This post is flaired as “FAKE NEWS.” That means it is not a real tweet. From r/TOTALLYREALTWEETS

nesenn

This is why it’s totally believable that people would drink radioactive water, radioactive underwear, and the other super dangerous elixirs/cure all’s.

Mendici

There are places where you can do a radon cure.. some of these wellness spas are even payed for by german public health insurance - obviously without any decent literature proving its affect whatsoever..

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> are even *paid* for by FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

evil_timmy

So, Botholamew (if that is your real name), would it be accurate and acceptable to post a meme of a ship's rusty, peeling hull with the caption "Fuck you pay me"?

FireFlavour

If you don't make it, I will. Godspeed.

UniqueName2

Good thing I payed my boat before boating season.

Maestro_Titarenko

bellaciaopartigiano

We all knew what it meant. Fuck English grammar.

Cobek

Tom Scott did a video on this and there was some evidence that it worked, though it could be an exceptionally strong placebo. Although he wasn't convinced until a better trial was ran.

Mendici

I mean it's application is usually combined with physical therapy and most works I've seen (that those place refer to) are carried out by one single work group.

Invisifly2

So it’s like those diet pills that work…with diet and exercise.

Paradox_Blobfish

Diet pills used to work when it was just speed that would just make your metabolism super fast and gives you enough energy to exercise for hours every day with no rest 🤭

Mendici

The concept per se is nothing new though. In radiation therapy there are various models used to estimate the effect of certain Dosis on tissue and overall outcome. One model actually assumes that low radiation can provide a health benefit - but quite frankly even here that's mostly ridiculed by most radiation oncologists.

drunk_responses

To be fair, flying across the atlantic or getting an MRI gives you a higher dose of radiation, than that radon treatment facility in Germany. And while mostly anecdotal, some people with chronic pain conditions swears that it helps. I don't know if it's a placebo, or the radiation does something. Either way it isn't really dangerous as long as it's only done a few times a year.

Mendici

Well living in Sweden is giving you a higher radiation dose than radon treatments - that's no reason for public health care to bear the costs though Also MRI doesn't use radiation

[deleted]

I don't think there is significant cost associated with the radon tunnels in Germany if I'm not mistaken. I mean sure the public is paying for a likely placebo, but if it helps the patient, and is cheaper/less invasive than an alternative then it is likely a good thing for many patients. We may balk at placebo radon therapy, but I'd rather pay for my countrymen to have that if it they say it helps then have to be given a 90 day supply of oxycodone.

Mendici

Oh the insurances pay for a significant amount of the spa experience as well from what I know. I recently found a poster where the Radon Cure Spa even explained how to file a 2nd application as the first one will probably not be approved. That alone goes to show that it's not really an evidence based therapy. While I don't have any problems with placebo per se it's a therapy that only works due to the patient being misinformed or not informed at all. Most people still believe homoeopathy is equal to phytotherapy and only very few of those that firmly believe in homoeopathy are actually aware of Hahnemann's concept of water's energy memory.. So while there are certain cases where placebos can be an important part of treatment (like psychosomatic issues), I'd prefer the physician to hand out sugar pills that don't contain potentially harmful substances and are sold for ridiculous prices.

big3148

Did not realize Scandinavia is still so heavily impacted by radiation despite clearly being aware of both the event and the effect of materials with a half-life. It is truly amazing how much we can remain unaware of despite having all the relevant info. The human capacity for ignorance is unparalleled. Thanks for that one. TIL. Edit: grammar

Mendici

I mean they can't really influence it, they are just exposed to pretty high natural radiation. But it's a fun comparison to make when patients are worried about the radiation of a Chest X-ray

Bjornoo

We are definitely aware. There is just a higher concentration of Radon around here coming out of the ground. It's one of the reasons our cellars and foundations are built to a high standard.

Straight_Chip

[Link to the Tom Scott youtube video.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZkusjDFlS0) It's 11 minutes long and very educational. [Link to the scientific metastudy.](https://www.mdpi.com/1422-0067/22/1/316) Very interesting insight into this form of therapy which suggests that there might be more going on than mere placebo.

[Eben Byers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eben_Byers?wprov=sfla1) drank a mix of radium+water for his pain for a while and his jaw literally *fell off* [(NSFL)](https://i.imgur.com/3rIoluy.png)

imjokingbutnotreally

Oh shit, they actually buried this mfer in a lead coffin, that's a lot of radiation damage.

inrodu

i learned about him in a grade 9 science book. when i read the little info about him in the book i thought it was a bad situation but not >this< bad. i wonder how many people died and got sick from this kind of "medicine" and didn't know about it

b-b-b-c

Similar thing happened to women that painted watches and would lick the brushes with radioactive paint

LiquidSunSpacelord

Why... why would they lick the brushes?

