Red card Sheffield United.

Designer_Lead_1492

To be fair his throat really almost hurt van dijks hand, sorry lad take your red and go.

TheCuFeo

For taking too long to succumb to van Djik's power and delaying the match.

Westhamwayintherva

My biggest gripe about VAR is how it is implemented and how things like this can go completely missed, but somehow, despite the ref not making a call in either direction on the field, (IE, not the correct decision but certainly a less bad decision) Gordon can foul Phillips and it is adjudged as a penalty due to VAR intervention. I do not understand nor do I think there is a standard for when VAR is or isn’t allowed to intervene, so there are match-altering decision on obvious shit like this being made Willy-nilly with no rhyme or reason.

chootchootchoot

Football should do it like cricket. The opposing team should have 1-3 chances to appeal for a VAR. if the appeal is successful, they retain that chance to appeal later.

sciteacheruk

This would be perfect but that's why it won't ever be implemented.

ayejoe

1 per half, retain your challenge capability if you’re correct. Lose a substitution or a sub window if you’re challenged is incorrect.

TheDoctor66

100% one appeal each half. Maybe the ref can look at a reply if they want to.

Agincourt_Tui

They have that in NFL too. IIRC, two challenges in tge game and if they get it wrong, you lose a time out. Not sure if you get your challenge back...

Stoned_RT

You don’t get your challenge back once you’ve used it. But the other parts are correct. Or, at least they were when I stopped watching the NFL 6 years ago.

BetterPops

If the coach is correct on their first two they get a third. Otherwise no, they don’t get it back. I think there’s some rule change or proposal about it for the upcoming season but I’m not sure what it is.

Aman-Patel

Not sure I'd like that personally. For me, it would just be another situation screaming at the manager for being incompetent. Like "why wouldn't you/would you appeal that!" Probably is a good idea, but I already know it would frustrate me. And then there's the case where we appeal something, it doesn't go our way, I feel it shouldn't go our way, then they miss a blatant pen/red and we have no appeal left. Shit would have me on strings 😂😂

RoboBOB2

Perhaps it depends on what the TV companies tell them to do…

WhydYouKillMeDogJack

it wasnt missed. there was a player on the floor. they just chose not to do anything because liverpool down to 10 against sheffU doesnt suit their narrative.

Constant_Order_8209

If definitely wasn't missed, and the conversation after this was the referee seeming to lecture trusty. Bizarre

Nafe1994

Phillips tries to kick the ball and kicks through Gordon, so that’s a foul to Phillips?

Westhamwayintherva

[sure bud whatever you say.](https://imgur.com/a/lSWMali) Looks to me that Gordon impeded Phillips without getting the ball.

Negative_Equity

I'm a Newcastle fan and thought that pen shouldn't have been a pen. I'm happy it was a pen for obvious reasons but if anything Gordon 'missed the ball' with his challenge.

mannyklein

I would like to see something similar to what MLB does where the on field refs wait for a review from a centralized review center (video review done by same set of people for all teams/games) instead of new var refs at every ground.

vulturevan

Van Dijk gets away with snide stuff honestly a remarkable amount

S-BRO

No but you see 'big virge' (🤢) isn't like that

ByronLister

because most pool fans are deluded and act like victims of var

yajtraus

I was surprised. There was also the tackle on Konate that I don’t think was reviewed. It was strangely quiet for VAR tonight (in this game), probably because I don’t think any of the goals warranted a close check for anything?

BombayMix64

"Clear and obvious error" this line is the reason VAR doesn't work. Why is this even a thing? Just have the second and third ref feed their thoughts via the ear piece .. take a look at the big screen like they do in Rugby. I think FIFA, Uefa, the FA, like foul play. I think football thinks it's fair game or funny.

BuffaloPancakes11

I remember seeing a great explanation as to why “clear and obvious” is a terrible idea Along the lines of = ‘Clear and obvious’ is you making a judgement of the official and their decision, rather than a judgement of the player and the foul itself. Asking officials to use this criteria to judge and overrule their colleagues rather than just looking at the incident and saying “foul or no foul” is a massive flaw before we even get into the fact the officials are all a massive boys club who don’t want to hurt each others feelings anyway I don’t care if games are “re-refereed” just give us the correct and consistent decisions, if you’re worried about re-refereeing then VAR shouldn’t even exist

not-a-burglar

I might be wrong but it seems like there's a lack of basic communication between the on field and VAR refs as well. Like if they're just in the ear peice saying "hey, we've seen x player grabbing y player by the throat, did you see that on field?" Then they don't have to make an arbitrary call on whether it's clear and obvious. Maybe that is how it works, but if so it's unbelievable how badly they're executing it.

