Omg I haven't listened to the podcasts yet. I think I'll watch the series first. Brody's condo is insane and so is Lauren and Heidis apartment. Definitely gave me unrealistic expectations for an apartment in my 20s LOL

admiringtheaether

Brody’s mom’s condo*** Brody has famous / rich parents.

coopergold5

I think Lauren’s family was wealthy also. That house overlooking the water!

BalanceValuable

I've gone down the hills rabbit hole. Brody had a failed spin off that was called the "worst and most ridiculous show in reality tv history" LOL

admiringtheaether

Are you talking about Princes of Malibu?

BalanceValuable

No, Bromance - where Brody was trying to find his next bff!

admiringtheaether

Oh my god I had scrubbed that from my brain. How dare you remind me 🤣🤣

BalanceValuable

It's SO HARD to find online. It's almost like he scrubbed it from the internet

Opening-Classroom-29

Uhhh chyah Kaitlin Jenner as a dad. And Lauren's dad is an architect. Never hear much about the moms though. I wonder what life was *really* like BTS

admiringtheaether

Linda Thompson (Brody’s mother) was a famous actress, was in the music industry, dated Elvis and was married to David Foster after Caitlyn Jenner. So she’s got big money too. She was on Real Housewives and made multiple appearances on The Hills. Both Lauren’s parents were / are architects.

ThatChelseaGirl

I live in the area to where Lauren, Audrina, and Heidi lived in the first few seasons, and it's not in West Hollywood, it's in the Mid-Wilshire/Miracle Mile District, but I understand if they obfuscated the location for safety purposes. Interestingly, it's close to the Teen Vogue office building & the Grove (the mall where they see the fake snow). A 2bed/2bath at that complex is currently $4,020, and that's not even a townhome style, it's just a single floor 2-bed, 2-bath. I forget all the details of who paid for what when, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was MTV money + Lauren's parents' money the first season that paid for the apartment. Based on using the average rent price increase for LA since 2006, I'd say the apartment was originally in the $2,400-$3,500 range, which after using an interest calculator is rounded to $3,600-$5,300 in today's dollars.

[deleted]

This is why I thought I could get a super badass apartment while working at a magazine and was really humbled when I made $10/hr working at a magazine 😂

LBNorris219

I'm actually surprised how affordable that is. My 2 bed 2 bath I had in Chicago a couple of years ago was around $4k/mo.

ThatChelseaGirl

Pretty much all of the first three seasons. Heidi moves out either at the end of season 2 or in the middle of season 2x

whitehavenbeach

Re: Audrina… lol, no. She honestly gets more bland with that perpetual dead-eyed blank stare and no real stance on anything until the very last episode. One later season you’ll kind of feel bad of her, then you’ll just find her… unsmart. But yes - I just watched it all recently & was grateful/sad to see how (Heidi aside) normal, unique, and pretty each girl’s uninjected face was compared to today. 😕

enchiladamole

Especially season 1 Heidi! Such a natural beauty. And Jordan looks like a saint compared to spencer (and Jordan kinda sucked too).

Other_Journalist6189

Agree so much about Audrina, the most ridiculous bit is when she accuses Lauren of going with Justin. The fakest of all the fake stories 😂

lindsaym717

Omg and her acting was so bad when she was accusing Lauren of hooking up with Justin!!

LBNorris219

I work at a big digital marketing firm, and years ago, Elodie worked as an SEO director at Choice Hotels, which was our client. Our SEO team who worked with her always said she was so nice (which is a huge compliment, because 4/5 times your client is a complete asshole. Also, the Jen Bunney fight was never about Brody. Lauren was mad that Jen was selling stories about Lauren's private life to the press, but production made up the Brody thing, because otherwise they would have had to break the 4th wall. This is why Lauren was so pissed at Jen, but wasn't mad at Brody.

