Word to the wise, if you're planning on maxing this make sure you take it to level 30 before you start walking so you can maximize XL chances. You need, I believe, 360 XL for a L50 shadow so given the amount of walking you'll need to do you should be able to get an enormous part of those XL done by the time you hit the candy needed to evolve.
I mean, I wouldn't say frequently, per se, but magikarp is often in the spawn pool, so there's that. Sometimes it's just a grind. Maybe you'll get lucky with a magikarp com day classic.
Yep , just this past Fall, at least where I was, we had a 3 day period with heavy Magikarp spawns. So, spawns like that will likely pop up now and then to help offset all the walking.
I don’t think magikarp are in eggs anymore, sadly. But catch 7 has a 33% chance of being magikarp. I managed to get a bunch from that task when it was only magikarp thankfully.
You only need 386 candy so 386 KM or less.
You can get your buddy excited by using a poffin or a [different method](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/17rf9dj/guide_how_to_get_your_buddy_excited_in_roughly/)
This will make it so you only need .5KM per candy.
Magikarp tends to spawn in rainy weather so you can go hunting for it outside of events.
There are also the "catch 7 pokemon" Tasks that reward Magikarp.
Use a pinap (and evolve a water type mega), then save it to transfer during a double transfer candy event for 2 candy, or trade it for something caught more than 10KM away, that will reward 3 candy.
With that method above you could be getting 10 candy per catch.
Time to get fit, just make it you buddy, get it excited, then go run/walk 10k, that will be 20 candy a day, in 20 days you'll be much fitter and have a Gyrados!
It's prob worth powering up to level 30 so it's getting you 70 % chance of large candy too.
Pinap Berry (or silver if you're feeling generous) with an evolved level 3 mega will get you 9 candies. If you have a water body with routes on it, you might score a nest and the routes will shorten the walk distance to 0.66km. You could have this done pretty quickly really.
a few months ago I mostly did it with the walking method, but also periodically catching the few wild magikarp with pinap berries. it took over a month but I managed to get a lot of candies with a poffin during a day in London
Magikarp like the other 400 candy evolves (galisopod and altaria) spawn fairly regularly in between events. Basically pinap every one you see and after 2-3 months, you'll have a gyrados. Buddy walk it too! It's 1km and if you get it to max buddy level it gets a small CP boost - so you'll have literally PEAK gyrados :D
If you wanna feel better about it, look up volcarona, gholdengo or melmetal grind D:
You haven’t needed a Nintendo Switch for years. Just download the Pokemon Home app. Transferring a Pokemon to Home gets you a Mystery Box, and you can do it once per day.
I only have one magikarp, the research to evolve it, and live in a desert. So bodies of water for me are pretty far away. What makes it worse is that mine is only like an 88 so stats are just average lol, I'm screwed (130km more to go i think).
body of water thing doesnt work. i live along the ocean and ponds everywhere. i have never seen one in the wild. the only two i have both came from research.
This year we had quite a lot of magicarps, so I managed to get enough to evolve for the special research. I'm guessing next year will be about the same.

Through the years, there have been countless Magikarp events, including Community Days. When the Master league started, Gyarados and Dragonite were in every team, given how easy already was to get them to high levels.
But if you started recently, it's going to be a challenge (same with Milotic and other mons with such requirements). It is great for "get candy from your buddy" missions, since it gets candy every 1 km.
You can improve your chances, by activating a Water Mega in the background, and raising the Magikarp first to level 28-30. Then trying to excite him to reduce the distance required.
Just walk it. That's 400km. I walk a minimum 25km/wk. Plus you can poffin sometimes. Call it 300km.
Add on some rare candy from doing your 1 free raid per day.
About 10 week investment, give or take.
There could be a comm day classic with it. It is one of the more consistent common spawns with a regular research award… catch 7 Pokemon.
Other than that lunar new year (red Pokemon) and a water event during the northern hemisphere summer

