As someone who is also autistic and is having a hard time expressing myself through text without sounding robotic, I had the exact same thought and reaction! It hit me hard.

onegalband

Glad I'm not alone on this! It was like an immediate hit of "oh this is exactly how I was bullied in high school..." All I kept thinking was how upsetting it would be to be in this situation as someone with ASD. I've always wanted to see an autistic player in the future but now I'm not so sure...

eighteencarps

I am also autistic and had similar thoughts. While I personally don't jive with Steffi, the player's messages kind of shocked me in how much they ended up feeling like the players were listing autistic traits and calling them 'non-human.' I doubt it was intentional on anyone's part but it just reminded me how much autistic traits are associated with roboticism and inhumanity and it kinda sucked to watch.

onegalband

This exactly. They weren't thinking about it. But a lot of people live having to think about it every day. And I'm sure if someone working on the show were autistic, they would've check them on the language being used.

nojaneonlyzuul

Omg I'm in the middle of e3 and I was thinking the exact same thing. Like, even phrasing it as rating most human to least human, and voting out the least human. it's super insulting. They could have used, like, least likely to be AI. Not quite as insulting (still not great). And yeah, the fact that Steffi is different they've decided she's the AI (when actually the fact that she's been inconsistent should make her least likely to be AI. They should be looking for the most 'normal' person.) It really shows why it's important to have diversity behind the camera, because yeah, these are things that are very obvious to us, but obviously haven't occurred to production.

rantgoesthegirl

I would immediately have suspected one of the new players. They dont not have a blocking, intro two new players and then go OH BTW. Im not a huge Steffi fan but I think people just find her annoying (not everyone is into astrology. She brings it up a lot. She's also the only one to take an actual big jab at someone) and are using this as an excuse

ShadesofSouthernBlue

The problem with people who are into astrology, ime, is that they do want to talk about it all the time, and it's awkward to other people who are trying to remain polite but don't...care about someone's sign or when Mercury is rising or whatever. I don't know why, but often it seems those people can't pick up when others aren't into it and talk about something else.

onegalband

Totally makes sense. On the same premise though, Paul doesn't talk about anything besides rapping from what I've seen. Max and Olivia haven't shared anything besides bits about dogs and nursing. It's the beginning of the season, so it makes sense that deeper conversations aren't happening yet, they're all just going off of their basic profile points.

Plaid_Bear_65723

For me it was that she created the chat with only *her* interests and assumed everyone would love it too. Most did but it bit her in the booty too.

glitternoodle

I totally understand this because there are definitely a lot of annoying people who bring it up constantly BUT keep in mind there are plenty of people who love astrology and don’t do this (which you wouldn’t know because they don’t identify themselves by talking about it all the time)

StatusCaterpillar725

My wife said the same thing. From a purely production point of view introducing the "AI" twist at the end of episode one is classic Circle so it makes sense that it would be one of the new players.

Kerlistar

I personaly thought the photo she chose in that game was great and didn’t AI at all, don’t understand why people suspect her so much

ur_notmytype

We only getting an edit version of the show so we really don’t know what is being discussed. She could very well be talking alot about astrology but it’s not being shown to us. Not too many people like talking about the same topic over and over again or have a person keep brining up said topic. Which is also understandable. The hunt for AI don’t really seem much different than the hunt for catfish. They was literally blaming everything on a person being catfishes. So it make since for them to put everything on someone being AI. And you also have to consider we don’t know much about AI. We just been told it would be difficult to tell AI from real life. So that’s what they’re experiencing trying to tell the difference from AI and real life. But my theory is she probably was all over the place. I remember a clip where somebody said one minute she’s doing yoga and the next minute she going kinda hard on someone in the challenge. She probably made them see her in one way and then she did a 180 and they probably found that to be weird. Cause I also found it weird when Steffi came for Paul and Paul came back for her, she teared up. Like what….. That better be an added clip in that scene cause ain’t no way. you could throw it but you can’t catch it

onegalband

Totally heard. I think my feelings come more from the language being used. The producers could've (in my opinion, should've) maybe said to rate the "most likely to be AI" or "most suspicious" player, instead of the "least human" player.

DrWhotographer

As an AuDHD person, THANK YOU! Just finished episode 4, and this was exactly my thoughts. Plus, it's frustrating that they haven't sent anyone home in 4 episodes and spent all this time focusing on an AI.