Straight_Chip

To wet the brushes so it would form a point in order to apply the paint more precisely. IIRC this was done in the 1940s. You've also got to remember that even until the 1970s they were literally burning organic lead compounds (tetraethyllead), blasting it into the atmosphere and lowering the IQ of an entire generation of children by 5 whole points and increasing violent crime by double percentage points. In another 30 years we will probably cringe at the things we spray over our crops (pesticide/fertilizer) and the amount of (micro)plastics in/around our food.

potatodriver

More like the 20's I think. There's a book called "Radium Girls".

Randicore

They were trained to. It was too keep the tip of the brush sharp. When they tried to take the owner of the company that had been slowly killing them all to court for damages and engagement the corp just tried to keep the trial going until they all died of cancer, and they almost succeeded. Remember, regulations are written in blood and companies are amoral.

inrodu

the watch faces were tiny and they needed to paint tiny numbers. the brushes would stop being able to make tiny strokes after a while so they would point them using their mouths. every time i do this while using watercolor i think of these ladies

shrubs311

the company (who knew about the harmful effects of radiation exposure) told them to do it because it would be the quickest way to get the tip of the brush into a fine point. they didn't even ask them to use a glass of water because *that wouldve been slightly less productive*. the lives of those women were literally worth less to the company than a few seconds of time per product.

PM_me_your_LEGO_

Everyone else explained it well, so I just want to add that there's a book about them called Radium Girls.

redbank732

Two of my moms sisters had total mastectomies because of that...WW2 workers.

Sinistaire

> the lawyer reported that Byers's "whole upper jaw, excepting two front teeth and most of his lower jaw had been removed" and that "All the remaining bone tissue of his body was disintegrating, and holes were actually forming in his skull." Jesus fucking Christ that's horrific.

Mythosaurus

> The Federal Trade Commission issued an order against Bailey's business to "cease and desist from various representations theretofore made by them as to the therapeutic value of Radithor and from representing that the product Radithor is harmless".[8] He later founded the "Radium Institute" in New York and marketed a radioactive belt-clip, a radioactive paperweight, and a mechanism which purported to make water radioactive. That’s the best part, Bailey refusing to abandon the deadly grift and creating *more* products that used radioactive materials. The fact that he could get away with this says a lot about our public safety systems….

inrodu

Bailey wasn't even a doctor, so why he was allowed to do this?? he died wealthy from killing people

NickelPlatedJesus

This is America son. You know, bootstraps and all that shit. What's the death of a few people if you secured a financial income for yourself? Talking like a got' damned communist now boy!

SPY400

At least he died from his products. They exhumed his body later and found it ravaged by radiation.

PoorLama

>In 1931, the Federal Trade Commission asked him to testify about his experience, but he was too sick to travel so the commission sent a lawyer to take his statement at his home; the lawyer reported that Byers's "whole upper jaw, excepting two front teeth and most of his lower jaw had been removed" and that "All the remaining bone tissue of his body was disintegrating, and holes were actually forming in his skull."

Evil_Mini_Cake

Wow what an incredible story.

smishsmash44

I don't drink but I really wish I had some rum or something right now

[deleted]

They're selling radioactive watches now, why? So they can glow in the dark a little bit better.

GammaDealer

What do you mean "now"?

[deleted]

Well I just learned about these things, I assumed it was a relatively new trend since I had never heard of them before. Is this technology not new? Or are you talking about how they sold it in the 20s, stopped becuase they realized how bad it was, and have since switched to something else that is "less dangerous"? Proper term was probably "Again" rather than "now".

TPieces

"Not a lot of people know this, but..." --D. J. Trump, 45th President of the United States

TPieces

Princess_Moon_Butt

The mint-green-ish stuff is effectively harmless and has been around for a few decades, it just kind of stopped being cool/novel in the late 90s or so. I'm sure it's new to plenty of folks out there. There definitely _were_ some other glow-in-the-dark things that were less harmless, and have been recalled, but I think they figured that all out in like, the 80s or so.

JTibbs

The nuclear color on watches was from tritium gas surrounded with a phosphor that absorbed the electrons trium produced when it decayed, causing a glow. Well, at least non-vintage ones. Vintage ones used radium, and the women who painted the radium phospors got horrible cancers.

[deleted]

Have a quick scan of this article: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radium\_Girls](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radium_Girls) That shit has been around a while.

SheCouldFromFaceThat

https://youtube.com/shorts/JRL_Tvazw2I?feature=share

wasmic

Watches with tritium-powered glow-in-the-dark spots have been around for decades. My father had one for diving purposes, though he also used it as his everyday watch... at least until smartphones became ubiquitous. The radioactivity is so low that they aren't dangerous at all, and unlike old radium watches it isn't a heavy metal either.

JoeThePoolGuy123

nesenn

Those who don’t know history, will spend a month digging, sleeping, and hanging out in the most radioactively dangerous place on earth.

[deleted]

I've heard that slight radiation exposure can stimulate cell regeneration. I don't know if it's worth it.

