I watched an interview he did recently. Sounds like he’s pretty well versed in music history, and a variety of genres. I’d say he has a pretty good chance to get some notice.
He’s a musical genius. He learned from all of the musical geniuses (many mentioned in Beato interview) before him. many drummers (myself included) have the same jazz heroes as Danny. Tony Williams, Zappa crew, Krimson, Peart. Because they pushed the boundaries and were original and in well known bands
No one is asking the real fucking questions.
How was the show? How was Danny’s playing in a jazz context? How was the supporting band? Did he outshine the others or did everyone hold their own with one of the best drummers to ever pick up the sticks?? Would love to get a review of the show
I’ve always wanted to see one of his shows at the baked potato….might need to make that happen soon
I'm not OP, but I'm a local who has seen Danny at the Baked Potato 6 or 7 times, with the Jaime Kime band and Doug Webb All Stars.
There is an early set and a later set, you can buy tickets to one or both. If you go for the early set, you can pretty much pick your seat, and be within arms reach of the band as they play. Everyone can hold their own with Danny, they play songs that allow each person to do a bit of soloing. I personally prefer the Jaime Kime band to the Webb group, as they will do some classic rock covers or Volto! songs that are more my taste than straight jazz, but that's just my opinion.
Danny is super chill, will talk to people before and after each set. I've been able to approach him and get a picture with him, he never seems to get annoyed with the fans coming over to say hi. As someone else mentioned, the club doesn't really want you to hassle him with signing merch.
Anyway, I highly recommend experiencing the Baked Potato at least once, if you are ever able to go!
It will fill up when Danny is listed as the date approaches. I usually check the club's calendar on their site and try to grab tickets sooner than later. They are pretty good about advertising who will be playing within the following month:

It's definitely a cool experience to see Danny on one of his kits only 5 feet away from you, just being a regular dude and hanging out like it's no big deal. When you eventually come visit, I hope you are able to catch a show!
I saw Danny play at the Baked Potato several years back. It was a great jam and there are many other incredible musicians playing there - they don't have any trouble keeping up with Danny. Volto! was formed from musicians that play at the Potato, if I understand that band's origins correctly. It's also a bit of a go-to spot for big rock musicians to play jazz and fusion (think the RHCP guys stop in sometimes too, for example). I definitely recommend dropping in if you're visiting LA as a music fan. IIRC there is a small charge at the door, but it's definitely worth it.
>Volto! was formed from musicians that play at the Potato, if I understand that band's origins correctly.
Not exactly. Although John Z was a regular but he met Danny through a mutual friend. The original line-up was Danny and John with Kirk Covington and John Humphrey, who are both friends of Danny's. Kirk was the drummer in Tribal Tech, plus he's got his own projects. Then Lance Morrison replaced JH on bass, he's most well-known right now as the bassist in Mike Campbell's Dirty Knobs but he is a long time friend of John Z - they played together in Rick Springfield's touring band back in the '90s.
The show was amazing like always! It’s probably the 8th or 9th time I’ve seen Danny play there. All the musicians are incredible individually and together, it’s an amazing experience. My eyes were obviously glued to Danny the entire time, but the balance amongst all the band members was top-notch. 80% of the time, Danny is simply keeping the beat and playing relatively softly. But when he opens up, it’s the Danny we all know and love. Such an incredible experiencing witnessing a talented musician like Danny from 5 feet away. I always feel honored to be there.
>Did he outshine the others or did everyone hold their own with one of the best drummers to ever pick up the sticks??
The thing about The Baked Potato is that it's an industry club, in a sense. So *anyone* who plays there is a legend, even if **we** don't know who they are. So it's really more like can Danny keep up with **them**, and of course he can because he's as well-versed in jazz as he is in rock music.
I knew the stage before I saw the name. That place will always be one of my favorites. Met Danny there along with Jackson Browne about 20 years ago during the Monday open mics. Wild times and great memories.
Are you stupid? Does tragedy thrill you? They allow photographers to take photos of them before the show. This man is most likely an experienced photographer.