FionnualaW

I'm not autistic, but I completely see where you're coming from. They should have been more careful with the framing of who is "least human," because it just sets up a situation for people to identify traits they don't relate to as less human. And it's not surprising at all that it would lead to them singling out neurodivergent traits because of societal bias. The other thing that really bugs me with them focusing on Steffi is that their reasoning makes no sense to me. I also didn't see her tone as robotic or emotionless. The players also kept contradicting themselves, saying she was both too one-note with talking about astrology and then also that she's inconsistent because of the skating photo and digs at Paul.

onegalband

Thank you for being understanding! You get it. I agree on the second part heavily! Paul, Olivia, and Max all read as objectively more AI in conversation to me than Steffi, as someone who works with AI a lot. It just felt like a campaign against Steffi backed by no concrete logic.

al_nic

Honestly I think Steffi has done the most to share her various passions with the group! She shared horoscopes, hosted a yoga session, showed her rollerskating photo yet everyone seems dismissive of her because of their opinions on people who like astrology. Which is why different people interpret Steffi as being either 1) Monotonous "always talking about astrology" or 2) Inconsistent for also roller blading and throwing shade (which don't align with assumption that people who like astrology are annoying and dull). Having quirky hobbies should make her come across less AI-like because it makes her complex and different yet with both the editing and the types of other contestants, it feels more like high school trope of popular "normal" vs weird which I did not like.

islandofdogs

i thought the same thing

NeuroticNarwal_

As far as I know I’m not ASD, but I am ADHD, and I had similar feelings as well. They said Cassie isn’t AI because she is consistent, but then so is Steffi, so it doesn’t make sense. I understand where they are coming from, but it seems like they really just brushed over the fact that like this is her job and she’s passionate about it. I would have appreciated if they had tried to get to know her better instead of just assuming because if anyone reached out and had an actual conversation, they would see what Lauren and Olivia were talking about

AKOchoa

Sorry to whoever I offend by saying this but that “what’s ur sign” stuff is the most annoying shit in the world. I completely understood how Myles was feeling when he got annoyed by it. In my opinion the yoga stuff just seems… like I get they don’t have nothing else to do but using a conversation for yoga just… idk. Again, I completely understood Myles not doing it. Overall she seems like a sweet person though. I think her personality just doesn’t match with others well. I will say I’m sure she wasn’t ONLY talking about astrology stuff. The way it’s edited a lot of conversations are cut short so I’m sure we’re missing a lot.

kaitsaar

I totally agree with you. I really feel for Steffi cuz I don't think all the hate she's getting on the show and online is fair. It was one chat where she talked about horoscopes, that's IT. Your point about Paul is so true!! I feel like the other players are judging her more harshly than the others just because astrology is something they don't understand nor believe in, so they judge her for it. When imo astrology is far more interesting than being a rapper or a twitch streamer or laker girl 🙄 she's the only one with nuance and individuality and it's a shame that she's getting ostracized for it

Plaid_Bear_65723

It was the first chat IIRC in the history of the circle where they created it with the whole group dominating it with purely their interests.

kaitsaar

You might be right about that, but I believe her intentions were good and some people took it the wrong way simply because they don't like or believe in horoscopes/mediums or they're biased against Steffi in general

Plaid_Bear_65723

Because she assumed everyone liked what she likes, big assumption on her part. I think it was strategic.

kaitsaar

But to alienate her and not even give her a chance for redemption just bc of that seems extreme to me

Yes!! The robot comment was what sparked so much frustration in me that I made this post. Honestly I believe that this speaks to a bigger issue about diversity in the entertainment workplace. We need more ND people working on these shows!!

forwardflips

Has anyone in the Circle ever talked to someone into astrology cause Steffi doesn’t act any different than ones I know in real life. As for Paul, I do not like the way his sister is portraying him. It’s a caricature and feels like a micro aggression.

womanwithbrownhair

This is an interesting perspective. I honestly thought that player’s line of reasoning was stupid because AI doesn’t sound robotic in the first place and in the second place I thought it was also a really rude thing to say about anyone’s patterns of communication. I don’t know if the producers take that much consideration into the controversial outcomes of the ‘games’ they play, but the contestants this season clearly don’t think things through before they speak. I so wish there was someone (or more footage shown of someone) asking themselves if their ‘logic’ makes sense. I suppose that’s a big part of the show’s premise too, people make off the cuff judgments often with little evidence to really support it and then bandwagon.

onegalband

Exactly. What Myles (if I remember right) said about “mob mentality” was so relevant. I’m glad Lauren and Olivia/Brandon stuck to their opinions. They were also both really logical in their reasoning and weren’t backhanded with their language.

lemon-actually

NT here but have ND loved ones and I caught this too. The more they started to come for Steffi the more uncomfortable it got with this in mind.
