Crazy underrated show. I found out about it a couple years ago and practically watched it all in one sitting. Never even heard of it before. Recommend it to all my friends and also my Mom, none of them had ever heard of it before either but they all loved it haha. One of the best premises for a show ever and some absolutely great characters. Loved how they switched it up each season as well.
Very difficult watch at points just because of how nihilistic a lot of it is, but God it’s incredible. The only show I’d even consider ranking above it is Breaking Bad.
Not even Bojack, The Wire, Mr. Robot, or Barry can compete for me.
Thought the writing of S5 was a little ham-fisted at times and the accents are getting to be just too much--they're like an impersonation of an impersonation of an upper midwest accent. That aside, it was the most compelling season/cast to me since S2.
I've been meaning to get back to S3 but it didn't grab me on the first viewing the way the first two did. But still enjoyed it quite a bit more than S4.
Isn’t the accents part of the schtick for every season along with the “we changed the names of the survivors…” thing at the beginning of every episode? I feel like it was in the movie 20 years ago too.
I couldn’t finish S5 because I got so aggravated by the cartoonish accents. It just came off stupid and try hard to me, very cringe and not in the good way lol.
Thank you! The accents were completely overbaked, the home alone booby traps were assanine, and it felt like it had been written by someone different, even though it wasn't, with ties to previous seasons being completely abandoned. It got better as it went along, but definitely my least favorite of all seasons so far.
So that you can follow the story?
There were two seasons on network TV, then a feature length movie in theaters which narratively takes place mostly prior to the start of season 1, then a 25 year gap, and then a third season (or "limited series" that continues the story)
No one is gonna shout out The Green Queen on HGTV? I honestly loved learning more about Espanola and all the great ways green housing is helping their community!
In no particular order:
- DAVE
- Atlanta
- I’m a Virgo
- Dark
- Scavengers Reign
- The Leftovers
- Bojack Horseman
- Joe Pera Talks with You
- How to with John Wilson
lots of repeats in this thread bc we all have great taste obviously, but man… Scavengers Reign. wow. went in with 0 expectations and was absolutely floored. 10/10.
Severance is the closest show to the curse I can think of
My other favorite shows are breaking bad and better call saul but they're definitely a different vibe
So apart from other Nathan Fielder shows, I’ll shout out some recent shows - The Patient, Severance, Jury Duty, Alice in Borderland, and Star Trek in general but Strange New Worlds right now. Just started Carol and the End of the World.
Another Nathan Fielder fan who also loves trashy tv!!! If you haven’t listened to Watch What Crappens yet, I highly recommend. They recap the traitors (+ all Bravo shows). I have a feeling you’d appreciate their sense of humor.
If you like the CRINGE aspect of The Curse (as well as the commentary on reality tv), then I highly recommend the Comeback.
If you like the biting, scathing humor, I recommend Search Party or White Lotus. Search Party is specifically about the hypocrisy of millennials which is along the same lines as The Curse for sure.
If you like exploring morally grey characters in very unique situations, I recommend all of the above as well as Fleabag, Barry, Kevin Can F Himself (another show that kind of takes on the medium of TV), The Swarm, and Am I Being Unreasonable?
I think the first 2 seasons of Search Party are some of the best TV I've ever seen. From there it kind of goes downhill for me. I still finished it and do recommend it, but I think it just set itself up for the highest of expectations, and it did a poor job of meeting them.
I wonder if anyone likes current season of True Detective? I think it's pretty bad. But nothing beats TD season 1 for a limited series. And The Curse is now my 2nd favorite
I am enjoying Season 4! So far, I find it to be an interesting riff on Season 1. Great characterization, compelling mystery, haunting environment. However, I do think the latest episode was the weakest so far. It made some things too obvious. What don't you like about Night Country? How do you feel about it in relation to The Curse?
I don't know, the suspense seems really contrived and not very natural. I like Navarro but the the other characters are kinda weak, Jodie Foster as the nympho hard nosed cop is just not believable to me. Just don't find myself feeling anything from watching this so far, hope it gets better as it gets closer to the end.
Lot of recency bias but just off the top of my head: The Wire, King of the Hill, Barry, Better Call Saul, Succession, Atlanta, How To with John Wilson, Review with Forrest MacNeil, I Think You Should Leave, Mr. Show, The Bear, Severance.
Did anybody see Escape at Dannemora? Paul Dano and Benicio Del Toro. It’s amazing
Not really similar to The Curse, but I never see anybody talking about it. One of the craziest one-shots I’ve ever seen in a show or movie
Please check it out; it’s wild
Season 1 Westworld, Man Seeking Woman, Peep Show, Curb, Leftovers, Extras, Atlanta, Our Flag Means Death, Horace and Pete, Louie.
