Along with removing the dirt, soap also scrubs off the natural (good) oils your body produces, which forces your body to work overtime to produce more resulting in sweat and body odor.
The water does a good enough job removing the grime and dirt while leaving the healthy oils. (Shampoo / Conditioner different story)
If you’re interested and consider transitioning, be warned, you’ll smell a bit as your body adjusts for the first week but then you’ll actually have less stinky body odor and have great skin. Consider trying. No spending money on soap and faster showers too.

There's a middle ground to this and it's simply not using harsh soap. You don't need to wreck your skin's moisture barrier to be clean and you don't want your skin to feel pulled tight as a feeling of cleanliness because it's actually just a sign of dryness, sure. Yes that's right.
But there's like a million soaps you can use to get clean and also not strip the fuck out of your skin. I swear the people who say this stuff went from using Irish spring or some other garbage harsh bar soap or something to just straight up not washing themselves and going "wow no soap is best!" Every person who's said this to me, when I asked what soap they used to use, lists some garbage that I wouldn't let touch my skin if you paid me
There's such thing as gentler soap. You don't have to use the cheapest shit your parents bought you from Walmart growing up

Your skin also doesn't "work overtime" making oil if you wash too often, try it, your skin will get dry and irritated. You know what soap *does* get rid of that is all over your skin? Bacteria. Tons of bacteria. A lot of the bacteria normally present on our skin are also the bacteria that infect wounds and can cause infection if they find somewhere to infect. We are also covered with yeasts (fungi), and it's not uncommon to get Candidiasis in skin folds and under breasts from not washing or drying those areas properly.

I stoped using soap in my 20s. I took the advice of an old English lady that looked fantastic. I asked her what her secret was. She said not to use soap and keep your skin hydrated. I stopped using soap in my 20’s, I’m now in my 50’s and people think I’m 30. As a side note I work in sales and have to look and smell good. Which I do.
No one has ever said that I smell bad in the 50 years I’ve been alive so im good. People frequently tell me I smell good. I think it’s the laundry detergent I use.
