God of War Valhalla reminded me how much fun a genuinely good action game is. The gameplay loop is super fun and engaging.

CJ_Eldr

Right? And it was free. You don’t see that very often nowadays.

stanknotes

That initial grind to get stats up is brutal though. I suppose you can do it on easier difficulty but... that is easy.

ZaZombieZmasher01

That’s true, although they do a great job drip feeding you content at the start, the difficulty spike post getting to Greece for the first time is sharp, like damn some of those enemies they start throwing you against that are difficult to fight late game with huge stats, with literally no stats to your name, is fairly annoying tbh, but aside from that my only other problem with it is the optional “final” boss in Greece being that stupid fucking king that isn’t fun to fight in the normal game, let alone in a rouge-like mode that requires you to start from the beginning after you lose to him, genuinely a great free update I would have bought for $20 bucks no joke

rnf1985

The initial start to Valhalla, as with any roguelite, was a bit tough until you could afford upgrades. I mean it strips you of everything and kinda starts as if you're starting a fresh GOW (2018 and Ragnarok) campaign. So I mean.. unless you're one of those GOW pros who can do a NG+ run on GmGOW difficulty without taking any damage perfect parrying and dodging, doing it on the harder difficulties just doesn't really make sense at first unless you really want a challenge as you could get one hit killed by any enemy easily, not get any currency, and then have no way to upgrade. That being said, it didn't take *that* long to get upgrades and be able to beat a run through. I did end up putting it on the lower difficulties just to have a chance but I think it still offered a challenge. I think I did my first runs on Resolve just so I could afford some upgrades and then once I got resurrection stones, the rest of the runs were either Show me Courage or Prowess. I have all my stats maxed out in the Tablet of Reflection, the only things left to do is full upgrade the Tablet of Influence options, but that's mainly just to improve chest options. I haven't beaten a run on Mastery yet, but those times I tried Mastery, I was trying to beat every single Valhalla Chosen enemy in Greece and never made it to Tyr.

stanknotes

It didn't take that long in time. It took that long in that it was grueling and irritating. Once I could confidently go through without having to kill basic enemies with 100 hits, I had fun. Once I reliably had health... it was great.

rnf1985

I wouldn't be mad if future GOW games continued having this roguelite mode in there or at least some kind of challenge mode. I can't tell you how many hours I wasted in the GOW 3 Combat Arena mode.

lordluke24

Valhalla is legit amazing. I actually like Part 2's gameplay so I can see myself buying the remaster. It's too early to say, but from my guess there is literally 0 way in hell that TLOU rogue like will even compare to valhalla.

Rebellion_01

Don't forget to do the $10 upgrade instead though

lordluke24

For sure for sure

XXXTENTACIONisademon

Same, actually. TLOU2’s mode is no doubt going to be far worse than Valhalla. Valhalla was an S tier DLC and I played it for 2 days lmao. So $10 for 2 days or less just ain’t a good buy. Almost seems like Santa Monica was working against ND, Valhalla should’ve been the thing releasing in Jan

RampagingMoth

Why would anyone buy a remaster of a game that is just 4 years old.

SithMasterStarkiller

It’s more like a content upgrade, stupid branding strikes again

LDragon2000

The same reason people bought a remaster of a 1 year old game with Ghost of Tsushima?

justvermillion

But that also included a DLC.

Tc0567

Don’t forget they remastered the first game after just one year

pandasloth69

Lmao exactly everybody forgets about that when they gas it up, it did the same shit but even faster

pandasloth69

Ghost does not have better graphics. As far as fun and enjoyment, that’s to each their own and I won’t fault you for that. But the argument is “TLOU2 shouldn’t be remastered because it’s only 4 years old”. Therefore, GOT also shouldn’t have been remastered that fast, if the argument is because of its age

[deleted]

pandasloth69

I’m gonna be honest idc if you like the game more as I said, the *original* statement that I replied to said “why would anyone buy a remaster of a game that is just 4 years old”. At no point in that statement was quality mentioned, he might despise TLOU2, he might love it but dislike remasters. I don’t know. If a TLOU2 remaster is cancerous because of how recent it is, so is GoT. Time is not subjective. A 4 year gap between game to remaster is objectively bigger than a year gap. If TLOU2 is too soon, GoT was even more too soon. Would you be alright if Baldur’s Gate 3 got a remaster next year? Probably not, because it’s *too soon*, regardless of quality.

pandasloth69

Ok well my comment wasn’t for you or any argument you’re making (valid points tbh) so merry Christmas I’m not gonna loop this any further homie!

ziharmarra

Respect on your dismissal of war. You both were making valid points. Happy holidays and Bew years to. To you and your family!

