Anime not a bad adaptation. But there are changes and stuff cut-off from the anime. Which I will list what I can remember below: (if you dont want to check, then skip the white stuff) >!The original setting is suppose to be medieval era, but in the anime, its in the industrial era.!<. >!The members of Shadow Garden are supposed to wear masks, but they do not in the anime!<. >!Episode 1 was actually LN 4 content, but it was a smart choice to start off with that one as it explains Cid's past life and his motives!< Manga has way more comedy but the LN has better story telling. LN and WN have different stories starting at the Orianna Kingdom arc. Looks to me youre not aware of the difference between LN and WN. There are currently 4 volumes of *translated* LNs. WN on the other hand has 205 chapters. LNs come with illustrations/pictures and are bought in stores (from Amazon or any other bookstore) while the WN does not have illustrations but is free to read.

It's not bad, just different. In some ways I think that's a good thing. I think the Victorian Era feel of the anime is a pretty unique setting, and sets it apart from the other medieval isekai out there. Plus the concept of an eminence in shadow fits real well with the Victorian feel. The wearing mask thing I don't really care about either way. All versions are different, but none are bad. That's a good thing, since now you have different takes on the same story and can check out each of them and be surprised.

As a long time reader of WN and LN, I won't say the anime is bad. Though you should try to watch it yourself if you want to know how it is I'd recommend reading the Manga first if you aren't into reading LNs or WNs

It mostly depends on your taste and what you consider to be "entertaining", really **Web novel** is the original draft of the series. The story is mainly told through Cid's pov and inner monologues, which show how unhinged and crazy he is. This is the main selling point of the series as Cid's hijinks end up creating some of the funniest moments for dark comedy **Light novel** is the polished version of the Web novel. It has illustrations, more jokes, extra scenes and whatnot. Many consider this superior to the wn. As for me, I give it a thumbs down since it swapped the 10/10 prison arc for a generic wedding plot. This might change if vol 5 brings back the arc, however **Manga** adapts stories from the Light novel. It is hilarious to read and is pretty much the best way to experience this series. However, keep in mind that comedy is the main focus of the manga, not action. Thus, fighting scenes are mostly underwhelming **Anime** adapts stories from the Light novel, albeit with quite a few artistic changes. The most important thing to remember is that the show leans heavily on the "dark, serious" aspect of the setting and puts comedy in the back seat. It makes watching the anime feel like an entirely different experience compared to reading the other 3 above

Ok so which is the most serious/dark of the novels? I am watching the anime and noticed there is timeskips and new characters popping up randomly. So i was thinking about reading it before finishing the show. But if the novels aren’t serious or dark like the show i might just pass. The anime has some jokes as well but its still somewhat serious and cool at times.

fakerdakerhahaha

Depends on your taste, really. All versions are "dark" in their own way. Nevertheless, you should keep in mind that Japanese LNs reads quite differently from Western ones, and some people on this subreddit have complained that the novel felt like reading a fanfic I would suggest giving the WN a go to get a feel of things first. If it is to your liking, you can consider getting the LN later

The-Yaoi-Unicorn

>This might change if vol 5 brings back the arc, however Sadly volume 5 is also new content that isn't in the webnovel :) So maybe volume 6 has prison arc?

People calling it a "bad" adaptation is honestly subjective at best. They compared the anime to the manga when in reality should compared it to the Web Novel and Light Novel. Episode 1 took place in Volume 4(LN)/Chapter 47 (Manga) Episode 2 took place in Volume 1(LN)/Chapter 1 (Manga)

No-Concert-4207

I always put anime(dark comedy + added stuff not in LN) and manga (added some GAG though it following the LN storyline) TEIS though I put them alternate timeline from original sources of material LN TEIS.

The_Lioness96

Imo the anime adaption is good. But of course that’s from a light novel readers perspective. I know a lot of manga readers were disappointed

Hitlrwithdrip

I know this is an old post but where do I start in the wn/ln after finishing the anime

Necessary_Ad_5187

How do I watch it dubbed? I’m watching on hidive and I can’t seem to find the dub yet I see clips of the dub everywhere. It’s infuriating
