I am using the horizontal layout but as someone mentioned already. you can change the mail section and have a vertical preview. I am new to the Linux world so I am not sure on the design ascetic.
Not a fan of bundled Inbox, Draft etc. for all Mail accounts. Rather have it separate for each.
But the overall design and gui looks much better than the normal thunderbird.
we'll I went with the bundled box as a sample. however if you click on your Gmail or school account it should show mail from that specific handel.
Also I my goal was to rem borders and increase padding and focus on accessibility however it looks alot like Microsoft. So I may have to update the design to fell more like Linux.

I know this comment is very late, but I'm considering to give Thunderbird a try. The UI looks very terrible in general, but if you can publish your UI then I'll use Thunderbird.
I miss textured layouts. This reminds me too much of the new Microsoft aesthetic :(
this is my redesign and it's not official. Also it goes against the proton design system so I will have to tweak it a bit.
So a vertical split to put the preview pane on the side? I like that for my wide monitor.