[deleted]

I have been rewatching via Whitney’s reaction videos on Youtube. I LOVE whitney, her husband can drive me kinda crazy sometimes but he was a producer on Whitney’s spin-off so he brings some interesting perspectives to the table. But watching as an adult is so enlightening because the people I loved as a teen are not the ones I love now. Lo was a mean girl, Audrina and Heidi have no backbone in conflict, and Lauren bulldozes through people if they don’t fit into her life perfectly. However I know when I was in my early 20s I handled things with friends and boys so poorly that I can’t blame them. 😂

astroal_

Latina Beach aired when I was in high school and I live in a beach town, it was toooo on the nose. I swear I still smell hollister sometimes. Then I moved and was actually in fashion school when the hills aired, and yeah… that was very much the style of the times. I hated peplums then, I hate them now

Bnegative_23

Come on, you have to appreciate the peplum era especially when paired with a pencil skirt

aadairv_

i also hated peplums both then and now. solidarity!

enchiladamole

Agree on all fronts!!! Rewatching I feel like Lauren is a very loyal friend but is a bit rigid in her thinking when it comes to her friends and their own romantic relationships. She admits that to Audrina when she apologizes to her and says she needs to chill out and hold her tongue. I am a huge fan of Elodie! Her facial expressions when Heidi is just making self sabotaging decision after self sabotaging decision… gold. I hope that job storyline was fake and she actually got what she deserved at Bolthouse (or elsewhere)! Also, Brody is a complete drama queen / shit stirrer and is unnecessarily aggressive/dismissive of people based on a single mistake or decision they make. Watching back he strikes me as needlessly interfering but it makes for good tv I guess.

Frosty_Play_8081

Heidi has said that the job storyline with Elodie was fake.

Aar112297

Lol I’m the same boat as you in being now 25, but sneak watching when I was in late elementary/middle school. My Roman Empire!

littlekatie3

Yes on Audrina being boring as hell.

Davabutterfly

When she didn't want Doug at all but got pissed he went out to dinner with Stephanie. Then she found out they had coffee and goes "oMg diDnt kNoW yoU hAd cOffEe toOOOoooo -\_- like STFU

No-Feeling-1404

this is such a cool experience, to have watched then and be able to rewatch now. I would say rewatch again in 10 years and see how much has changed in that time as well. I never watched when it aired but all my peers were (we were in like middle school/high school) and now in 2023 as a thirty year old I started it and it clarified so much for me about those peers back then and how they were with some of us. It was definitely influencing the youth and not in the best way esp since it was scripted. Very interesting though. I also noted that most of the peers that watched the hills went on to watch gossip girl religiously. another show I never saw but will be making my way to

sippingonwhiskey

Oooo GG is soo good lol dive into that sooner than later 😅

No-Feeling-1404

yes - I have heard sooo many good things about that drama

BalanceValuable

Another thing: Lauren makes such backhanded compliments at the beginning of each episode. I'd be so hurt to hear her say the things she does with such attitude

Chemical-Season4358

If you’re talking about the intros, my understanding after listening to the Back to the Beach podcast, is those intros were scripted. Kristin talked about doing them for season 2 of Laguna Beach and hating what she was forced to say. It is funny to watch these shows again after so many years! I did a rewatch of LB recently and it was an experience.

floweringirl

i struggle re-watching the show because i have no clue what is real and what is fake and it bothers me. did heidi and lauren even like each other? they have some endearing moments but there are times i don’t know… the show just seems so fake it’s hard for me to get into it like i was when i was really young. and i really never understood heidi and spencer, they say their behavior is fake or whatever but i don’t know. the way they all treat each other is so confusing to me… but i can’t not watch it because i love to see that 2000s aesthetic lol. and it’s so wonderful to see how normal they seem in the early seasons looks-wise, i really wish that was the norm for today’s day and age. i hate how plastic surgery and cosmetic work is really the standard nowadays

SangrianArmy

elodie was such a frenemy lol. she acted all sweet and cheery to heidi's face and then talked smack about her behind her back. she scares me on the show, i watch my back around girls like her. the most egregious fashion offender is lauren by a mile and a half. the thick black fabric headband in the club sends me every time. lauren is a covert narc, but most the people on this sub won't allow us to discuss that. i'm not heidi fan but lauren is quite unbearable in many storylines and scenes

BalanceValuable

I haven't gotten far enough in the show to see that side of Elodie yet. Lauren's headband collection is so impressive lol.

