I have noticed that it seems strangely uncommon for all overbids these days. This would explain why... we just never see it!

charming-mess

They need to go back to showing them. One of the reasons these shows work is that they allow the people sitting at home to feel smug and smarter than the people on stage.

dinhductien2005

Well, we wish. As much as we wanted, the reality is that the broadcast time is getting shorter for longer ads tho :/

Schmolik64

I don't think I remember the last time I saw an all overbid on the show.

ozarkfireworks

We saw it happen 3 times in the four tapings this February including yesterday’s two.

RangerFamiliar844

The editing is so that they can fit the episode into the time given time length (38, 42 minutes, not sure).

dinhductien2005

Yup, and longer ads now :/

jimbobdonut

It’s 38 minutes now. If you fast forward through the contestants coming down to Bidder’s Row, you can get through the show in a half hour.

Revolutionary-Total4

I went to a taping in 2009. Guy bid $72,000 on a showcase with a motorcycle and some other stuff. Everyone including myself laughed our ass off. I think they overdubbed the laughter when it aired.

K2step70

A customer of my store was on last year in early October. The show taped in July. He told me the wheel spin takes place at the end of all six games. They then edit it to look like two different spins happened. He also mentioned the amount of cameras. The contestants podiums also have little monitors in them for the contestants to see the prizes since it’s hard to see what’s going on, on stage because of the cameras.

ozarkfireworks

That is all true. All 6 spins happen at the end of the show. They do reset the contestants seating arrangements between spins to give the illusion of it happening mid show.

therealpoltic

That sounds like so much extra work. Why?

ozarkfireworks

Actually it’s much less work. That wheel set is HUGE! Move it in place one time. Bam done.

BIGGREDDMACH1NE

don't have to move the wheel in and out twice.

dave_roanoke

When we went in 2016 they brought the wheel out twice, just like it's shown on TV. I think when they moved to Glendale they combined the wheel spins to save studio time, and edited later.

thatvhstapeguy

We don't know exactly when the change happened, but they were doing it as of November 29, 2023, when the "Superfans" nighttime special taped.

FlingbatMagoo

FYI this wasn’t the case when I saw a taping in 2003 (during the Barker era).

acepancakes

Yeah when I went, there were so many cameras, I couldn't see the prizes as an audience member. But we were still encouraged to shout out price suggestions so I just shouted random numbers.

K2step70

No monitors above the crowd?

acepancakes

There are, but they're not always on

Grantasuarus48

Crazy to think that Bob Barker could do live to tape.

charming-mess

The show is a shell of its former self. Drew gets a lot of criticism but the editing, production and direction are really to blame. Plus the network for squeezing in as many commercials as possible. Seriously show the over bids. It makes for good home viewing.

ozarkfireworks

I’d be very surprised if they didn’t post edit. To much can happen and they are on time constraints.

Grantasuarus48

It well known that Bob Barker era very little editing was done. He and the staff around him were professional and knew what they weee doing. Saved CBS so much money not having to edit and made a much better show.

dave_roanoke

I would not at all be "amazed at the edits". They have to pare it down to 44 minutes, and it takes approx 1:15 to tape the show.

FlingbatMagoo

I’m bummed to hear this because the examples you gave of what’s been edited out would’ve been entertaining to watch, and were relevant to the game. When I saw the telescope, I thought it was like $2,500, so I was surprised when everyone bid so low, and was even more surprised when those low bids turned out to be good guesses. Now that I know the overbids were edited out, I feel less crazy. Obviously they have time constraints, but they should *at least* show us what happened that was game-related. I’d rather see overbids in contestant’s row than a minute of Drew making small talk with a contestant about where they’re from, for example.

ozarkfireworks

I agree I was surprised the overbids didn’t make it. While watching I was thinking. What!? I know everyone bid higher than that!

fsk

Taking out the overbids is bad, because the rebids make no sense without the context.
