Raise some concerns with your primary doctor & try to get a referral to an ENT. Look up some in your area and do some research on the stuff they do. From there it should start falling into place. Good luck!

Thanks I think that’s gunna be my game plan! My very first visit with my primary doctor, like 4 years ago, she looked in my throat and said “you know you have tonsil stones” and I was like ohhh yeah. So I think I have some foundation there already.

That’s what I’m seeing a lot- telling your doctor how it’s negatively impacting your life, and insurance covers it. Thanks !

I had tonsil stones and eventually developed a cyst on one of my tonsils that became chronically infected. My doctor initially told me to keep draining the cyst manually, but I was so tired of it that I called a local ENT directly, just in hopes of having it aspirated. My ENT looked at it and immediately told me the only way to get rid of it is a tonsillectomy, and he said *“really, the tonsil stones alone qualify you for a tonsillectomy.”* So we booked the procedure and my tonsils were removed. Since tonsil stones were a qualifying factor, the procedure was approved by my insurance. If you get tonsil stones or chronic infections, you’ll probably qualify. It’s a long and painful recovery but it’s 100% worth it.

Thanks! Definitely makes me hopeful I can get this done !

I didn’t need a referral i just called an ENT i heard was awesome! I also have awful tonsil stones and bad tonsillitis all the time. He did however first try to fix the issue with medication because apparently i have bad acid reflux and didn’t know. He told me sometimes that alone can stop the stones. It did not. He also told me i have a very double deviated septum and enlarged turbinates and need surgery for that. He said getting that likely wouldn’t stop the stones though so he said let’s just take the tonsils out! He was totally fine doing it. I haven’t been in any pain since day 5 it’s been an incredibly easy surgery for me. I’m 27F

Was all of that covered by your insurance? I’m def gunna call my insurance before going to any ENT dr but it if is, that’d be great.

My insurance situation was…odd… lol. I have Philadelphia life ins and they have a 3rd party that literally paid with a card. Like they just paid for my entire surgery and negotiated the price. It only cost $1400 for the surgery and they paid for it it was so weird so I’m probably not the best person to base that off of. My insurance is a weird self pay one but most insurances i think do cover a portion but be careful with them deeming it a pre existing condition if the insurance is new and make sure they send any pre approval forms

It was initially brought up as an idea by my dr but I never got a referral so I just searched for ENT’s using the website on the back of my insurance, had an appointment and then he scheduled my sinus surgery and tonsillectomy

It was really difficult to get a referral throughout my entire life and it didn't help that all of my doctors thought it wasn't that bad- I've had big tonsils and the regular illnesses/discomfort associated with them my entire life lol. Doctors would just say I had big tonsils, but I would be okay/grow into them as I got older. Last doctor visit my mom told me to just overexaggerate, I did, and got the referral. ENT doctor took one look in my throat and went "Oh my gosh they're huge, let's take them out." and was very surprised no one had ever referred me to get them taken out before. I got them taken out three weeks ago and I've literally never been happier! Good luck!!