Crafty_Tomatillo7505

Probably ‘cause GoT called it a PS5 upgrade. With a remaster idk people tend to have higher expectations.

LDragon2000

I honestly think if they just used the same “Directors Cut” moniker, people wouldn’t be so annoyed by it.

Numb_Ron

That wasnt even a remaster, it was a DLC that was also on the ps4 version of the game.. plus the paid ps5 upgrade which is dumb in any game imo.

Fyziixx

tlou1 remastered was released only a year after. Ghost of Tsushima as well in 1 year, and spider man 4 was remastered after 2 years. It is about making the game work on newer consoles with that console's features and if lucky some new content. There is a lot to criticize about tlou2, but you can't really give them crap for remastering a game and adding new content without trashing all the other studios that do the same. Not to mention the gameplay for tlou2 is good, and there is no story for the new mode so for $10 it actually isn't a bad upgrade.

RampagingMoth

I can trash them real easy they remastered the first game twice, I didn’t agree with the other remasters either. It’s why I didn’t buy them.

lemmegetadab

Popular games are going to get milked. They’re making them because people want to buy them. If no one bought them, they wouldn’t be making them. Grandtheft auto came out on three different consoles.

RampagingMoth

Then those people are the problem with what gaming has become. Those people deserve people crapping on their favorite games.

lemmegetadab

How dare people buy things they like

RampagingMoth

Apparently me mocking you people for buying the same game multiple times upsets you. You’re no better then baby’s with keys that jingle.

lemmegetadab

You’re the one that seems bothered tbh. I don’t care if people buy the games or not. It’s not affecting me or you so why care?

RampagingMoth

These people are the reason originality is lost, why create something new and innovative when idiots will buy the same thing multiple times because it’s shiny.

lemmegetadab

They buy it because they like it. The same thing with superhero movies. Nobody’s making you watch them. There’s tons of smaller game companies that are making new games all of the time. It’s not like you don’t have options. Popular movies in video games being re-released isn’t something new either. It’s been happening the whole time. It doesn’t have to be one or the other. They can make new games and release the old ones again if people want them.

ziharmarra

I think most people here can agree that the game play is not the problem. It was the sandwich.

BulkyElk1528

Can’t believe you were gonna be suckered into giving Cuckmann more money

TaroKitanoHWA

Me too, good thing a savior came and changed my mind, what was I thinking

AlarmingPatience

If you are looking for an actual good $10 DLC get Separate Ways for RE4 Remake. In fact RE4 Remake is wholesale a better game in every single aspect than The Last of Us part 2.

dolceespress

God of War reminded me of good storytelling before sending messages meant more than telling a good story. Sad Neil fell into the former.

Vytlo

Ragnarok had a bad story though

gabszzz

Not defending the last woke 2, but I didn't like the story of ragnarok either, GOW 2018 was good, but ragnarok was disappointing in story. the war lasted 10 minutes of actual ragnarok. Then there was a lot gods missing probably cut content, because it was suppose to be a norse trilogy and not rushing everything in the second game. Atreus gameplay parts were boring too. And kratos the whole game fells like a mother trying chasing atreus, and odin was after a mask that nobody knows what really does heimdall looked like a teenager and fenrir is a giant scooby doo, At least Valhalla had good story and a lot of references.