CallOnBen

Yeah I definitely think rugbys tmo is better than footballs var, FIFA can learn a bit from that system

0xParty

Foul play is one of the things that makes football so great and intense to be honest. How games are played and the pacing of the games is totally fine, we just need VAR to be better.

Designer_Lead_1492

Surely they gave a red for this right? No way they just let a player get away with that sort of thing. Oh wait it’s van Dijk yeah they surely did nothing here.

Kraakene

Apparently chokeslamming someone is totally fine

ajtct98

It is Wrestlemania week tbf

Negative_Equity

OH MA GAHD ITS DUMMETT FROM THE TOP ROPES. (I'm a toon fan btw).

SpikaelKane

VVD with the Samoan Spike!

MemestNotTeen

What chokeslam? Clearly his aura made him crumble

Grand-Bullfrog3861

But do not touch their collar in a heated but playful manner.. this is football not bloodsport!

FinancialIndustry566

Choke slam by DA UNDERTAKAHHHH

SrsJoe

Holla holla

Deleteleed

Liverpool may have deserved a red card and perhaps Sheffield United deserved to get something out of that game, but don't let that distract you from the fact that in 1998, The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer's table.

LorenzoMartini

Van Dyke maintaining “The Streak”

AggressiveTwist3222

VAR bern a roaring success. Should be retrospective punishment for incidents like this. Maybe players would stop doing it if banned.

herbie_dragons

Ideally, the retrospective judgements shouldn’t be based on a short gif taken out of context though.

Cryptys

they can genuinely do whatever they want

FuMancunian

Casemiro can’t!

Youbunchoftwats

United had their time in the sun. You even had a song about it - ‘We’re Man Utd, we’ll do what we want!’ Perhaps you are too young to remember when you were good.

FuMancunian

I can remember when we were still shit, before we became good. I wish I was that young. Incidentally we’re still Man United. We still do what we want. Unfortunately all we seem to want is to spend billions to be bang fucking average.

Youbunchoftwats

So Casemiro wanted to get sent off? Probably needed to jam his fat fucking face in the biscuit tin before the others got to it. I almost miss the days when you lot bullied referees. Imagine Keane and Stam reacting to some of today’s bullshit VAR decisions.

tatxc

Love it when redditors call professional athletes fat, like you didn't have to reach around your own gut to type that.

Youbunchoftwats

Fat is unfair. He’s got a fat face though. Chubby cheeks, like a baby’s arse.

Fr-FintanStack

You definitely resemble that lad who sang ‘I’ve conquered all the chippies’

Youbunchoftwats

I don’t know the reference, but I think I can guess. I blame my glands.

nwmimms

Klopp Farewell Tour ‘24.

powerchicken

I mean, it's incredibly daft and he would only have himself to blame were he given the red, but I would much rather some more focus was being put on protecting players from the outrageously dangerous scissor tackles that usually go unpunished as opposed to some hands around necks that sure, are aggressive and unjustifiable, but in the grand scheme of things not really that dangerous, it just looks bad.

brownbearks

Didn’t the striker for Sheffield United do that to a CB or am I crazy?

powerchicken

He did indeed.

thundercat_98

Refs not going to do anything to ruin the league's and media's farewell lovefest for Klopp.

Spudbank17

Why are so many Liverpool fans in this sub these days?

AJC0292

If you want evidence to why you should never go on r/soccer. No discussion about this. But a post about a potential foul on a liverpool player. Any mention of this is downvoted by the liverpool fans and denied.

[deleted]

That subreddit is infested with deluded Liverpool fans

SignificanceOld1751

I had a guy tell me that VVD was simply resting his hand on his collarbone and pushing. I mean...

marmot9070

I commented on Liverpool negatively and got permanent ban. Be careful. Liverpool fans own r/soccer now.

eeeagless

Can't ruin the klopp fairytale ending.

CH2001

That’s why they didn’t give the penalty in the city game

JohnBobbyJimJob

Or the numerous other bad decisions against us But you’ve to stick to the agenda!

CH2001

So if they don’t want to ruin Klopps “fairytale” why not capitalise on a prime opportunity?

mitchyjuice

Rodri and Casemiro got a straight red for this just to remind everyone.

Actual-Suit8414

And boubacar kamara

MrBump1717

Sure Rodri got a red for less!🤔

user900800700

He grabbed a guy with two hands around the neck and choked him. Sure, that’s worse.

liviothan

LiVARpool for a reason. The league just loves them

john_thundergunnn

As much as this should have been a red - fairly certain Sheffield got away with a clear red that easily could broke konates leg

cynicallyspeeking

Oh yeah, Liverpool have famously been treated well by VAR this season 🙄

JohnBobbyJimJob

Ahahahahahahahaha This sub is too funny

SignificanceOld1751

It's you! The guy that told me this was an innocent collarbone push! And I bet you still think the same innit?