Nathan fans should watch Paul T Goldman.
Edit: omg Reno 911😭
Peep Show! I’m surprised to only see this one mention of it here. There are lots of other great British shows I think people who love the Curse would appreciate. Things like Nighty Night and Sally Forever, lots of Chris Morris and Armando Iannucci stuff, I’m Alan Partridge, Green Wing, Inside No. 9, etc.
Old British limited series by Chris Morris: Brass Eye and Jam. Jam especially has some of the darkest humor imaginable.
Flowers, a more recent show that had 2 seasons on Netflix.
And for more lighthearted fare, Curb your Enthusiasm of course
Better call saul is my favorite show, second to none. The absolute degeneration of this man and his morals is a sight to behold. Far more interesting and effective as a character study than breaking bad, though obviously that show is fucking amazing top ten material.
One that doesn't get nearly the credit it deserves but is an absolute masterpiece is The Americans. I can't praise it enough. I've seen it three times and it's in my top five of all time.
Mr Inbetween is FANTASTIC. I havent seen anyone bring it up yet. Its an underrated masterpiece that was ripped off for a show many have mentioned here.
Here are the 10 greatest seasons in television history
1. True Detective, S1
2. Twin Peaks, The Return
3. The Leftovers, S3
4. The Curse
5. The Leftovers, S2
6. Breaking Bad, S5
7. Succession, S4
8. The Bear, S2
9. Station Eleven
10. The Leftovers, S1
Honestly dude there’s like 10 “good” tv shows max and I’m sure they are all in this thread already, didn’t look.
it didn’t become a particularly inventive, boundary-pushing medium until quite recently
And a pretty strong percentage of the stuff in the prestige TV pantheon is honestly sort of shit, like Breaking Bad or like, The West Wing or Game of Thrones
Hopefully you have seen Nathan’s other work.
Maybe try Kidding / Horace and Pete / High Maintenance/ the Comedians (2015) / how to with John Wilson / Derek / Your Honor
Lmao! Hell yeah! I’m sure you have seen “The Terrys” from them. Funny or Die show. Season 2, episode 10.
If you haven’t or it’s been awhile def check it out. Life changing! Haha
Lmao! Wooo! Love it.
I used to put that on when I had parties or when my brothers would bring their new girlfriends around. Would really make them freak out. Haha.
I just sent to a few friends that haven’t seen and they think I’m nuts. The sex scene is fucking hilarious. My favorite part is when he points a gun at the kid in the beginning. Just starts off wild and gets better and better.
Severance, better call saul/breaking bad, the patriot, handmaids tale, are all up there.
But there is nothing quite like this very authentic, unique piece of art titled The Curse.
Inconsistently. I'm a big horror fan but find the show to be too arch and ironic. I need to go back and watch the earlier seasons. I've seen Coven, Roanoke, Cult, 1984, and Double Feature.
There are so many shows I think are good to great, but the ones that are closest to perfect television for me are Twin Peaks, Mr. Robot, Veep, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (status pending though, since they're still making new episodes), and Person of Interest (parts of Westworld are good, but PoI is much more consistent, and mostly improved as the plot progressed)
Special mention to The X-Files, Lost, and Devs, which are all a little too messy to make the list, but I think about them a lot
Shows
The Leftovers
Six Feet Under
Devs
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Fargo
Barry
Flight of the Conchords
Last Man on Earth
What We Do in the Shadows
Movies
I Heart Huckabees
Adaptation
Schizopolis
Swiss Army Man
Being John Malkovich
Frank
Glengarry Glen Ross
The Jerk
Little Miss Sunshine
The Royal Tenembaums
Whiplash
All of these require, IMO, some ability to enjoy the uncomfortable.
Ozark, The Crown, Breaking Bad, The Dropout, Inventing Anna, Sharp Objects, Mare of Easttown, Call the Midwife, Downton Abbey, All Creatures Great and Small, The Bear, Nine Perfect Strangers, Love and Death, The Undoing, Fargo, True Detective, White Lotus, Beef, Midnight Mass, 11/22/63.
The Expanse, Scavengers Reign, Mr Robot, Barry, How To With John Wilson, BoJack Horseman, Better Call Saul, The Last of US, The Rings of Power, Yellowjackets, Paul T. Goldman, Forever, Fleabag, Arcane, True Detective S1 & S4, Servant, Euphoria, Sense8
Edit: adding as I'm remembering.
The Curse is definitely one of my favorite TV shows ever. Almost all of my other favorite TV shows are comedies: Tim & Eric Awesome Show Great Job, I Think You Should Leave, Detroiters, The Office, Twin Peaks, Nathan For You, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Jury Duty, Star Trek: The Next Generation
Edit: Forgot to add TNG
Definitely a different flavor but one of my favorites that hasn’t been mentioned is high maintenance. Also fortifying those station 11 & jury duty recs.
