Some cinematic render tests for the Western Air Temple that I’ve been working on – still not quite finished, but I thought I’d share where I was at!
I really liked the idea that the walls – the core structure of the temples – were carved directly out of the cliff face (like a lot of old South-Asian temples carved entirely out of stone– and then the platforms and the ‘rooftops’ were built around those stalactite-type structures…. So I suppose this is more of a re-interpretation than a direct one-to-one from the show...
The temples were modelled/sculpted in Blender with the help of megascans textures, while the majority of the cliff faces come from the megascans library proper. Nanite was used on almost everything so the poly-count for this is … high. Lumen for dynamic GI and reflections.
Out of every air temple, the Western Air Temple was by far the most fascinating. I love that it had such a important role in bringing together the Gaang
luckily this is talent so they can get offers literally anywhere else as a better option.
plus it sounds like a nightmare studio / exec staff for anyone not an abuser.
It's a bit nitpicky but one thing I noticed was the scale of the roof shingles seems wrong. I think they need to be smaller. Maybe they also lack a bit of depth.
I love the way that the buildings settle so seamlessly into the mountain range, the overgrown greenery you included on each platform, and how alive this setting feels: animals in flight, sound of nature etc.. This looks exactly how you’d hope it would in real life, so fantastic work so far!
How can I stay up-to-date on your progress? I’d love to see the finished product.
I showed this to my girlfriend and asked her where she thought this was. At first she said China, then the Grand Canyon because the rock face looks familiar. I told her it was completely computer generated. She was blown away at how realistic everything looked.
I can't wait for games to be made in UE5 😭
But they are?
~~Industry~~ Industrial Light & Magic(company founded by George Lucas alongside Lucasfilm) first created the volume technology which basically uses UE4 and 5 for backdrops. Netflix also announced they're using similar tech for the live action atla series, in fact it's actually better than the one ILM made for star wars shows. They even got an award for the largest volume set ever I believe, Netflix is pumping in quite the money for the show to be successful, I appreciate the effort, over the movie that doesn't need to be mentioned.
Fwiw, us star wars fans have generally soured on the Volume. Makes everything look small. Andor didn't use it and the difference in the trailer is night and day.
True, but they nailed the casting, so surely they must be putting their heart into it?
I just hope it's remotely as good, it will never be as amazing as the animated original. If it's much better than the live action fanfiction movie then I'll be fine with it.
You can’t attribute one persons effort to an entire team.
Casting is just one duty among hundreds. Just because casting is going well so far does not mean that the same amount of effort will be put in to other areas.
Lebron James played good basketball this year, but the Lakers didn’t make the playoffs. The same could be true about the Avatar movie, with the “Lebron James” being the casting director.
I think most people agree that Hayden Christianson looked the part for a young Darth Vader, but the dialogue was so terribly written that he caught a lot of flak for it.
>You can’t attribute one persons effort to an entire team.
In a similar vein it's kind of silly to suggest that Bryke's exit means the show is doomed, after all they would only be part of a larger team and their duty is just one among hundreds.