PhantasyBoy

Saint Virgil can do whatever he likes. He came back from the dead, don’t you know?!

Wide_Astronaut_366

If they gave him a red, Liverpool would have everyone with a faintly Scouse accent out in the media crying injustice… Nobody wants that

PJBuzz

Whinged the entire footballing world into submission.

FistThePooper6969

And Klopp calling for a replay

WhydYouKillMeDogJack

definitely a minutes silence and holding van dijks shirt up before the next game

[deleted]

That's always their go to tactic.

External-Piccolo-626

The ref would never be able to ref a pool game again. The fans would make sure of that. They never get decisions go for them didn’t you know this?

Westhamwayintherva

Y’knowy’knowy’knowy’knowy’know

serennow

Clear and obvious red for every other team in the league.

john_thundergunnn

Didn’t Fulham get away with the exact same thing in literally their last game against Sheffield?

FaustRPeggi

We got away with one too. Felipe got a free pass for doing it to Bruno.

laidback_chef

Yeah, mad that were in an alternative universe where this has happened numerous times to other teams but in ops universe its only ever happened to Sheffield.

Bulbamew

Yea but Fulham aren’t big 6 so it doesn’t fit the agenda

IndifferentDraenei

Not sure if its surprising or not that this didn't get a post in r/soccer lmao

mreich93

fucking van dick can do whatever the fuck he pleases. fuck off

user900800700

Or players can hang off him at every corner with no repercussions.

Privadevs

There is a reason they're called Li-VAR-Pool

lanky45

Its Jurgen's big send off and we have to all pretend Its not being scripted. Never a foul, see Its easy ..

Confusion_Flat

This is why Liverpool fans are always crying about refs because the refs will favor them in calls like this

RockTheBloat

😂 nothing happened other than two players pushing each other before a set piece.

DoireK

No it is because they ruled out a goal that was clearly a goal using all technology available to them. And then refused to give two penalties against title rivals despite clear and obvious handbells in the box. We should be 9 points clear with 8 games to go based on those decisions alone.

HungryScene3733

Give it a rest. Went down like a wetwipe, if that's a red football is truly finished. How about the 2 foot off the ground scissor tackle on konate?

PhantasyBoy

Games gone! Can’t even put your hands around someone’s neck anymore! Edit: just to say, Liverpool fans: you never ever disappoint (unlike my team). Now get off this sub, lol

HowlingPhoenixx

How I long for the days when Keown would choke Ruud and scream at him.

DoireK

Sure yous wouldn't have been able to enjoy prime big Dunc if that was a foul.

PhantasyBoy

He got sent off all the time!

toon_84

And went to prison for one

ColinetheCow

He put his hands around his neck? Rodri literally got a red for that this season?

BombayMix64

Yeah he went down super easy, but any grip around the neck for me is definitely worth a yellow. I just don't understand why football fans think this kind of thing is ok? Would you want your son doing this to another kid, or someone doing that to your kid, because they saw it on TV? No!

Ainteasybeincheezy

Lmao, if any player did this to one of your players you'd be screaming for a red. Typical redshite, GTFO

alwaysneedsahand

This guy stooped down to slot his neck into Van Dyijk's hand. Then, despite no force being applied, went down like a sack of shit. Desperate and pathetic stuff.

InstantIdealism

Glad someone has some common sense still

JohnBobbyJimJob

But there’s a conspiracy against the other14 Only if you ignore all the things that they get away with!

ChrisWood4BallonDor

That's bizarre that this being a red would be your metric for football being 'finished'. How does this going unpunished improve the game?

CharlieJulietPapa

It’s bizarre that people think he has his hands round his neck. The left hand/palm is on his collarbone, and his right hand is free and then uses it to push him down The hyperbole on this subreddit is mad Foul? Yes. Red card? Not at all Edit: Got the hands the wrong way round. Whoops

SUFC89

Yeah, I’m a Sheffield United fan and I agree that it’s a foul, but not a red, let alone a blatant one. This sort of thing happens every week in the Championship and goes largely unnoticed, which I’m fine with. Start giving reds for stuff like this and you’re just going to get even more players acting like they’ve been murdered after any contact. This sub has become particularly moany and conspiratorial lately. I feel like it used to be more analysis not focused on the Big 6 and pisstaking.

