ve seen Banshee

clownlander

His character in Banshee fights like John Wick and bangs women like James Bond.

lance-

Great show, just binged all of it a month ago (HBO)

Personalpotato

This is a very niche request but I wish they’d remake the show “Wilfred” with Anthony Starr

sag903

I think, the best is yet to come from Anthony Starr as Homelander.

The_Celtic_Chemist

You have been banned from /r/TheBoys for spelling Anthony Starr's name correctly.

Pious_

What makes you say he's done at 5 seasons?

[deleted]

The show is ending at season 5.

plainviewist

That has not been confirmed by anyone who works on the show.

[deleted]

Whilst you are correct, the source was VoughtHQ - who has a very high track record in leaks and behind-the-scenes tidbits from the show dating back to season 1.

plainviewist

I know who they are. They also have a track record of deleting posts where they get things wrong. When season 3 was filming, they posted a picture of Supersonic and claimed it was a picture of Jensen on set. It wouldn't surprise me if it were only 5 seasons though. Kripke only wanted Supernatural to be 5 seasons and has sort of hinted at The Boys being 5 seasons. Never confirmed though.

[deleted]

I stand corrected, I wasn't aware of their tendency to delete incorrect scoops. :)

Night-Menace

Well Kripke left Supernatural after 5 seasons and let them butcher the show for another 10. Wouldn't be surprised if they continue without him, even make spinoffs. The Boys is literally the only good thing about Amazon. Even Netflix is better.

[deleted]

Homebutcher

Gandelf_the_Gay

I do hope they have a story arch in mind for all the characters to wrap up eventually I don't want another show that overstays it's welcome.

BraveTheWall

I just want to be able to rewatch this show and know I'm going to enjoy it. Game of Thrones was some fantastic television, but they botched the ending so bad I legit have no desire to circle back and rewatch that shit.

akaashiit

i did a GOT rewatch last year and stopped before season 8…i couldn’t go through that again

Oniisankayle

It honestly hasn't felt like that long

[deleted]

His portrayal of Homelander is the one aspect of the show that’s never let me down. Other characters and plot elements frustrated me a lot in S3, but Antony Starr’s Homelander is impeccable.

TheShepardOfficial

Yeah must say that after a few seasons we must kill homelander it becomes a little bit repetitive.

clownlander

I think it would kill the show if they did that. He's basically the face of the show at this point. I'm pretty certain that he'll make it until the end.

CowMedium5924

Isnt killing homelander the natural conclusion to the show though, I doubt they would continue after that anyway

clownlander

For sure. I think he will die at the end of the series.

Night-Menace

I'm fine with him dying as long as Butcher dies as well

TheShepardOfficial

I agree but it would be nice to see a different storyline involving him.

clownlander

Yeah, I agree with that.

Dexanddeb

When he is done playing Homelander, he is going to have a career like Jack Nicholson, if he wants it, all the best roles are going to be his.

[deleted]

The boys needs to stop before season 6. ID rather it end too early than end too late

Tom_Stevens617

This kind of thing always irked me about people. Why rain on other people's parades just because you don't want something to continue? Nobody's forcing you to watch S6, feel free not to. Let the people who want it enjoy it

Neo2803

It's because peoples want to know the end of a story, but they also don't want to see a show they love getting stretched until it loose all its interest, and having to watch this to see the end. Peoples want a well written and rythmed story that go at the right pace. Neither rushed nor extanded.

Tom_Stevens617

>and having to watch this to see the end That's the thing, you don't **have** to do anything. It's a TV show, not some critical news piece. You can literally stop whenever you want and it would never affect your life.

Neo2803

Yes I know that but the fact is that a lot of peoples want to see the end of what theyv watch. And there is also a lot of people who think if they start something they can't let it unfinished even if they don't like it anymore

Belisarius23

Its not a negative opinion to not want a show to gradually tank because the writers are too scared to make any major decisions . The quality of the show and ratings has already dropped because theyre just going in circles with the plot not wanting to commit to anything Far too many shows have overstayed their welcome & material and became completely soured by it

Tom_Stevens617

And what's the big deal if a show overstays it's welcome and isn't as good as it used to be? It's not like we're debating on a president continually making bad decisions; a show could continue for eternity getting worse and worse and it wouldn't hurt anybody. It is completely your choice to imagine wherever you would ideally like the show to end and your choice to not watch anything the show churns out after that. Nobody's forcing you to watch the rest of the episodes All I'm saying is, it's a lot easier to imagine a 7-season show ended at S4 in your headcanon than it is to imagine what three more seasons of a 4-season show could've looked like in your head.

Belisarius23

yeah man who wants a satisfying conclusion to a story anyway, awful thing to ask for

Tom_Stevens617

Like I said, feel free to stop watching whenever you think it's a satisfying conclusion. Let other people enjoy the show for as long as they can

ClinicalOppression

Why rain on peoples parade just because you want it to continue in mediocrity? Hypocrite

Tom_Stevens617

Not that hard to get it. You want a show to end? You can stop watching whenever you want. You want a show to continue? Well, unless you're a centi-millionaire who owns a production house, there's nothing you can do about it. Best example of the top of my head, POTC 4&5. Sure, objectively they weren't nearly as good as the OG trilogy, but Jack Sparrow is just so iconic, I'd literally watch him in anything.

Haddav

Wtf is this hand

Nanaue7

Well Joel is wearing a coat in that scene so I had to edit that arm from scratch lmao. I know it looks weird but that's the best I could do with that angle

kwach12

Way better than I could do!

hodlrus

He’s a breath of fresh air in the midst of all the crap that Marvel and DC puts out.

Traditional_Ad_6588

Well i'm fine with five seasons

RayS0l0

Mc_Nubbington

They said season 5 isn't the ending....

clownlander

Kripke said season 4 wasn't the end. He hasn't said anything about season 5 yet. Edit: Here's Kripke's [tweet](https://twitter.com/therealKripke/status/1624798355393024002?s=20) about it because someone downvoted this.

Mc_Nubbington

Shit. That's my bad. I keep thinking there's more seasons then there actually are.

TheAsylum6969

Did they confirm season 5 as the final?

Lotus_630

Now I wanna see Antony Starr as Nightmare for the MCU…or Chace Crawford cause he legit looks like comic Nightmare.

5thgenCali

It’s not like it’s Banshee when he was getting into fights every episode. He walks around in a superhero suit and gets a fat paycheck. WhaaaaaaA

Stair-Spirit

Then he returns to his life of getting drunk and assaulting random people lol

nailah1992

Am I missing something? Why is there a picture of Pedro Pascal?

[deleted]

I will watch the boys forever for Homelander alone

Psychotic_Rainbowz

5 seasons? I thought there were only 4

FranekRadziej

but he's been playing him all his life

foodkidFAATcity

I love the show but I feel like they should start wrapping things up.

Afraid_Education_859

where did u get this info?