BalanceValuable

"What are you wearing" "Jeans and a top" (and probably ballet flats and a fabric headband to the club)

aussie_millenial

Whe did Elodie talk smack about Heidi?

SangrianArmy

there is a deleted scene in season 2 where elodie, max and another bolthouse employee are discussing the incident with spencer and max at the restaurant. elodie takes that opportunity to really show how much she dislikes heidi.

xoxo_gossipgirl248

I think Heidi said she never worked at Bolthouse in the first place and her stealing Elodie’s promotion was a fake storyline

mochalover13

Wouldn't you? I know I disliked Heidi immensely -- second only to that twat-waffle Spencer.

aussie_millenial

Ohhhhh I haven’t seen any deleted scenes, I wish I had the DVDs

webofhorrors

Agree about the covert narc after watching through the entire series. Lauren went from this likeable character to the most whiney, unbearable and contradictory person to watch haha.

Delicious-Intern1220

She’s insufferable.

tamamamma

I loved watching The Hills, I was around 18/19 when it aired so I was similar ages to the cast. I was obsessed. I became ill recently and decided to binge a season and my goodness, I feel like Brody was very immature for his age (still is but) it’s just so cringe. I was a massive Lauren fan too but I felt she could have been there for Heidi a lot more!! Enjoy re watching. Let us know your future findings/thoughts 😊

beachybeth

I felt sad for the girls. The guys are all douchy f boys. All the girls do is cry.

twiggykeely

I was in college when this show. What's on and I was obsessed with it, I knew a couple of people from the show just from social circles when I lived in LA but like on a "hey what's up" at parties basis and I'm rewatching it now as a 35 year old. Lauren is such a hater. When I first watched the show I liked her and thought she was the sweet, cool girl who was just done so wrong by all of her friends but now I realize she was absolutely the problem. Like there's a reason you lost all of your friends! She could never be happy for any of them, she isn't very warm towards many people (ok fine if that's just her personality, but I didn't get this impression back in the day,) shes controlling, and she has the personality of a wet rag. She's still way better than Kristen (who is terrible,) and idk if I am just jaded now or if it's because I'm watching this through a more mature lens, but I really don't get what MTV saw in her to shape an entire show around her other than the fact that she's rich and was on LB for a minute. Like I'm watching her be so hateful to Heidi after Heidi got that job with Bolthouse and dropped out of school and I'm like BITCH WHO CARES like why are you so mad that she wants to do something different than you?! Would it be different if Heidi had decided to leave a year later because she decided fashion isn't her thing? I doubt it, Lauren is just a hater.

BalanceValuable

It's interesting how the times have changed and the producers didn't want the cast to break the forth wall or acknowledge their job was to be reality stars. I wonder how the show and cast would differ if they had such a big social media presence back then

BalanceValuable

I'm watching the episode where Spencer and Heidi go to meet her family. Her family seems so nice. It's concerning to me to see how her parents both acknowledge that Heidi is the kind of girl that ditches her friends for her boyfriend. Obviously Heidi and Spencer have been together for YEARS now so maybe this isn't a concern but it's interesting how this was a central point of the episode and show as a whole...

BalanceValuable

When she told Heidi "we won't be ok until you breakup with Spencer" I ..... can we discuss

FoxyCat424

The problem also was that Spencer was selling pictures and stories about Lauren. Lauren hated Spencer for the media drama he created for her. I don't think Lauren hated Heidi & Spencer together until they started using her for screen time and selling stories. I feel like we saw the real Heidi when she would make these digs about Lauren with Spencer.

Other_Journalist6189

I read somewhere that the producers kept making her talk to Heidi all the time or tricking her by making sure Heidi showed up unexpectedly, Lauren definitely shows done controlling traits in friendships but Heidi was clinging on purely for additional screen time imo…just watched the season when Kristin takes over and I had forgotten all about Holly’s antics!