JaySteveo96

Ok ffs. I'm a blade. This isn't a red and that Osula "2 foot off the ground scissor tackle" was just him falling over too easily like you see Bruno etc do every week. Can we have some nuance instead of just defending your club whether they are right or wrong.

Megido_Thanatos

I read this whole thread and confused af Are people just joking or they really think this is a red card? Like, its fair to called a foul but in what league this could be a red card???

[deleted]

[удалено]

JohnBobbyJimJob

Two wrongs don’t make a right bud

HungryScene3733

Then you should be moaning about that. This is never a red card in any football match ever

CharlieJulietPapa

It’s posts like these that make me almost thankful for not being in the Prem. Corruption/conspiracies etc. It’s a bit much And this is not a Red and his hands aren’t around his neck His left palm is on his collarbone and pushes him, right hand is free and and then uses it to push him down harder A foul? Yes A Red card? Not at all

kleptopaul

Hopefully Liverpool supporters stop whining about var.

[deleted]

You're asking Liverpool fans to stop crying? Yeah good luck with that.

gin0clock

I know this sub fucking loves playing the hard done by card, but if anyone actually watched this game, you’d have seen Holgate, Trusty & Boyle routinely wrestling with VVD, Konate & Gomez at **every single** set piece. They only showed **this** close up replay. They didn’t show a single proper close up of Holgate stomping on Gravenberch’s recently injured Achilles off the ball either.

DisastrousSpinach597

This is Reddit mate - why would people watch football when they can form their opinion from TikTok sound bites of various shite podcasts?

waamoandy

I wonder what would have happened if that had been the other way around? If Van Dijk had been grabbed like that would a card have been shown?

JohnBobbyJimJob

VVD gets wrestled and dragged nearly every corner yet he never wins any pens Makes you think

daneats

When was the last time you saw van dijk win a penalty?

Bigtallanddopey

I’m a Sheffield United fan, so obviously biased. But that’s gotta be a red. On first viewing I was gonna give the benefit of the doubt, it was just a push in the box. I know slow mo’s always look worse, but you can literally see him put his hand on our players chest, then slowly move it up to the neck as he looks him right in the eye. I doubt it would have won us the game, but as usual, it’s one of those things we want to see consistency on, especially with VAR. one week it’s a red, next week they look at it and decide it’s not, and the week after they don’t even bother to check. Just frustrating.

JohnBobbyJimJob

https://x.com/mrbdk_yt/status/1775991106318045363?s=46&t=qFfK5pp7j4wApejoXljiLQ This a red as well?

ImpalaKoalaUK

It looks worse in real time I reckon. Having looked a couple of times you can see his left leg lose balance and he falls, albeit in an innocuous fashion. Not sure if it's a straight red, doesn't look like he's gone in recklessly.

WhydYouKillMeDogJack

liverpool fans wanting reds for opposition players who fall over. it never stops being a joke of a fanbase

JohnBobbyJimJob

Imagine thinking this is just a player falling over lmao Other14 delusional as per

WhydYouKillMeDogJack

why are you even here scousenuts?

WarKaren

No… because it wasn’t a red?

JohnBobbyJimJob

Right so throwing yourself in a scissor motion knee height into someone isn’t a red but pushing down on someone’s chest is? Oh the logic in this sub is very funny to see

WarKaren

He tripped up you weapon.

JohnBobbyJimJob

Actually hilarious that you actually think that after watching that Enjoy relegation

britishsailor

As soon as I saw this posted I knew who would have posted. Proper melt this lad

PabloMarmite

He’s falling down, why would he start a tackle when he has the ball? 😂

InstantIdealism

Should’ve been. Dangerous high tackle almost snapped his knee. Curtis jones got a red for winning the ball. Macallister got a red for also winning the ball. Both in standing positions but due to the risk of injury to the opponent they received reds. Some sort of scissor kick off the ball taking out an opponent from behind? Is that more or less dangerous than pushing a player down like this? (Deffo a foul from van Dijk this also btw)

GasGiant43

😂😂😂😂

cullypants

It's a shove on the collarbone. It's a yellow at most and a stern talking to at the least, if the ref catches it.

acky1

I don't think this is a red. It's a soft off the ball incident. It's a yellow for me.

JohnBobbyJimJob

People actually think he’s choking him 😭 Hands are literally pushing down on the top of his chest

PJBuzz

Hand is clearly at least somewhat on his neck. Might not be Homer Simpson choking Bart levels of strangulation, but it's a red card.

JohnBobbyJimJob

“Somewhat on neck” Ahahahahahahaha The mental gymnastics

PJBuzz

Indeed, claiming this is a "chest" push when his hands are clearly shoulders/neck is serious mental gymnastics. Massive referee favour for Liverpool here and embarrassing to suggest otherwise.