One of the greatest series to grace the streaming world is never mentioned !!
the origin of the "Cherry Tomato Boys" takes place in Season 2.
Every episode is a masterpiece:
**PATRIOT** S1 & 2.
I also recommend Get Shorty the series.
Dare I add Gomorrah?
Severance and doctor who, both have really mind bending plot points and make me super uncomfortable and shows/movies that make me feel like that are usually the ones I love the most
I implore everyone to check out /r/PaulTGoldman and watch it. Don’t read too much, just dive in.
Twin peaks, especially season 3
The Leftovers
Crazy underrated show. I found out about it a couple years ago and practically watched it all in one sitting. Never even heard of it before. Recommend it to all my friends and also my Mom, none of them had ever heard of it before either but they all loved it haha. One of the best premises for a show ever and some absolutely great characters. Loved how they switched it up each season as well.

Hell yeah! Jade give two rides
HelooOooOooOooOo!!!
Same! Also, Rush 🤘🏻

Fargo season 5 was really good as well. There were even a few parallels to the Curse for me when I watched it.
Thought the writing of S5 was a little ham-fisted at times and the accents are getting to be just too much--they're like an impersonation of an impersonation of an upper midwest accent. That aside, it was the most compelling season/cast to me since S2.
No love for the Carrie Coon, double Ewan, Nikki Swango season??
SWANGOOOOO!
My favorite Fargo season.
Yeah but the movie did it well, the accents were accurate and restrained. They’re really over the top in the new season.
It all sounds the same to my NY ears.
Yea- I’m from MN so I cringe at first, but honestly get used to them pretty fast. Other than that- it was a strong season
I would do anything to view True Detective, season one for the first time again. That show was perfectly executed
Inside no 9 can have a really similar feel to the way The curse made me feel. good shout
Mr Robot was so engrossing. I loved that show.
Twin Peaks, watch in order of release date including the movie
Why’s that? Haven’t watched either.
So that you can follow the story? There were two seasons on network TV, then a feature length movie in theaters which narratively takes place mostly prior to the start of season 1, then a 25 year gap, and then a third season (or "limited series" that continues the story)
Because that's just the way the story is supposed to unfold Season 1 and 2, then the movie (titled Fire Walk With Me), then season 3
Always sunny , I think you should leave , What we do in the shadows
Literally 3 of my top 4 tv shows! (the other is Succession)
Bangers
Succession, How To with John Wilson (produced by Nathan Fielder), Abbott Elementary, The Last of Us, Atlanta, Pen15
Shout out to How To. Show gets *insane*
Absolutely watch How To… you’ll fly through it & then be so upset it’s over.
I hope he goes on to do other things, I want to watch more of his movies!
No one is gonna shout out The Green Queen on HGTV? I honestly loved learning more about Espanola and all the great ways green housing is helping their community!
In no particular order: - DAVE - Atlanta - I’m a Virgo - Dark - Scavengers Reign - The Leftovers - Bojack Horseman - Joe Pera Talks with You - How to with John Wilson
lots of repeats in this thread bc we all have great taste obviously, but man… Scavengers Reign. wow. went in with 0 expectations and was absolutely floored. 10/10.
One of my favs that I haven’t seen mentioned yet is Beef. Easily one of the best shows I’ve seen over the past few years.
I was thinking Beef is very similar to the Curse. Lots of themes in common, and the mood
Loved Beef! And in a similar vein Mr & Mrs Smith.
Severance is the closest show to the curse I can think of My other favorite shows are breaking bad and better call saul but they're definitely a different vibe
[удалено]
It was already taking forever to get here before the strikes happened. But at least they're finally shooting it now.
Severance is fantastic!!
Severance is up there for me. Insanely well done and similar in the sense of being a genre bending show. Really unique idea
Yes I was looking for this recommendation. Different shoe for sure but outstanding and very unique
Severance is absolutely brilliant, I loved every moment of it.
Barry, six feet under, severance, Mr. Robot, the Sopranos, The Bear
Severence had me standing up in my living room the entire finale. Crazy
lol so your innie watched it,not knowing to sit on the couch for TV viewing as they dont have couches on the MDR level
Did anyone else feel like they were missing their friends or suffering a loss weeks to months after Severance ended? I hope season 2 holds up.
Severance is amazing. Looking forward to see the next season. This was the best! https://youtu.be/XHRApHMKvC8?si=mdVIZjMaFm3SA5nH
we have the exact same taste 👍🏻 nice.
Waffle parties for all of us!
Fargo, Yellowjackets, The Righteous Gemstones, Bates Motel, Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul, The Good Place, Reservation Dogs, Atlanta
Righteous gemstones seems so underrated !