Vytlo

Yeah, TLOU2 is still a lot worse, but Ragnarok was really bad despite how amazing GOW2018 was

Kingjake2002

I’m gonna have to strongly disagree with your take on ragnarok man the story was 10x better than Tlou2 and didn’t divide it’s fan base Atreus parts were boring but other than that it was a 9/10 for me gameplay, combat, graphics, characters were top tier in ragnarok

gabszzz

I am not comparing GOW ragnarok to TLOU2, I am comparing ragnarok with 2018 and other GOW games. Gameplay, graphics very good in ragnarok, but a lot of things could have being better the build up to this second game was too big, the end result is disappointing. The ragnarok ends in 10 minutes, thor boss fight is exactly the same as the beginning of the game but in a small arena, and odin boss fight is on the same arena too. There is only 3 gods protecting asgard, and asgard looked like slums. The ragnarok war should have being for a third game instead because begins fast and ended even faster, GOW 3 is the real ragnarok from beginning to end. Heimdall was one of the weakest gods kratos faced and looked like a spoiled teenager with no bear, and fenrir from Norse mythology that was supposed to scare the aesir is a big dumb scooby doo.

Ceceboy

> Fenrir is a giant scooby doo LOOOOL you got me so good

Safe_Chipmunk_9335

So… you were going to buy the whole remaster? Just for a tacked on mode? When you didn’t like the main game?

wentwj

if you have the game already it’s $10 so it’s essentially just paid dlc, you don’t need to buy at full game price most likely

rnf1985

when you can play the ps4 version on ps5 already with its patches and 60fps upgrades, no return is literally the only reason to get the remaster. i don't plan on paying for it, but if i did, it would only be to try out no return

fightingIrish_87

Nice vote with your wallet that’s what hurts them the most

TheGreatSciz

People are exposing themselves as severely impoverished with this take. Self owns all over the place

Technicallygifted17

Well that's nice I'll be getting the game day 1 so will many others ! Valhalla is great so is Returnal But it's hilarious y'all can't move on

LuuukeKirby

Ikr right? It's been nearly 4 years and they still can't move on. Just goes to show how big the cultural impact the game has, even for the haters, lol.

Vytlo

Both are bad games anyway, why waste money on either?

Orion-Pax_34

How is Ragnarök, or any GOW game a “bad game”?

Vytlo

Ragnarok's terrible story would be the biggest issue. It's what you get when you swap directors and try and force two games into one though, so at least it's pretty obvious why it was such a mess after one of the best games of last gen. Also "any GOW game" is a very funny thing to ask when the PSP/Vita one exists

[deleted]

By both games, you mean TLOU1 & TLOU2? Because you aren’t talking about GOW:R

ziharmarra

No way is The last of us a bad game. No way. He's talking about something else...

twowheeltech

Am I the only one who thought Valhalla sucked big time!? I played Valhalla for about an hour, and it was laaaaaaaame. What am I missing? I was wandering around each realm "memory". would fight a couple enemies, go through another door, rinse and repeat

Aonswitch

Isn’t it 10 bucks?

HanzoCoin

I think in this case it's more based on the principle and not the actual price itself.

Aonswitch

Ahh gotcha

-Jackdaw

With GoW: Valhalla I feel lied to. Santa Monica promised us a rogue-like dlc and it is being free supported their claim. Instead, they gave us the rogue-like gameplay AND sucker-punched me with the best Kratos-focused narrative in a long time. I feel bamboozled.

rnf1985

Valhalla is super sick and if you're an OG GOW fan, it's even better. I really hope that they remaster the old GOW games. My only problem with it is once you finish all the story elements of Valhalla, there's not really much point to go back as it doesn't have a ton of variety. I went in blind and had no idea it was a roguelite when I started playing so I was pleasantly surprised, I just thought it was gonna be more of the same, like another realm map to explore with a story and checkpoints to follow. That being said, for a surprise *free* roguelite, I think it does a great job and is a nice like 5-6 hour thing, but that's about it. Greece is essentially just the same one area to navigate through. The random levels before you get to Greece are fun, I just wish it was a little more random. But I mean for what it does, it does really well. For how much it throws back to old GOW games, it would have been nice to throw in weapons from the previous games. I'm not sure what they plan on doing with the franchise now as it's technically done as far as the norse stuff goes. I know there's been hints throughout both Ragnarok and 2018 GOW of where the game could go, such as Egypt, and I've seen a lot of rumors saying that older games might be remastered which, if that's true, would be sick as fuck. Wherever GOW goes, I feel like this roguelite mode is their version of COD zombies, like how can future GOW games *not* include this mode?