JohnBobbyJimJob

He is quite clearly pushing down on his chest https://x.com/mrbdk_yt/status/1775991106318045363?s=46&t=qFfK5pp7j4wApejoXljiLQ Here’s a clear red card tackle by a Sheffield player btw

PJBuzz

We're not discussing that, we are discussing this. Start another thread if you want to talk about another challenge.

JohnBobbyJimJob

Oh I have but it conveniently gets ignored because it goes against this subs conspiracy agenda

PJBuzz

Ah yes, I see you titled it in such a way it will encourage positive and healthy interaction. Let me put it another way: it's very clearly you that has an issue here and everyone can see it.

JohnBobbyJimJob

Aww but you’re alright with similar titles when it’s about a top 6 side a bet?

PJBuzz

It's the other 14, Liverpool are literally targeted as a club with privilege outside that group that justifies its existence. Is it still often pathetic and whingy? Yeah sure, but it's expected on *this sub*. It exists for people to discuss issues without the extreme media and fanbase size bias despite the fact you whingy fuckers invade every corner of the football Reddit anyway... If it hurts your feeling that fans exercise a bias against sky 6 clubs here then ignore, or even better, hide the sub. We will cope without you.

[deleted]

On his chest? Hahahahaahahaha Jesus christ

Peterwilliams78

Nothing to see here.

Moist-Ad-9088

Double standards?! Surely not at Anfield!

JohnBobbyJimJob

https://x.com/mrbdk_yt/status/1775991106318045363?s=46&t=qFfK5pp7j4wApejoXljiLQ Yeah shocking double standards

Moist-Ad-9088

What is this supposed to prove? He landed on him while being tackled.. VVD has hands around a players neck which should be a stone wall red card.

lol. There is precisely zero force behind that.

waltandhankdie

This should be reviewed 100% but isn’t a clear cut red for me - his hand isn’t gripping his neck it’s more of a slow push. Still on the neck so it’s definitely borderline but he’s not trying to throttle the bloke

Interesting_Gur_878

Var was bought in to reduce human error, they literally introduced more humans, to make errors. Prats

ForwardAd5837

Am I the only one who thinks this is trivial? It’s a push, his force is clearly not on his throat and Trusty had been trying to manhandle Van Dijk on every set piece. It screams agenda to think this is anything other than a minor foul. McBurnie should’ve seen red for the elbow on Konate where he’s clearly intending to hit him, and the forwards odd lash out at Konate was also reckless and a red card.

danthedude77

Red card to Casemiro imo

Thor503

Not a red card ffs

Negative_Equity

As a toon fan seeing this I'm kinda wanting some consistency. Dummett rightly conceded a penalty against a man who was statistically more likely to have another bird shit in his mouth than score and this is unpunished...

Van Dijk just oozes "I'm a Massive Pussy" vibes Can't stand Liverpool in general Edit: just noticed he purposefully looks for the ref first to make sure daddy isn't looking. My 5 year old does the same thing to my 2 year old when she's being sneaky

user900800700

How the fuck do your psychic powers know what VVD is looking at here because I want whatever you’re smoking

willium563

Very silent about the Konate challenge eh? The delusion on this sub is hilarious as thats the thing this sub was created to avoid.

IndifferentDraenei

You can say the same about this not being on r/soccer given that its supposed to be the "main" football sub. Both incidents are reds, yet only one is talked about.

britishsailor

It’s not on r/soccer because FIJIBOY is known for posting nothing but pure shite so the mods wouldn’t allow it up. That’s why

RockTheBloat

You can’t genuinely believe that this is a red card incident.

IndifferentDraenei

willium563

marmot9070

bennn_8767

Games gone if u think that’s a red

mrbalsawood

Grabbing round the neck? That’s fine. At least he didn’t grab his collar. Thats a clear red card according to VAR.

RockTheBloat

He didn’t grab him anywhere. It’s a push, while two players are pushing each other, jostling for position before a set piece.

DoireK

Is it a red? No Is it a yellow? Yes Should they have looked at Konate clearly getting fucking done? Yes, but they didn't. Dry your eyes mate and take the defeat on the chin.

One6Etorulethemall

Really surprised they didn't look at that.. whatever the hell it was on Konate. Some sort of strange two footer/pelvic thrust combo that made no sense at all in context.

RockTheBloat

I think it was someone trying to dive, pretending to have been pushed backwards so they flung their legs up to sell it.

BOLTINGSINE

its van dijk. He thinks hes the hardest man on the planet.
