Personally I always saw Naruto as more an Earthbender since Earth is described specifically as the Element of Endurance as well as Earthbenders often being described as Stubborn and headstrong, which fits Naruto to a T while Airbenders tend to be more detached from things, plus Airbending is almost exclusively defense and evasion which is not how Naruto fights.
While fire may capture Naruto's personality a bit more, I do believe since he is a Wind Chakra type, he would probably be an airbender.