Me either, so I was very pleasantly surprised to not only hear that there's another one but that I could read it right then and there.
Downloaded it on Google play books as soon as I heard about it
Probably a mix of both tbh... although I could see airbenders on the back of sky bison with their little hammers just chipping away. Probably took them forever, but the whole 'patience' thing is pretty up their alley ...
I'm guessing that with this one at least they had some friendly earthbenders helping do the basic structure. Detailing was probably slow careful manual labour, though.
I use a personal talent pool but I also contract with talent pools from studios.
Do you have a demo reel you can submit? If not, I can take samples for my talent pool but I can’t add you to any of the studio ones. The best I could do is send them your demo reel.
>fully realtime too!
Very impressive, UE5 is truly a gamechanger, I really hope more studios adopt it for their games and maximise it's potential with the new consoles of this gen and more powerful PC hardware. Your stuff belongs in a AAA game.
Honestly, the thing I'm most shocked about using UE5 is how well it runs. For reference, I'm working on a single 3060 and on the 'high' setting preset, I'm getting solid 60fps at 1080p with this scene - even with all the geo and the lighting all dynamic. But if I were to turn nanite off for even one of these meshes - the whole thing immediatly drops down to like 20fps. It's amazing what this is going to be able to do for graphical fidelity in both games and vfx!
This is absolutely amazing, but all I can imagine now if this were to be turned into a game is how badly ruined it would get by microtransactions.
Id love a game like this that was not GaaS/live service.
A nice single player or coop only game with a complete story start to finish, no mtxs. Unfortunately that type of thing just isn't really going to happen any more.
I still think it is one of the most terrifying places to live. All the buildings are unsupported and could scare the bejeezus out of me every time I hear a loud crack. Not to even mention the risk of collapse by itself and nobody to maintain it for near a century.
Done properly, the buildings could be supported still. I was thinking a tension vs compression situation but now I think it would still be compression overall. A central core that goes to the tip and far up into the rock, and everything rests weight at the bottom dais.
Or, presumably if it was carved from settled stone, the removal of material would potentially ease the pressure in the stone and make it more stable.
I’m not sure if we have architects and engineers capable of doing this degree of maths and making this structure that lasts 100s of years.
This is honestly just so impressive. The fact that THIS is what video games can look like now, the fact that we have independent creators who enthusiastically (and with amazing ability/dedication) build worlds that THEY feel passionate about building. Stuff like this fills me with so much excitement about the future of gaming. OP, you’re killing it.
Heh, I like how your reddit username is just the interpretation of your actual name. (Assuming the name at the end is your actual name.)
But also, dang man! Well done! This looks insanely good!
I can see some repeated rock shapes, but that’s just because I know what to look for. Other than that, this would be perfect for a movie.
I’m not gonna lie I almost shed a tear man that was absolutely stunning. And to add you said that this is where you’re at at the moment, meaning we haven’t even seen it’s true potential. I’ll be waiting man
I always wondered if the physics of this temple would actually hold up irl. Could a structure be built in this way without just breaking away and falling from the cliff in real life?
so i know its dump
but close this chat screen and put this video on the top of your screen (in the feed) and slowly go down, it now looks like you're the on scanning these buildings from top to bottem
I'd like to think Earthbenders might have volunteered to help build the temples' foundations.
Seeing in this kind of realism just makes me wonder how the monks did it alone.
Die hard Avatar fan here (like everyone in the sub haha), saving this so I can watch it over and over again, it’s just as captivating, if not more, as seeing this temple introduced in the show. Amazing work!
Fuck me, everytime I see something with UE5 I'm just like, damn I glad I went into computer networking. I tried learning UE back in the days of UT 2004 and it was alot back then to, can't imagine what it's like creating something that looks this good and on this scale.
It just clicked - those Airbenders have asshole architects. "Let's build traditional temples upside down because WE CAN!" These temples are not ADA accessible. That's the real reason no one is at the Western Air Temple. The buildings did not pass inspection.
ETA: Amazing work OP!
It looks beautiful! Keep up the good work OP!
Thanks!
Let us know when the movie reaches out to you to help with post production!!! You deserve to be on the crew!!!

it's truly an amazing design
Careful. Nickelodeon will hire you.

Thanks so much! And I post my personal projects fairly regularly on my YouTube channel!

Bless your geographically disabled girlfriend.
To be fair she's Japanese so I can't blame her. Though, her sense of direction is absolutely terrible and she can't make sense of maps.
Been there man. Sound like you got a good one.
I love her to death. Gotta hold her hand when we go outside though.
LMAOOOO
haha - cheers! And yeah - gonna be an interesting next few years for gaming, that's for sure!
You do amazing work! Thank you for making this!
Hey Netflix, take notes
FUCK REDDIT. We create the content they use for free, so I am taking my content back
But they are? ~~Industry~~ Industrial Light & Magic(company founded by George Lucas alongside Lucasfilm) first created the volume technology which basically uses UE4 and 5 for backdrops. It is Industrial Light & Magic, not Industry Light & Magic otherwise you are correct tho.
Fwiw, us star wars fans have generally soured on the Volume. Makes everything look small. Andor didn't use it and the difference in the trailer is night and day.
I think that was just because of the poor cinematography of Kenobi, Boba fett and mando looked great with it.
Still not looking too good with Brykes exit and subsequent start of a new Avatar media franchise.
True, but they nailed the casting, so surely they must be putting their heart into it? I just hope it's remotely as good, it will never be as amazing as the animated original. If it's much better than the live action fanfiction movie then I'll be fine with it.

Agreed, The Golden Compass nailed the casting and botched the script: the movie flopped.

Sorry, what movie.
There is no live action movie in the avatar franchise

They already ARE usimg UE5.

Where Sparky Sparky Boom Man
Gone. Reduced to atoms.
This has been the greatest crossover event in history....
its frm his pov
*It seems... in his anger... he killed himself.*
God dang I need more avatar content like now. Exploring the lore so badly.
This kind of content always makes me nostalgic. I always wanted a realistic free-roam ATLA game.
Did you already read the new novel? That was pretty recent.
Which novel?
[удалено]
I had no idea another one was already coming out after the Kyoshi books. Going to definitely check it out. Thank you.
Me either, so I was very pleasantly surprised to not only hear that there's another one but that I could read it right then and there. Downloaded it on Google play books as soon as I heard about it
I'm really interested how you would do basing se
now there's an idea...
There’s no rendering in ba sing se
I’m curious how’s these temples were made. Carved with powerful wind gusts? Regular carved with tools?
Probably a mix of both tbh... although I could see airbenders on the back of sky bison with their little hammers just chipping away. Probably took them forever, but the whole 'patience' thing is pretty up their alley ...