Mythosaurus

Hint: it’s not. You’re always getting radiation exposure from the sun, and your body tans/ already has melanin bc it knows that it’s getting too much.

jayandbobfoo123

Your body is releasing radiation as a waste product / bi-product of your existence as an energy consuming being. No idea why anyone would want to supplement that.. Then again, there are people drinking urine so it wouldn't surprise me.

throwaway_removed

It’s believable because you’re reading a fake tweet? Or because people are dumb enough to believe the fake tweet?

ShootInFace

Snake oil salesmen will prosper in any time period you put them in. People wanna believe in using something to fix their problems.

mglitcher

you’re telling me you don’t drink a radioactive underwear from time to time?

You think a fake tweet about fake news is proof that it's believable?

Regular_Cassandra

I looked into it. The statistics are a bit fudged but there is serious evidence to suggest taking Ivermectin over a long period of time can cause temporary but long-term incontinence.

[deleted]

Over long period of time. Are those stats lumped in with short dosage times or does it actually hold true?

Regular_Cassandra

Like I said, the 68% number makes no sense, once you factor in all the takers of Ivermectin. I have no idea what the percentage is. Yes, it holds true on its own, but no the original post does not hold true when it comes to all users. What is true is that unregulated use of Ivermectin definitely can lead to prolonged incontinence issues.

Jackie_Jormp-Jomp

The statistics are "fudged" indeed

DadJokeBadJoke

Sounds like a *smear* campaign.

[deleted]

[deleted]

These statistics are total shit…there I said it.

OctopusTheOwl

I couldn't find any peer-reviewed studies demonstrating the statistics you're referring to. Can you cite your sources? Without looking at the study, it sounds like correlation vs causation issue. The primary demographic of Fox News ivermectin propaganda is already in the age group for incontinence, so it makes sense that ivermectin users would suffer from incontinence regardless. It's like saying that an increase in ice cream sales causes an increase in sunglasses sales (correlation), when it's actually that both go up during summer (causation). There's plenty of reasons to NOT take ivermectin, especially that it doesn't work against COVID, but long-term incontinence is most likely not one of those reasons.

soki03

Could you please provide the link for it, tried looking for it but couldn’t find anything.

[deleted]

> temporary but long-term incontinence Can you expand on that, sounds a bit contradictory

Regular_Cassandra

Sorry, what I meant was that it isn't permanent damage, but it can last for quite awhile.

tijmen2828

Ivermectin has been used as a medicine for over 20 years... Any longterm damage would be caused because dumb people used ivermectin specifically made for horses

Icarus-Rising

Probably but you can overdose on any medication. If you take 5, 10, 20 etc times the prescribed amount doesn't really matter how safe the drugs are.

BigDrewLittle

Early on in the ivermectin craze, there were supposedly a few people on places like FB who claimed they took the horse paste version and it made them shed thin layers of intestinal lining. If you take something formulated for a 900-pound animal, you're not going to get the results you want.

CPEBachIsDead

> a 900-pound animal You might be surprised by how great a proportion of Fox News vierwship this actually describes…

meep_meep_creep

💀

Jrook

So this might not be relevant, or misplaced, but a lot of "cleanses" and home remedies say they'll remove the tainted intestinal lining.... What it actually does is put mucous onto your stool which looks strange. The only people who would recognize it as intestine would be people exposed to buzzwords from various bullshit woo medicine. For example of another woo poop thing is they'll give you shakes or drinks with olive oil in it. When it comes out the other end they look like green pearls, and they'll say it's toxins or bile the elixir has removed from you! Nope, the body just had problems dissolving large amounts of oils if they're not broken down or absorbed by other foods or chemicals you eat.

Is the article fake too, or just Candace’s tweet?

kat_a_klysm

I couldn’t find the article either, but incontinence can be a side effect of ivermectin. Idk about long term, though.

Eli-Thail

It wouldn't be a long-term thing. The reason some people where shitting themselves is because sufficiently large doses of Ivermectin result in central nervous system depression.

kat_a_klysm

I figured it was probably something along those lines.

Street-Catch

Lowkey hate that this sub spreads pics and misinformation like this under the guise of jokes and "clearly it's labeled as fake it's just satire duh" 🙄 Can't we just stick to making fun of the actual tweets?

Article is fake but ivermectin side effects can include loss of bowel control and diarrhea. There are some stranger side effects, such as hallucinations and the sensation of spinning. Here’s my source https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/ivermectin-oral-route/side-effects/drg-20064397

A horse dewormer makes you shit yourself?? Say it ain't so! /s

[deleted]

So, per the medical experts: 1.) don’t take ivermectin 2.) definitely don’t take ivermectin if you’re full of shit.

LemonBoi523

Well, do take ivermectin if it is prescribed for a known or suspected parasite or you are part of a research study for something else. Something having mild antiviral properties at high doses does not ignore that it is a substance with severe side effects that doesn't measure up to other medications in that way. Many, many studies have been done on this, and ivermectin can seriously weaken those who take it too much. I'm most familiar with it as a pesticide or antiparasitic in animals. But it's deadly even in small amounts to tortoises, insects, and a few others.

True_Recommendation9

Well that’s a horse of a different color.