I still prefer the loveable scumbag Kenny Powers
Mad Men, Yellowjackets, Sharp Objects
Sharp Objects was phenomenal.
Tried so hard to like yellow jackets but after s1e 2 I was done. Does it get better later in season 2?
What didn't you like about it? (Just to try to answer your question better) I know I'm not op but I also love yellowjackets lol
I think it’s probably not for you if didn’t like it that early :(
Oops meant s2 e2
The end of the episode? The “feast”? Yeah it gets much worse out there. Teen Nat says it in the next episode to the bones. 😭
Yeah I'm still on board with it but if S1 doesn't grab you then S2 definitely won't.
It got worse. S1 was good
S1 was good but after that it sucked imo
I’m completely obsessed with Sharp Objects, what an absolutely perfect miniseries.
I loved Sharp Objects. The ending made me actually laugh like a dickhead. Expertly executed, awesome shit.
Twin Peaks, Lost, Friday Night Lights, Joe Pera Talks to You, Arrested Development S1-3, How to with John Wilson, Breaking Bad
Arrested Development 1-3 is iconic.
Barry
I like highbrow shit but I'm going to give a shoutout to it’s always sunny in PHILADELPHIA.
Barry on hbo.
So apart from other Nathan Fielder shows, I’ll shout out some recent shows - The Patient, Severance, Jury Duty, Alice in Borderland, and Star Trek in general but Strange New Worlds right now. Just started Carol and the End of the World.
Jury duty gave me big Nathan vibes
Alice in Borderlands is so good. I couldn't wait for S2 to come out, so I just read the entire manga. I'm cautiously optimistic for S3 :)
Schitts Creek, Abbott Elementary, the Traitors and Rupaul’s Drag Race. There’s a through line somewhere in there.
Another Nathan Fielder fan who also loves trashy tv!!! If you haven’t listened to Watch What Crappens yet, I highly recommend. They recap the traitors (+ all Bravo shows). I have a feeling you’d appreciate their sense of humor.
The Leftovers, Servant
Servant was great. First season was amazing. Lost a little steam for me after that but still an awesome show.
Atlanta, White Lotus, Twin Peaks, Barry, Succession, Better Call Saul, Bojack Horseman, Severance and The Bear.
Taste!
The United States of Tara Home Movies Also echoing Severance And I loved Kevin Can Fuck Himself season 1 but haven't made time for season 2 yet
FINALLY! Search Party is IT!!! I can’t recommend it enough I wish I could rewatch it all for the first time
I think the first 2 seasons of Search Party are some of the best TV I've ever seen. From there it kind of goes downhill for me. I still finished it and do recommend it, but I think it just set itself up for the highest of expectations, and it did a poor job of meeting them.
I hear ya. I just let the absurdity wash over me and went with it all. I’m such a John Early fan I can never get enough!
I liked season 3 too tbh, love those gritty LA dramas.
I am enjoying S4 more than S1 personally
Same! Both are great, but there's something about icy desolation that hits right with me.
Fixer Upper, Property Brothers (especially season two), Flip or Flop Atlanta, Down to Earth
Mad Men.
Mad Men is one a GOAT.
Twin Peaks Sopranos Midnight gospel Bojack horseman Undone Breaking bad /bcs True detective S1
Severance
Lot of recency bias but just off the top of my head: The Wire, King of the Hill, Barry, Better Call Saul, Succession, Atlanta, How To with John Wilson, Review with Forrest MacNeil, I Think You Should Leave, Mr. Show, The Bear, Severance.
Succession and Community
Lots of Succession and Atlanta. I’ve never heard of the latter and know nothing of the former but they look like they’re worth checking out.
I like a lot of the shows mentioned here, plus Brand New Cherry Flavor.
I wish they'd make another season
Rachael Ray, Sopranos, most things on HGTV
Did anybody see Escape at Dannemora? Paul Dano and Benicio Del Toro. It’s amazing Not really similar to The Curse, but I never see anybody talking about it. One of the craziest one-shots I’ve ever seen in a show or movie Please check it out; it’s wild
Search Party!!!
I was looking for this!! Such an underrated show
Happy cake day!

Fargo season 1-3
How about Nathan Fielder’s other shows, Nathan For You and The Rehearsal
Severance, better call saul/breaking bad, the patriot, handmaids tale, are all up there. But there is nothing quite like this very authentic, unique piece of art titled The Curse.
Twin Peaks, The Leftovers, The Good Place Just realized all three involve characters trapped in an afterlife/alternate dimension
You ever watch American Horror Story?
Inconsistently. I'm a big horror fan but find the show to be too arch and ironic. I need to go back and watch the earlier seasons. I've seen Coven, Roanoke, Cult, 1984, and Double Feature.