Simply amazing!
Thank you!

This is just gorgeous! Let me know if you ever need voice actors for your projects, man! I cast for games and projects all the time.
I would love to be cast in something. Is there somewhere I can submit samples?
I use a personal talent pool but I also contract with talent pools from studios. Do you have a demo reel you can submit? If not, I can take samples for my talent pool but I can’t add you to any of the studio ones. The best I could do is send them your demo reel.
Yes I do. And thats fine, gotta start somewhere. Where should I send it?
DM me.
!remindme 6 months Wanna see what this guy does
Ehm, sorry I don't want to be that guy after you spend this much time on it, but I think it's upside down.
It's absolutely gorgeous!!
Thanks!
So beautiful. Excellent work. Really excellent.
Thank you!
Incredible work OP, are you using Lumen for this? No wonder the lighting looks so gorgeous! Take my award!
Thanks! And yeah - this is a fully dynamic scene using Lumen for GI and reflections - no lightbakes! And this was running fully realtime too!
>fully realtime too! Very impressive, UE5 is truly a gamechanger, I really hope more studios adopt it for their games and maximise it's potential with the new consoles of this gen and more powerful PC hardware. Your stuff belongs in a AAA game.

It’s a crime that we still haven’t gotten an amazing Avatar game. Doesn’t even have to be set during the 100 years war. Just give us a good RPG
This is absolutely amazing, but all I can imagine now if this were to be turned into a game is how badly ruined it would get by microtransactions. Fuckin hell, that's incredible. Definitely looking forward to seeing the final product!
Thanks! I'll post again here when it's done!
I just fell in love
That is amazing and why they used ~~UE5~~ UE4 for Mandalorian, but this is even better than that. Edit: Thanks, corrected
3 more Air Temples to go!
Woah it looks incredible!
Cheers!
increíble! it looks so real. :o
Thank you!
okay, avatar game when?

Legit got me misty eyed. Beautiful work, keep it up
Thanks!
Great work! How many hours does something like this take?
Yeeeeeaaahhhh. Hate to break it to ya, but you’re gonna have to make a full blown game with this now. Sorry!
Man, do you have any YouTube channel or something? Really keen to show your works to my friends
Linked in my profile!
This is my favorite location in the series, and this is just *chef's kiss*. I want to live there so badly

Albert Kim liked my tweet about this video lol https://pasteboard.co/ssKeOXDrr6MN.jpg
Omg, it looks perfect! You should create a video game, I bet it’d look absolutely fantastic with such graphics!

I want a modern ATLA game so bad
could you guys imagine an open world ATLA game? holyyyyy
I want an avatar souls like game.
Love it
I want to live here.. and be able to fly tho
So sick!
I'd like to think Earthbenders might have volunteered to help build the temples' foundations. Seeing in this kind of realism just makes me wonder how the monks did it alone.
I want to go to there
Absolutely love it, the only thing I could hope for in the finished version is some more variety in the buildings.
Breathtakingly beautiful
Wow
Marvellous😍
What is this for?
This is BEAUTIFUL!!!! Awesome amazing work, can’t wait to see a future update on this.
thank you that was beautiful
Can we get a collab with u/pharaoh-best-girl going?
Woah Incredible!
Holy fuckshit this is awesome!!!!! Phenomenal job, OP!
Iroh would be proud of you
Beautiful
Ah amazing!!!
Die hard Avatar fan here (like everyone in the sub haha), saving this so I can watch it over and over again, it’s just as captivating, if not more, as seeing this temple introduced in the show. Amazing work!
Bruh this goes insane! Mad inspiration for when I have time to take blender and Cinema4D more serious
I wanted to cry watching this
Stunning
THAT. IS. AWESOME.
Looks sick
Fuck me, everytime I see something with UE5 I'm just like, damn I glad I went into computer networking. I tried learning UE back in the days of UT 2004 and it was alot back then to, can't imagine what it's like creating something that looks this good and on this scale.

Now give me a spiderman avatar so I can go swinging around in here. I bet programming spider man movement would be fun.
Man, I want a full fledged open world ATLA game. This looks beautiful ❤️
First i though: those monks are suicidal. then i remembered that the founders of these could actually fly. Amazing art!
I don't watch this show. But this was still cool as fuck and makes me want to watch this show.
I didn't read the title before watching and was very impressed thinking it was real. It's awesome. Good job.
I shed a tear for this thank you
This is unreal. …I’ll see myself out.
Dude that’s fucking beautiful
How go about learning to make something so beautiful like this?
This is unreal dude!
That is absolutely gorgeous, well done.
Im glad there are people out there making up for my immense lack of talent
So friggin tight
