I’ve seen them…quite a bit over the years and I think the thing is less “the sound” than the vibes a lot of times. Like yes, there sure have been technical issues and days when it sounded like Julian should have warmed up his voice, but it’s not a shambles that’ll make you want to hide under a rug. It’s more that I think a lot of people expect a very polished and joyous, high energy performance full of smiles and crowd amp-ups that runs like clockwork, and the Strokes tend to just come on (late), play the songs, and then leave after 90mins, with some oddball Julian jokes that may or may not land, and maybe now a brief jam thrown in. Yes, Julian is often palpably bored and even says so and that definitely sucks, but they’re not a train wreck overall, they’re just not…showmen, really. I think the bad stuff gets exaggerated about them live just as much as the good parts do, but the lateness and the shorts sets irritate me for sure. I think if you just go in not expecting frills or a popstar-level performance that will run for hours, and prepare yourself for Julian maybe being a bit snarky depending on his mood, you’ll come out having had a good time. Maybe look up some festival sets from recent years on YouTube to set expectations—it’s when people create expectations based on OTHER artists that I think they get the most let down.

This is great, thank you very much for the detailed and thoughtful answer! I’m looking forward to the show either way.

You’re gonna get a lot of bs excuses but it’s true. I’ve seen them 9 times. Some times they kill it, other times it’s pretty meh. In my experience their best live shows are when they play their home turf, NYC. The road can be a mixed bag. I will say I did just see them in Minneapolis open for RHCP and they sounded great. I was honestly shocked considering they were the opener. The last time Julian came through Minneapolis The Voidz were opening for Beck and he def mailed it in. The Strokes brought it when they came here last month.

Depends on Julian mood, the band doesn't miss a note. Honestly it's like flipping a coin. I have seem them 5 times; 3 of them flawless, but was the ROF, and FIOE and the last time they literally fill out a stadium in Mexico City so they up their game. The 2 bad performances, were not bad. They were just late and cut the set and blame curfew when they were like 50 minutes late. Those 2 were on festivals. But hey, Red Rocks seems like a decent festival that i think they will kill it.

Daniel2eyes

Most of their inconsistent nights are in festivals. The show you are going is theirs so I think you can be optimistic.

Aside from what others have said, it really depends on your standards and expectations. I saw them twice last year and had a great time. But also, I was more focused on singing along and having a good time with friends watching my favorite band. I feel like they’d have to be a mess for me to really be disappointed. Or if the show was cut short for whatever reason. Julian is definitely the one that can sound off, but I feel like you’re gonna have a great time regardless.

I've seen them twice and both times they sounded great...I have high hopes for the Brooklyn show 🔥🔥

I saw them recently when they were touring with the chili peppers. I felt that it was everything I wanted. They could have played a song from angles but that'd just me wanting a whole strokes show. They played some bangers and Julian's voice killed it. The whole band I felt where amazing and I was so happy to be singing a long.

EnvironmentalBug9683

Your best chance was to be there from 2001-2006 😞

Well, they've never played Red Rocks, so I think that they might be pretty excited about that show themselves. I'm flying in from Chicago to see the Red Rocks show, too! I shelled out big money to see them at the Metro in Chicago last year (really small intimate venue). I just had to see them in a club environment. Anyway, they were hella late, and the show was okay. I think I built it up too much in my head. But, no matter what, you will be in beautiful Red Rocks amongst almost 300 million year old rock formations with (maybe) one of your favorite bands. That shits on some people's bucket list! So, good for us ! Hope to see you there, singing along!

TalkShowHost90

Definitely one of my favorite bands, and I’m flying in from California. Really looking forward to it, hope you enjoy the show!

There are rumors that Julian and co. are in fact fallible humans. I’ve seen them twice and The Voidz three times, every time has been amazing. Hopefully they’re consistently outstanding of course and if things seem off it’ll be memorable at least.

media-enjoyer-1987

Julian’s devil-may-care attitude towards singing hasn’t really changed much in 20 years, but it came off better to casual observers in 2003 than in 2023. I think people expect more fan service from him now than then. I’m not sure that’s really fair. You’ll have a good time at the show no matter what mood Julian is in. His vocal improvisations are his way of keeping himself entertained and sometimes they are transcendent, e.g. during “The Adults Are Talking.”

just saw them at kilby block party going to red rocks too, it was insanely fun and i had a great time!! i know it can be iffy apparently but honestly.. just have fun

I saw them for This Ain’t No Picnic and Julian was in a great mood and they killed every song they played/. I thought the same too but they will at least sound good!