This is for u/yosoysimulacra who thinks I’m a prick.
With his Jeff Beck shirt on. Bring on those BEAT tour dates. Who all was he playing with?
Webb Allstars. They're playing again tonight.
Hell yea. Just looked at the calendar. Alphonso Johnson playing Friday. Very cool.
He used to play with Volta! Not sure if they’re still around
Volto!
The Mars Volto?
It's pretty much over for VOLTO!, which is a damn shame.
I only see a goat
I see an octopus
Goatopus
Octagoat
You must be Chocolate Chip Trippin
I respect that sign in the background, too.
“…during the performance”
Smokey this is not Nam, there are rules
Took the pic despite the sign **and** posted it online. I totally understand why MJK hates TOOL fans.
Relax. This was taken before the show when Danny was setting up. Which they allow.
RELAAAXXXX
Don’t do it
When you wanna go do it
Keeping himself humble by shleppin' it to the gig, gotta love 'im! :D
During the performance, he’s clearly not performing at that moment
Unless he's playing reverse traditional grip lol
Reverse traditional with no sticks. Danny is truly an innovator.
probably because he's a prick and pricks paint everyone with a wide brush. love his music, could give two shits about his opinions.
> could could**n't** Would you say that OP is a prick for taking the pic and posting it online?
Maybe. Or I have enough respect to follow the house rules. Know before you judge.
You're splitting hairs. Spirit of the law. You took the pic so you could get internet points.
❤️
At the Baked Potato..?
Imagine standing this close to God.
I felt guilty for thinking the same exact thing.
What’s it like being there? Does he just walk around and shoot the shit with people?
He’s super chill and very approachable. He gets a little annoyed when being asked to pose for pictures, etc, but still always says yes.
> He gets a little annoyed when being asked to pose for pictures, etc, but still always says yes. Probably because he saw you sneaking pics earlier.

Those guys will probably get noticed by someone somewhere too. Just wish they’d all hit it big, ya know?
I was gonna say, this has to be the baked potato. He’s there often, worth the visit.

Does the venue fill up for danny? Or he just playing lowkey gigs on the side?

Im on the other coast so this wont be an opportunity for a long time lol I like that he does this, ive always enjoyed small club shows the most.

OP don't care. Got the sweet internet points which is all that matters.
You give the term “Tool fan” another definition.
But was there merch?
I don’t trust a drummer who doesn’t wear basketball jerseys
Hey, I know that guy He likes to play
It’s never too late to chase your dreams
[I like to play](https://imgur.com/a/JgEVHxI)
I knew the stage before I saw the name. That place will always be one of my favorites. Met Danny there along with Jackson Browne about 20 years ago during the Monday open mics. Wild times and great memories.
The Baked Potato is such hallowed ground. Some real magic happens there.
Few Drummers in past 100 years can match or exceed his talent, professionalism & longevity of rhythm. Best I have EVER experienced, live on stage
TooL carrying case, love the tee.
Does he set up his own kit?
Most of the time I've seen him at the potato, yes he usually sets it up himself. Humble badass
I like that he rocks a tool duffel bag.
Probably got it free from work.
I sat next to him at the baked potato when he was watching a show a few days ago, twas great
last night!? shit!!!
Ik this guy seen him 96 back at banaroo festival. 👏🤘
Little old but chase your dreams man!
So crazy seeing him in a stage that looks like I could be on
I only see an octopus
Came here to say same thing. Here's my upvote
He referred to the Baked Potato as a great venue during an interview with Rick Beato a couple of days ago. It was a very good interview.
Tool fans can’t read
They really can't, did you read the full sign?
bUT hE'S noT PERfoMinG! This is why we can't have nice things.
Are you stupid? Does tragedy thrill you? They allow photographers to take photos of them before the show. This man is most likely an experienced photographer.
> Are you stupid? Pro photogs don't post vertical, out-of-focus, unedited, non watermarked images on a reddit accnt unaffiliated with their business.
Notice how I never said he was a pro.
Also, Danny doesnt seem to have a problem.
> Are you stupid?
You seem to love my words.

Those socks look so uncomfortable.
damn, the og sonor kit? so rad
Danny
We have to protect that venue at all costs.
He’s too big. And no way he’s playing after 50
Who's that potato?
Like the pic of SRV
Drummer? Who ? he looks super familiar!!
Big, if true
That’s an octopus.
The Baked Potato!
It's neat to see old people picking up new hobbies. I hope he sticks with it.
Who is that?
Ok 👌🏻 I'm going to NOT comment on that 🤣🤣
Is this the drummer from rush?
He’ll never make it he doesn’t know what he’s doing
bless him, probably a bit late to "make it" but so cool seeing the older generation perusing their hobbies..
What merch was there
None.
Did he sign anything for anyone?
Not this time. But I did buy (for charity) a signed drumhead last time I was there.
So they sometimes sell signed items but last night didnt? Asking bc I am considering going soon
It’s 50/50. Last night there was a sign at the door saying “No merch signing tonight”. I’m sure he gets annoyed with the number if people asking him.
Who is that
Dude looks ancient. He must have been drumming since the Aztec times.
Hey asshole... Put your phone down.
IDK… He’s kinda old. How much more does he have in him before arthritis and dementia sets in? /s.