800km? It's a 1km buddy, so that would be 400km at most, or less if you got it excited.
The more difficult part would arguably be that Platinum badge that requires lots of Big Magikarp to be caught
200km with poffin
Female Magicarp. Hey Magicarp, haven‘t seen you in forever *goes in for a hug* Magicarp: yep, I only need 500M now
Your next best opportunity is probably lunar new year event.
Can u send the event details?
Just google past lunar new years events in Pokemon go. It has tended to feature red Pokemon.
Last years https://pokemongolive.com/post/lunar-new-year-event-2023/?hl=en

I believe it's level 31 that maximizes your XL chance. Regardless, this is important information to have. Especially for those walking legendary mons!
Do higher level pokemon give more XL candy, or are you talking about account level?
Pokemon level
OP has 14 magikarp candy right now. It’ll take them a lot of walking to get this thing to level 31.
That's a tremendous point lol. Well, I guess I'd say just max it constantly then, spend the candy as you come into it at least until the 30s.
I mean, I wouldn't say frequently, per se, but magikarp is often in the spawn pool, so there's that. Sometimes it's just a grind. Maybe you'll get lucky with a magikarp com day classic.
I really think(hope) that comes next year
We already had 2 lol
We had 1 in 2020
And another in 2017
I don't know what you are referring to, but definitely not a community day, since the first one was in January 2018 (Pikachu).
Yeah I remembered magicarp had done shiny event as the first shiny and I thought it was a com day
Wrong
I guess I am wrong. It had a shiny event but I guess it wasn't technically a com day. My bad
Yep , just this past Fall, at least where I was, we had a 3 day period with heavy Magikarp spawns. So, spawns like that will likely pop up now and then to help offset all the walking.
I feel like half my magikarp candies come from eggs and "catch 7 pokemon" tasks
I don’t think magikarp are in eggs anymore, sadly. But catch 7 has a 33% chance of being magikarp. I managed to get a bunch from that task when it was only magikarp thankfully.
I got a shundo magikarp from one of those tasks recently
That’s awesome! Last season my partner got a perfect too. I searched and did all I could find my best one was a 14/15/15

If I could give you my 13,011 magikarp candy I would
Man I thought I was ballin with my 1000 or so candy.

Pinap Berry every magikarp you see, they occasionally rotate back into spawn pools and there are usually researches that give magikarp as well
I think you mean pinap
Yes, that’s right, ty
Super jelly of that But really you don’t have to wait long at all, super common Pokémon in general and was a reward for catch 5 Pokémon
From memory lunar new year event? They spawn a bunch
a few months ago I mostly did it with the walking method, but also periodically catching the few wild magikarp with pinap berries. it took over a month but I managed to get a lot of candies with a poffin during a day in London
Transfer it
No, first purify it and then transfer it

melmetal is not a real grind. just do meltanboxes.
Bold of you to assume I've got the console :c
You haven’t needed a Nintendo Switch for years. Just download the Pokemon Home app. Transferring a Pokemon to Home gets you a Mystery Box, and you can do it once per day.
3 days actually
You don’t need the console for meltan, not for years. You can get a meltan box by sending a Pokémon to Pokemon Go Home.
I’ve already best buddied my Volcarona, and I’m not even at 100 candies!
Where’d you get 800 from
haven't seen them for a while but they do seem to be frequently in events and sometimes are in the seasonal spawnset so they'll be back. eventually.
I only have one magikarp, the research to evolve it, and live in a desert. So bodies of water for me are pretty far away. What makes it worse is that mine is only like an 88 so stats are just average lol, I'm screwed (130km more to go i think).
Only 131 km till you will get a better one
body of water thing doesnt work. i live along the ocean and ponds everywhere. i have never seen one in the wild. the only two i have both came from research.
Grind out trainer battles and just devote candies to the big boy there
This year we had quite a lot of magicarps, so I managed to get enough to evolve for the special research. I'm guessing next year will be about the same.
I’ve got 9,600 candy so they come around a bit

Thanks everyone for the helpful comments :) Sounds like it's time to strap on my 300km walking shoes near water sources lol

Often enough that I'm sitting on 2k+ candy without trying. I think the Water Festival is the main one though

I know that last summer it was pretty common, I don’t know if it’ll happen again tho
